There are new details about Dan Da Dan season 2, as GKids released a trailer ahead of the debut in movie theaters. In the US and Canada, we’ll get to see the show first on June 6, 2025, ahead of it streaming on services like Crunchyroll on July 3, 2025.

First, there’s the one and a half minute trailer for Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye, which is the name the first three season 2 episodes are being released under when those show up in movie theaters. The video begins with the yokai Evil Eye, the antagonist of this latest arc, announcing his intentions to assault humanity now that he found a body. However, Okarun is there and takes on the Turbo Granny form to fight back. From there, we get a hint at some of the fights Momo and Okarun face at the start of the new season.

Here’s the latest trailer:

The European debut is a day later on June 7, 2025.

Coincidentally, June also happens to be when the next volume of the Dan Da Dan manga will appear in English. Viz Media announced that volume 13 will launch on June 3 2025. Previously, volume 12 debuted on April 1, 2025.

Dan Da Dan season 2 will start on July 3, 2025, though the first three episodes will appear as Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye in movie theaters in North America on June 6, 2025. The manga is released outside Japan by Viz Media.

gkids colorful stage movie north american release

GKids Films announced that it acquired the distribution rights for the North American release of Colorful Stage The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing. The movie will appear in theaters in Canada and the United States on April 11, 2025.

Since the website for the movie didn’t mention if it’ll only be in select theaters, it’s likely that you’ll be able to catch it in most major ones. Regardless, if you’re unsure, GKids will probably release more information on it closer to April 11, 2025. You can also watch a trailer for the film on the official webpage for it.

Colorful Stage The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing first appeared in Japanese theaters in mid-January 2025. Though it stars familiar Vocaloid mascots, as a Colorful Stage movie, it mostly centers on the original characters for that game. Popular Vocaloid producers like Deco*27 (“Vampire”) and Jin (“Kagerou Daze”) worked on the opening and ending themes for the film, with music videos for them available on YouTube.

As for the story, it follows the tale of twenty teenagers who discover Sekai, which is an alternate world made from feelings. Vocaloids occupy these Sekais, and they help these teenagers with their self-discovery journeys. The plot of the movie focuses on Hatsune Miku trying to reach people with her songs, and the teenagers in question help her with this.

Key art for the film release of Gundam GQuuuuuux -Beginning-

Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuux -Beginning-, the theatrical cut of the first three episodes of Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuux, will be headed to theaters in North America on February 28, 2025. Animated film distributor GKids secured the license for the film cut of the new anime. GKids has not yet announced which theaters will be showing the film or when tickets will become available.

The film is a compilation movie of the first three episodes of the newest entry in the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuux (pronounced 'quarks'). The show is a first ever collaboration between Sunrise and Studio Khara, the Hideaki Anno-founded animation studio behind the Rebuild of Evangelion film series. It is set in an alternate Universal Century where Amuro Ray is not the one who finds the Gundam, but instead Char Aznable.

This film, and the first three episodes, center around Amate Yuzuriha, a young high-schooler living on the Side 6 space colony, who falls into illegal, underground Mobile Suit fighting. It was originally released in Japanese theaters on January 17, 2025.

The original three Gundam films were released in American theaters, showcasing the original adventure of Amuro Ray during the One Year War. In addition, it was recently revealed that Hololive Vtuber, Hoshimachi Suisei would be providing an insert song for the anime.

Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuux -Beginning- will hit theaters in North America on February 28, 2025 but no announcements for regions outside of North America have been made at this time.

The Boy and The Heron Can Feel New and Refreshing

How many times has Hayao Miyazaki come out of retirement now? I’ve lost count. But I am sure glad he did. I went to see the new Ghibli movie The Boy and the Heron this past weekend here in Japan. Do you your first Ghibli film? Mine was Kiki’s Delivery Service back in third grade. I don’t much about how I much liked it, but it remained with me for years until I rediscovered it and the rest of the Ghibli cata high school. As my first Ghibli movie, it remained high on my list of favorite movies from the studio, and now there’s a new addition with The Boy and the Heron.

Editor's Note: There will be no spoilers for The Boy and the Heron below. y5m2l

While The Boy and the Heron isn’t scheduled to release in the West until December 2023, I can’t wait for you all to get to see it. It feels like previous movies from Miyazaki, while bringing new energy as well. At just over two hours long, it introduces an uncharacteristically large cast of characters. Naturally, the protagonists are, well... the boy and the heron. The movie shares many themes and ideas from previous Miyazaki films, but spins them in a new and refreshing way.

Ghibli movies often dealt with the hardships and adventure of making sense of the world as a child. Miyazaki seems to have made it his life's work to keep children dreaming and imagining a world both different and so similar to ours. The Boy and the Heron deals with these same themes, but in different ways than before, and I believe achieves that quite well. It perfectly captures the feeling of being a child in a world you feel helpless to change or understand.

[caption id="attachment_983087" align="alignnone" width="1200"]The Boy and The Heron Can Feel New and Refreshing Image via Studio Ghibli and GKids[/caption]

The move is also, in ways I can’t quite explain without going into spoilers, a request for the viewers (specifically children) who might watch it. The Japanese version of the movie has the title “How Do You Live,” which is shared with a book by Yoshino Genzaburo. While the stories don’t seem to have too much overlap, the themes and ideas they want to express seem to be similar. So, if you’re finding it hard to wait for the English release, the book may give you at least a little taste of what the movie is about.

The visuals in The Boy and The Heron are also exactly what you expect from a Studio Ghibli film. The characters are all extremely believable in their facial expressions and all the backgrounds are beautiful and could be paintings hanging in an art museum themselves. While most of the movie is typical (and not ina bad way) Ghibli, the opening sequence is something else entirely. It was something I wasn’t expecting, but absolutely blew me away.

