As a lifelong Akira Toriyama fan, I went into Sand Land knowing I would enjoy my time messing with the vehicular combat and exploring the world of the manga. What I didn’t expect was how much I would end up liking it. The world of Sand Land is fully realized, easy to jump into for fans and newcomers alike, and a fantastic farewell from the late manga creator and developer ILCA.

In Sand Land, players take on the role of Fiend Prince Beelzebub, a youthful demon that teams up with his demon friend Thief and the human sheriff Rao to find the Legendary Spring in order to find a solution to the extreme drought that is ailing the titular country of Sand Land. The game is a direct adaptation of Akira Toriyama’s one-shot manga released in 2000. In addition to going over the events of the manga, the game covers the new content written by Toriyama for the recent anime adaptation that started airing earlier in 2024. One of these additions is new character Ann. In the anime, Ann only appears after the first half of the story. In the game, Ann appears very early on and is a bit more involved in the plot of the first arc of the game. This offers a nice narrative remix for those familiar with the anime.

Despite being an adaptation, players don’t need to read nor watch the source material to fully enjoy their time with the game. Sand Land offers a number of lovingly written characters. Maybe I’m biased, since I like serious-yet-gentle old men that are on a road to atone and learn from their mistakes, but I think that Rao is the standout ally in the game. And of course, Beelzebub is a dastardly rascal that I can’t help but love. I found the writing to be pretty solid and fun, and I think that Sand Land in particular stands out among Toriyama’s other works, offering a simple yet great narrative exploring an anti-militarist sentiment focused on humanitarian cooperation.

The gameplay loop in Sand Land revolves around exploring the vast desert while alternating between a growing roster of vehicles, engaging in fights with both local fauna and the King’s army, and repopulating the ghost town of Spino. The latter is a unique addition to the game, and it’s one of its most engaging aspects. As players complete side quests, people from all over the world will Spino as new residents. Some of the stories tied to these characters are simple and fun, while some can be quite sobering. New inhabitants also means more vendors and new facilities, like your own customizable room, a paint shop, or a bar where players can pick up bounties. The way in which the main story of the game and the micronarratives found in Spino combine helps enrich the world of Sand Land.

Players will start the game with a lengthy tutorial section that naturally teaches that, while on-foot exploration and combat is viable, they should spend most of their time traversing the vast wasteland via a variety of vehicles. As the mainstay in the roster, tanks are powerful and relatively fast, serving as great all-rounders. Other vehicles like cars or motorbikes are fast, but are trickier to aim at enemies, or offer alternative ways of engaging in combat, while others like hoverboards allow players to avoid dangerous terrain. However, it can take quite a while to get the ball rolling and acquire different interesting vehicles.

As part of the main quest, players will need a variety of different vehicles, each suited for different situations. I found my first roadblock during the tutorial teaching me how to build a Jump-bot. While the game takes you through the steps of where to find a blueprint and frame, it doesn’t teach you at any moment how to find the different parts to complete it, nor the materials needed for the parts. This led to me spending around 5 hours to find the requirements, only to be taught how to craft them myself after completing it. I find that altering the order of these two quests would have made for a better paced tutorial, as I didn’t have trouble finding materials after this moment of forced scarcity.

That said, vehicle customization and combat is great. There is a large number of different vehicles, each with different strong points and weaknesses. While the game is generally not difficult, some encounters had me alternating between vehicles in order to adapt to the pace and use the different weapons I equipped. For example, against groups of enemies with various tanks and several infantrymen carrying rocket launchers, I would use the gravity gun attached to my jump-bot to gather all small enemies in the same spot, switch to my tank and fire my two-round battery to eliminate them in a swift strike, and then jump into my hovercraft to strafe while shooting quad rockets at the bigger targets without the danger of being sniped. While enemy variety can be a bit limited, boss fights are great. There are plenty of unique encounters, from organized tank battalions, aircraft, motorbike fights, and even combat armor duels.

