Leading up to the June 2025 launch of the Magic the Gathering Final Fantasy collection, Wizards of the Coast shared multiple cards from the crossover online and at events, and we have a look at a counterpart card of Ardyn Izunia from FFXV. It is a reskinned variant of Varragoth, Bloodsky Sire.

As this FFXV Magic the Gathering Ardyn Izunia card is a counterpart of Varragoth, Bloodsky Sire, it is functionally identical. He is a Legendary Creature - Demon Rogue. Its ability allows you to set up your next move by moving a card to the top of your deck.

Here’s a closer look at this Ardyn Izunia version of Varragoth, Bloodsky Sire:

This isn’t the first time a crossover version of Varragoth, Bloodsky Sire appeared. The Secret Lair x Chuck set of cards based on the Child’s Play series featured a reskin of it of Tiffany, Bride of Chucky.

We also know of other Ardyn Magic the Gathering FFXV cards in this Final Fantasy crossover collection. The Secret Lair x Final Fantasy: Game Over set includes one. That features him on Unseat the Usurper – Sorcery, which is a reskin of Praetor’s Grasp.

The Magic the Gathering Final Fantasy set will launch on June 27, 2025, and the official site for the cards is now open. Pre-releases happen on June 6, 2025. Orders for the three Secret Lair sets open at 9am PT/12pm ET on June 9, 2025.

3 Secret Lair Magic the Gathering Final Fantasy Drops Debut in June

Wizards of the Coast announced the Magic the Gathering Final Fantasy crossover will also include three Secret Lair drops of special cards. These will consist of three sets, each one consisting of five cards. The non-foil versions will be $29.99, while the rainbow foil ones will be $39.99. English and Japanese sets will be available. There will also be English and Japanese bundles for $199.99 each that consist of the non-foil and rainbow foil versions of each one. Sales will start via the official site at 9am PT/12pm ET on June 9, 2025. Standard cards and decks are available at stores like Amazon and Best Buy.

The three sets are Secret Lair x Final Fantasy: Game Over, Secret Lair x Final Fantasy: Grimoire, and Secret Lair x Final Fantasy: Weapons. Each of these includes five cards that are Final Fantasy takes on existing ones. Game Over is full of Sorcery cards that involve villains from the series, Grimoire is a mix of Instant and Sorcery abilities from heroes, and all of the Weapons ones involve Artifacts with series’ heroes wielding them.

Here are the full lists of each card in each set:

  • Secret Lair x Final Fantasy: Game Over
    • Final Fantasy VI Merciless Poisoning - Sorcery (Toxic Deluge)
    • Final Fantasy VII Meteorfall - Sorcery (Star of Extinction)
    • Final Fantasy VIII Absorb into Time - Sorcery (Temporal Extortion)
    • Final Fantasy X Spira’s Punishment - Sorcery (Day of Judgment)
    • Final Fantasy XV Unseat the Usurper - Sorcery (Praetor’s Grasp)

  • Secret Lair x Final Fantasy: Grimoire
    • Final Fantasy VII Aerith’s Curaga Magic - Instant (Heroic Intervention)
    • Final Fantasy IX Vivi’s Thunder Magic - Instant (Lightning Bolt)
    • Final Fantasy X Yuna’s Holy Magic - Sorcery (Prismatic Ending)
    • Final Fantasy XIII Hope’s Aero Magic - Instant (Cyclonic Rift)
    • Final Fantasy XV Noctis’ Death Magic - Sorcery (Damn)

  • Secret Lair x Final Fantasy: Weapons
    • Final Fantasy VII Cloud’s Buster Sword - Artifact (Umezawa’s Jitte)
    • Final Fantasy X Tidus’ Brotherhood Sword - Artifact (Sword of Truth and Justice)
    • Final Fantasy X Yuna’s Sending Staff - Artifact (Staff of the Storyteller)
    • Final Fantasy XIV Gaia’s Dark Hammer - Artifact (Colossus Hammer)
    • Final Fantasy XVI Clive’s Invictus Blade - Artifact (Blade of Selves)

And here’s a gallery I made showing how all of them look. The first row features the Game Over set. The second is Grimoire. The third is Weapons.

In addition to the bundles, there will be a promo card for these releases. It is a Gilded Lotus Artifact based on Aerith’s flower from FFVII. English and Japanese versions will be available. However, getting one isn’t guaranteed, as they’ll only be included with some of the bundles and, due to being limited, could run out.

