Kaiju No 8 GFuel Involves a Good Balance of Sweetness

GFuel often puts together partnerships with games and anime series. Do the tastes tied to properties always make sense? No. (I don’t really think of citrus fruits or strawberries when I play Persona 3 Reload.) But after a busy not-E3-June, I did try the Kaiju No 8 Full Release GFuel inspired by the anime to help stay awake and survive. While I don’t immediately associate kiwi or berry with Kafka or kaiju in general, I was really pleased with the flavor and it did help me get through some long work days.

It’s honestly been a while since I did drink GFuel, prior to binge with the Kaiju No 8 Kiwi Berry Blitz energy formula variant. Like I used to rely on the Peach Ring Sonic the Hedgehog version. I appreciated that one because it had a peach flavor, without tasting too artificial or having a strong aftertaste. In the case of the this variety, I tried a bit of the powder on its own first. The powder color (and ensuing drink) is a lighter shade of the teal associated with Kafka in the series. The smell of berry comes through more than kiwi, as you might expect. I also didn’t notice any chemical scent, which was a positive. I recall some earlier products from the company could smell a bit awry.

Even when I just sampled a taste of the powder for the Kaiju No 8 GFuel, I noticed that it wasn’t overwhelmingly sweet. The powder definitely tasted more like a fruit-based kiwi and berry product. However, it was a bit more subtle than I expected. Like when I was a kid, I would have probably gone for Pixy Stix in this flavor.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toP0fC5q6XU&ab_channel=GFUEL

Once fully mixed, the actual Kaiju No 8 Full Release GFuel ends up looking a bit more true to Kafka’s color scheme in his kaiju form. The kiwi flavor is blended well into it, in such a way that it doesn’t come across as strong as it does in say the Snapple strawberry kiwi variety. It also definitely tastes like there is a mix of berries used in putting the flavor together, rather than a straightforward blend of strawberry and kiwi. I definitely tasted some blueberry and raspberry in there. Oddly enough, I felt like some pineapple came through as well, and I wasn’t surprised when I checked the ingredient list to see that powder was included in the ingredients. Also, I appreciated that this was a lighter color drink that didn’t stain the glass and was easier to clean.

As for the actual amount of energy, it was fine. I’ve always noticed with GFuel that there is sufficient caffeine and other energy-related vitamins and ingredients in the ensuing drinks to keep me awake. A serving of the Kaiju No 8 Full Release variant is 140mg, which is less caffeine than two cups of coffee. Since I’m not the biggest fan of coffee and I don’t want the over 200mg of caffeine I’d get in like an energy shot or 300mg in something like a Bang Energy, it’s perfect. I don’t end up feeling shaky after a glass of this, and it usually doesn’t have a negative effect on my regular sleep patterns.

As far as GFuel anime tie-in flavors goes, I enjoyed the Kaiju No 8 Full Release variety. The kiwi and berry flavors go well together, and the other fruit powders tossed into it don’t detract from that. The amount of energy I got out of it helped. Plus while it initially didn’t scream “Kaiju No 8” to me, the final color of the drink does match Kafka’s energy.

The Kaiju No 8 Full Release GFuel is available now, and the anime is streaming on Crunchyroll. Viz Media handles the manga outside Japan. Kaiju No 8: The Game is in development for PCs and mobile devices.

Kaiju No 8

Naoya Matsumoto's ongoing Shonen Jump manga Kaiju No. 8 captured the hearts of readers with its adult themes and comedic charm. Now, with its anime adaptation produced by Production I.G and studio Khara, the series soared to new heights, aiming to be a real contender this Anime season. And again, it's using those same mature elements to set itself apart.

From its thrilling first episode, Kaiju No. 8 establishes itself as a standout in the anime landscape. The story follows Kafka Hibino, a sanitation worker harboring dreams of ing the Defense Force to battle Kaiju, towering monsters wreaking havoc on humanity. Despite his childhood promise and aspirations, Kafka finds himself stuck in a mundane job, haunted by a sense of failure and regret.

This adaptation perfectly portrays the world of the manga with a grounded familiarity rarely found in anime adaptations. The entire main cast are designed with realistic proportions and simple silhouettes that exude individuality and charm, whilst still giving the sense that these characters could be people you see in everyday life. This choice visually and narratively enhances Kafka's journey of maturity and self-discovery, by making these characters that much easier for the audience to connect with on an emotional level.

Speaking of Kafka, His longing to prove himself, coupled with reflections on past decisions, adds layers of depth to his character. The weight of failed promises and the feeling of not measuring up to one's own ambitions resonated profoundly with me, echoing the universal experience of the battle to make personal progress and learning to navigate life's challenges.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0OZWzTAqHg

Beyond Kafka's personal journey, Kaiju No. 8 examines the complexities of a world plagued by monsters. Kafka’s own background as Monster Cleaner, pokes fun at the often occurring trope concerning the damage left behind by Kaiju. However, the Monsters in this story are far from mere adversaries. These Kaiju can easily symbolize power, destruction, and even ambition. Through these beasts and characters like Kikoru Shinomiya, the series offers a nuanced exploration of the dual nature of strength and vulnerability.

