JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Golden Wind 3 Showcases Characters Narancia and Abbacchio

The structure of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Golden Wind is such that the early volumes give Giorno Giovanna and his allies a chance to establish themselves, and volume 3 of the manga is no different. Given the current situation, which involves Team Bucciarati protecting an important person, it provides more opportunities to showcase folks. In particular, the Golden Wind characters Narancia Ghirga and Leone Abbachio are highlighted. It gives a chance to see how two folks who might not have featured as prominently early on stand out. While both are notable and valuable , sometimes they haven’t stood out as much as Giorno and Bruno until now

Narancia Ghirga is the more vocal of the two Golden Wind characters, which might make him the more recognizable of the two. Prior to this point in the series, there were certain hallmarks associated with him. He’s one of the younger . That youthfulness comes through in his interactions. I mean, he is the first member of the crew to start dancing the iconic scene. But JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure as a whole constantly shows Stand s’ strengths. Golden Wind especially so, given its mafia setting.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Golden Wind 3 Showcases Narancia and AbbacchioWhich means the first half of Golden Wind volume 3 is about Narancia impressing us. Li’l Bomber is a small plane. While he’s going through his challenge, he’s forced to fight alone. He’s in a tight spot. But repeatedly, with both Li’l Bomber and without, he shows his problem-solving capabilities. He proves more observant and prepared than someone might expect. From stowing away a weapon to save for later, to considering the right target to attack, he shows an unexpected thoughtfulness. It is especially impressive given when we first meet him at the beginning of Golden Wind, we see him learning from Fugo and attempting to better himself due to not being as “book” smart as the other.

As for Leone Abbacchio, Golden Wind so far presented him as an intelligent person, but perhaps not the most agreeable one. His loyalty to Bruno seems clear. We’ve seen him stand beside and fight to protect him and the crew against pursuers in the second volume of the manga. Moody Jazz appeared before. We know what it is capable of doing. But in this third volume, we get an even better idea of who Abbacchio is and what he’s willing to do.

Throughout the second half of volume 3 of Golden Wind, we see many sides of Abbacchio. We get to better understand what he’s willing to do for the sake of the mission. This can mean hostility toward allies or drastic sacrifices. We see him use Moody Jazz freely, even though there was hesitance about showing it in a past volume. Most importantly, we learn his backstory. His past directly influences his present, and we see how it’s shaped his actions and Stand.

All of this means that Hirohiko Araki’s character development and pacing is still spot on as JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Golden Wind continues. The focus helps in many ways. It shows exactly why Narancia Ghirga and Leone Abbacchio belong on Bucciarati’s team in Golden Wind. We get to see how deadly the people around Giorno and his crew are. There are also the reminders that no Stand or Stand should ever be underestimated.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Golden Wind volume 3 is available now through Viz Media. The anime is streaming via Netflix.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Golden Wind Vol. 2 Shows Characters Bonding

The “JoJos” in the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure series are never really alone, as in each part there are other characters assisting the lead. In JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 5: Golden Wind volume 1, Giorno Giovanna meets Bruno Bucciarati. It establishes the first important relationship on his quest to fulfill his dream of becoming a don and making Naples a better place. While the second installment continues down that path, it also does something else important. In volume 2, we Hirohiko Araki puts together perfect situations to help bond Giorno’s new allies together while getting him closer to his dream.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Golden Wind Vol. 2 Shows Characters BondingThe first volume of Golden Wind is all about establishing Giorno and making sure we understand why we should root for him, and volume 2 is about doing the same for the characters helping him. We quickly learn that ione Capo Polpo’s underlings are unique individuals. That is, odds are they have their own Stands. Which makes sense. I mean, look at the series as a whole. But this is the mafia and Giorno is new. We can’t expect to have everything revealed to him, and by extension us, right away. But Araki handles things in such a way that, by the end of the volume, them all trusting each other and Giorno feels believable.

Things are off to a strong start at the outset. Araki establishes the closeness between of Bucciarati’s group. The four are sitting together, having tea. Pannacotta Fugo is tutoring Narancia Ghirga. That action shows the affection between them. (Even with what happens when the session doesn’t go as expected.) We see Guido Mista’s superstitions at play. (And how the group accepts them.) Leone Abbacchio is established as someone who might test people. And when he does, no one gives him away.

