Square Enix shared an update on Kingdom Hearts 4 on social media following the Missing-Linkmobile game cancellation, and it involved a screenshot showing a playable Mickey Mouse. It also confirmed that the game is still in active development.

The update included six Kingdom Hearts 4 screenshots and images, the playable Mickey Mouse one included. Two seem to show active gameplay. One of those shows Sora fighting Heartless in Quadratum. He’s in the midst of an attack with the Keyblade, and the other options in the Commands menu are Magic, Items, and Build. The other gameplay screenshot shows King Mickey. He’s standing on top of a chandelier in a library, and the Command menu with an Attack command is shown in the lower left corner. The setting for that image isn’t exactly clear. It could be a place like Hollow Bastion, as we did explore a library there with The Beast as Sora in the original game and the architecture looks similar. The other screenshots show what appear to be CG moments from the game, with Sora featured in two, a boss in another, and Strelitzia in the last one.

Here are how all the new screenshots from Kingdom Hearts 4 look. They were released as one big image, rather than individual ones.

As for the update, here’s the full statement that appeared on places like Bluesky and X

“To our Kingdom Hearts community,

We’re currently working hard on Kingdom Hearts IV and will continue pouring ourselves into the game’s development. We’re dedicated to making this an experience that lives up to your expectations!

We’ve seen how excited you are, and we are truly grateful from the bottom of our hearts. We are equally excited and can’t wait to share more about Kingdom Hearts IV when the time is right. Until then, we appreciate your patience.

Thank you for your continued .”

Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link canceled

Square Enix announced that it has officially canceled Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link. The company added that it will focus on developing Kingdom Hearts 4 to ensure that the Kingdom Hearts series still continues on.

The company originally revealed Missing-Link along with Kingdom Hearts 4 during the series' 20th anniversary event in April 2022. The mobile app was to be made with a robust avatar character customization and a movement system that would both GPS-based tracking and manual pad controls.

Several people were able to get early hands-on experience with Missing-Link via closed beta tests, which Square Enix held in late 2023 and May 2024. However, in November 2024, the company announced a delay for the full launch of the mobile game without providing a new release window. The game's official social media had no further posts between the above delay announcement and today's confirmation of the game's cancellation.

The official announcement tweet, which confirms that Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link has been canceled, is also available to view right below:

Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link was originally slated to be available for iOS and Android mobile devices. This mobile game will now never see the light of day, as Square Enix is shifting its focus to develop the next mainline console entry, Kingdom Hearts 4.

Kingdom Hearts 4 Will Move the Series Towards Its Ending

Kingdom Hearts 4 is in such a interesting place for the beloved Disney and Square Enix collaboration series. With Kingdom Hearts 3 concluding many of the major storylines brewing since the first title’s release on PlayStation 2 in 2002, the door is now open for so many possibilities. If there is one element that has to happen, though, it is the return of Final Fantasy to Kingdom Hearts 4.

One of the most impressive parts about the original Kingdom Hearts was its brilliant mix of Final Fantasy and Disney characters. You had characters like Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII in the same game as Aladdin and Hercules. It was such a fascinating and bizarre mix that it is honestly surprising how well it worked for all companies involved.

Ever since the original game, Final Fantasy has been a crucial part of Sora, Riku, and Kairi’s journey. These characters often play significant roles in the plot or even participate in some of the most challenging side content (see Cloud and Sephiroth).

In fact, we even saw expansions of Square Enix characters in later games. There were the likes of The World Ends With You characters in Dream Drop Distance, for instance. There is no denying the importance of Square Enix’s JRPG properties when it comes to Kingdom Hearts, especially since this is Tetsuya Nomura’s baby and he is one of the visionaries behind FFVII and other titles in the first place.

Unfortunately, there is a bit of a problem with Final Fantasy in Kingdom Hearts. The third entry in the series came out in 2019 and essentially did away completely with Final Fantasy. You didn’t see major characters from that other Square Enix appear here and the references were almost nonexistent outside of Moogles and the names of spells.

This was a major departure from past titles, focusing solely on Sora’s story and the Disney worlds. You could argue this was because of the conclusive nature of this particular title. In some ways, you could say the game didn’t have enough time for Square Enix crossovers. To that, I say I understand but it feels a bit like an excuse. It is honestly a shame Square Enix made this awkward decision.

Fortunately, the series is not over yet. Kingdom Hearts 4 presents the opportunity for Final Fantasy to return and cross over in the franchise again. This actually seems quite likely given Sora’s sudden appearance in a new world. He is without his usual companions, so he will need some backup. I could see this happen in a number of ways, including bringing in some classic characters.

