Nihon Falcom and GungHo Online Entertainment revealed the Japanese and English voice actors for Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter, the remake of the first title in The Legend of Heroes: Trails series.

The video revealing the Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter Japanese voice cast doesn’t include any samples of how the characters sound in the remake. Instead, the video only shows the new character portraits alongside the names of the actors. The same goes for the English voice cast trailer.

Here is the list of the new Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter Japanese voice actors alongside their previous voice actors from the original The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky trilogy.

  • Estelle Bright - Tomoyo Takayanagi (previously Akemi Kanda)
  • Joshua Bright - Natsumi Fujiwara (previously Mitsuki Saiga)
  • Scherazard Harvey - Chika Anzai (previously Yuka Shioyama)
  • Olivier Lenheim - Takehito Koyasu (no change)
  • Kloe Rinz - Hina Yomiya (previously Junko Minaguchi)
  • Agate Crosner - Taku Yashiro (previously Takayuki Kondo)
  • Tita Russell - Hikaru Iida (previously Hiromi Konno)
  • Zin Vathek - Tetsu Inada (no change)

Meanwhile, you can check out the English version of the voice cast reveal here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYiKVR3TNp8

While some of the original Japanese voice cast of Trails in the Sky remain in the remake, most of the cast seem to have been changed replaced. However, the recast will not come as a surprise to some people, as the original Japanese voice actor for Joshua Bright, Mitsuki Saiga, showed surprise at the announcement of Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter back in August 2024.

Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter will come out in Fall 2025 for the PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. PC players can check out the minimum requirements here.

Key art for Deathverse: Let It Die, featuring the two presenters of the content behind the game's logo

Gungho Online will suspend all services for Deathverse: Let It Die, the battle royale spiritual sequel to 2016’s Let It Die to redevelopment. The suspension will begin on July 18, 2023, less than one year since the game's release on September 28, 2022. The game is free-to-play, however paid Death Metal currency sales will stop on February 7, 2023.

In a letter published on the Deathverse: Let It Die website, the development team cited ongoing challenges with things like lag and in-game matchmaking that have persisted since launch. Unable to fully resolve these issues with live updates, the team decided to temporarily suspend services in order to redevelop the title.

No duration for the suspension has been announced. Nor has the team commented on what areas the redevelopment will reach. However, the letter does state that the game will be re-released with “significant improvements.”

With the suspension, the Deathverse team will be ending the sale of currency, Death Metal, on February 7, 2023. Additionally, while the entirety of Season 2 will be released as scheduled, Season 3 content will only be partially available.

Deathverse: Let It Die is currently available on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC, and the service suspension will begin on July 18, 2023. There is no indication of how long the redevelopment phase will last.

Deathverse Let it Die

Let It Die still lives on, but like many things hard to kill, it's back in a new form: Deathverse: Let It Die. Where the previous game was a sort of hybrid of single-player action game and a "roguelite" run-based dungeon-crawler, this one's squarely focused on multiplayer. They're also both free-to-play, though upon cursory examination Deathverse's model is a much better fit, informed by several years of testing what works and what doesn't in the live-game space. I got some time with an in-progress multiplayer build of the game, and played a few sessions with of the dev team at Supertrick Games and staff at GungHo Online Entertainment recently. Though I came in with few expectations, I came away from the experience appreciating its lively aesthetic and even a bit of hope for its chances in a crowded field.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhUl22KG_g8

In essence, Deathverse is a battle royal game. Its structure will be familiar to anyone who's brushed up against a PUBG or a Fortnite. Players jump into a session, and are deposited on the map to try to survive to become the last one standing. Various mechanisms shrink the play area over time, forcing players to confront each other, eventually resulting in a winner. Sprinkle in some RPG-style progression and you've got a game that folks can play for many sessions. Unlike the PUBGs and Fortnites of the world, though, Deathverse is focused on melee combat. Its combat distance and general model are derived from the original Let It Die, but the controls are a bit simplified. You pick one of five types of weapons, and are fully armed when you drop in. In the build we played, every weapon was unlocked, with a total of 15 weapons (3 variations on 5 archetypes) available at launch. When the game launches fully, more weapons will need unlocking via progression.

The selection was pretty eclectic. Each weapon variant has a special attack and an "ultimate", and these are different between individual variants, allowing for diversity even within weapons of the same basic type. You had a machete, which chops and stabs in short, easily controlled strikes, or a Katana, which has a long reach and can counter enemy attacks. Gauntlets can deliver rapid attacks, while heavy hammers can sweep large areas. Finally, the buzzsaws can rev up to deliver damage, and can even be used to "ride" up vertical walls for quick traversal. You can also equip sub-abilities picked up on the field to grant special powers, like invisibility. Everyone also has an energy shield they can use to defend from attacks, or to send out a ranged bolt of energy. I gave each weapon a try, and gravitated a lot to the hammers thanks to their wide areas of effect. They're particularly useful because the third-person melee combat can get pretty hectic once more than two players are in the mix, so it's nice to be able to just yell "Screw it!" and start spinning around in a huge circle, hurting everything in reach.

