There are times when I sometimes feel like DOOM: The Dark Ages might be one of the more accessible and inviting installments, yet at the same time could be too focused on prior releases' reveals and details. The gameplay is tight and encourages diverse strategies that use every item in your arsenal and the Chapters’ locations are expansive and littered with secrets, which might make it inviting enough even if you don’t know the whole backstory ahead of experiencing the newest game. While I do think I had a bit of a better time with DOOM Eternal, this is still a delight.

I missed the 2016 DOOM installment and, while DOOM: The Dark Ages is a prequel, it heavily relies upon knowledge of DOOM and DOOM Eternal. After all, it begins on Argent D’Nur with the Night Sentinels requesting Bishop Kreed Maykr dispatch the Doom Slayer to Khalim to face the forces of Hells attacking. Hell’s Prince Ahzrak. However, it’s clear the Doom Slayer is under Maykr control, with a rather notable piece of technology on his chest pointing to a degree of control, and we learn about this new threat, the fate of an organization, and the familiar figure’s beginnings along the way. A very brief four sentences set the stage before we’re plunged into protecting Khalim, and I felt id Software often assumed I’d be familiar with characters and situations.

To start, the execution and implementation of DOOM: The Dark Ages is downright perfect. It welcomes players from both ends of the spectrum. There are six difficulty levels, as well as some settings in options that can be adjust. So Aspiring Slayer feels like a somewhat easy experience that lets someone newer to the series or perhaps with less experience with the genre still cut through enemies, learn the mechanics, and feel powerful thanks to damage modifiers, parry windows, less aggressive enemies, and things like aim assist. Meanwhile, Ultra-Nightmare difficulty is available from the very outset and essentially punishes you for any lapse in awareness or mistake. Enemies are savage, know exactly where you are, and hunt you down, you don’t get any saves, you need to find Life Sigils to recover, the parry window is shorter, and if you die the campaign is completely over. You can also swap to different ones at any time as you play, in case you need more (or less) of a challenge. Couple this with tutorials that are well implemented as new weapons and mechanics are introduced and Chapters set up so enemies susceptible to them appear for you to gain experience.

While 2016’s DOOM and DOOM Eternal seemed a little faster pace, I found I benefitted more by leaning into the Doom Slayer’s more thoughtful and methodical movements in DOOM: The Dark Ages. This isn’t to say that you can’t move fast. I adored a strike carried out with the shield that lets you lock onto an enemy and essentially dash and smash into them to deal massive damage and perhaps even collateral damage to entities around it. Once you’ve set up an enemy for a finishing blow, you can tap a button to zip in and smash. Also, depending on the difficulty and your abilities, you could probably rush in if you want! But there ended up being so many moments when taking my time, analyzing the situation, and responding before immediately reacting and rushing in worked toward my benefit. Letting enemies come to me meant I could use melee hits, including the finisher that would force it to drop all types of necessary ammo. Parrying some ranged blasts could send them back, dealing more damage in a single counter than I could by wasting a few bullets or direct hits.

Another thing id Software nailed with DOOM: The Dark Ages involved making each type of weapon feel different and important. It is to your benefit to not rely on one type of attack, since swapping between them often is the best approach for not only dealing with hordes, but even with certain heavier types of foes. In some cases, you’ll need to use a standard gun, such as a Shotgun or Shredder, to superheat a shield and use a Shield Saw to destroy the enemy. Or when there’s a larger foe that can take more hits surrounded by Zombies and Soldiers, using a Shield Saw to stun them, swapping to the Accelerator for a faster rate of fire, then jumping in with a melee Power Gauntlet strike to ensure it drops ammo you need. And since bringing up the weapon wheel to swap guns is also easy, it could be just as handy to use an Accelerator to get rid of enemies with Energy Shields, then swap to something like Pulverizer to take out larger groups. The recoil feels good on the PS5, the is fine, and the speakers in the controller chime in with sounds taken from the assault. And the execution means every attack feels different, so there’s a faster pace with the Flail than the Power Gauntlet, and you could feel the weight of the Mace. The only complaint I have is that, unless I did feel like I needed ammo, I sometimes was so satisfied with the guns and Shield Saw that I didn't resort to melee. Melee does work well and can be another effective option in the arsenal, but the shooting is so punchy and shield so useful that it sometimes can't compare.

