After taking a brief detour to create an entirely seperate game (as one does), Kay Yu and friends have returned with a new update for bullet heaven/Survivors-like Holocure. While the update adds another two whole generations of Hololive Vtubers as characters, the real meat of Holocure Version 0.7 is the many additions to the Holohouse side-game.

But first, the new characters. Holocure Update 0.7 adds 9 vtubers from Hololive's 3rd and 4th generations, including now the now graduated Kiryu Coco (though not the terminated Uruha Rushia). Each character has their own personal weapon and set of 3 skills, some of which are fairly simple to understand while others encourage a very different style of play or build. Tsunomaki Watame's character, for example, lacks a lot of offensive power but one of her skill lets her defeat enemies by healing them. Or you could simply use her special, which fires an enormous laser, your choice.

There's also a new stage, a new hard mode, and a few new weapons. Holocure's Stage 5, Fantasy Island, honestly took me a good while to crack even with a nearly maxed out upgrade collection. It's a continuous vertical level with cannons to avoid and a lot of very tough enemies, some of which have extra projectile attacks. There's also a really cool final boss at the end and the new Fan Letter system even incentivizes going back to fight it several times for a rare drop.

The new weapons and items are a bit more subdued and situational, though. The new weapon especially isn't super powerful on its own, but combined into one of the new Collabs it can become really fearsome. The last big addition in Holocure 0.7 is the new skills, which let players choose a utility ability to take in to the game like a heal or a net that catches experience. These are all really useful, however so far I've found the dodge to be far and away the most powerful so it will be interesting to see how the Holocure team balances and builds around the mechanic.

You might be forgiven for thinking that was all, but no, Holocure has more to give. Because multiple new areas have been added to the Holohouse mode, a chill sub-game added with the previous update. Instead of a small area with a house to decorate and small fishing and management minigames, there is now an expansive area to the south containing something like 10 or 11 new minigames. One is a simple crafter-gatherer game involving hitting things until resources fall out, then fashioning them into new tools or crafting items for commission via a different activity. Another is essentially a straight up remake of platformer Jump King, while a new Usada Pekora-themed casino has several games of both chance and skill. You can even train up your mascot workers to fight in the arena, for the most adorable bloodsport.

If I had to criticize it, I'd say some of the minigames are fairly simple or a bit too self contained. There are some bonuses that can be taken into the main bullet heaven mode, but they're mostly quite small and not necessary if you want to skip them. But then that's also a positive, since if you're not as into the Holohouse side of the game you can safely ignore it.

I'd originally felt like the main game content felt a bit light, and that perhaps that was on of how much was in the Holohouse side of the update, but checking back through previous patch notes and there's just as much content in Holocure update 0.7 as usually comes with these large patches. My perception got skewed by just how much side content we got on top. It feels like Kay Yu and the Holocure team are not just getting better and more productive, but also more inventive and ambitious with what they want to try building within the game. If I were a studio looking for fresh talent I'd snap up these developers right away, but I hope we'll get to see what else they can cook up with Holocure for just a little while longer.

Holocure is immediately available for PC via Steam and itch.io.

Holocure update in November 2024 will add Hololive JP Gen 3 and 4 Vtubers

Kay Yu released a new teaser trailer for an update for HoloCure: Save the Fans! The Version 0.7 update will appear on November 15, 2024, and it will add the Japanese Hololive Generation 3 and 4 Vtubers to the game's playable character roster.

This update will basically add all Vtubers from the generational groups who are still active as of early November 2024. They are Usada Pekora, Houshou Marine, Shirogane Noel, and Shiranui Flare from Generation 3. The Generation 4 Vtubers Amane Kanata, Himemori Luna, Tokoyami Towa, and Tsunomaki Watame will appear too.

The 0.7 update will most notably include the former fourth-generation member Kiryu Coco, who graduated in July 2021. However, it will not feature Uruha Rushia, who was originally part of the third generation, but got dishonorably discharged with a contract termination in February 2022. This update will therefore add nine new playable characters in total.