In contrast, on-foot combat is not as fleshed out, but still offers a serviceable experience. Light and strong attack buttons allow for a few combo strings, and Beelzebub can use various abilities like a rushdown of punches, a boulder throw, or an AoE shockwave. These come in handy during the scripted on-foot sequences that serve to break up the pace. Another element to combat and exploration are party abilities. Thief, Rao, and Ann can learn various ive and active abilities that help. Thief’s abilities focus on acquiring resources, while Rao can deploy his own tank and assist Beelzebub in combat, and Ann helps as the mechanic by offering healing to vehicles and ive abilities. During the on-foot fights the party will also engage with enemies, and it is very fun seeing Rao be the coolest guy in Sand Land.

When it comes to the volume of content, Sand Land can be a pretty long game. The main quest alone can take players between 30 to 40 hours to complete depending on how much side content they do, and even more if they go for completionism. Even 35 hours in, the game was still giving me new gadgets and completely unique vehicles. To top it off, the game features a variety of side content, like racing tracks, bounties, and an arena. And if the main Sand Land region was already vast enough, the second part of the game takes players to Forest Land, a green and lush new area introduced in the anime.

The visuals in the game are pretty beautiful, with characters sporting a nice cell shaded style, and the world offering a lot of visual variety. Even the Sand Land region is varied, with its different styles of deserts, like dunes and badlands. And, as one can expect, the character and mech designs by Akira Toriyama are top notch.

Sand Land shows what can be done with licensed manga and games. The game is a great vehicular action-RPG, and easily one of the best anime and manga games available. Despite some early pacing issues, the game is at its best when introducing a vast and engrossing world, accompanied by the beautiful visuals and great story penned by the late Akira Toriyama.

Sand Land will release on April 26, 2024 for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam. A demo is now available.

Yoko Taro Confirms New Bakuken Stage Play Will Appear in 2024

In the 2024 Famitsu New Year Greetings column, Yoko Taro shared that he’s working on a new Bakuken stage play. This will be the fourth stage play in the Bakuken -An Explosion of Swords- series. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

The new Bakuken stage play is subtitled Teikoku Gensou Heidan, and it roughly translates to “Imperial Illusion Army.” Yoko Taro confirmed that he is currently writing the script for the new Bakuken stage play, and said that it will appear sometime before the end of 2024. The first two Bakuken stage plays and the introduction to the third entry are available to watch for free with English subtitles in the Shiro-Kuro official YouTube channel.

Additionally, Yoko Taro shared in the Famitsu column that he has been missing a lot of deadlines throughout 2023. The developer and writer said that he is “surprised at the potential of the human race to be unconcerned about missing deadlines.”

The 2024 keyword for Yoko Taro is “Chiikawa,” in reference to the popular manga series. When asked about his recent interests, Taro said he wants the story of Chiikawa to become a bit more “mild,” as it makes his heart ache. He also jokingly stated that “humanity is not made to endure such stories.”

Yoko Taro discussed his struggles with deadlines in a conversation with himself that he shared on his social media. In it, the creator gives himself two voices that discuss his struggles with deadlines, as well as how to achieve a “better self,” while he waits for the emergency dentist's office to open on New Year's Day. The conversation is only available in Japanese.

Taro has ample experience working on stage plays. Notable examples include the YoRHa stage plays that act as prequels to NieR: Automata, one of which inspired the creation of the game.

One Piece Odyssey

Announced in 2022, One Piece Odyssey is a new spin on the beloved manga anime, opting for JRPG and pseudo-open world elements. I had the opportunity to try the game at a preview event, which gave me more than a few hours to sink my teeth into the game. While nothing about it felt revolutionary during that handful of hours, what I played made me interested in the full release. It could potentially lay the foundation for other One Piece RPGs moving forward.

The game features an entirely new story set in the One Piece universe by series creator Eiichiro Oda. Luffy and crew get transported to a mysterious new island through an interdimensional portal, which promptly sees them stranded in this strange new place. I quickly acquired the crew I would be using throughout the preview, which was a fairly large amount of characters. This consisted of Luffy, Nami, Zoro, Usopp, Chopper, Nico Robin, and Sanji, though Franky also ed my party for a brief period of time. The preview was full of exposition, setting the stage for narrative events that would unfold within just an hour of gameplay.

