Hatoful Boyfriend creator Moa stated that she received the unpaid royalties owed to her by Epic Games. The developer previously stated that she had not received royalties for over 2 years since Epic took over the game's publisher Mediatonic.

As well as reporting that the royalties had been paid, Moa took time to thank ers, whose "buzz" she says was helpful and meaningful in solving the issue. She also stated that she believes that Epic Games will now send her regular sales reports.

Hatoful Boyfriend is a 2011 romantic visual novel set in a world in which humans co-exist with sentient birds. Taking on the role of a sophomore student at a school for birds, the player attempts to woo a number of avian suitors. The game also inspired a Christmas-themed sequel called Hatoful Boyfriend: Holiday Star, as well as well as a complete edition including both games and several extras.

The issue with Hatoful Boyfriend and royalties was originally brought up by Moa on Twitter back in late September 2023. Epic Games also develops and publishes Fortnite, which wrapped up its Fortnite OG mini-season earlier this month.

Hatoful Boyfriend is available on the PS4, Vita, mobile devices, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store.

Moa, the creator of Hatoful Boyfriend, has stated on Twitter that she has not received a single payment from Epic Games since her game appeared on the platform two years ago. She explains that Mediatonic used to own distribution rights for Hatoful Boyfriend, which would give her royalty fees. However, since Epic Games bought Mediatonic after Fall Guys’s success, she has not gotten any payments from the game's sales. Epic Games has responded and stated that it is looking into it.

Though Moa has tried to Epic Games’s ing to try and sort this out, she has not been able to get a response until Epic Games reached out to her on Twitter. In a follow-up Tweet, she explains that this isn’t a matter of life or death. She can get by without the royalties from Hatoful Boyfriend. However, she wanted to ask what was going on since Epic Games was the one to suddenly remove the game from the PlayStation Store and mobile e-shops.

Hatoful Boyfriend is a doujin otome visual novel that came out in 2011. Its biggest draw is that all of the characters you can romance are sentient birds, who are now the apex lifeforms on the planet. It generally received positive reviews and was popular due to word-of-mouth marketing. The idea of a dating sim, but the romance options are all giant talking birds (that look like real birds), was novel at the time.

Hatoful Boyfriend is available for the PS4, Windows PC, OS X, and mobile devices. You can actually get the game via Steam, as well.

A special Hatoful Boyfriend event is going to be held in Japan. From March 1-7, 2017, at Osaka, Japan’s Art Cocktail, the Special Exhibition: The World of Hatoful Boyfriend presentation will take place. Visitors can come in and look at concept art, drawings, and other designs put together by Hato Moa and Damurushi, the creators of the dating sim, during Hatoful Boyfriend’s development.

The Special Exhibition: The World of Hatoful Boyfriend will run from 1pm until 7pm JST on Monday through Saturday, but will only be open from 1pm-5pm on Sunday, March 5, 2017. Hato Moa will be there March 3-5, 2017.

Hatoful Boyfriend is available for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and PC, as well as Android and Apple iOS devices.

Last year, Hato Moa and Erick Scarecrow ran a successful Kickstarter campaign to create Hatoful Boyfriend plushes. 2,514 people ended up kicking in $145,015 to get stuffed Ryouta, Okosan, Shuu, Kazuaki, Sakuya, Yuuya, Anghel, Nageki, Souma Isa, and Maid Ryouta plushes. On November 3, 2016, Hato Moa and Erick Scarecrow decided to do it again. The Hatoful Boyfriend 2nd Semester Plush Project crowdfunding campaign has launched on Kickstarter.

This time, the goal is to make 5” plush birds based on characters from Hatoful Boyfriend and Hatoful Boyfriend: Holiday Star. The project is hoping to raise $50,000 by December 6, 2016, of which over $27,000 has been raised already. The goal is to make Azami, Tohri, Rabu-san, Hitori, Kazuaki-kun, Ryuuji, Albert, and The King plushes, as well as a special 12” Anghel set that will also include Wallenstein, Dark Anghel, and an Anghel Poncho. A yet-unnamed $65,000 stretch goal has also been announced.