Each map in Deathverse is divided into zones, which become "corrupted" over time. The zones are kind of like nodes, so rather than a smoothly collapsing circle of territory like in FortniteDeathverse puts each area on a countdown before it becomes uninhabitable, funneling players towards a "Showdown Zone". The Showdown Zone is a pretty exciting place to end a match. Once it gets closed in with a few players remaining, the walls fall away to reveal a huge arena full of cheering spectators. Everyone in Deathverse is participating in a game show called "Death Jamboree", competing for glory and prizes. The tone of the presentation is slick and cynical, combining a glossy retro-futurism with a grindhouse world of rusty blades and polished ray-guns. It works for me, and Deathverse's twisted world felt like Smash TV for serial killers from the Gilded Age. It helps that the character models look slick and nicely realized. The game is, narratively speaking, a sequel to Let It Die, technically taking place centuries after the original game, but I'll be honest: I didn't play enough of Let It Die to even what that game's story was, so I can't really speak as to any narrative connections.

In a given match, your enemies are more than just the 15 other contestants in the arena with you. The areas are also filled with Cryptids, wandering creatures that range from harmless to intimidating. You'll want to fight a few to build up your "Voltage" (your health), but be careful about getting distracted - a player might take the chance to sneak up on you for a quick kill.

And then there are the Hunters. At once per match, Deathverse unleashes a Hunter: A very powerful NPC that targets players in an attempt to spice things up for the audience. There are three Hunters available at launch: Codename Q, G, and M. Each also behaves entirely differently. Hunter Q is a standard melee-ranged beast. She chases down any player she finds and lays into them with custom fist weapons. The other two Hunters are more unique. Hunter G is a sniper, and targets one player alone with a highly visible target marker and laser sight. Let the marker count down, and G executes you with a precision gunshot. But you can lose your mark by attacking the other player, kind of like playing "Tag, you're It!". Time things right and you can get G to execute someone else instead.

Hunter M is the most entertaining. M starts in a match as a harmless floating UFO creature that players can shoot down. Shoot M down and you become the Hunter, your face covered with an alien tentacle slug and your body bulked up like a JoJo's Bizarre Adventure character, posing constantly to deflect weapon attacks. As M, you have almost unlimited health, but a very limited countdown. Your job is to kill another player before the countdown ends, or else you explode instead. Hunters will rotate on a weekly basis throughout Deathverse's seasons, and more will be added over time.

The big question mark remains over the economy of Deathverse as a free-to-play game. Developer Supertrick and GungHo are leaning into a battle-like system called a "Jamboree ", that unlocks cosmetics like weapon and character skins with progression. There are lots of cosmetic options available, with many interesting costumes , projections to put a decoration on your energy shield, accessories for your little "Wilson" buddy-drone, and even items for your personal room. Players can also earn a number of unlocks freely, through a crafting system that uses materials scavenged in the arena. Deathverse s matchmade competitive multiplayer, a no-progression exhibition mode, and "room code"-based matches. The room code system seems useful if you're planning to stream, as it'll allow you to play with selected people like a group of friends or viewers. That said, you'll need to purchase the "Platinum"-tier Jamboree to host room-coded games.

All in all, Deathverse: Let It Die is an easy game to pick up as an alternative to overly gun-focused battle royal titles. It's also got a unique sense of style and humor that makes it stand out against the drab hyperrealism and the somewhat sanitized cartoon aesthetic of the leading players. Only time will tell if it's got the legs to make it in the long-term, but my own (very) short time with it felt like a welcome change of pace.

Deathverse is due for PS4 and PS5 on September 28, 2022, and October 5 on PC via Steam.

Though I came in with few expectations, I came away from the experience appreciating its lively aesthetic and even a bit of hope for its chances in a crowded field. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhUl22KG_g8 In essence, Deathverse is a battle royal game. Yo-kai Watch World shutting down after 4th anniversary

Level-5 and GungHo Online Entertainment announced that they will shut down Yo-kai Watch World on December 23, 2022, at noon in Japan's time zone. The companies have already removed real money purchases from the outgoing mobile game. They will also stop holding quests after November 30, 2022.

On the same day the game's server goes offline, Level-5 and GungHo will update the separately available Yo-kai Encyclopedia app. This will allow existing players to review their collected items and take new pictures of the yokai. The companies will cease all related to the game on February 21, 2023, by taking down both the official website and the Encyclopedia app from the public.

Yo-kai Watch World is a location-based mobile game where players must travel in real life to encounter and collect yokai in a similar fashion to Pokemon GO. The mobile game launched in late June 2018. The title is only available in Japan, but it compensates for that by showing elaborate buildings and landmarks on the map.