Here’s how both of those look:

The Magic the Gathering Final Fantasy set will launch on June 27, 2025, and the official site for the cards is now open. Pre-releases happen on June 6, 2025. Orders for the three Secret Lair sets open at 9am PT/12pm ET on June 9, 2025.

Here Are All Magic the Gathering Final Fantasy PAX East Cards

At PAX East 2025, Wizards of the Coast unveiled an array of Magic the Gathering Final Fantasy cards and mechanics with folks like Ben Starr and Kenny Omega as special guests. These went over elements like Job Select, an ability on equipment to change roles, tiered spells, transforming double-faced cards like Kuja and Terra, and summons appearing as Saga Creatures. The presentation also confirmed that if you get a themed Magic Commander Deck, say like the one for Final Fantasy VI, it will pretty much only contain cards based on characters, enemies, and concepts from that installment. Magic the Gathering Magic Spotlight Final Fantasy Event Announced

Wizards of the Coast will bring the Magic Spotlight event to Japan in order to celebrate the Magic the Gathering Final Fantasy set of cards. The free-to-enter event will take place in Chiba, Japan, with people able to enter while there is space between June 27–29, 2025. This will happen the same month the crossover debuts. Registration begins on the official site at 8pm PT/11pm ET on April 16, 2025, which is 12pm JST on April 17, 2025, on a site that opens on April 15, 2025.

While details are still slim, Wizards of the Coast did confirm the Magic Spotlight: Final Fantasy event will include a two-day tournament that costs money to enter, a type of card as a prize, and “side events.” In the case of the match-up, the prize pool consists of $50,000. Everyone who pays to enter gets a “non-foil Japanese-language borderless promo card” of one of the Final Fantasy cards from the new set. Those in the top 128 each get one traditional foil version of that card. The top eight winners will be able to take part in Pro Tour Edge of Eternities. That will be held between September 26-28, 2025, with people needing to head to MagicCon in Atlanta, Georgia to compete.

As a reminder, this is one of many crossovers for Magic the Gathering. One involved Assassin’s Creed. Another featured Doctor Who. Lord of the Rings showed up too. Hatsune Miku and SpongeBob appeared on cards as well.

The Magic the Gathering Final Fantasy set will launch on June 13, 2025, and pre-orders are open

#SQkawaii Sounds - Final Fantasy - Soundtrack Is Energizing game songs music

For those of us who’ve followed Final Fantasy for years, Square Enix releasing remixes or new adaptations of songs from games’ soundtracks is nothing new. Piano covers. Chiptunes. Instrumentals. Rock arrangements. So, so many takes on the “Chocobo Theme.” #SQkawaii Sounds - Final Fantasy - is the latest endeavor, and this time it’s adapting music from every game in a way I can only describe as enthusiastic. Yes, there are sometimes slower pieces here. But in general, it’s a poppy, refreshing, energetic, and bright take on familiar themes.

First, what I appreciated going in to #SQkawaii Sounds - Final Fantasy - is that there’s a sense of balance. There isn’t an overwhelming number of tracks from any one game. Four are general staple songs that appear in every entry in some shape or form. In the case of the other 16, there’s a track from all mainline installments. It feels like proper representation, especially since FFXI gets a nod and the company even included FFXVI

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXSaSe1WECg

Honestly, another point in #SQkawaii Sounds - Final Fantasy -’s favor is that it doesn’t just pull the most popular or recognizable track from each game for this soundtrack. Instead, you can tell Square Enix put a lot of thought into selecting music that would fit the theme well or sound good with arcade-like or chiptune-esque takes. “The Chase” from FFVII is a fantastic example, as it ended up sounding like something I’d want to listen to while playing Super Hang-On or Daytona USA. “Vamo'alla flamenco” is another that comes to mind. The rhythms still have the “flamenco” and “Spanish” themes at part, but it’s far more synthesized and electronic in this take. It suits it in a way I didn’t expect and became a standout track on the album for me.

When it comes to those songs that are defining pieces of memorable Final Fantasy series entries, I found #SQkawaii Sounds - Final Fantasy - makes them song fresh. I mean that both literally and figuratively. Everything about the execution adjusts it. The pacing, the direction, the instrumentation, and even the atmosphere can feel a bit different. “Zanarkand” is more bubbly and energetic, something you wouldn’t expect from the FFX track. Blinded by Light comes across as even more futuristic in this adaptation, and I even got some cyberpunk vibes from the FFXIII song. I always thought “Find the Flame” was one of the best pieces from FFXVI, and this version feels like stepping into a fairy ring as a pastel dawn is turning into the day and you’re all energized, ready to go.