The smallest contribution someone can make to the Hatoful Boyfriend 2nd Semester Plush Project is $25. This will get people either set 01, which includes Tohri, Azami, and Rabu-san, or set 02, with Hitori, Zakuaki-kun, and Ryuuji. For $45, people can get both sets. The Albert or The King plush sets, which include the limited edition birds and both sets 01 and 02, require $100 contributions. The 12” Anghel set is $250. Expected delivery is April 2017.

Each bird will have embroidered features and be made of super velour material, as well as have a hang-tag and PVC character label.

A Kickstarter campaign to create stuffed animals based on Hatoful Boyfriend characters has reached a new milestone. Over $95,000 has been raised by over 1,500 by everybirdie who needed a plush pigeon from the Hatoful Boyfriend Official Plush Project.

Reaching this milestone means that all of the project’s stretch goals have been funded. That means that, in addition to the initially announced stuffed toys based on Ryouta, Okosan, and Shuu, Nageki, Anghel, Sakuya, Yuuya, and Kazuaki will be turned into toys.

The minimum amount to pledge and get a single stuffed Hatoful Boyfriend Official Plush Project toy is $16, which provides the person a Shuu partridge. People can increase their pledge by $12 for each additional bird. There is no contribution level available that provides all eight birds. People who want every bird will need to pay $25 for the option that includes Ryouta, Okosan, and Shuu, then pay an additional $60 to add on the other five birds.

The Hatoful Boyfriend Official Plush Project Kickstarter Campaign ends on December 6, with the toys supposedly shipping out in May 2016. Hatoful Boyfriend: Holiday Star, the sequel, will be released on Steam for PCs before 2015 ends.

Yesterday, Hato Moa and Erick Scarecrow launched a Kickstarter with a goal of creating Hatoful Boyfriend plush toys based upon the mad doctor Shuu, childhood friend Ryouta, and all-around crazy bird Okosan. The goal was to get $25,000 in 32 days. One day later, over $46,000 has been raised by over 860 backers and everybirdie gets the chance to acquire another plushie. Nageki Fujishiro, the mourning dove, has ed the “cast.”

While prototype plushies of Shuu, Ryouta, and Okosan have been released, Hato Moa and Erick Scarecrow only have concept art of the Nageki plush to share. People who have pledged $16 to get Shuu or $25 to get Shuu, Ryouta, or Nageki can chip in an additional $16 to add Nageki to their orders.

Nageki’s ing of the Kickstarter flock isn’t the only recent Hatoful Boyfriend Official Plush Project development. The $75 backer levels, which would have guaranteed people the three base birds and a limited edition plush of either Maid Ryouta or Souma Isa have sold out. As of writing, there are still five of the ten $1,000 level backer  bundles available.

The Hatoful Boyfriend Official Plush Project Kickstarter ends on December 6. The plush birds are expected to take flight in May 2016. No word yet if Sakuya, Yuuya, Kazuaki, or Azami will be added as additional plushes.

Update: A stretch goal has been reached, adding Anghel as a plushie. Existing backers can add $16 to their order to get one. The $55,000 stretch goal adds a Yuuya plushie.

Hato Moa and Erick Scarecrow have teamed up to launch a Kickstarter project that will create plush toys of three of Hatoful Boyfriend’s romanceable pigeons. The campaign began on November 3, asking for $25,000 in backing to make the toys. As of 10:30am CT, over $22,000 had been raised by over 390 backers to create the Hatoful Boyfriend Official Plush Project stuffed animals.

The Hatoful Boyfriend Official Plush Project’s goal is to make 5” stuffed toys of Ryouta Kawara, a rock dove that’s Hiyoko’s childhood friend, Shuu Iwamine, the chukar partridge and school doctor who’s known for… certain proclivities, and Okosan, a pudding-loving fantail pigeon. Each toy will include a hang-tag and PVC character keychain of the character in their human form. (Note: Okosan doesn’t have a human form, so his PVC tag shows him in uniform.)

For a $16 investment, people can get Early Bird pricing on a single Shuu plush. For $25, someone can get one of each plush, one keychain for each, and a Steam code for the PC version of Hatoful Boyfriend. The $75 option will get you all of the $25 backer rewards, as well as a plush of either Souma Isa or Maid Ryouta. The highest pledge level, $1,000, gets you all of the plush toys and one of 10 12” Shuu stuffed animals.

Most people didn't get to meet Tohri Nishikikouji until Hatoful Boyfriend: Holiday Star. Which is a shame, because man is that golden pheasant majestic. But the PS4 and Vita releases changed that, giving people a chance to romance the chukar partridge's rival.

