Publishing house Iwanami Shoten will start releasing a complete collection of Hayao Miyazaki concept art from December 2024. So far, we know for sure that you’ll be able to get books of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, and My Neighbor Totoro. [Thanks, Comic Natalie!]

The release schedule for the books will be Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and Castle in the Sky on December 5, 2024. Then, some time in March 2025, you’ll be able to get My Neighbor Totoro. Afterwards, Iwanami will release some of the earlier films and shorts that Miyazaki worked on or was involved with.

Each book will contain the concept art that Miyazaki hand-drew for image and story boards. The concept art is for the staff to all be on the same page in regards to the aesthetics and worldview of a particular movie. Since Iwanami used a very powerful scanner for the original prints, there is as little quality loss as possible in the book. As well, each piece of art in the book is faithful to the real-life size of the board. Each book also contains information, art, unreleased works, and stories based on the movie and artwork in question. Toshio Suzuki, chairperson of Studio Ghibli, will also write a foreword for each one.

The Hayao Miyazaki concept art books will start coming out in December 2024. For those who want to get their Studio Ghibli fix beforehand, Netflix recently obtained the streaming rights to Grave of the Fireflies and The Boy and the Heron.

During the 96th Oscars Nominee Programs livestream on March 3, 2024, Studio Ghibli Co-Founder Hayao Miyazaki commented on his work for The Boy and the Heron. According to Miyazaki, he was able to finish it because the money kept coming. [Thanks, Game Watch!]

You can watch Miyazaki’s portion of the interview from around the 26:20 mark of the livestream. He’s with Toshio Suzuki, who is a producer, co-founder, and president of Studio Ghibli. He was the producer for The Boy and the Heron as well.

During the interview, they thanked people for nominating their film, and then started discussing it. When Suzuki asked what Miyazaki was most happy about with The Boy and the Heron, Miyazaki took a moment to think before saying that he’s glad they finished it. Production took seven years, which was the longest Studio Ghibli ever took making a movie. Miyazaki joked that he thought they could never finish it, but they did because the money never stopped coming in. After sharing a laugh, Suzuki said, “Yay.” He then flashed the peace sign at the camera.

The Boy and the Heron came out in July 2023. Despite sharing a name with a novel in the original Japanese, the story is an original one with autobiographical elements from Miyazaki’s childhood. The movie made over $167 million worldwide.

The Boy and the Heron has finished its theatrical run and Blu-Ray/DVD versions should come out some time in 2024.

How many times has Hayao Miyazaki come out of retirement now? I’ve lost count. But I am sure glad he did. I went to see the new Ghibli movie The Boy and the Heron this past weekend here in Japan. Do you your first Ghibli film? Mine was Kiki’s Delivery Service back in third grade. I don’t much about how I much liked it, but it remained with me for years until I rediscovered it and the rest of the Ghibli cata high school. As my first Ghibli movie, it remained high on my list of favorite movies from the studio, and now there’s a new addition with The Boy and the Heron.

While The Boy and the Heron isn’t scheduled to release in the West until December 2023, I can’t wait for you all to get to see it. It feels like previous movies from Miyazaki, while bringing new energy as well. At just over two hours long, it introduces an uncharacteristically large cast of characters. Naturally, the protagonists are, well... the boy and the heron. The movie shares many themes and ideas from previous Miyazaki films, but spins them in a new and refreshing way.

Ghibli movies often dealt with the hardships and adventure of making sense of the world as a child. Miyazaki seems to have made it his life's work to keep children dreaming and imagining a world both different and so similar to ours. The Boy and the Heron deals with these same themes, but in different ways than before, and I believe achieves that quite well. It perfectly captures the feeling of being a child in a world you feel helpless to change or understand.

The move is also, in ways I can’t quite explain without going into spoilers, a request for the viewers (specifically children) who might watch it. The Japanese version of the movie has the title “How Do You Live,” which is shared with a book by Yoshino Genzaburo. While the stories don’t seem to have too much overlap, the themes and ideas they want to express seem to be similar. So, if you’re finding it hard to wait for the English release, the book may give you at least a little taste of what the movie is about.