It would be fascinating to see Sora make quick allies with someone like Clive from Final Fantasy XVI. The two could team up together and bond over their shared experience of waking in a strange new land. This could even allow the series to mix in a villain from another Square Enix title, such as the wonderful Emet-Selch from FFXIV or Ardyn from Final Fantasy XV. This would create some fascinating interactions we haven’t seen yet.

But the Final Fantasy cameos shouldn’t stop there in Kingdom Hearts 4. It should go beyond the main storyline and offer some deep side content as well, similar to the Colosseum. Perhaps there could be a Gold Saucer-like world for players to hang out in, play minigames, and battle in an arena. This would fit well with the current Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy.

Regardless of how it happens, Final Fantasy needs to return to Kingdom Hearts 4. While I enjoyed Kingdom Hearts 3, it always felt like it was missing its roots and this glaring omission stands out. Square Enix and Tetsuya Nomura have the chance to fix this problem by bringing Final Fantasy and Sora back together.

Kingdom Hearts 4 will release sometime in the future for undisclosed platforms.

Kingdom Hearts 4 Will Move the Series Towards Its Ending

Square Enix first formed as the merger between the Japanese game development giants of Squaresoft and Enix in 2003. Since then, Square Enix has had some notably excellent titles pretty much every single year. However, 2025 looks to be one of the lightest years in the company’s history. As such, Square Enix needs Kingdom Hearts 4 and a Final Fantasy XIII remaster in 2025.

Let’s take a look at Square Enix’s set of releases in 2025. As of writing now at the time of writing after The Game Awards 2024 announcements, there are only two releases players can look forward to from this company in 2025. Those two announcements are just Final Fantasy VII Rebirth for PC and Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake.

The former is simply a port of an existing game, while the latter is likely to be a wonderful remake. However, those are the only releases. As of right now, this appears to be the lightest year in Square Enix’s history since 2003 if nothing else is announced. Of course, I do expect more announcements down the line.

Image via Square Enix

To this point, I think there are a couple of key realistic releases that would make 2025 better for the company than it could be. For instance, I don’t necessarily see Dragon Quest XII coming out next year, especially with the silence surrounding it. But what I could see happen, though it seems unlikely, is the release of Kingdom Hearts 4.

It was first announced back in April 2022, with initial development spanning back to at least 2020 at the latest. For reference, Kingdom Hearts 3 was announced in 2013 and came out six years later. That timeline sounds pretty dismal for hopes of this next entry in 2025, but I do think Square Enix is getting better about announcement timings.

Take a look at Final Fantasy VII Remake, which was announced in 2015, five years before its release. Its sequel, however, had its announcement in 2022 and came out less than two years later. There is a slim chance for Kingdom Hearts 4 in 2025, and it would be enough to save the year for Square Enix.

However, I acknowledge that possibility is unlikely at this point. Instead, there are a couple of other options worth mentioning that could save Square Enix in 2025. For instance, a full remaster of the entire Final Fantasy XIII trilogy. This trilogy are pretty much the only mainline singleplayer Final Fantasy games not available on modern platforms in some fashion. Well, other than backwards compatibility on Xbox, but that barely counts.

With the release of the inevitable Nintendo Switch 2 in 2025, a FFXIII trilogy remaster sounds like a great early launch title as well. These games have their fair share of problems, but they deserve another look. I still think the visuals look almost comparable to games today, while the story is fantastic. I also don’t love the linear nature of the original, but the second title helped with that.

Not to mention, this is a highly realistic option as well. Beyond FFXIII, there are a few final options worth mentioning. A new NieR game feels inevitable and 2025 would be the best year to put it out for Square Enix. I already delved into why I think this is imminent, but it would be a monumental release nonetheless.

There are also some smaller titles I’d like to see in 2025. We could see the next Bravely Default, which I expect on the Switch 2. There is also potential for a new HD-2D remake of another Square classic like Chrono Trigger or Xenogears. I could even see a Triangle Strategy 2 or successor.

Regardless, Square Enix currently has a near blank slate in 2025. I don’t expect this to stay this way for too much longer. Otherwise, 2025 could be one of the worst years in the company’s history, in of overall releases, if not the overall weakest. Square Enix needs major titles in 2025 like Kingdom Hearts 4 or a FFXIII remaster to keep fans engaged.

Kingdom Hearts 4 is scheduled to release in the relatively near future for an unconfirmed set of platforms.

