Idea Factory International announced three Neptunia Re;Birth games and Death end re;Quest: Code Z won’t come to the Nintendo Switch in North America or Europe as originally planned, as all four titles are now canceled. It cited Nintendo Guidelines as being the issue for the games not appearing on the system as planned. All of the games appeared on the system in Japan in 2024.

Idea Factory International did not cite which elements of the Nintendo Guidelines the games Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 1Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 2 Sisters GenerationHyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth3 V Generation, and Death end re;Quest: Code Z violate. The first and second Death end re;Quest games appear worldwide on the Switch eShop and are still available to purchase. We also saw multiple other Neptunia games appear on the system in 2024. Neptunia Game Maker R:Evolution and Neptunia: Sisters VS Sisters both appeared there. There is an age-gate on the website for the new Death end re;Quest game.

This does perhaps explain a delay from earlier this year. All three Switch Neptunia Re;Birth games were supposed to debut in Europe on May 21, 2024. The day before launch, Idea Factory International said it wouldn’t happen. There was no explanation at the time.

It seems one Neptunia game isn’t hit by this. The official site for Neptunia Riders vs Dogoos still lists that as heading to the Switch worldwide. That debuts on January 28, 2025.

Death end re;Quest: Code Z will still come to the PS4 and PS5 in North America and Europe in 2025.

Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth Switch eShop Release Delayed

Idea Factory International announced that Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 1, 2, and 3 won’t appeared on the Switch eShop in North America and Europe on May 21, 2024. The company also didn’t explain why the titles are delayed or when we might expect to see them appear on the system.

Here is the full, short, official statement from Idea Factory International regarding the Switch versions of Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 1, 2, and 3. It originally announced the three games would come to the system back on April 26, 2024. No physical versions were confirmed.

As previously announced, the Neptunia Re;Birth series was set to release digitally on the Nintendo eShop on May 21. We regrettably announce that the digital release for Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 1Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 2 Sisters Generation, and Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth3 V Generation is postponed until further notice. Further details will be provided at a later date.

Idea Factory and Compile Heart haven’t made any similar delay announcements regarding the Japanese release of the games yet. Back in February 2024, the developer confirmed that all three of the original titles would appear on the system.

The three games are available on other platforms right now. For example, one of the easiest ways to acquire and play them is to grab them from Steam. All three of the titles are available there. Each one is the updated release of one of the original three entries in the series.

There’s no updated release date yet for Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 1Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 2 Sisters Generation, and Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth3 V Generation for the Nintendo Switch worldwide. The three games are expected to appear on the system in Japan on May 23, 2024. The most recent entry in the series is the spin-off Neptunia Game Maker Re:Evolution, which is available for the PS4, PS5, and Switch.

Idea Factory has been working with Felistella, a developer that formed after Summon Night developer Flight Plan closed. Felistella developed the three Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth titles and even added their own character Felistella as a NPC who adventures in dungeons on her own. Before that Felistella developed Summon Night 5 for Bandai Namco Games and two PSP Summon Night ports.

The two companies will be working even closer together since Idea Factory acquired shares in the Gifu based developer. Idea Factory and Felistella  use their t know how to continue to develop RPGs for the consumer market. This includes new titles and new intellectual properties. Right now, they are recruiting new staff for Idea Factory's office in Tokyo and Felistella's office in Gifu.

Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 1 is a game of two parts. One of those parts is silly, lighthearted, and occasionally cringeworthy, and the other is a white-knuckle struggle fought on the edge of a blade. You're either watching your party of moefied game consoles and companies joking around and slowly progressing through a story, or you're in a dungeon fighting for your life. There's no real exploration to speak of, since your destinations are chosen from a top down map that'll either take you into a menu, a visual novel section, or a dungeon.

Neptunia's story is so focused on being silly that it uses Neptune, its knowingly-hapless protagonist, to defuse any situation that borders on serious with jokes or simple interruption. Whereas Disgaea breaks up its zaniness with heavy character moments and LucasArts adventure games stories through their twisted humor, Neptunia has no such aspirations. Yes, there's technically a an overarching story about an unending war between four goddesses who each represent various consoles that are being manipulated by the evil with Arfoire, but that's quickly brushed aside with a shot of amnesia.

Once Neptune loses her memory (about 4 minutes into the game), she's more interested in referencing videogames or eating pudding than ing that she's an all-powerful goddess.