One Piece Odyssey

This included an introduction to characters unique to One Piece Odyssey, like Lim, that wouldn’t be out of place in the manga. However, outside of this introduction, the preview didn’t allow me to get to know them in any greater capacity. Their story importance was paramount, as one such character serves as a deus ex machina of sorts that relieves Luffy and crew of their powers, so to speak. After the crew loses most of their abilities, I was introduced to the various systems that revolve around mysterious cubes that I would need to collect in order to regain my power. This included allocation of cubes to power up skills. (These could be refunded at any time, so it let me experiment and play around with certain builds.) It also afforded a peek at a Tetris-like accessory system. Everything is distributed and based around cubes, which includes equipment that you can arrange in a set square area to equip as many as possible.

Combat is turn-based, but character types are important when tackling enemies. One Piece Odyssey functions on a color-based system that designates what “type” each character is. For example, Zoro is a “Green” character, which gives him an advantage over “Red” types. Nami and Usopp are “Orange” type characters, making them formidable against “Greens.” It’s a rock-paper-scissors kind of ordeal, or something you’d see in something like Fate/Grand Order. But where it differentiates itself is the ability to swap between party on the fly to reposition your characters or move them up in turns to take advantage of their inherent type advantages.

For example, when attacking a “Red” type enemy that would initially be delegated to Luffy (who is also a “Red” type). You can go into your menu and swap him out for Zoro or Nico Robin to deal more damage or to kill the enemy outright, since your characters are fairly strong. Making use of these type advantages made most battles trivial during the preview. That said, this level of strategic play did come in handy during longer encounters, during which I was swapping characters out and repositioning them to make the most out of their location on the battlefield to avoid damage or soak it up depending on their type.

For my preview I played on the PlayStation 5. The game looked great, with cel shading making it feel all the more immersive with regard to the environments and monsters. One Piece characters still have their grossly over-exaggerated expressions in cutscenes, which helped carry over the tone of the manga into this game. Even when characters were executing flashier attacks or if I was in areas with a large amount of NPCs, the game didn’t seem to buckle under the weight of it all. I was able to explore the shores of the beach the crew washed up on and the desert city of Alabasta. Both looked great.

From what I experienced of One Piece Odyssey, it could prove to be an interesting RPG and an enticing new adventure for long-time fans of the series. Despite its fairly simple combat system, due to its use of positioning and character types, it could potentially allow for some interesting strategic play. That said, One Piece Odyssey feels like it could be the start of a slew of other RPGs of a similar vein for the series.

One Piece Odyssey will come to the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC on January 13, 2023.

one piece odyssey water 7

Bandai Namco confirmed that the Water 7 Arc of One Piece will appear as a memory the Straw Hat Pirates will re-live in One Piece Odyssey. As of the time of writing, there is no trailer or specific information on how the arc will play out. However, since there was a trailer showing off gameplay and cutscenes for Alabasta, there may be a Water 7 trailer soon. [Thanks, ryokutya2089!]

In One Piece Odyssey, the Straw Hat Pirates will have to go through past events. However, because they are stronger and already know what will happen, the game’s version will be new for existing fans of the show and manga. For example, even though Robin was not part of the crew during the actual Alabasta arc, she is their ally in the game’s version of it.

Water 7 was the fifteenth story arc of the series. This is when Franky ed the crew as the shipwright. Due to reasons revolving around Robin, Water 7 flows directly into the Enies Lobby arc. It is unclear at this point whether or not the game will cover events from Enies Lobby, or if it will be specifically focused around Water 7.

One Piece Odyssey is in development and will come out on January 13, 2023 for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC. If you purchase the limited edition, you can get a figure of Luffy and Lim.

One Piece Odyssey Dev Diary Goes Over Its Concepts and Gameplay

Bandai Namco shared a One Piece Odyssey Dev Diary starring Producer Katsuaki Tsuzuki. This time, the focus is to go over its development. He mentioned things like how its “let’s travel to the heart of memories” messaging is critical to the game and the concept. All of this goes on while new One Piece Odyssey gameplay footage appears.

