Neon Genesis Evangelion XR Extended Reality games are under development

Pixelity announced that it has started working on new XR (Extended Reality) games based on Neon Genesis Evangelion. The company added that it has signed a contract with the Evangelion franchise owner Khara, which gave it a license to create games based on the classic anime title.

The company also specified that it will base the games on the 26-episode anime show that aired on television in 1995, rather than the Rebuild of Evangelion movies that ran from 2007 to 2021. It will also split the project into three episodic parts—in a similar fashion to Square Enix's Final Fantasy VII Remake project. The first entry is slated for release in 2026.

Pixelity will produce the Neon Genesis Evangelion XR games with Action Adventure as the genre. The player will enter the anime's world as a new original character, and they will also be able to interact with the series' existing characters like Shinji and Rei. The games will have players undergo missions while witnessing immersive battles between the Evangelion units and the Angels.

The first of the three episodic Extended Reality games based on Neon Genesis Evangelion is planned for release in 2026. Pixelity will publish more details about the game, including its full title and platform list, at a later time.

Hideaki Anno Commented on Gundam GQuuuuuux Beginning

Studio Khara shared a message from its founder and Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX co-writer Hideaki Anno about the Gundam GQuuuuuux – Beginning – prequel movie. With this new series, the animator and filmmaker wants to depict a new type of tale within the Gundam IP.

Anno said that the beginning of Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- might surprise viewers because of how faithful of a representation it is and the exceptionally high energy and ion of the staff working on it. However, Anno believes Gundam GQuuuuuuX is one more piece in the vast grounds of the Mobile Suit Gundam series.

Anno continued by saying that, as they continue to be involved in the large contents of the Gundam IP, they should aim to revitalize and expand the franchise with works that take a different approach from pre-existing stories and that can be enjoyed by a wider audience. With that idea in mind, Anno approached Gundam GQuuuuuux Director Kazuya Tsurumaki to make sure the prequel portion of the anime received a certain amount of time.

NHK radio show focusing on Hideaki Anno works Evangelion and Nadia

NHK has revealed that it will air a radio show focusing on Hideaki Anno and two of his anime series. The show, titled "Today is a Whole-Day Focus on 'Hideaki Anno's World,'" will go live on February 11, 2025.

The radio show will have a particular focus on two of Hideaki Anno's anime, both of which will celebrate major anniversary milestones in 2025. The Neon Genesis Evangelion anime show is having its 30th anniversary since it premiered in 1995. The other title will be Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, the 1990 anime show that has its 35th anniversary in 2025. As a side note, while the Evangelion franchise has been more frequently featured in the Super Robot Wars crossover games, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water made its debut in the 2018 entry Super Robot Wars X.

The announcer Azusa Miyazaki will host the show, with the anime and tokusatsu researcher Ryusuke Hikawa providing explanations. mcdonald's japan evangelion

The Japanese McDonald’s is teasing an collaboration with Evangelion. More information on it will appear in the future.

There’s absolutely no information on what this promotion might entail. McDonald’s only posted a picture that has the characters for “Preview” against a black background. Khara and Project Eva also appear in the bottom left corner, making it clear that this McDonald’s promotion will be with Evangelion. Currently, it’s unknown if this promotion will focus on Happy Meal toys or if it’s for new limited menu items.

In the past, McDonald’s Japan’s collaborations with anime usually resulted in a limited food item. For example, it released two special burgers for a Gundam promotion in 2022. Meanwhile, in 2023, it had a limited menu for its One Piece promotion. For a more recent collaboration, McDonald’s teamed up with Sakura Miko of hololive. However, this is to promote the graroco burger, which is a seasonal burger that comes back every winter season in Japan.

Evangelion is a popular and influential mecha series that debuted on TV in 1995. Recent collaborations and merchandise of the show focus on the Rebuild of Evangelion film series, which retells the story and adds a new ending. These films came out between 2007 and 2021. Despite how old the show is, companies still release merchandise of the characters or collaborate with the franchise due to its enduring popularity.