The Yo-kai Watch mobile game had a good reception during its launch year, and it was also one of the Most Creative Games winners in Google Play's Best of 2018 Awards. The game's operation team celebrated the title's fourth anniversary in June 2022 and had been regularly holding monthly events as recent as August 2022 before today's end-of-service announcement.

Yo-kai Watch World is available on iOS and Android mobile devices in Japan until December 23, 2022.

Teppen Jurassic Rampage

It seems Capcom thinks there's a future for Dino Crisis in the cards...literally.Digital card-battler Teppen is getting its own Dino Crisis-themed card pack, called Jurassic Rampage. In it, Dino Crisis characters Regina and Gail the playable roster. Teppen Jurassic Rampage will also have its own story missions, that build on the game's previous trilogy event.

Check out the cinematic trailer for the expansion below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hVsWwKZSZw

Teppen Jurassic Rampage tells the tale of what happens when Dino Crisis' resident mad scientist Edward Kirk gets his hands on the powerful "Third Energy". Spoiler: The result is dinosaurs. Pulled in from beyond time and space, invasive dinosaur species have invaded and disrupted the island's ecology. Government agents from all over have converged on the island to duke it out for possession of the new power. Some of the cards feature Regina and Gail interacting with other Capcom characters, such as "Agents Alliance", a card showing off Regina fighting alongside Resident Evil's Leon

Gungho and Capcom also revealed the card properties for the Teppen Jurassic Rampage playable characters, Regina and Gail.

In Dino Crisis, Regina is a special intelligence operative attached to the Secret Operation Raid Team (SORT). She infiltrated Ibis Island to find and return Edward Kirk to custody, only to find the island overrun with prehistoric reptiles. In Teppen, Regina is a Human Tribe character with the ability to spread additional damage points around when she attacks the enemy Hero.

Team leader of SORT, Gail was separated from Regina during the raid on Ibis Island. Unbeknownst to his teammates, Gail had a second objective in addition to apprehending Dr. Kirk: To obtain as much data as possible about Third Energy to aid in its weaponization by the government. As a Teppen Jurassic Rampage card, Gail can damage a facing unit as soon as he enters the field. When set to invade, he can deal damage to all enemies.

super spooky village teppen

It’s time to get a little chilly with the Super Spooky Village expansion in Teppen. Characters from Resident Evil Village and Ghosts’ n Goblins will appear in Teppen, such as Lady Dimitrescu, Arthur, and Lady Donna. This update will also change the Quest ability, which levels up your character depending on if you meet certain conditions.

The story for the Super Spooky Village Teppen expansion follows Ghosts 'n Goblins Arthur, who is going on a journey to save Princess Prin Prin after a cursed villager kidnaps her. In order to do so, he must defeat the four Noble Families. Felicia from Vampire Hunter 2: Darkstalkers’ Revenge will also play a role as a mischievous antagonist for the Noble Families. There is also a mysterious circus, which appears to be the Berry Big Circus from Ace Attorney.

In a crowded mobile market full of fleeting successes, Puzzle & Dragons has endured. Why? It’s because it’s more than a color-matching puzzle game. It offers team customization for interesting and varied strategies. Its enemies often force you to approach your matching differently. And perhaps most notably, it offers huge combos if you work hard enough for them!

It’s disappointing, then, to see just how much trouble the franchise has encountered adapting to a console market. Especially after multiple promising 3DS entries! But like Puzzle & Dragons Gold before it, Puzzle & Dragons Nintendo Switch Edition fully misunderstands its own appeal.

puzzle & dragons nintendo switch edition

Let’s start with that team-building. Crafting squads turns the game from a matching game that sort of plays itself into something more calculated! So… why take that out? That’s a weird move, huh? But Nintendo Switch Edition does just that, instead offering a pre-built team that gradually upgrades as you progress and additional pre-set teams through its gacha system. (Yep, gacha. We’ll get to that later.)

So your party has abilities you can’t choose, and the strategies are almost always to just match everything on the board and use every ability as soon as it charges. That combines with the combo problem! You see, since the super-long board manipulation timer lets you make that ideal basically every round, “success” comes from whatever luck you manage with new pieces dropping onto the screen.

And these systems would be tested better with a campaign that’s tuned more carefully. Sure, the enemy health and damage numbers go up as you play, but true challenge would come from curated enemy sequences that make you intentionally leave pieces on your board for later combos. But that doesn’t really happen! And again, any “strategy” you may have is regularly trampled by the damage numbers of the “just match everything” approach.

localize p&d x please

Along the way, you unlock a bunch of stuff. Stuff! People love it! Unfortunately, the regular visit to the Achievements menu to get songs and avatars and the occasional gacha pull (getting there) is rarely fruitful. Puzzle & Dragons Nintendo Switch Edition seems to boil the idea of mobile games’ appeal down to constant pop-ups. So after you don’t make any meaningful decisions for a few minutes, you get some notifications to clear.