"I don't think there's anything wrong with giving up...But it's not good to lie to yourself." This powerful quote from the first episode encapsulates the struggle to find closure with unfulfilled expectations and the harsh realities of adulthood.

In a genre often defined by spectacle and action, Kaiju No. 8 provides a look at maturity, regret, and the endless struggle to chase dreams. It's a testament to the power of anime to inspire, entertain, and explore the vastness of the human experience.

The Kaiju No 8 anime is currently airing on Crunchyroll, and the manga is handled outside Japan by Viz Media.

Uniqlo Kaiju No 8 Shirts Are in Stores Now

New anime shirts are at Uniqlo, and this time they are for the series Kaiju No 8. People can find the six unisex styles both in-stores and online.

As usual, the shirts are $24.90 each. They are designed for adults. The smallest size is XXS, and the largest is XXXL. Some of the shirts involve specific characters. For example, there’s one with Kafka and Mina, another with Soshiro, a solo Kaiju No 8 one, and one with Kafka that also shows his Kaiju No 8 identity. The remaining two feature the full JAKDF Third Division and the Monster Sweeper crews.

Here’s a full look at the Kaiju No 8 Uniqlo collection of shirts. While most have designs on the front and back, the Kafka/Kaiju and Kafka and Mina ones do not.

This is one of many Uniqlo crossover collections to appear over the last few weeks. For May the Fourth, Star Wars shirts appeared. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom ones appeared before that. April 2024 started with a Detective Conan/Case Closed collection.

The Kaiju No 8 Uniqlo shirts are available in stores and online now. The anime is streaming on services like Crunchyroll. The manga is handled outside Japan by Viz Media.

Tokyo Ghoul, Attack on Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen, and many other action anime series follow a similar trope (you know the one if you’ve watched them), and it works. But too many series lean into this realm, sometimes not handling the concept as well, and it is beginning to show. Such is the case with the latest Spring 2024 anime series Kaiju No 8.

The first episode of Kaiju No 8 honestly gripped me from the beginning to almost the end of the premiere. This was largely due to the main character Kafka Hibino. In his version of modern-day Earth, kaiju (large monsters like Godzilla) attack on the regular. He is part of the unfortunate clean-up crew who doesn’t fight these monsters, but rather takes care of the mess left behind by the Defense Force team that does.

As you can imagine, this leads to some gruesome and disgusting sequences as Hibino cleans up intestines, brains, and other disturbing matter after the Defense Force takes out a kaiju. This actually intrigued me, as it was so funny and engrossing (or rather, gross-ing in some cases). I enjoyed the idea of a show focusing on someone who was essentially this janitor for the Anti-Kaiju Defense Force.

However, it didn’t stop there. The end of the show made it clear this was never going to be what the series is about. Instead, it is indeed about high octane action as soldiers try to defeat these kaiju. Without spoiling too much, it certainly ends in a ridiculous manner that doesn’t land as well as some of the other iterations of this idea in the past.

To Kaiju No 8’s credit, the anime remained funny even after the yawn-inducing trope, which gives me some hope. After all, it still seems like Hibino will be at the center of the series and is the same goofy, lackadaisical guy as before. In addition, I am curious to see more about his backstory. The first episode hints at some connections between Hibino and a certain other star who is an established member of the team tackling kaiju. I look forward to see where that heads down the line.

My only concern is how Kaiju No 8 anime will handle the final twist from the premiere. So many of these series go down the same route of character dealing with this unfortunate incident and the response of everyone against them. I have already seen that so many times now. It would be best if this series just made the twist a natural thing and everyone got to business.

For now, we will have to wait and see on that front. At least the animation quality seems promise. This series has solid, modern designs, but it doesn’t take itself too seriously here, either. The characters are a bit off and goofy, which help lend to the tone. But the animation studio Production I.G. knows when to show off in the action sequences. Even the 3D of the kaiju, which I don’t always love in anime, doesn’t look too noticeable or bad here.

I look forward to watching more of the Kaiju No 8 anime, but I hope it doesn’t lean too much into the idea of trying to replace the greats that are ending soon like Jujutsu Kaisen, Demon Slayer, and My Hero Academia. It works best when it leans into its own humorous identity.

Kaiju No. 8 is streaming right now on Crunchyroll.

Kaiju No 8: B-Side Manga Begins in Shonen Jump

The Kaiju No 8: B-Side spin-off manga series is now running in Shonen Jump. Both MangaPlus and Viz Media have the first chapter available online in English for people to read for free.

The original Kaiju No 8 series follows Kafka Hibino, a man who gains the ability to turn into the kaiju he formerly would clean up after for the government. As a result, he gains the ability to transform into one and ends up the official Defense Force alongside a coworker named Reno Ichikawa that he met cleaning up after monsters. In that storyline, Soshiro Hoshina is a ing cast member who is also a part of the government division fighting kaiju. This new B-Side manga focuses on his swordsmanship and work with the Third Division.