Kingdom Hearts 4 Will Move the Series Towards Its Ending

Kingdom Hearts series creator Tetsuya Nomura recently talked to Young Jump about his work on the Kingdom Hearts series. As part of the interview, Nomura said that Kingdom Hearts 4 is being made with the intention of eventually ending the series. [Thanks, Young Jump!]

However, Nomura didn't specify how long it will take for the series to reach its ending after Kingdom Hearts 4. Additionally, Nomura said that, for those who know the ending of Kingdom Hearts 3, the idea was to “reset” the series after that game. Nomura then explained that Kingdom Hearts 4 and the new mobile game Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link are both intended as new beginnings for the series. This was made in order to attract a new audience that might have not been following the series before.

When asking Nomura about the new setting of Quadratum, the developer explained that he intended the modern Shibuya aesthetic to reflect the idea of “unreality within reality.” He also shared some insight on one of the starting lines in the original Kingdom Hearts ("is any of this for real or not?”) Nomura stating that the idea of “unreality within reality” had been there since the start, and they are slowly moving towards reaching the conclusion to it.

Kingdom Hearts 4 is currently in development. There is no information on when the game will release nor which platforms it will appear on.

Tetsuya Nomura Is Thinking of Retiring in a Few Years

In a new interview with Young Jump, Kingdom Hearts series creator Tetsuya Nomura talked about the possibility of retiring from making games in a few years. He also discussed how they are having new writers working on that series, as well as the complexity of his stories. [Thanks, Young Jump!]

When asked if he sees the Kingdom Hearts series reaching a conclusion, Tetsuya Nomura joked that, since he only has a few years left before eventually retiring, he has to consider what will come first. This is when he said he has to consider either retiring or finishing the projects he's working on. However, the developer reassured fans by saying that he intends to finish his work on Kingdom Hearts 4.

When talking about Nomura’s scenarios and how complex they can be, the developer said that sometimes voice actors will have difficulty following the plot of the games. In these cases, Nomura and other staff will have to help offering details. However, Nomura himself encourages people to ask him about the scenario when in doubt.

As a new test or experiment for the series, Nomura said that he asked people who have never worked on the Kingdom Hearts series before to participate in the scenario writing for Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link. However, Nomura added that he will ultimately be the one in charge of the script.

Kingdom Hearts 4 is currently in development. The game was announced back in April 2022 and there is now target platforms nor a release window yet.

Kingdom Hearts Summer Game Fest

During a Q&A stream on Twitch on June 2, 2024, Summer Game Fest host Geoff Keighley shot down fans hoping for a new announcement concerning the Kingdom Hearts franchise at the 2024 event. Summer Games Fest is set to air on Friday June 7, 2024. (Thanks, Genki_JPN on X!)

Keighley took to Twitch to answer some questions from viewers over on The Game Awards' official channel. When responding to multiple inquiries about the presence of a Kingdom Hearts announcement at Summer Game Fest 2024, he said this:

People keep asking about Kingdom Hearts, I don't know why. Is that because we did (Final Fantasy VII Rebirth) last year? People are setting themselves up for failure, but you guys can keep hoping.

Geoff Keighley

You can watch Keighley's Q&A stream in full over on the Game Awards Twitch channel, with the comment about Kingdom Hearts at Summer Game Fest 2024 appearing at around 00:28:50. While not an official proclamation, Keighley's organizational role at Summer Game Fest make his words a pretty definitive statement on the rumors, so appears Kingdom Hearts fans will need to wait until another event to learn more about a new installment in the beloved series. The next mainline game in the series is set to be Kingdom Hearts 4, which was announced back in April 2022. Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link is also in the works for mobile devices. More recently, Square Enix announced updates would be coming to Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance HD on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.

Summer Game Fest 2024 is set to air via Twitch and Youtube on Friday June 7, 2024, at 2 pm PT or 5 pm ET.

Renowned Japanese singer and Kingdom Hearts theme extraordinaire Hikaru Utada just dropped a mega bomb with their Science Fiction album. This album doesn’t drop any new music, but rather, includes re-releases of songs like "Hikari," the Japanese version of the Kingdom Hearts theme “Simple and Clean.” It also makes it even harder to wait for the release of Kingdom Hearts 4 and Missing Link in the process.

This new re-recording of the Japanese version of the classic Kingdom Hearts theme is a bop, of course, but there’s more to it than that. This re-release of the 2002 track is a sharp reminder of the lack of information regarding the Kingdom Hearts series. More importantly, the severe delay between new details or a release of both Kingdom Hearts 4 and Missing Link.