Things begin with Tsuzuki discussing the initial reception to the announcement. After that, he mentioned that development began five years ago when One Piece Warriors 4 was being promoted. Once the framework was set, Eiichiro Oda was asked to contribute character designs. Oda’s message noted he’d consulted and provided art for it about three years ago. Tsuzuki also noted scenario production began during the manga’s Whole Cake Island arc.

Here’s the full One Piece Odyssey Dev Diary. It begins with an introduction, before moving onto character design, the development approach, and its features. At the 5:40 mark, details about the RPG gameplay elements in One Piece Odyssey show up.

In case someone missed it, the last update went over one of the original characters. People will meet Lim in the game.

One Piece Odyssey will come to the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in 2022.

Get Shaymin in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl Today

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl players can soon catch Shaymin. During the February 2022 Pokemon Presents, details about a new Mystery Gift came up. Starting on February 27, 2022, people can claim one Oak's Letter. Once they get it, they can use it to meet and catch Shaymin. However, the item can only be claimed until March 27, 2022.

The presentation showed how the event will go in-game. In the original Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, heading to Route 224 with one would trigger a meeting with Professor Oak. The player then gets to access a new, flowery area. That is where Shaymin shows up. It is then possible to battle and catch the grass-type Pokemon in its Land Forme. As is common with event Pokemon, you only get one chance to encounter and catch Shaymin.

If you fast forward to the seven minute mark, you can see how Shaymin looks in-game.

The announcement didn't offer any details about Shaymin's Sky Forme. That debuted in Pokemon Platinum. People who visited Floaroma with the character in their party could get a Gracidea. Using it changes the Pokemon to a grass and flying type.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are available for the Nintendo Switch, and Oak's Letter will bring Shaymin to both games on February 27, 2022.

pokemon shining pearl brilliant diamond review

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl revisit the fourth generation of the franchise. Hey, this pair of Nintendo DS games? Yep, next in line for remakes! So they’re not exactly surprising. But the quandary here is these games’ intended audience. Are they for you? The answer boils down to a few factors, and we’re here to guide you in the right direction!

pokemon shining pearl brilliant diamond review

I want a challenging RPG. 23533m

Expecting a challenge from a Pokemon game has long been a mistake! That’s not new. “Core” RPG fans often look down on the franchise with disdain, as the pacing and intensity just isn’t there. But somehow? These games make it worse.

This comes about through the intersection of two of BDSP’s design decisions. The first: the shot-for-shot remake nature of the games. It tries very hard to be that old experience in as many ways as possible! Sometimes at the expense of modernity, and sometimes to the frustration of fans seeking either new upgrades or the additions of pseudo-sequel Platinum. Developer ILCA, either from a hesitance to make bad changes or an iron fist of Pokemon Company oversight, didn’t take any risks, and you can feel the stifling air of that safety.

But then? These elements collide with Experience Share. Originally an equippable, targeted item, modern EXP Share doles out lots of growth to the whole party with no exceptions. But the game’s combat encounters and difficulty curve aren’t balanced for this! The result is a game that’s mind-numbingly easy.

We actively avoided optional encounters whenever possible and still managed to overlevel within the first two hours and never look back. (As usual, though, there's a bit more challenge in the postgame when you get there.)

If NO, Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl might be for you.

exp share is going to level up your team really quite too fast

I haven’t played Pokemon, and I want to try. 6t62g

With the newbie-crafted Let’s Go games and the new-generation Sword and Shield in the recent past, you may not be looking for the nostalgic remake to be a comfortable entry point. And yet? Yeah, it very well could be.

Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl happily hold your hand. This all is fairly aggravating to veteran players who have been through all of this a dozen times before. But for the first time? Hey, that’s useful! Combined with that low difficulty and the simple aesthetic presentation, it may be the sort of entry to welcome family and friends to the franchise who picked up a Switch for Animal Crossing or Ring Fit Adventure.