This story begins with Hoshina training with swords. After that, we see him take part in an interview about the new rookies in his division, during which he discusses Hibino. Later in the chapter, we also get to seeIchikawa, Hibino, and Hakua Igarashi in a training session with Hoshina. But once that segment is done, the first chapter seems to suggest that the rest of the series will focus on him when he first ed Third Division and started working under Mina Ashiro.

Kaiju No 8 Anime

Toho Animation announced it is producing an anime adaptation of Kaiju No 8. A new teaser trailer gives fans a brief glimpse at how the anime adaptation may look and feel. Furthermore, a new official website, as well as an English Twitter for the anime adaptation, has appeared. Toho Animation has not confirmed the animation studio for the adaptation.

Kaiju No 8, also known as Monster #8, is a popular science-fiction kaiju manga series in Japan. The story follows Kafka Hibino, a member of a kaiju clean-up crew of sorts, who dreams of becoming a part of the Third Division defense force. After gaining the ability to shape-shift into a Kaiju, Kafka is determined to the Third Division with the help of one of his childhood friends.

The teaser trailer doesn't show any footage of the actual anime. Instead, it's a collection of black and white photos and animations of various streets in Tokyo, with audio hinting at some sort of Kaiju attack. The final seconds of the video reveal smoke clouds and a creature in the distance, before cutting to black.

The manga series first appeared on the Shonen Jump + app for free in July 2020. As of writing, Kaiju No 8 has seven volumes in publication. The author of the series, Naoya Matsumoto, is a Shonen Jump veteran and has had his works serialized in the magazine since 2009.

After gaining the ability to shape-shift into a Kaiju, Kafka is determined to the Third Division with the help of one of his childhood friends. https://twitter.com/KaijuNo8_O_EN/status/1555206933447163909?s=20&t=3dvOm-aP-3xfDqOZ-jxzDg The teaser trailer doesn't show any footage of the actual anime. Kaiju No 8 is a Surprisingly Optimistic Manga 5u1f6c https://siliconera.voiranime.info/kaiju-no-8-is-a-surprisingly-optimistic-manga/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=kaiju-no-8-is-a-surprisingly-optimistic-manga https://siliconera.voiranime.info/kaiju-no-8-is-a-surprisingly-optimistic-manga/#respond <![CDATA[Jenni Lada]]> Tue, 07 Dec 2021 20:00:55 +0000 <![CDATA[Featured]]> <![CDATA[Europe]]> <![CDATA[Japan]]> <![CDATA[Kaiju No 8]]> <![CDATA[North America]]> <![CDATA[Playtests]]> <![CDATA[Viz Media]]> https://siliconera.voiranime.info/?p=905557 <![CDATA[

Kaiju No 8 is Surprisingly Optimistic

Stories about people who turn into potentially grotesque or terrifying creatures tend to, well, not turn out very well for their protagonists. Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis and Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 are good examples. Ordinary person finds their life changed when they change. There’s no way to go back, they lose opportunities to connect with people, and things go wrong. Naoya Matsumoto’s Kaiju No 8 is a manga that seems like it could head that same sort of direction in theory, but in reality its first volume is more hopeful than I expected.

The world in which Kafka Hibino lives faces a major problem: kaiju. These giant monsters wreak havoc on cities. There is an official defense force that deals with them. There is also an official Monster Sweeper company designed to clean up after them. While Kafka once dreamed of being a member of the former, instead he works for the latter. The first volume begins with him and his coworkers dealing with the most recent (deceased) kaiju, attempting to clean it up within a week. He’s essentially in limbo. He’s getting by. There’s a solid job. He isn’t making good on a promise to a childhood friend—Third Division star kaiju hunter Mina Ashiro—but he seems “fine.”

Kaiju No 8 Is Surprisingly Optimistic CoverThat changes when Reno Ichikawa, a new recruit, s Monster Sweeper. He wants to be a part of the defense force and has a bit of an edge. He calls Kafka out on “surviving,” rather than “living.” But Kafka helps him out. The two genuinely connect. It’s then that we see the first potential shot. While it seemed Kafka missed his chance to the Defense Force, Reno tells him the new maximum age to is 33. Kafka is 32. There’s still time.

Of course, Kaiju No 8 doesn’t forget the nature of the genre. This is a brutal world, and a manga that doesn’t play around. Right when he gets his shot, a kaiju threatens it. But even then, it is more of a showcase of the potential of both Kafka and Reno.

Shortly after, it happens. A major meeting results in Kafka transforming. Not full time. But an incident means he gains the ability to shape shift into a kaiju. But rather than inhibit him, it isn’t getting in the way of him finally getting his shot in the way someone might think. Yes, it paints a target on his back when he is in his kaiju form. The Defense Force is going target monsters. But he still has Reno as an ally and friend. He’s still going to attempt to the Defense Force, the group out to get him.

The result is a situation in which the reader starts thinking, “Maybe this could actually work out for him.” Yes, there is the potential for things to go very wrong in the Kaiju No 8 manga. This is also only the very first book, so there’s still tension and plot building up. But rather than things seeming dark for Kafka, it’s like there’s only potential ahead of him. And given everything he’s dealing with, the situation makes a person want to root for him.

Kaiju No 8 volume 1 is available in English from Viz Media. In Japan, it is known as Monster #8.