For reference, here is the full track listing of songs from the #SQkawaii Sounds - Final Fantasy - soundtrack.

  1. "Prelude" (Final Fantasy)
  2. "Opening Theme" (Final Fantasy)
  3. "Castle Cornelia" (Final Fantasy I)
  4. "The Rebel Army" (Final Fantasy II)
  5. "Chocobo Theme" (Final Fantasy)
  6. "Eternal Wind" (Final Fantasy III)
  7. "Battle 2" (Final Fantasy IV)
  8. "Battle at the Big Bridge" (Final Fantasy V)
  9. "Moogles' Theme" (Final Fantasy)
  10. "Terra's Theme" (Final Fantasy VI)
  11. "The Chase" (Final Fantasy VII)
  12. "The Man with the Machine Gun" (Final Fantasy VIII)
  13. "Vamo'alla flamenco" (Final Fantasy IX)
  14. "Zanarkand" (Final Fantasy X)
  15. "Battle Theme" (Final Fantasy XI)
  16. "Streets of Rabanastre" (Final Fantasy XII)
  17. "Blinded By Light" (Final Fantasy XIII)
  18. "Endwalker" (Final Fantasy XIV)
  19. "Somnus (Instrumental Version)" (Final Fantasy XV)
  20. "Find the Flame" (Final Fantasy XVI)

Listening to #SQkawaii Sounds - Final Fantasy - is like hearing incredibly familiar songs from the games’ soundtracks on a sunny, bright day where everything is potentially going right. Given the execution, the actual “feel” of them can vary. Some would feel in place in an arcade, while others might occasionally have an ethereal, outdoor fantasy feel. The energy and approach is great, and it’s a fun listen as a whole or with some of the pieces added to other playlists.

The #SQkawaii Sounds - Final Fantasy - soundtrack is available now both digitally and physically.

1 Hour of Soothing Final Fantasy Piano Collection Music Shared

Square Enix regularly releases videos of music from its various soundtrack albums on YouTube in various forms, and its latest is “1 hour of Calm Music - Final Fantasy x Piano Collection Vol. 2 w/SE.” It dropped the video, which actually is just over 56 minutes long, on its official channel on March 18, 2025. It pulls tracks from the Piano Collection albums with covers from mainline entries.

While the didn’t list exactly which tracks appear in the video, the image projected on the sheet beside the campfire in the footage does highlight which album the song is pulled from. So the very first song in the latest Square Enix Music video comes from Piano Collections Final Fantasy X. That’s followed by music from the Final Fantasy VII album in that series. The third featured album is based on the Final Fantasy XIII soundtrack. From there, Piano Collections Final Fantasy VI, Piano Collections Final Fantasy IV, Piano Collections Final Fantasy XV, Piano Collections Final Fantasy XIV, and Piano Collections Final Fantasy XII show up. It wraps up with selections from Final Fantasy XI, IX, Crystal Chronicles, V, and VIII. While music plays, the Moogle and Chocobo mascots will visit and stop by.

Here’s the full “1 hour of Calm Music - Final Fantasy x Piano Collection Vol. 2 w/SE.”

This is the second video in this series to appear. The first launched in October 2023. That also featured tracks from the various Piano Collections albums. However, it was a bit more organized, as the YouTube video actually listed every song and included timestamp links to jump to ones someone might want to hear. It was also a bit longer, as it lasted about 91 minutes.

You can catch up with those songs below:

The most recent piano cover album launched in January 2025. Crystalline Resonance - Final Fantasy Piano Collection debuted at the start of the year. It focused on songs recorded during concert performances.

#SQkawaii Sounds Final Fantasy Soundtrack Wallpaper, Songs Shared aerith tifa 2

Way back in November 2024, Square Enix shared it would release an #SQkawaii Sounds Final Fantasy soundtrack with new versions of existing songs from the series’ soundtracks, and now there’s a promotional video and Aerith and Tifa wallpaper to promote it. We can also already buy or listen to five songs from the album on various services.

First, here are the five songs you can listen to on services like Spotify or buy from storefronts like Amazon. All of them are remixes from classic songs taken from early games. They cost $1.29 each if you buy them separately, while the full digital album is $17.98. A physical copy of the CD is $29.99.