In addition to those typical means of assaulting foes, DOOM: The Dark Ages includes the ability to fight off foes in an Atlan mech or ride a Mecha Dragon. While I liked the concept behind both, especially the dragon, I feared they’d be a bit of a gimmick ahead of launch that wouldn’t mesh with what we expect from a DOOM game. Now that I’ve played, I still think the concept behind the Mecha Dragon is incredibly cool and I get why they would feel important for a sense of progress and scale, but these segments didn’t really click with me. It is fine and doesn’t ruin the experience since they aren’t a major focus in stages, but I recommend tempering your expectations for them and not expecting too much. I feel like the more diverse gameplay in Chapters spoiled me a bit. I got so used to setting the pace and choosing between varied types of assaults. So while these are totally serviceable, especially since they are rather infrequent, I didn’t find them as much fun.

What I will say is I appreciated the spectacle of them, as well as the settings for all the chapters. I love the mash-up between medieval armor, weaponry, and elements alongside the advanced relics, technology, and guns. They go together so well, I found myself sometimes finding the many types of collectibles scattered throughout Chapters because I’d occasionally take in my surroundings and explore set pieces once I’d eliminated demons. It’s especially impressive when in outdoor settings and seeing titanic demons facing off against one another. They’re massive, and again I’d stop and watch their reign of terror or fights against equally gargantuan foes or dragons. Also, as you’d expect, the soundtrack is great and filled with metal that amps up at appropriate moments.

Another perk to it is the layout and size of each Chapter makes replaying an attractive prospect. There are multiple types of collectibles, such as Codex Entries or Skins, that can be hidden away. Spaces can have multiple layers to them, inviting you to drop down into spots or explore to see if you can reach certain spots. A map can be checked, in case you’re looking for assistance or trying to suss out a secret. I also found the level design meant there would be a natural flow even if I did venture off the beaten path, which I appreciated. It’s very well thought out.

DOOM: The Dark Ages feels packed with situations that test a player and challenge them to use every element in their arsenal. Not to mention, it’s also quite accessible and filled with collectibles that make it worth replaying Chapters in its story. However, I do feel like it is geared toward people who played DOOM and DOOM Eternal, with a narrative that sometimes necessitates prior knowledge of the storyline since 2016. Also, the mecha dragon and Atlan mech sections don’t leave the sort of grand impression one might expect.

DOOM: The Dark Ages will come to the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC on May 15, 2025.

doom dark ages

DOOM: The Dark Ages was revealed at the Xbox Games Showcase for summer 2024. The latest game in the Doom franchise will be released in 2025.

DOOM: The Dark Ages is set in a medieval world. The trailer features more of the gameplay featured in the most recent DOOM games, with Doomguy now wielding a shield along with his usual arsenal. Also he is shown riding a dragon. It's likely the setting is a reference to Doomguy's backstory as detailed in DOOM Eternal. This is ed by the trailer opening on the words "before he became a hero".

The game is the newest game in the Doom franchise since 2020's Doom Eternal. It will be the first DOOM game released under Microsoft since the company purchased Bethesda in the same year.

DOOM: The Dark Ages will release sometime in 2025. It's coming to Xbox Series X/S, PC and PS5.

doom eternal switch

The time has come. Long have Nintendo Switch owners waited for a new DOOM to grace their systems, with teases suggesting it was on the way. Now, we have a DOOM Eternal Switch release date, and it is sooner than people might expect. People can a copy on December 8, 2020.

As a reminder, ing will be the only way to get DOOM Eternal on the Switch. After a bit of a scare, where people received messages saying pre-orders were canceled at GameStop, Bethesda confirmed that there would be no physical release for the FPS. You can only turn to the eShop for it.