And okay, let’s talk about the gacha. You can earn a few pulls through the campaign, and each one gets you an avatar with some sort of bonus item. It could be a song, a pre-made team or a set of equippable bonuses you can’t change or reconfigure. The teams are the obvious gets, since they offer something interesting to gameplay! Sort of. The idea that the avatars for a pre-made-team-only player-versus-player mode are the main attraction? That’s sort of a farce. But hey, nevertheless.

You can get more items from the gacha with... just straight up cash! The game doesn’t obscure these transactions with an in-game currency. You’d probably expect some business plan shenanigans with a sub-$5 game like this, but what’s here does not feel good.

puzzle & dragons nintendo switch edition

There are some efforts around the edges to improve the experience here. Multiplayer! Custom-made dungeons to share and play! And these ideas could be promising. But they're built around a faulty foundation, and these efforts don't really get a chance to prove themselves as part of this package.

This is a real shame for a franchise that was so promising just a few years ago. Puzzle & Dragons Z was a fun, engaging RPG built around the game’s mechanics, and the Japan-only Puzzle & Dragons X polished and added to these ideas to make one of the best titles on the platform. But those hoping for a similarly compelling Switch release will just have to keep waiting.

Puzzle & Dragons Nintendo Switch Edition is out now on, well, the Nintendo Switch.

And again, any “strategy” you may have is regularly trampled by the damage numbers of the “just match everything” approach. localize p&d x please Along the way, you unlock a bunch of stuff. You’d probably expect some business plan shenanigans with a sub-$5 game like this, but what’s here does not feel good. puzzle & dragons nintendo switch edition There are some efforts around the edges to improve the experience here.

Puzzle & Dragons Nintendo Switch Edition is the series' latest console game

The latest Famitsu issue featured coverage on Puzzle & Dragons to celebrate the mobile game's 10th anniversary and the new game that recently released on Nintendo Switch. It also included an interview with the series creator Daisuke Yamamoto and Gungho's CEO Kazuki Morishita. In this interview, the company's president expressed his interest in releasing more Puzzle & Dragons games for consoles on a global scale with a higher frequency. [Thanks, Ryokutya!]

Here are some of the highlights from the Puzzle & Dragons interview with Kazuki Morishita and Daisuke Yamamoto:

  • Morishita: "We will continue the mobile [game's] service from here on. As a short-term objective, we want to release Puzzle & Dragons games for home consoles in an even shorter span."
  • Yamamoto: "The number of monsters in Puzzle & Dragons may be the largest in the world." (strained laugh)
  • Morishita: "We want to release a lot of new Puzzle & Dragons games on a worldwide scale. There may also be a chance that it wouldn't be a puzzle game. Right now, We're the best in action games, so it may turn out to be an action game."

Puzzle & Dragons originated as a mobile game that first released on iOS devices in Japan on February 20, 2012. Gungho later launched the title on Android devices and Kindle Fire tablets as well. The franchise's first-ever console game release was Puzzle & Dragons Z, which came out for 3DS in Japan in 2013. Gungho also worked with Nintendo to release Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition in 2015. The company then released two versions of Puzzle & Dragons X in 2016. However, there was a large gap in new console game releases until the first Switch title -- Puzzle & Dragons Gold -- appeared in 2020.

The series' latest console game, Puzzle & Dragons Nintendo Switch Edition, released in North America on February 19, 2022, and Japan on February 20, 2022. The Japanese release date coincided with the franchise's 10th anniversary.

Puzzle & Dragons Nintendo Switch Edition Arrives This Week

The Nintendo Switch is getting a new Puzzle & Dragons called, appropriately enough, Puzzle & Dragons Nintendo Switch Edition. This will be a more direct adaptation of the original game. It will be playable both in handheld mode and docked. There will also be Quest, PvP, and Custom modes available.

The Quest Mode is typical Puzzle & Dragons fare. You create teams of monsters. You then take them through puzzles in 16 dungeons. If you have people on-hand nearby, one to three other people can you. The PVP mode features NPCs and real world people to fight. There are Friend and World match options here. As for the Custom mode, it will let people create a dungeon. You set up how they look and the monsters inside. In addition to making your own, you can challenge ones others’ created.

This is actually the second Puzzle & Dragons game to show up on the system. The first was Puzzle & Dragons Gold. Rather than a more direct adaptation of the original game, it is a more competitive one. It involved a campaign with two stories and preset teams and the option to create custom teams and play against others online.

Puzzle & Dragons Nintendo Switch Edition will come to the system on February 19, 2022. It will cost $4.37 on the eShop.