More information on the Evangelion McDonald’s Japan collaboration will appear at a later date.

Space Battleship Yamato from Star Blazers 2202

Hideaki Anno and his studio Khara will produce a new anime show based on the Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato series. The renowned Japanese animator best known for the Evangelion franchise made the announcement by himself when he hosted the Space Battleship Yamato 50th anniversary screening event. [Thanks, AV Watch!]

Khara's press release revealed that the studio has earned consent and privilege to produce the new anime from the Space Battleship Yamato rights holders Voyager Holdings and Tohokushinsha Film Corporation. Khara is working on the project's plans as of this announcement, and it aims to begin the show's production in 2025.

The press release added that the new Star Blazers anime show by Hideaki Anno and Studio Khara will take a different path from the ongoing remakes. Xebec's successor Studio Mother released the first episode of Be Forever Yamato: Rebel 3199 in Japanese theaters in July 2024. This title will consist of seven films, and the studio will release the second episode on November 22, 2024.

Space Battleship Yamato originally appeared as a TV anime series by Leiji Matsumoto that first aired in Japan in October 1974. The franchise is also known in the US by its localized title Star Blazers. Xebec gradually released remakes of the classic anime series, starting with Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199 in 2013. Bandai Namco included the latter in the 2017 crossover game Super Robot Wars V, which is available in Japan and Asia on PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Studio Khara will start producing its own Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato anime show in 2025.

evangelion crossing expo

The Evangelion Crossing Expo will appear in Tokyo from September 13 to October 22, 2024. It’ll cost 2000 JPY ($14.10) for a ticket and you can check it out at the Roppongi Museum. [Thanks, Game Watch!]

The exhibition started in Tokyo but Khara didn't return to the city for about two years. The Crossing Expo exhibition contains over 4000 pieces of Evangelion merchandise from past projects, displays, and more. There will also be little description placards for each one, which will focus on the history and charm of the franchise. Items range from figures of characters and replicas of weapons all the way to pachinko machines.

Outside of checking out the items on display, you can also buy merchandise or use the Evangelion Unit-01 AR view. This will display a Unit-01 looking down from the roof of the museum. The machine will stand at over 25 meters tall, so you can pretend that a giant robot really showed up.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is a highly popular and influential anime that came out in 1995. Since then, Rebuild of Evangelion came out to rewrite certain plot endings, as well as provide a new ending. The promotional art for Evangelion Crossing Expo includes Mari, meaning that it’s in the Rebuild universe. But considering how long the original Evangelion’s been around, it’s highly likely that some of the items in the exhibition are from the pre-Rebuild era.

The Evangelion Crossing Expo exhibition will be in Tokyo from September 13 - October 22, 2024.

Rebuild of Evangelion Rei Ayanami Tentative figure by Sega

Sega has revealed a new version of the figure modeled after Rei Ayanami from the Rebuild of Evangelion movie series. The company will release this figure in Winter 2024 in Japan.

The company originally released the tentative Rei Ayanami figure in February 2022. The new figure set will have the "30th Anniversary Version" moniker to distinguish it from the previous release. The new title will also match the franchise's anniversary milestone. While the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime started airing in October 1995, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's manga adaptation appeared first in late December 1994.

In the Japanese tweet, Sega mentioned that the new version will have a different base. People can see how the newer version will have a rocky base instead of a plain circle with the following comparison images:

This is not the only Rei Ayanami figure Sega is working on. The company has also revealed another figure featuring the long-haired Rei that will appear under its S-FIRE brand. Pre-orders for the latter figure are still available until October 7, 2024. Sega will release the long-haired Rei Ayanami figure in July 2025.

The Rebuild of Evangelion Rei Ayanami ~30th Anniversary Version~ Luminasta Vignettium figure will be available as crane game prizes in Japan in the 2024 Winter window, which generally runs from December 2024 to February 2025.