But on the plus side, the Switch version’s release date trailer is here. People can get an idea of how the game looks on the system.

That's not the only recent DOOM Eternal news. The DOOM Slayer is coming... in Nendoroid form. That won't be out until June 2021, but people can place a pre-order for the character, which comes with a teeny Cacodemon, until January 2021.

The DOOM Eternal Nintendo Switch version will show up in the eShop on December 8, 2020. It is immediately available on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions are on the way.

doom eternal switch physical digital

There’s some, well, doom and gloom news for the DOOM Eternal Switch release. People will only have one option when getting a copy. Instead of being available both digitally and physically, like the 2016 reboot that showed up on the system in 2017, it will be an eShop exclusive. There will be no physical release. [Thanks, IGN!]

IGN learned about the shift directly from Bethesda, following concerns raised by people after GameStop allegedly heard about the cancellation and was ing customers. It was then that people turned to the Bethesda Twitter for answers. Initially, on November 19, 2020, the company said there were no announcements and people should watch “official Twitter channels” and its site for news. It was only later that Bethesda told IGN there would be no DOOM Eternal Switch physical copies.

Here is the full statement Bethesda provided:

While DOOM Eternal is 100% on track for an imminent digital-only release on Nintendo Switch, the absence of a physical release at retail resulted in cancelled pre-orders

Affected customers will receive full refunds and should their preferred retailer for more information.

DOOM Eternal is immediately available on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia. The Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X versions are still on the way, though you’ll only see digital DOOM Eternal Switch copies via the eShop.

doom eternal easter egg korone doom 2016 b

There’s a DOOM Eternal Easter egg referencing a Hololive Vtuber and her DOOM (2016) run. People who have the Ancient Gods add-on can now trigger a reference to Inugami Korone. In particular, it is calling out the Korone DOOG 2016 run she did earlier in 2020. [Thanks, Every-Mercy-Main on Reddit and Joefu on Twitter!]

Here’s how it works. If someone presses the X button three times, the chainsaw button, a Korone DOOG Eternal reference pops up. Here’s a video from Joefu on Twitter showing it in the Xbox One version of DOOM Eternal.

The logo itself references the Korone DOOG stream of the DOOM reboot. For almost eleven hours, she played the game. (You can see it in a playlist on her YouTube channel.) Before that, she did a stream of the DOOM 64 Switch port. Though recently, she’s been playing Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, Cadence of Hyrule, and Super Mario Bros. The most recent Super Mario Bros. streams are English-only ones.

DOOM Eternal is available for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, with the Ancient Gods DLC available now.

doom eternal xbox game

The DOOM Slayer is conquering a new front. Microsoft announced the DOOM Eternal Xbox Game debut date. People who have an Xbox One will find it in the library starting on October 1, 2020. But eventually this year, the PC version of the service will also offer the game in its collection.

This comes immediately after one of September 2020’s biggest announcements. Microsoft acquired Bethesda from Zenimax. This means it owns all of those studios and their properties. This includes id Software and DOOM Eternal, obviously. When that was revealed, Microsoft noted that Bethesda titles would be day-one Xbox Game releases and games from the company would appear on the service. The DOOM Eternal Xbox Game debut is likely a part of that.

We kind of had an idea this was on the way. The official Xbox Game Twitter shared an internal email from “Melissa McGame” hinting at it.

This also means people will get to experience some of DOOM Eternal’s big updates. For example, in May 2020 the game ended up getting some empowered demons. New render modes, like one that is Game Boy-inspired, launched in August 2020.

DOOM Eternal is available on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia. Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X versions are on the way. The DOOM Eternal Xbox Game debut will be October 1, 2020 on the Xbox One and in 2020 for PCs.

doom eternal render modes game boy

So one thing that DOOM Eternal has, and has offered for a bit, are different Render Modes. When the second update was released in June 2020, Black & White, Cinematic, Classic, and Gritty options were offered. Now, Bethesda’s offered a reminder that there are even more new DOOM Eternal Render Modes available, and one of them is inspired by Nintendo’s Game Boy.