The teaser trailer for the version 0.7 update of HoloCure is also available to view on the game's official YouTube channel:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qa-fOwDHN6g

Kay Yu initially released HoloCure on itch.io with Hololive English in mid-2022. Subsequent updates gradually added more Hololive Vtubers from the Japanese and Indonesian branches. The developer eventually got into direct with Cover, which also led to the game moving to Steam with the version 0.6 update in 2023.

HoloCure - Save the Fans! is available for free on PC via Steam. The Version 0.7 update for HoloCure will arrive on November 15, 2024.

Holo X Break

Kay Yu, the primary developer of fan-made Survivors-like Holocure, announced a new Hololive game called Holo X Break that will feature Vtubers from the 5th and 6th generations in Japan. The developer also confirmed that update 0.7 for Holocure is still in development.

Based on the screenshots and trailer, Holo X Break appears to be a side-scrolling beat-em-up in the vein of River City Girls, which developer Kay Yu worked on as a key animator. The developer's other work credits include Mushoku Tensei, Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War, and Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp.

The game's plot will follow the Hololive Vtuber agency's Momosuzu Nene, Omaru Polka, Shishiro Botan, and Yukihana Lamy as they attempt to rescue the company's CEO from Secret Society HoloX. While it is currently unknown what platform Holo X Break will release on, the previous game was only available for PC via Steam and Itch.io.

You can watch the trailer of the game in the tweet below, or catch the Japanese language trailer here.

Here are the first four screenshots from the new Hololive game that Kay Yu shared with us on social media:

Kay Yu's previous game Holocure came to Steam in August, 2023, after approval from Hololive owner Cover Corp, alongside update 0.6. The developer also explained how to get save data from the previous version to transfer to the Steam version, for those who were already playing.

Holo X Break will launch sometime in March 2024, though platforms at this time are unknown. Holocure is immediately available through Steam and Itch.io.

Holocure Main Page

Holocure is the simple fusion of Vtubers and Vampire Survivors sorts of games, both of which appeared almost overnight to become staples in the gaming and streaming spheres. Created primarily by animator Kay Yu, who also worked on other official Hololive projects, the game is a love letter to the streamers and the unending tide of memes, anecdotes, and "lore" spawned by their communities. But as numerous and often baffling as the references are, at the heart of Holocure is a genuinely well-made game that captures exactly what makes the Survivors-like minigenre so compelling.

Like its contemporaries, the gameplay mainly consists of maneuvering your character around the stage while using your weapons to clear the swarms of enemies, then collecting the experience they drop. Leveling up allows you to pick an item or weapon, some of which combine into "collabs" that change how they work dramatically and free up a slot. Stickers can drop from enemies, applying effects to the main weapon ranging from beneficial (like damage over time) to comical (like playing an off-key trombone effect with every attack). One even provides a significant damage boost to the main weapon for every open weapon slot, opening up the option for a main weapon-only playstyle.

[caption id="attachment_982084" align="aligncenter" width="1200"]Holocure Gameplay Screenshot by Siliconera[/caption]

The stages themselves are bright and colorful affairs with stage-specific bosses and telegraphed danger zones appearing at regular timed intervals. While most non-boss enemies do little more than walk towards the player, the tempo of the levels, charming chiptune soundtrack, and sheer variety of enemy designs keep it from becoming rote or tedious. Especially when every run is consistently earning you more coins, which can be put towards new characters, items or upgrades.

The upgrade store has your typical suite of health, movement, and damage up, but also has options to unlock or disable specific mechanics to affect the difficulty. Increasing enemy density, restricting the number of weapons you can carry, or locking you to a single health point are all present for those wanting a challenge. But the real draw is the gacha system, which is how you unlock new characters. Sectioned into banners of 3 to 5, with a generous pity currency on each, pulling for a specific character is far less painful than actual, microtransaction-fed gacha systems. Once you get a new character, trying them out will net you even more coins towards new ones.