It also sands down some of the game's rough edges. It retains the HM system for getting around, but you can activate any of them after they're unlocked without having a party member learn them. (Thanks, random wild Bidoof!) That EXP Share change means there's very little stress. BDSP even implements that modern move effectiveness display once you know a foe's types. It's welcoming, sometimes at the expense of feeling like bumper bowling.

If YES, Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl might be for you.

pokemon shining pearl brilliant diamond review

I want to catch ‘em all. i2f4p

There’s a sizeable segment of the Pokemon community that’s driven to find and collect all the new creatures. You know the type: the ones for whom Pokemon Home is a vital utility. If that’s you? You know, there may not be much for you here.

These games are pure remakes and don’t introduce any new species or forms. Early Pokemon facelifts covered pre-GBA generations that couldn’t connect to later ones for transfer. Later ones didn’t have that utility, but they were still regularly more convenient or with some handy extra features. The original DS games might require you to jump through a couple of hoops, but their feature sets aren’t ancient.

So BDSP only gives you access to more catch opportunities if you’re a Switch-only Pokemon player. And while, sure, Sword and Shield don’t have everything, the Expansion made so many more species accessible. (And provided a super-easy way to get Legendaries and Mythics.)

So if you actually want to collect new stuff, you’ll need to sit tight and wait for Arceus.

If NO, Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl might be for you.

grand underground fossil

I want to revisit my nostalgia for Diamond and Pearl. 274219

This might be the best selling point here. Is it the story? The contests? The underground? Or the iconic creatures that defined your childhood? Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are most successful with those primed to love it.

Why? Well if you aren't here for the contests and ribbons and stickers and such, it can feel vanilla and barebones. Diamond and Pearl's distinct qualities are optional, and that puts it in its own territory in the franchise. Other entries? Megas. Z-Power. Dynamax. Whether you like it or not, you experience these new things as you play. In these games, you could its special elements by, and many do if it's not their sort of thing. But that does make a bland-at-times game even more milquetoast.

These special things are also about loving your creatures. That means that having a real attachment to pals like Shinx, Bidoof or Gible helps you enjoy the game in a very material way. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl retain the original games' Pokedex, so anything newer won't pop up. And that's ideal for recreating that old experience.

The backlash to the games’ visual style? Yeah, you’d have to overcome that. The overlaid visual effects do a decent enough job of holding the look together, but it still feels disted at times. Not helping matters is the shift between chibi and normal styles in the overworld and battle. We think it’d be easier to get used to it if it were more consistent.

If YES, Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl might be for you.

pokemon shining pearl brilliant diamond review

Without fondness for the original games, you might find Shining Pearl and Brilliant Diamond less than compelling. With it, though? You'll be fine as long as your expectations are in check. They're faithful remakes! And while ILCA's stodgy, conservative approach won't wow anyone, it gets the job done.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl are available now worldwide on Nintendo Switch. Game Freak's own new title, Pokemon Legends: Arceus, will launch January 28, 2022.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl Ramanas Park Available After Patch

There’s an additional feature available in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl called Ramanas Park. After someone beats the Elite Four and enters the Hall of Fame, they can access the area. However, people getting a physical, rather than digital, copy will need to the 1.1.0 update to access Ramanas Park and other online features like Grand Underground and Mystery Gift.

Editor’s Note: The following paragraph and video will contain endgame spoilers for Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl showing off Ramanas Park. 2m2x67

The Ramanas Park area in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl will give people a place to go to catch Legendaries. If you find slates in Sinnoh, you can use them to trigger encounters. Only certain characters appear in certain games. For example, the announcement confirmed Pokemon Red, Blue, Green and Yellow’s Legendary bird trio of Arcticuno, Zapdos, and Moltres will only be in Pokemon Shining Pearl. Meanwhile, the three Legendary beasts Raikou, Entei, and Suicune from Gold, Silver and Crystal only appear in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond. Ho-oh is in Diamond, while Lugia is in Peral.

Here’s the Ramanas Park video.

In addition, there are certain Mythical Pokemon you get for having other games. If you have save data from Pokemon Sword or Shield, you get Jirachi in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. If you have Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Eevee!, you get Mew.