Since seeing is critical to understanding how these sorts of things work and getting the best idea of their nature, Bethesda released a new trailer showing off all of the Render Modes you could use in action. This means even if you missed one shared before, you can definitely check them out now.

Here’s Bethesda’s latest DOOM Eternal video.

And here’s a list of timestamps and links showing when you can catch each of the DOOM Eternal Render Modes shared in it.

DOOM Eternal is immediately available on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia, and past updates added Empowered Demons. It will also appear on the Nintendo Switch. Free PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X upgrades are also planned for the shooter.

doom eternal update 1

Update: It's worth mentioning that for PC s, this update also installs Denuvo Anti-Cheat, which is now required for DOOM Eternal multiplayer. This is controversial software due to its kernal-mode driver, and the patch notes (linked below) do include information on the software and instructions for uninstalling it upfront.

The first major update for DOOM Eternal has been released, which is affectionately titled "DOOM Eternal Update 1." Fancy update titling aside, Bethesda and id Software's massive shooter sequel got a lot of new content ranging from new features, to bug fixes (and an updated known issues log, natch). Adjustments have been made on a per platform basis, meaning that some adjustments have been made to just the PC version and some for just consoles. Among the update's super long patch notes list is a bundle of new features, including some online disruption to the single-player campaign.

The first big feature addition is Empowered Demons. This is something you can toggle, but basically it's an extra challenge that connects players together. If you die, the demon that killed you gets powered up and sent down the internet tubes to another player. If the other player beats it, they're get a buttload of ammo and and XP for events.

Speaking of XP, the next new feature is Echelon leveling. It's basically a prestige system, that resets your DOOM level to one once you hit 250, and adds an extra visual to your ranking. And while you're playing online to get those Echelon levels, you can also now add friends to a separate favorites list.

Among the updates that aren't new features, various quality of life changes have been implemented, with a notable emphasis on how the DOOM Slayer is affected by water. A lot of balance changes have come to the online mode as well, including an adjustment to the Marauder for both PC and Consoles.

DOOM Eternal is currently available for the PC, the PlayStation 4, and the Xbox One. It's coming to the Nintendo Switch eventually, but doesn't have a release date or window at this time.

doom eternal playtest featured

Both recent DOOM games, the 2016 soft reboot and 2020’s DOOM Eternal, open with allusions to the phrase “rip and tear” with biblical cadence. The DOOM Slayer is a godlike entity, a being who disrupts the political balance of Heaven versus Hell, and a human vessel of inhuman power. His mission, calling, and truth is ripping and tearing, he feels it in his bones and hears it in his essence. Doomguy lives in the Fortress of DOOM, a structure of godliness and DOOM-liness that floats above the Earth like an alien watchtower.

Oh, and by the way, here’s where “rip and tear” comes from:

doom eternal lore doom lore

Behold, the terrifying power of internet memes. The absolutely bonkers Knee Deep in the Dead comic book adaptation resurfaced online back in the YTMND days, flourished as meme culture grew, then somehow wrapped back around to the source material. Except it did so in extravagant fashion, with so many layers of meta it probably warrants its own TV Tropes page if it doesn’t have one already. In DOOM (2016), the phrase appearing was novel, the opening riff of a crunchy, heavy metal ballad that was one part masturbatory, one part satire, one part earnest adoration of what was before. It was an early sign of what the DOOM reboot was, is, and will always be. But then a sequel had to happen, and the direction it took hasn’t sat well with everyone, myself included. Most people loved it anyway, and I get why, to be fair.

doom eternal playtest 2

DOOM made fun of itself as much as it strove to be something earnest and special. On one hand, you had a shooter that was aggressively old school, but at the same time found a way to push that formula forward. Aggression was the meat, and everything else was seasoned with a biting wit that was hardly ever spoken. Instead, the DOOM Slayer ripped and tore his way through everything, including exposition and contemporary gaming tropes, and scoffed at lore as a concept. At the same time, it had its fun in the codex, where everything was given a corny, overwritten description dripping with love and irony.