What really helps establish things right away is how Giorno handles things. He’s aware that he needs these people on his side. He has to prove himself. So, he does. He shows at the outset that he has a Stand. But he doesn’t reveal Gold Experience immediately. He doesn’t show what he does. Once the group gets a chance to move Bucciarati up the ranks, Giorno sacrifices himself for the greater good. The decision proves to Abbacchio, the person who’d be most difficult to win over, that Giorno could be trusted. In every situation with his new allies, Giorno is forthright with Gold Experience.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Golden Wind Vol. 2 Shows Characters Bonding aWhich, in turn, helps propel the rest of the story forward. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 5: Golden Wind volume 2 then spends the rest of the volume showing what Abbacchio, Mista, and Narancia can do. Araki also handles it in a tactful way. We aren’t seeing each person’s Stand on display at once. Situations occur that gradually dole them out. One after another, we see what people are capable of when appropriate. The natural progression makes each reveal more satisfying. We also get additional scenarios where we see these existing work with Giorno. In addition to the interactions with Abbacchio, we see him work with Mista as well.

It also means that by the end of volume 2, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 5: Golden Wind is set up for the main event. We know what all of team Bucciarati can do. We’re aware of the dynamics between these JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure characters. And right at the cliffhanger, we’re introduced to a plotline that will carry on through the rest of this arc.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 5: Golden Wind volume 2 is now available from Viz Media. Part 3 will release on February 1, 2022. The anime adaptation is available on Netflix and Crunchyroll.

jojo's bizarre adventure golden wind giorno header

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is the sort of series where the characters, their motivations, their Stand abilities, and the conflicts that arise from all of them coming together make for compelling storylines. The JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 5: Golden Wind manga, with new hero Giorno Giovanna as the latest “JoJo,” is no exception. And with the first volume, we get to see how effective Hirohiko Araki is at quickly getting people invested in a character and story.

jojo's bizarre adventure golden wind mangaThe first thing JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 5: Golden Wind manga does to get us interested in Giorno is show that Jotaro Kujo himself is investigating him. To know that the new protagonist, who we know nothing about, is worthy of his attention and interest makes him more interesting. Especially since another familiar face, Koichi Hirose, is tasked with finding the teenager. This offers a connection to something familiar, while still giving Giorno and his story space to stand on their own.

It also helps that the rest of his introduction is quite memorable. As Koichi points out, “Stand s are drawn to one another.” So we see this wannabe mafioso pulling a small-time crime—theft—which in turn leads to him encountering one Stand after another. And while yes, fights happen, they don’t always go the way you expect. Shortly after meeting Koichi, an encounter with an actual criminal shows a Giorno where he personally didn’t touch his opponent. And after meeting Bruno Bucciarati and engaging in an actual fight with both people using their Stands, it leads to a potential alliance and means of achieving his dream.

Everything about Giorno in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 5: Golden Wind makes you want to root for him. He had a rough childhood and could have become a villain, but instead wants to pursue a villainous position to help others. Though he’s young, he’s aware and intelligent enough to show good judgment and smart tactics during a fight. But also while his intentions aren’t bad, he’s absolutely fine with stealing and criminal activities. To quote Koichi again, “He’s refreshing.” It makes you want to learn more about him.

It also helps that the presentation is handled quite well. As is common with Viz Media’s JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure manga releases, the physical copies of Golden Wind are hardcover releases with some pages that offer a burst of color for added emphasis. In the case of the first volume, the first portion of the initial chapter where Koichi arrives and meets Giorno and the beginning of the third chapter when Giorno and Bruno begin to fight both have that effect. It really highlights the importance of the moment and impact it has on the rest of both that chapter and the story as a whole.

The result is that the first volume of the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 5: Golden Wind manga absolutely hooks the reader. The narrative decisions make us immediately see that Giorno is deserving of our attention, then backs that up with looks at his past and insights into the person he is now to emphasize why he’s compelling. We’re introduced to his dream and see him take his first steps toward it. And, by the time the first volume is done, we want to see if Giorno can pursue his ion with ione.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 5: Golden Wind is available in hardcover and digitally from Viz Media.