It’s hard for me to give a full review with absolutely no spoilers, but suffice to say that The Boy and The Heron is a movie worth seeing in theaters when it releases and has rocketed to a high place on my list of favorite Ghibli movies. Make sure and set aside a date in your calendar to catch this one in theaters in December! It’s so good!

The Boy and The Heron is set to release in theaters outside Japan on December 8, 2023. It is airing in Japan now as How Do You Live.

Studio Ghibli’s How Do You Live Movie Will Be The Boy in the Heron Outside Japan-044

Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki's new movie is called How Do You Live in Japan, but it will be The Boy and the Heron outside it. GKIDS announced it picked up the film. When it did, it revealed the new name for it. While it is airing now in theaters in Japan, it won't show up in North America until 2023.

Here's the official announcement. It doesn't note if there will be an English dub or who actors might be should one appear.

This initial reveal also didn't mention anything about a physical release yet. However, GKIDS is known for that. For example, it did so for the Studio Glibli movie Earwig and the Witch. Movies it handles also often show up on streaming services. That ended happening with films like Promare, which turned up on HBO Max. (That service is now just known as Max.)

This is the second reveal regarding the film today. The Japanese voice actors were also confirmed. There's also an icon appearing next to the hashtag "#君たちはどう生きるか" that resembles the heron on Twitter.

How Do You Live is airing in theaters in Japan now, but the Studio Ghibli movie will be known as The Boy and the Heron when it ends up appearing worldwide in North American theaters.

Evangelion 3.0+1.0 Heading to North American Theaters Blu-ray

People will have new ways to see the last Rebuild of Evangelion movie. GKids got the rights to it. This means that Evangelion 3.0+1.0 will appear in North American theaters and people could soon see things like a Blu-ray release or digital copies to buy. At the moment, it is available to stream on Amazon Prime. It should show up in movie theaters in places like the United States and Canada at the end of 2022.

GKids began by noting it had the "North American theatrical, home video, and EST rights." This would mean people will see Evangelion 3.0+1.0 on DVD, Blu-ray, and to purchase digitally alone on storefronts. In a follow-up tweet, it confirmed the "late 2022" launch window for the theatrical release.

It took quite a while for Evangelion 3.0+1.0 to release worldwide. The Japanese debut kept being delayed for production-related reasons and the due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It eventually ended up appearing in March 2021 in Japan. A worldwide release followed on Amazon Prime. It also made quite a bit of money when it released in Japan.

Evangelion 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time will head to North American theaters in late 2022, and home video DVD, blu-ray, and digital releases are on the way.

Evangelion Ultimate Edition

GKids' full Blu-ray collection of the original Neon Genesis Evangelion anime, the Evangelion Ultimate Edition, will return for pre-orders after the initial batch sold out. GKids Films announced via Twitter that a "very limited" number of pre-order units would be available starting on September 9, 2021 at 11am PT/2pm ET.

https://twitter.com/GKIDSfilms/status/1435349183913988099

The GKids Films Blu-ray release comes in multiple editions, including a Collector's, Standard, and Digital edition. Like all the others, Neon Genesis Evangelion Ultimate Edition will include the complete original TV series, as well as the two follow-up movie releases, Evangelion: Death (True)², and The End of Evangelion. However, the Ultimate Edition sets itself apart in of included physical bonuses, in addition to the eleven discs that contain the content.

The Evangelion Ultimate Edition set will include exclusive packaging and more than five hours of bonus features. The bonus features include commercials for the original releases of Neon Genesis Evangelion, Japanese voice auditions, animatics, and even deleted live-action scenes originally destined for The End of Evangelion. It will also have additional audio and subtitle tracks based on the original releases of the series and films. The default dub and subtitles are otherwise based on the new dub and translation commissioned when the series was acquired by Netflix. One thing that will be missing, however, is the song "Fly Me To The Moon", which played over the end credits of the TV show. Licensing issues prevented the song from appearing in international releases of the series. The set will have eight special art cards, but the Ultimate Edition also includes artwork based on the LaserDisc releases, a paperweight based on the 3rd Angel Sachiel, a NERV ID card and lanyard, art boards, as well as a 156-page book.

The Neon Genesis Evangelion Ultimate Edition will cost USD $274.99 to pre-order. The standard price is $349.99, and that will take effect when the set is released on December 8, 2021.  The current batch of pre-orders will become available on September 9, 2021, going live at 11am PT/2pm ET.

On January 4, 2021, GKIDS Films, a publishing house that frequently distributes Studio Ghibli projects, revealed a new lineup of six titles set to release on HBO Max this month. As of January 12, 2021 these titles, which include Promare, are now available to stream on the platform.

Two documentaries about Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki are available, as well. They are the 2013 film The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness and Never-Ending Man: Hayao Miyazaki. The last three titles rounding out the new selection are the animated features Weathering with You, Ride Your Wave, and The Night is Short, Walk on Girl.

The official Twitter for GKIDS Films went on to mention that Weathering With You on HBO Max has a “strange issue” with audio and subtitles. “Some s have said that by selecting the Spanish language option in the main film menu, you can access the Japanese language version with English subtitles,” said the company.

Studio Trigger’s Promare only recently became available in North America after two limited-run theatrical releases and its physical version’s debut. A collector’s edition that included a CD soundtrack, the film’s script, decals, and a poster was also released. Those interested in the anime who are looking to express their love for the series during Zoom meetings can also Promare backgrounds shared by the distributor near the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