There's a deliberate weightlessness to everything that happens in these segments. Characters representing various companies and franchises are introduced, say a couple of reverence heavy lines, mention being friends with Neptune in another timeline, and disappear with no impact upon the storyline. Even attempted murder is treated with all the nonchalance of a walk in the park. It's strangely refreshing to play a game that has no intention of taking itself seriously, but it's hard to care enough to sit through the mounds of text when your party are teasing one party about her perceived attraction to another instead of being impacted by the world-changing events taking place.

Unfortunately, the localization also feels a little bit like nobody cared. Considering how much dialogue the game contains, it can be frustratingly stilted and only further detracts from the story.  Some of the slang and game jokes are pretty well put together, but a lot of text feels like it was written by someone who had a sturdy grasp of English as their second language, but wasn't quite native-level. English voice actors do their cheery best to make up for it, but you can tell that some lines even give them pause. An extra editor could have done wonders.

When you first enter a "dungeon," you'd be forgiven for thinking that this part of the game was just as  laid back and happy as the rest. Most of the time, when you enter a new dungeon you'll end up in a bright forest or sunny field (even the caves and abandoned factories are pretty cheerful and well-lit in the game's pastel art style), and be pitted against everything from a Tetris block gone wrong to a two-color version of a Mario pipe, to a visual novel. Why do you have to fight these things? Because they're monsters. How did an unmoving-yet-sentient visual novel become an enemy? Who knows! The game looks like it's just being silly until you enter combat.

Neptunia's battle system is labyrinthine and insane. It's like they crammed a speedy SRPG into every random encounter. Spacing is everything. When it's one of your characters' turn, a ring will appear around them displaying their range of movement and a shape in front of them displaying the area their attack will cover. This area will be based on the character's weapon type, so you'll want to equip your toughest characters with as big a weapon as possible. Highlight as many enemies as you can with your attack area, and then attack to start a combo, which has you choose from your preset attacks with a series of button presses.

Combos are based on three types of attacks. Power Attacks (mapped to Square), Break Attacks (X), and Rapid Attacks (Triangle). Power attacks are pretty self explanatory, dealing as much raw HP damage as possible. Break attacks will eat away at the opponents guard gauge, which can be broken to deal bonus damage. Rapid attacks will build up the EXE Drive gauge, which, when raised high enough, will allow you to add highly-damaging finishing moves to your combo (for no cost, strangely) or can be spent to use an ungodly special attack.

Regular enemies are pretty simple to take care of, as long as you don't position your teammates in such a way that enemies can hit them simultaneously. If you keep your characters too close to each other, NPCs are capable of wiping you out in just a couple moves. There is no mercy in Neptunia. Death will send you right back to your last save point, without anything to show for it.

Bosses and the larger enemies that populate Neptunia's (often frustratingly reused) dungeons bring all of these aspects of combat to a head. You're constantly balancing your attacks between Breaks and Rapids to decrease the enemy's guard gauge while filling your EXE Drive meter, all the while keeping your healer just far enough away from the boss to keep her alive but close enough to your attackers to be useful. Maybe you've arranged your party the way you did because your assist characters decrease the amount of wait time between turns for your strongest attacker and decrease your healer's magic use for her heal spells. You know your enemy can drop any one of your characters in a single hit, so you've stocked up on revival items, just in case.

You don't want to see that game over screen and lose all you've worked for... and you really don't want to have to skip through that lengthy visual novel segment where everyone has trouble pronouncing "Neptune" again.

Food for Thought:

1. For a game that's so lighthearted and cheerful, the fact that the game's "event" scenes are only animated to the extent that they add jiggling breasts weirds me out.

2. The writers of the game really liked names that ended in "oire," There game has a Noire, an Yvoire, a Histoire, and an Arfoire...

Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1 is a remake of the first game in the Neptunia series. Instead of using the original battle system, the game uses Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory as a base. Idea Factory also completely changed the story to make it more comical and switched out characters like NISA for Neptunia V's cameo characters. In this interview, Siliconera spoke with Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1 director Shingo Onodera and Idea Factory International CEO Haru Akenaga about how Re;Birth1 changed.

It has only been a few years since the PS3 game why did Idea Factory remake Hyperdimension Neptunia? Why did you choose the battle system from Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory and why was the Scout System removed?

Shingo Onodera, Director at Idea Factory: The main reason for the change was that after Neptunia V, we heard from many fans that they would love to play the original Neptunia game using the battle system from Neptunia V. Also, we had a handful of staff at Idea Factory who wanted to use Neptunia V's battle system for Neptunia Re;Birth1. We're grateful that we have so many hardcore fans of the series, but we know that we weren't 100% satisfied with the original game's system and our own development skills at the time, since it was the first game in the series.