With DOOM Eternal, the codex page becomes the focus, as we’re thrust into not only a DOOM II-like Hell on Earth scenario, but also a heaping helping of DOOM lore that abuses trope after trope with a surprising recklessness. DOOM Eternal does appear to be set directly after the events of the previous game, but pulls so much lore jargon, political factions, and demonic social structures out of seemingly nowhere that it’s disorienting. Perhaps some of it lived in 2016’s codex, but if you followed the creed of the DOOM Slayer himself, you’d be completely lost upon booting up Eternal. Where did the Sentinels come from? Are they angels? Where’s the doctor from the first game? How the hell did Doomguy get a Fortress of Solitude rip-off?

doom eternal playtest 3

The worst part, is that DOOM Eternal wants to answer all of these questions, and turns Doomguy into a willing participant in the lore dumps in order to do so. No longer a pair of massive, gloved hands tearing through any obstacle, Doomguy becomes a man with a face and body, a man who speaks, a man who is willing to patiently sit through and participate in expository cutscenes. Then, the game’s video game part just pushes you into large monster closets, which are ittedly a lot of fun now that the DOOM Slayer can like, double-jump and air dash like he’s a big fan of Guilty Gear or something. Jumping from boring cutscene to arduous enemy rooms sounds jarring, but luckily id tossed lengthy jumping puzzles in there too, just in case you were having too much fun.

I loved DOOM, and I wanted to love DOOM Eternal, but I just don’t. It’s a shame too, because if there was ever a video game to ironically embody the phrase “poetry in motion” by way of violent body horror, DOOM Eternal is that. But it completely 180s from the smart, cutthroat vibe of the last game and sails right into all the stuff that game poked fun at, with what feels like a Diablo-like sincerity. It isn’t a well-told story either, relying on all the usual Important Noun mythology sci-fi leans on too much and attaching unnecessary backstory to things that never needed it. DOOM Eternal perfectly adapts the life cycle of a meme: from insular gag in the internet subcultures, to self-referential product, to retail-driven homogeny. Rip and tear isn’t funny if it’s supposed to be cool.

doom eternal playtest 1

DOOM Eternal is available now for the PlayStation 4, the Xbox One, and the PC. It will launch for the Nintendo Switch on a later, unannounced date.

GameStop has broken up one of 2020’s major couples. Doom Slayer and Isabelle no longer share a release date, as the retailer has decided to start selling DOOM Eternal early. People can get physical copies on March 19, 2020.

GameStop announced the move late last night on March 18, 2020. To help prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, the store decided to begin selling DOOM Eternal on March 19, 2020 in an attempt to have fewer people in stores at once. Previously, there might have been concerns about potential crowds who might have come in on March 20, 2020 for both this game and Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Here’s the announcement tweet.

Bethesda has also updated the Steam page for the game to answer some questions about PC copies. Some important notes are that people can immediately link their Slayer Club to the game, Empowered Demons aren’t immediately available as an option, and Photo Mode is in beta on PCs.

DOOM Eternal will be released on March 20, 2020 on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, though people can get physical copies at GameStops on March 19, 2020. There is also a special Twitch Prime skin available for the game.

The DOOM Eternal DOOM Slayer has got the look. When people hop into the latest entry in the series, they’ll have the opportunity to make the avatar their own. As people go through the shooter, they can acquire skins for the character to wear, podiums, and different animations they can perform. While a new trailer doesn’t really show how the new animations and podiums will look, it does swiftly cycle through some skin options folks will have in the full game.

There is one potential downside to the DOOM Eternal DOOM Slayer customization. The DOOMicorn, one of the more striking armor options in the trailer looking at different designs, is a Twitch Prime exclusive. This means requires people to both subscribe and have your Bethesda and Twitch s connected. It can only be claimed for a limited time, though Bethesda didn't mention when this exclusive drop will become extinct.