  • “Castle Cornelia #SQkawaii Sounds” from Final Fantasy
  • “Battle at the Big Bridge #SQkawaii Sounds” from Final Fantasy V
  • “Moogles’ Theme #SQkawaii Sounds” from Final Fantasy series
  • “Streets of Rabanastre #SQkawaii Sounds” from Final Fantasy XII
  • “Find the Flame #SQkawaii Sounds” from Final Fantasy XVI

All of these songs can also be heard in the latest music video. Square Enix added direct links to each track in the description on YouTube. While the “Moogles’ Theme” is more of a generic piece based on all the theme songs for the mascots, the others are more specific. They also show that all entries are represented, as the songs range from the original Final Fantasy to thetheme “Find the Flame” from the 2023 release FFXVI.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXSaSe1WECg

As for the official #SQkawaii Sounds Final Fantasy soundtrack, it’s one starring Aerith and Tifa from FFVII. It’s designed to be used on mobile devices. It essentially isolates part of the cover art from the game and removes text to show the two heroines in school uniforms in front of a grabbing machine. The one track from that game on the album is “The Chase.”

Here’s how that #SQkawaii Sounds Final Fantasy Aerith and Tifa wallpaper looks:

The #SQkawaii Sounds Final Fantasy soundtrack will launch on March 5, 2025 digitally, as well as ship out that month.

Magic the Gathering Final Fantasy Decks and Cards Briefly Appeared at Best Buy

As pointed out by Wario64 online, Best Buy briefly put up product pages for the Magic the Gathering Final Fantasy decks and booster packs of cards. However, all of the listings are now gone, with only the $19.99 Starter Kit with Cloud and Sephiroth from FFVII showing up in search at the store. This set will roll out on June 13, 2025. While the listings are gone, this does mean we know what the product images for the items look like. [Thanks, Wario64!]

The four Magic the Gathering Final Fantasy Commander Decks we already knew about involve Cloud from FFVII, Y’shtola from FFXIV, Tidus from FFX, and Terra from FFVI. The boxes from those each show how one card looks on the front, confirms there will be legendary traditional foils inside, and notes a Collector Booster Sample Pack will be in the box. So with the Terra one, you get Terra, Herald of Hope, a Legendary Creature Human Wizard Warrior. Tidus, Yuna’s Guardian, a Legendary Creature Human Warrior is in the FFX box. The Legendary Creature Human Soldier Mercenary Cloud, Ex-SOLDIER card is in the FFVII deck. Meanwhile, Legendary Creature Cat Warlock Y’shtola, Night’s Blessed is in the FFXIV one.

Two of the more expensive items will be the Collector Booster and Collector Boosters box. The boosters packs will feature Terra from FFVI on them and may have a serialized card. The Collector Booster has Kefka from FFVI on it may also include a serialized card, but is guaranteed to come with 15 foil and rare cards. People can buy a booster box of 30 standard packs at launch, as well as the aforementioned starter kit with Cloud and Sephiroth decks.

Here are the official product images for all of the items confirmed so far:

The last time we got to see some art for the cards was back in October 2024.

Wizards of the Coast also confirmed that Yoshitaka Amano, who is known for his Final Fantasy art, worked on some of the cards in this set.

The Magic the Gathering Final Fantasy cards will debut on June 13, 2025.

Final Fantasy Pouches Turn a Chocobo and Moogle Into a Coin Purse

Square Enix is now selling two coin purse designs based on the Final Fantasy Chocobo and Moogle mascots, with a mini keychain pouch available for each character. Orders are open at the official store for $21.99 each. Both are expected to ship in August 2025. They’ll launch in Japan on May 24, 2025

Both of these pouches are about two and a half inches long and an inch and a half wide. A small zipper at the top is used for opening and closing it, and there is a charm with the sound the character makes on it as a zipper pull. So the Chocobo’s says “kue,” while the Moogle’s reads, “kupo.” The Moogle one is slightly taller at about three and a half inches tall, but that’s due to the pom pom at the top of its head. Both items are made of silicone, and they can be wiped clean if they get dirty.

Here are the official photos for each of the items. In both cases, Square Enix offered a sense of scale by showing the pouches alongside things they are capable of holding. So we can see each one holding medicine in one photo, and in another there is an earphone case next to it.

It is very common for Square Enix to release generic Final Fantasy “cute” merchandise with a Chocobo and Moogle as the stars. For example, plush toys of both types of mascots often appear.

The Final Fantasy Chocobo and Moogle mini pouch coin purse keychains will launch in August 2025 worldwide, following a May 24, 2025 Japanese debut.