Well, eventually. I took to the Vita version of Hatoful Boyfriend to find love with a fine, feathered friend again, only to discover Tohri isn't easy. (Is any relationship?) No, you have to work for amour with this avian. To be specific, you have to love a lot of other birds before you can hook up with this one.

This is because Tohri's romance is connected to Shu Iwamine. You have to fall in love with another birdie like Okosan or Sakuya before you unlock the option to the Infirmary Staff on April 11th. Being part of keeping the pigeons of St. Pigeonation healthy is a big part of loving Shuu and Tohri. After you romance some inconsequential bird, then earn an ending with Shuu, Hatoful Boyfriend will unlock the option to hook up with Tohri.

As with every Hatoful Boyfriend route, Tohri's story is rather hilarious. He's constantly trying to keep tabs on Shuu, and Hiyoko keeps getting in the way and foiling his plot. Your "meeting" with him is orchestrated because her hunter/gatherer paranoia leads her to keep destroying the surveillance devices he's placed around the mad doctor. He isn't interested in Hiyoko as a friend, lover, or potential test subject. He wants her out of the way because dang it, somebody's gotta die!

Getting his heart means becoming Tohri's partner in crime. Since you may have come to his route after some unpleasantness with Shuu, you probably won't have any moral objections to this course of action. (Though, Hiyoko will never actually assist Tohri with his scheme.) Securing his affections is as simple as initially destroying his cameras in the infirmary to get his attention, then choosing to get in touch with him on October 10. There are only three decisions needed to get onto his route, so you’ll always win him as long as you’re accommodating to his needs.

Of course, you can only be pleasant with the pheasant in the PS4 and Vita versions of Hatoful Boyfriend. The free PC version of the route won't be released by Hato Moa until later this fall.

It was announced a couple of weeks back that the PlayStation versions (PS4 / PS Vita) of Hatoful Boyfriend would be getting an extra route featuring Tohri that’s not available in the original PC version of the game.

However, the dating sim’s original creator Hato Moa isn’t happy with this, and has announced that she’ll be bringing the Tohri route to PC for free.

“I do not want to force fandom to purchase Hatoful again and again just for bonus scenes. So I will personally make a free Japanese/English VN with the new Tohri scenes script,” she wrote on her Tumblr.

“Just please note that Tohri route in PS is developed by Mediatonic but the free VN will be by me as always. This means both of them have the same script however, perhaps other will be different each other. (pictures, sound effects, musics, etc.) Also maybe the free VN takes some time to be completed. I’m trying to release this autumn. Thank Sony for allowing me to release the free Tohri VN!”

It’s implied here that the Tohri route will be turned into a completely separate visual novel that will be available to anyone for free. However, it seems more likely that it’ll be available as DLC for owners of the full game to . We’ll know for sure this fall when it comes out.

Mediatonic and publisher Devolver Digital have announced that avian dating sim Hatoful Boyfriend will be out for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita on July 21st.

The PlayStation versions of the game will have a new romance option. You’ll be able to chat up Tohri Nishikikouji who was previously only available in the sequel Hatoful Boyfriend: Holiday Star, which will also be heading to PS4 and PS Vita later this year.

“This new content means there is a whole new story path for longtime fans and new players to the series as well as a brand new ending,” writes Devolver’s Nigel Lowrie.

Three years ago, I fell in love with a man. He was dashing. The kind of man every other girl in the school adored. They wished he would be out, picking up nesting materials with them. For some reason, he chose me. He loved me and, despite his constant greeting of "Salut~!," I loved him in return.

My second love wasn't so pure. He was a man possessed. Consumed by his thirst for knowledge, no-one could cross paths with him and survive. Such ion is rare. Like a moth to a flame, I headed toward my inevitable demise. I regretted nothing though, for who could resist such a man?

Perhaps it's only fitting that my third love was otherworldly. My pure heart (shut up Ishaan and anyone else who knows me) allowed me to happen upon a lost soul. Our love burned brightly and, while we couldn't remain together, I could take solace in the fact that he was finally able to move forward towards something better with my .

Yet, all of these affairs were fleeting. Despite the love we had for one another, it couldn't last. Those damn computer requirements got in the way. Fortunately, things are different now. Enough time has ed. My heart has healed. It's time to go Hatoful again.