For reference, Hikaru Utada’s new album dropped on April 10, 2024. This just so happens to fall around the two-year anniversary of both Kingdom Hearts 4 and Missing Link’s announcements. Sadly, precious little appeared in two years that followed. At least, worldwide, given there was a Japanese beta in 2023.

This re-recording of the Kingdom Hearts song "Hikari" doesn’t necessarily give us too much hope for more info soon, either. This is more like a coincidental event, if anything, which makes the whole situation more agonizing. That said, there is the potential for at least some Missing Link news in the near future. After all, it still has a release window of 2024 for Android and iOS. Until that release window changes, it is only a matter of time until we hear more about the latest mobile game in the series. There is a chance that Missing Link will even connect the past games to Kingdom Hearts 4 or offer some bit of lore to tie us over while we wait.

As for the lack of Kingdom Hearts 4 news, there could be a couple of reasons for that. For one, Square Enix has been quite busy lately. Final Fantasy XVI released last year in 2023, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth followed it up not even a full year later. Square Enix isn’t done either, as FFXIV: Dawntrail is also coming out in 2024. This means renowned Kingdom Hearts Director Tetsuya Nomura, is also quite busy with the recent releases.

It is possible Square Enix is waiting for games and expansions like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Final Fantasy XIV Dawntrail to come out to give some breathing room, then focus on the Kingdom Hearts series. If that is the case, we could finally see more about it in the latter half of 2024. But there is even a chance we may not hear anything until 2025.

As for when the game comes out, I would presume 2025 at the earliest. However, there is a chance it could even come out in 2026. I imagine we will know more once Missing Link begins its road to release. In the meantime, I will continue to listen to the new version of “Hikari” on repeat.

Kingdom Hearts 4 has no current release window or confirmed platforms. Missing Link is scheduled to release sometime in 2024 for Android and iOS.

Kingdom Hearts 4 is coming someday, being developed currently for Unreal Engine 5. Outside of the hub world of the Tokyo-like Quadratum, we know little about the locations Sora will visit in the installment. In the meantime while we wait, here are some of the Disney crossover worlds we hope to see in Kingdom Hearts 4.

Star Wars 26t4y

Tron was one of the most unique worlds Sora and Riku visited in Dream Drop Distance, and Star Wars feels like the next iteration of that sci-fi style. This feels like a shoe-in, such as Sora helping Rey to take on the First Order or even taking part in the Clone Wars. Plus, the Keyblade just makes so much sense with a lightsaber variant.

The Princess and the Frog 2a1452

Tangled finally happened in Kingdom Hearts 3 and it is one of my favorite worlds in the entire series. It stands to reason Disney will likely want another Disney princess (or two). Princess Tiana from The Princess and the Frog feels like a must-have in this next game. After all, players could play through the entirety of her movie’s plot, which would be amazing.

Moana 5k3r6y

In addition to Princess Tiana, Moana feels like the juggernaut Disney lead who deserves a visit to her beautiful island-centric world in the Kingdom Hearts 4. Much like Frozen in the most recent game, Moana was a massive blockbuster hit. The popularity of this movie franchise makes this one feel almost like a certainty more than any other on this list.

Marvel 2d722x

Who wouldn’t want to see Sora fighting alongside Iron Man, Captain America, or even Spider-Man? So many amazing arcs and storylines make sense for this crossover, such as the Battle of New York, teaming up with the X-Men, or a trippy journey through the multiverse. Plus, it would give the chance to provide Sora with a superpower or two in this fascinating world.

Versus XIII 2y1t6a

This one is a bit of a stretch and not even a Disney-themed world, but Final Fantasy Versus XIII was a heavily cinematic game that eventually turned into Final Fantasy XV. But with the character Yozora likely a significant character in Kingdom Hearts 4 — who looks like this canceled/reworked game’s early version of eventually Noctis — and the whole Verum Rex deal in 3, it feels like this is a chance to resurrect that game’s moody world in a unique way. Perhaps even Quadratum itself could be a version of it that would give director Tetsuya Nomura a chance to showcase a glimpse of what Versus XIII could’ve been.

Kingdom Hearts 4 will release in the future. It has no confirmed platforms or release date.

Kingdom Hearts 4 Art Celebrates FFVII Rebirth With Sora and Sephiroth

In honor of the launch of FFVII Rebirth, the Kingdom Hearts social media shared Kingdom Hearts 4 art of Sora with Sephiroth. It directly references a real ad campaign in Japan.