The visuals in The Boy and The Heron are also exactly what you expect from a Studio Ghibli film. The characters are all extremely believable in their facial expressions and all the backgrounds are beautiful and could be paintings hanging in an art museum themselves. While most of the movie is typical (and not ina bad way) Ghibli, the opening sequence is something else entirely. It was something I wasn’t expecting, but absolutely blew me away.

It’s hard for me to give a full review with absolutely no spoilers, but suffice to say that The Boy and The Heron is a movie worth seeing in theaters when it releases and has rocketed to a high place on my list of favorite Ghibli movies. Make sure and set aside a date in your calendar to catch this one in theaters in December! It’s so good!

The Boy and The Heron is set to release in theaters outside Japan on December 8, 2023. It is airing in Japan now as How Do You Live.

The voice actors cast for the new Hayao Miyazaki Studio Ghibli movie, How Do You Live? is now available online. It features popular actors such as Takuya Kimura and Kou Shibasaki. Kenshi Yonezu sang the theme song “Chikyugi” for the film. [Thanks, Oricon!]

As of the time of writing, the cast list on Oricon only provides the voice actors and not the characters they play in How Do You Live?. In any case, you will be able to hear the voice talents of:

• Jun Fubuki (Pinako Rockbell in Fullmetal Alchemist: The Revenge of Scar)
• Karen Takizawa (Sei Sato in Maria-sama ga Miteru)
• Keiko Takeshita (Sadako Maki in Arriety)
• Kou Shibasaki (Mitsuko in Battle Royale)
• Masaki Suda (Shinpachi in Gintama)
• Sawako Agawa (Taeko Nakamura in Egoist)
• Shinobu Otake (Nikuko in Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko)
• Takuya Kimura (Yagami in Lost Judgment)

Suda and Shibasaki will play the leading roles. Meanwhile, Takuya Kimura is a special guest.

Kenshi Yonezu is a prolific and popular Japanese singer. Aside from providing the theme song “Chikyugi” for How Do You Live?, he also sang the opening of Chainsaw Man and the second season of My Hero Academia. As well, he recently provided the theme song for Final Fantasy XVI. As of the time of writing, “Chikyugi” is not available on YouTube.

How Do You Live? is a new Studio Ghibli movie currently airing in Japanese theaters. There’s no international release date yet. There’s been practically no promotional campaign for the film. But the story appears to take place during WWII and focuses on the idea of creating a world without conflict.

The new film by legendary anime director Hayao Miyazaki will be released by Studio Ghibli in the summer of next year. With the working title How Do You Live ("Kimi-tachi wa Dou Ikiroka"), the film is scheduled for a July 14, 2023 premiere in Japan.

Little is known about the new film's content, but Studio Ghibli released the first poster illustration for How Do you Live via its official social media s. Check out the poster below.

The poster shows a sketch of a bird-like creature. Something seems "off" about the creature's design, though, as there appears to be another set of eyes peeking out from beneath the bird's beak, as if something were wearing the bird as an outfit.

Miyazaki initially retired after completing 2013's The Wind Rises, but returned to Studio Ghibli in 2016 to work on How Do You Live. Producer Toshio Suzuki said that in beginning the project, he intended to dedicate "one last film" to his grandson. How Do You Live is touted as a new and original story by Hayao Miyazaki, but is inspired by the the 1937 novel of the same title by author Genzaburo Yoshino. Miyazaki previously said that the book was personally important to him, and will play a role in the life of the protagonist of the film. The book's story follows a teenager named Copper, grappling with the loss of his father, beginning to ask questions about life. In trying for find answers, he explores pre-war Japan on his bike, making discoveries about what matters most in life. How Do You Live? was released in English by Algonquin Books in 2021.

How Do You Live premieres in Japan on July 14, 2023. An international release date has not yet been announced.