...What? You all thought I was talking about real men? Yeah, right! Like any human could inspire that kind of devotion! No, I was talking about Yuuya Sakazaki, Shuu Iwamine, and Nageki Fujishiro - three of the famous birdies from Hatoful Boyfriend! To be more specific, the three are a fantail pigeon, chukar partridge, and mourning dove.

Hatoful Boyfriend is one of my all-time, top dating sims. It's hands-down one of the most imaginative and hilarious games I've ever played. Unfortunately, it wasn't the easiest title to play. Finding it, getting a translation patch, and then even getting the right patches to run it on your computer got to be such a hassle. That problem was solved with a little help from Mediatonic and Devolver Digital.

I was concerned about the remake. I mean, it's only natural. As rough as Hatoful Boyfriend was, the game was something of a masterpiece. Such worries were immediately assuaged. The translation remains the same, with only some minor alterations to ensure everything reads well and there aren't glaring spelling or grammatical errors. The character portraits remain the same, though there's this nice shadowing around them that ensures they "pop" against the redrawn backgrounds. The music even sounds better, and once again we'll find "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies" striking fear into our hearts. Everyone involved could have offered these alterations up and fans would have been satisfied.

They didn't. Instead, all parties involved went a step further and made a fan-demanded change. Azami "Carve it into your soul!" Koshiba now has her own route. Yes, Hatoful Boyfriend isn't just an otome game anymore. Hato Moa came back with this original content because people loved Azami too much in the original game to let her run off with someone else. The new storyline fits seemlessly into the game, Both newcomers and dedicated fans will surely appreciate the wit and wisdom of the Way of the Sparrow.

Still, I began this article by detailing some of my romantic affairs. Since I'm clearly the kind of woman who kisses and tells, I may as well share more.

I'd always heard good things about Okosan. I have no idea why I didn't pursue him in the original Hatoful Boyfriend. I greatly enjoyed his references to Pokemon games. Perhaps I feared he would be too silly? I decided his tale would be a good starting point for a reintroduction, and must it that his is now one of my favorite routes. There's something about his "best" ending. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but I enjoyed the supernatural twist. I only wish I could share the nickname I've created for him, because it's just too perfect, given one of his ending event images.

After Okosan, I went back to Dr. Iwamine. (He only hurts me because he loves me!) There is no doubt in my mind that the "Fat Bird" is the best yandere character in otome. I can't bring myself to start Ace's route in Alice in the Heart because I know he won't, can't, compare.

From there, I hopped among many lovers like a finch skipping along the bottom of a birdcage, searching for dropped seeds. I went on adventures with Azami. I fought alongside Anghel as Edel Blau. I conquered it all, then explored a rather "hurtful" truth.

Hatoful Boyfriend is a true delight. It's a comedic otome game that shows a tremendous amount of craftmanship and dedication. Especially once people go through every single romantic route to uncover more sinister truths. Most people look at it as a joke. They aren't wrong. It absolutely is a hilarious, satirical look at the dating sim genre. But, people would be wrong to write it off as a gag game. The birdie has two faces, and I wholeheartedly encourage anyone with an interest in visual novels to attend St. Pigeonation's.

1. If you're looking for a recommended "route" order, I suggest this: Ryouta, Okosan, Sakuya, Azami, Nageki, Nanaki, Shuu, Yuuya, Anghel, then Hurtful.

2. In of content, my routes from most to least favorite are: Anghel, Shuu, Okosan, Yuuya, Azami, Sakuya, Nanaki, Nageki, then Ryouta.

After a short extra delay to do some final polish, the updated version of bird dating-sim Hatoful Boyfriend is now out on Steam.

This updated version includes a new Azami scenario and ending written by series creator Hato Moa as well as updated visuals. There is both a regular edition and a special Summer of Dove collector’s edition. The latter comes with a digital soundtrack, exclusive comic, wallpapers of Oko-san and a St. Pigeonation Yearbook (Class of 2014).

You’re the only human at St Pigeonation, a prestigious school usually meant only for birds. As you go to class, you can date the birds and eventually, perhaps, find true love. There are multiple endings to follow for replayability.

The standard edition of the game will now go for $9.99 while the collector’s edition will retail for $14.99. You can get it here.