Kingdom Hearts 4 Will Move the Series Towards Its Ending

Kingdom Hearts 4 is in such a interesting place for the beloved Disney and Square Enix collaboration series. With Kingdom Hearts 3 concluding many of the major storylines brewing since the first title’s release on PlayStation 2 in 2002, the door is now open for so many possibilities. If there is one element that has to happen, though, it is the return of Final Fantasy to Kingdom Hearts 4.

One of the most impressive parts about the original Kingdom Hearts was its brilliant mix of Final Fantasy and Disney characters. You had characters like Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII in the same game as Aladdin and Hercules. It was such a fascinating and bizarre mix that it is honestly surprising how well it worked for all companies involved.

Ever since the original game, Final Fantasy has been a crucial part of Sora, Riku, and Kairi’s journey. These characters often play significant roles in the plot or even participate in some of the most challenging side content (see Cloud and Sephiroth).

In fact, we even saw expansions of Square Enix characters in later games. There were the likes of The World Ends With You characters in Dream Drop Distance, for instance. There is no denying the importance of Square Enix’s JRPG properties when it comes to Kingdom Hearts, especially since this is Tetsuya Nomura’s baby and he is one of the visionaries behind FFVII and other titles in the first place.

Unfortunately, there is a bit of a problem with Final Fantasy in Kingdom Hearts. The third entry in the series came out in 2019 and essentially did away completely with Final Fantasy. You didn’t see major characters from that other Square Enix appear here and the references were almost nonexistent outside of Moogles and the names of spells.

This was a major departure from past titles, focusing solely on Sora’s story and the Disney worlds. You could argue this was because of the conclusive nature of this particular title. In some ways, you could say the game didn’t have enough time for Square Enix crossovers. To that, I say I understand but it feels a bit like an excuse. It is honestly a shame Square Enix made this awkward decision.

Fortunately, the series is not over yet. Kingdom Hearts 4 presents the opportunity for Final Fantasy to return and cross over in the franchise again. This actually seems quite likely given Sora’s sudden appearance in a new world. He is without his usual companions, so he will need some backup. I could see this happen in a number of ways, including bringing in some classic characters.

It would be fascinating to see Sora make quick allies with someone like Clive from Final Fantasy XVI. The two could team up together and bond over their shared experience of waking in a strange new land. This could even allow the series to mix in a villain from another Square Enix title, such as the wonderful Emet-Selch from FFXIV or Ardyn from Final Fantasy XV. This would create some fascinating interactions we haven’t seen yet.

But the Final Fantasy cameos shouldn’t stop there in Kingdom Hearts 4. It should go beyond the main storyline and offer some deep side content as well, similar to the Colosseum. Perhaps there could be a Gold Saucer-like world for players to hang out in, play minigames, and battle in an arena. This would fit well with the current Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy.

Regardless of how it happens, Final Fantasy needs to return to Kingdom Hearts 4. While I enjoyed Kingdom Hearts 3, it always felt like it was missing its roots and this glaring omission stands out. Square Enix and Tetsuya Nomura have the chance to fix this problem by bringing Final Fantasy and Sora back together.

Kingdom Hearts 4 will release sometime in the future for undisclosed platforms.

final fantasy soundtracks steam

Square Enix has ed 35 new Final Fantasy soundtracks onto Steam. All of them are available with a 20% discount at the moment.

It added all these soundtracks on January 22, 2025. Right now, you can purchase the OSTs for virtually all of the main Final Fantasy titles, including the expansion packs in Final Fantasy XIV. This includes the games from the Pixel Remaster series, all the Final Fantasy XIII games, and the “From Spire to Sea” DLC for Final Fantasy XVI. For some reason, it doesn’t have the OST for Final Fantasy X-2,  and it’s not bundled with the Final Fantasy X soundtrack, either. The only non-Final Fantasy soundtrack Square Enix offers via Steam is the Balan Wonderworld one, and it’s not on promotion at the moment.

There’s no pack that will offer multiple soundtracks, so you’ll need to purchase them individually. While each soundtrack technically counts as DLC for whatever Final Fantasy game they belong to, you don’t actually need to have the game to buy the soundtrack. As a note, while some re-releases of older Final Fantasy games remix or alter the music, the ones you can purchase from Square Enix Music are the original versions from the initial releases.

The latest mainline entry in the Final Fantasy franchise, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, is readily available on the PS5 and Windows PC.