We can tell that this is Kingdom Hearts 4 art, because it is set in Quadratum. Sora is in Shibuya in front of the 104 buildings. Every billboard and screen shows the one-winged version of Sephiroth that appeared throughout the Kingdom Hearts series. You can see it in the message below.

https://twitter.com/_KINGDOMHEARTS/status/1763215930925187342

As mentioned before, this piece of celebratory art actually references something happening in the real world right now. In Shibuya in Tokyo, Japan, there are similar ads actually airing for the game. However, in that case, the imagery eventually results in seeing the version of Sephiroth from Nibelheim with the flames behind him in FFVII Rebirth, rather than the Kingdom Hearts version featured in the image above. That is running in Shibuya until March 3, 2024.

Square Enix shared a video of how that looks on the Japanese FFVII Remake social media .

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is available on the PS5, with the exclusivity arrangement ending on May 29, 2024. There is no release window yet for Kingdom Hearts 4.

Kingdom Hearts 4 New Information

In an interview with Famitsu, Kingdom Hearts series Director Tetsuya Nomura shared a few more details about Kingdom Hearts 4. He stated that the team will be prioritizing development on Kingdom Hearts 4 and that no new information beyond this interview will release anytime soon. That said, Nomura did reveal a bit of new information concerning several key characters, the Lost Masters, and the staff of Kingdom Hearts 4. [Thanks, ryokutya2089!]

Nomura reveals that the footage in the Kingdom Hearts 4 trailer was made in Unreal Engine 4. However, the game is being developed using Unreal Engine 5. He mentions that future footage will potentially include how Kingdom Hearts 4 will look on Unreal Engine 5. Regarding staff working on Kingdom Hearts 4, Tetsuya Nomura will be ed by Oka Masaru (Kingdom Hearts III) and Akiko Ishibashi (Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII).

Nomura also revealed that the Lost Masters will appear as a group similar to Organization XIII. This means that they will be working in opposition to Sora. Additionally, he spoke briefly about another character in Kingdom Hearts 4: a girl who apparently knows about Quadratum. While much about her is a mystery, Nomura hints that she is a character from Verum Rex. Nomura also touched on previously established characters and revealed that the 5 Masters, with the exception of Luxu, have disappeared. It is unclear if they will appear in Kingdom Hearts 4 in any capacity.

Kingdom Hearts 4 is in development.

[Thanks, ryokutya2089!] Nomura reveals that the footage in the Kingdom Hearts 4 trailer was made in Unreal Engine 4.

Kingdom Hearts 4 Gameplay

In an interview with Famitsu, Kingdom Hearts series Director Tetsuya Nomura elaborated on some of the gameplay systems that will appear in Kingdom Hearts 4. This includes the return of "Reaction Commands" from Kingdom Hearts 2. Nomura reveals that "Reaction Commands" will be making a return due to fans wanting to see the mechanic make a reappearance after Kingdom Hearts 3. Nomura also spoke very briefly about the "Build" option that showed up on the command bar. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

When ask about the various gameplay systems in Kingdom Heart 4, Nomura elaborated a bit on what the "Build" command actually relates to. This is what he had to say:

"The concept of that battle (in the trailer) is "Scrap and Build," with the "Build" command symbolizing it. I can't really tell you about it yet, but deconstruction and reconstruction will be the key."

More details concerning the "Scrap and Build" mechanic will appear in the future. Nomura asks readers to wait for a follow-up report to learn more. He also mentions that the visuals for the "Reaction Commands" are a placeholder for the time being. This means that this is potentially not what the mechanic will look like in the full release of the game.

Kingdom Hearts 4 is in development.

Kingdom Hearts 4

Square Enix announced that it is developing Kingdom Hearts 4, the next game in the mainline Kingdom Hearts series. The company made the announcement as part of the Kingdom Hearts 20th anniversary event held in Tokyo, Japan. Square Enix also released an announcement trailer for the game. No release dates or platforms were included in the announcement.

Sora will return as the main protagonist in Kingdom Hearts 4. The game will take place in Quadratum, the "fictional" world based on the real-life city of Shibuya, Tokyo. The announcement trailer gives fans a brief glimpse of what gameplay will look like. After waking up from a deep sleep, Sora fights against a large black monster in the center of a city. Strelitzia also makes an appearance at the beginning of the trailer.

Toward the end of the video, both Donald Duck and Goofy appear traveling in a dark location, looking for an unknown person. Then, a blue flame appears behind them, and the voice of what sounds to be Hades is heard. Hades has appeared in all past mainline Kingdom Hearts games as an antagonist.