There are currently 38 characters, each based on the various streamers belonging to the Hololive Vtuber agency. All of them have their own signature weapons, special abilities, and three unique skills. As well as referencing or representing the streamer's personality, they all encourage particular playstyles or item synergies. One character might have a simple kit based around a gun and some damage buffs, while another might scale their damage from the area size stat or or summon damaging spikes whenever they heal. It's not just colorful, but adds an impressive degree of variety to the mechanics and encourages finding synergies with other items and weapons.

[caption id="attachment_982085" align="aligncenter" width="1200"]Holocure gacha Screenshot by Siliconera[/caption]

Then there's the Holohouse mode added with Update 0.6, which lets players access an alternate map with cooking, farming, and fishing minigames. As well as allowing you to cook food that offers buffs while playing the main game, this area also acts as a timesink for additional coins earned as you buy furniture to customize your room. Various characters can and leave your little area, dropping fish for you or just milling about. It's a cute addition and a nice distraction from the main game, while still allowing you to earn coins towards upgrades or characters if you wish.

When reviewing Idol Showdown, another Hololive fangame, I wondered if the sheer density of references would make the game less accessible or even obnoxious to the unfamiliar, and that worry still applies to Holocure. But then, Vampire Survivors itself was a hodgepodge of bootleg Castlevania vibes, jokes intentionally half or mistranslated, and references to anime popular with a certain generation of Italian children, so perhaps it's a moot point. Just don't ask what 'AsaCoco' is or why it's shaped like... that.

When Holocure first launched with only 10 characters and one level, it was a promising project to keep an eye on. Now, several updates later, its an easy recommendation even to non-fans because the foundation was solid and the style charming. Beyond the jokes and references, Holocure stands on its own as a great example of the genre, scratching the itches for unlock-hunting and build-crafting that these games do so well. And with regular updates and a ionate fanbase, it could be something really special by the time it reaches 1.0.

Holocure is immediately available for free on PC via Steam and Itch.io.

Holocure Main Menu Save Data

KayAnimate, developer of Hololive fan-game HoloCure , explained how to transfer save data from the previous game client to the new release on Steam. The game was originally released on Itch.io, but launched a Steam version on August 17, 2023. The good news is, as long as you load the game up on the same device you played on previously, it should automatically transfer your old save data and achievements to the new Steam client.

KayAnimate recommended that you install the Steam version before deleting the old client to ensure the data is preserved. Another issue to be aware of is that names including certain characters will have been reset to a default name, but a new name can be entered under settings in the game's leaderboard menu.

Made in the style of Vampire Survivors and Magic Survival, HoloCure is a fan-made game featuring Vtubers from the Hololive Agency. The Steam release was announced back in May 2023, shortly after Update 0.5 added the first and second generations of JP branch . Lead Developer Kay Yu also previously worked with Hololive on the animated video for Mori Calliope and Gawr Gura's song "Q," which has since ed 20 million views.

HoloCure is immediately available for PCs on Steam and Itch.io for free, and save data from previous versions should transfer automatically.

Kay Yu explained that the Hololive fan-game launcher will be discontinued, in exchange for Steam being the main storefront for ing and updating the game. On the same note, the Steam release will arrive when update 0.6 is finished. Additionally, all progress made prior to the relocation will be carried over to the Steam version.

Before the game launcher, updates for HoloCure would mean going to the game’s official itch.io site and ing them separately. With the Steam version, updates will be ed and installed automatically like other games on the platform. However, players can copy and back up the “save_n.dat” file from the game folder as a precautionary measure. The itch.io portal will also keep posting each new update as per usual.

According to the statement, the development team reached out to Cover Corp, Hololive’s parent company, and received the approval to continue in the new storefront as an unofficial free fan-game. Moreover, HoloCure’s creator Kay Yu explained the announcement was intentionally written in a worrying style as a joke. Furthermore, a teaser for the game’s new update was also shared.

As a reminder, the most recent game update for HoloCure brought even more Japanese VTubers as playable characters. These included Hololive 1st and 2nd generation . There are now 24 available, each with various skills and alternative skins. More content is planned to arrive with later updates.