Here’s a look at all of the DOOM Eternal DOOM Slayer designs, including the exclusive DOOMicorn ensemble.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOUFABTB28w

What this customization trailer doesn’t show is the ability to customize demons. If someone decides to head into a BATTLEMODE match, they will have the option of altering the look of either their DOOM Slayer or demon.

DOOM Eternal will come to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia on March 20, 2020. The Nintendo Switch version will arrive later in 2020. People who preorder will also get DOOM 64 and a Rip and Tear customization pack.

Void Engine Trademark Suggests iD Software Has A New Engine 1e4p4l https://siliconera.voiranime.info/void-engine/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=void-engine https://siliconera.voiranime.info/void-engine/#respond <![CDATA[Ishaan Sahdev]]> Fri, 15 Nov 2013 22:31:38 +0000 <![CDATA[iD Software]]> <![CDATA[Trademarks]]> <![CDATA[USA]]> <![CDATA[Void Engine]]> https://siliconera.voiranime.info/?p=350286 <![CDATA[

Zenimax Media Inc., owners of id Software, have filed a trademark for something called the “Void Engine powered by id Tech,” Siliconera has discovered. The trademark was filed on November 8th, 2013.

What is the Void Engine? We aren’t certain as to its current status, but we do have a little background on it, going back over a decade. Back in the early 2000s, a pair of programmers, Gaz Iqbal and John Schreiner, were working on a 3D FPS engine called Void, which they described as being notable for its “modular and clear coding style”.

The engine ed OpenGL and DirectX, utilized a Quake 3-style shader system, and was capable of implementing “common Quake 3 shader commands”. Void was also compatible with the .BSP level format that id Software’s Quake engine used.

At some point, the two programmers reached the decision to cease working on Void as an engine, and instead, develop a game using the technology. What happened next is anyone’s guess, as the pair stopped updating the engine’s website, and the game they were going to develop never surfaced. Siliconera ed the programmers, but have not heard back from them yet.

Just what id Software intends to use Void for is unknown.

Part of my journey to GDC was done on a Virgin America jet and like all flights there is a period of boredom while waiting for the “please turn off electronic devices” light to dim. Usually, I read the plane’s magazine or start a crossword puzzle. Virgin America had an entertainment system to keep me busy during the downtime. Flipping through the menus I found classic Doom. Yes, Doom from iD Software.

I grabbed the controller from the armrest and sunk into some retro FPS action under the glow of purple cabin lights. Sort of. Doom was a little sluggish and I think it was stuck on one of the easier difficulty levels. The D-pad moved the space marine around, the shoulder buttons were for strafing and one of the colored face buttons fired his pistol. Since I couldn’t save I didn’t get very far, but seeing Doom in a plane entertainment console was a neat find. Now if only they had seat to seat multiplayer…

Browsing though the entire selection of games it looks like Virgin’s system is running some form of Linux. I can’t confirm this, but having Circus Linux as one of their titles suggests it’s a possibility. Other installed games include Penguin Command, Primate Plunge, X-Mahjongg and Gem Drop X. All of these have Linux ports. While in seat games are (mostly) unnecessary for core gamers carrying a handheld, the casual crowd who enjoys Bejeweled are a perfect audience for Virgin’s Entertainment system and perhaps a first taste of gaming on Linux.

Fans are still keeping Wolfenstein 3D alive years after it single handedly created the FPS genre. Fellow Siliconera writer, Gnome, posted over on his site a link to a couple of fan developed mods for the game. Most of them are the standard enemy swaps with new layouts and a tweaked weapon except for medEvil, which changes Wolf 3D into a first person fantasy game. Sure there are magical weapons that shoot glowing orbs like Hexen, but you’ve got a sword for up close combat. It’s sort of like Deep Labyrinth, minus the leveling up and random dungeons. Kudos to the developers for teaching an old wolf new tricks and their project sits alongside Super Noah’s Ark 3D as one of the most creative ways transformations of Wolfenstein 3D.