The staff who worked on the original Neptunia expressed their desire to revamp the first Neptunia using the skills and knowledge they had gained in creating the first three games in the series. With this strong ion, we decided to implement the latest battle system into the first game. The reason that the Scout System is not included in Neptunia Re;Birth is because we have a new Remake System which is somewhat similar.

Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1 has a new localization. Can you tell us about the team that localized the Vita game?

Haru Akenaga, CEO of Idea Factory International: Idea Factory International has an experienced translator and editor who are familiar with Japanese RPG titles, and they both enjoy Idea Factory titles as well. We kept the Neptunia terminologies consistent with the original games. The story in Re;Birth1 has been remastered in the Japanese version, so our localization team worked on the new story using familiar terminology in order to keep the world feeling the same.

How has the story changed from the PlayStation 3 game? One example is NISA had a major role in the PlayStation 3 game, but I don’t think the Heroine of Justice is in Re;birth1.

SO: The basic story is the same: Neptune loses her memory, and with the help and guidance of Histoire, she begins a journey around Gamindustri with IF and Compa. However, we've renewed the story with from fans and staff. Also, we've added more comical elements to the story since the comical touch present in the anime version was very well received.

We have included Vert, Noire, and Blanc in the main story, and as the story progresses, each character can be added to the party, when in the original game these three didn't have much involvement in the story until the end of the game. This change actually renewed the game as a whole. Also, there are newly added sub-characters who will be involved with these three in order to make them even more irresistible and fun! These new sub-characters are also very charming, so we hope that fans of the Neptunia series will welcome them like goddesses!

We have also included new personalities in the main story who were available as DLC in Neptunia V. The story has been rewritten to be more comical, like the anime. Even with the more comical story, we've made sure that the cool scenes are even cooler so that there will be a great mixture of funny and awesome. Finally, a rescue episode for a character has been added to Re;Birth1 as a surprise for fans of the Neptunia series!

Can you tell us some of the jokes that are new for the PlayStation Vita version?

HA: The entire storyline in Neptunia Re;Birth1 has been rewritten to be different from the original game on the PS3, so there will be new jokes and conversations for those who already played the original Neptunia to enjoy!

neptu-03

How much of the voice acting is new? Were you able to get the same voice actors?

HA: Every English voiced line in Re;Birth1 has been freshly recorded, and we are working with the same voice actors who have been in the Neptunia series.

Moving forward, will Idea Factory International bring over the Neptunia games? There are a lot of Neptunia titles to localize too. Are any of the games like Re;birth 2, the SRPG or PlayStation 4 game being considered?

HA: Idea Factory International would like to continue localizing the Neptunia series for many years to come for western Neptunia fans. However, there are no finalized plans for any new titles at this particular moment other than the ones that have already been announced.

Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1, a PS Vita remake of the original Hyperdimension Neptunia, was recently rated by the ESRB for PC, and Siliconera got in touch with Idea Factory to find out what was going on. Here’s what they said through their PR agency:

Idea Factory International is definitely interested in exploring the possibility of bringing Neptunia Re;Birth1 to the PC platform for PC s. However, nothing has been finalized at this moment. IFI hopes that they can actually make it happen in the future, though, or they would not have obtained the ESRB rating for that title.

There you go. Not announced yet, but they’re working on it. We’ll keep an eye on the situation and update as the PC version of the game makes progress.

Yes, Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 1, a PlayStation Vita remake of Compile Heart's PS3 RPG, will be released in the West. We're not surprised at the announcement, but rather who it came from. NIS America has been the caretakers of Neptunia and even signed on to publish Hyperdimension Neptunia PP, an idol game.

Instead of NIS America, Idea Factory International will publish Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 1 in North America and Europe. The game is slated for release in late summer and details about how it will be distributed will be announced later.

Hyerpdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 1 uses the battle system and the disc remake system from Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory. Characters like Tekken and CyberConnect2 are in Neptunia's first story too. Compile Heart also made a new event scenes and a new ending for the Vita version.

Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 1 has Neptune's friends like Falcom and Tekken from Hyperdimension Neptunia V instead of Red ad 5pb (who I guess is like Mages now).

The trailer also shows new event CG made for the Vita remake and extra enemies like Yonneko, Hakoinu, and Boxer X.

Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 1 comes out on October 31 for PlayStation Vita.

The magazine also says a Re;Birth 1 will have a coliseum in the game.
