Leading up to the June 2025 launch of the Magic the Gathering Final Fantasy collection, Wizards of the Coast shared multiple cards from the crossover online and at events, and we have a look at a counterpart card of Ardyn Izunia from FFXV. It is a reskinned variant of Varragoth, Bloodsky Sire.

As this FFXV Magic the Gathering Ardyn Izunia card is a counterpart of Varragoth, Bloodsky Sire, it is functionally identical. He is a Legendary Creature - Demon Rogue. Its ability allows you to set up your next move by moving a card to the top of your deck.

Here’s a closer look at this Ardyn Izunia version of Varragoth, Bloodsky Sire:

This isn’t the first time a crossover version of Varragoth, Bloodsky Sire appeared. The Secret Lair x Chuck set of cards based on the Child’s Play series featured a reskin of it of Tiffany, Bride of Chucky.

We also know of other Ardyn Magic the Gathering FFXV cards in this Final Fantasy crossover collection. The Secret Lair x Final Fantasy: Game Over set includes one. That features him on Unseat the Usurper – Sorcery, which is a reskin of Praetor’s Grasp.

The Magic the Gathering Final Fantasy set will launch on June 27, 2025, and the official site for the cards is now open. Pre-releases happen on June 6, 2025. Orders for the three Secret Lair sets open at 9am PT/12pm ET on June 9, 2025.

Hajime Tabata Recalls FFXV Release Date Choice and Delay

In a recent DenFamiNico Gamer interview between Final Fantasy XV Director and Producer Hajime Tabata and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Director Guillaume Broche, Tabata talked about his experience determining the release date for FFXV, and the troubles that arose from the delay of such a large scale game. [Thanks, DenFamiNico Gamer!]

For the last section of the interview, Broche was asked if there was anything in particular that he wanted to ask to Tabata. In response, Broche asked if there was anything Tabata could say now, perhaps alluding to the Japanese developer not being with Square Enix anymore and being able to talk more about his experience with the company and games like FFXV.

Tabata explained that Square Enix was the type of company that fully trusted him at the time he was put in charge of Final Fantasy. As an example, Tabata said that the general deadline for FFXV was obviously set in advance. However, other specific details on the release such as the launch month and schedule adjustments were all left to him, with a considerably degree of freedom.

The interviewer at DenFamiNico Gamer noted that this is a very rare occurrence, to which Tabata added that he still communicated with various departments. Furthermore, Tabata originally settled on a September 2016 release date for FFXV. “However, a month after making the decision I was holding my head in my hands. I kept thinking ‘I messed up...’ (laughs),” Tabata said.

A delay by the team eventually pushed the FFXV release date to November 29, 2016. Tabata also added that "when you delay the release date of a major release such as FFXV, it causes plenty of trouble. It was the biggest mistake of all (laughs)." Tabata concluded the anecdote by saying that it was a very valuable experience, in spite of the mistakes.

Final Fantasy XV is readily available for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam.

FFXII Fran, FFXIII Lightning, and FFXV Noctis Figures on the Way

At Wonder Festival 2025 Winter, Good Smile Company shared details about three Final Fantasy scale figures of Fran from FFXII, Claire “Lightning” Farron from FFXIII, and Noctis Lucis Caelum. from FFXV. The three are at different stages of development, which means we’ll see likely see Lightning or Noctis appear first.

The three characters appeared as separate updates. In the case of Lightning, a painted prototype of the character appeared. She’s standing with her back facing toward the viewer and turning around to look at them. She’s holding a gunblade at her side, out of its holster. It appears to be the Blazefire Saber model.

Likewise, Noctis is at the painted prototype phase of development as well. He’s depicted as he appears at the outset of FFXV. He’s wielding his signature Engine Blade sword in the design.

In the case of Fran, we only have a piece of concept art. This suggests a possible pose for the final figure. She’s wearing her attire from FFXII. If the image is accurate, than she may be wielding the Shortbow from the game in the final product.

Here are the photos and concept art for the FFXII Fran, FFXIII Lightning, and FFXV Noctics Final Fantasy figures so far:

There’s no release window for the FFXII Fran, FFXIII Lightning, and FFXV Noctics Final Fantasy figures yet, but we’ll likely see Lightning or Noctis first since those prototypes were painted ones. This could mean pre-orders will open in the next few weeks. You can get FFXII on the PS2, PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and PC. FFXIII is available on the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC, as are FFXIII-2 and Lightning Returns: FFXIII. FFXV is now on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and the Pocket Edition version is on those platforms, the Switch, and mobile devices.

We’ll Get a FFXV Noctis Play Arts Shin Figure

Square Enix announced the next Play Arts Shin figure, and it will be Noctis Lucis Caelum from Final Fantasy XV, marking the second FFXV figure reveal for the character in 2024. The social media reveal consisted of a single photo and a tease suggesting what we can expect from him.

The Noctis figure will feature him with his younger look. We also know that he’ll come with his Engine Blade as an accessory. There’s no release window yet.

Here’s the official post showing he’s on the way:

https://twitter.com/SQEX_MD_GOODS/status/1871118560673800694

Square Enix already revealed the first Play Arts Shin figure back in November 2024. It teased that the FFVII Rebirth version of Vincent Valentine would be the initial character to lead the lineup. That was fully revealed in December 2024 and assigned a November 2025 launch window.

Based on what we know about the Vincent Play Arts Shin figure, we can determine some possible details about the FFXV Noctis one. The first one costs 23,100 yen  in Japan and $199.99 worldwide. Square Enix also opened pre-orders in both storefronts near simultaneously, guaranteeing we’ll see characters in this collection globally. Since Vincent included accessories like weapons, additional face plates, and extra hand parts, we can expect that for Noctis too.

Final Fantasy XV is available on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The FFXV Play Arts Shin Noctis figure is in development.

Final Fantasy XV Event Returns to FFXIV With Regalia Mount

It’s been a while, but the Final Fantasy XV A Nocturne of Heroes event will return to Final Fantasy XIV, giving FFXIV players access to the FFXV Regalia Type-G mount, Noctis-themed equipment, and other items again. When it returns on February 28, 2024, it will mark the third time the event appeared in the game.

As this is a returning event, people may have already started or completed everything. If you already did it, you can find everything in Seasonal Event Replay. If you haven’t, you can pick up where you left off. To start A Nocturne of Heroes, you need to head to Ul’dah, Steps of Nald, at X: 8.5, Y: 9.7. There you’ll find Kipih Jakkya, if you never began the questline and meet requirements. You need to have beaten the 2.0 quest “The Ultimate Weapon” and hit level 50 with your character if you want to begin. Doing so will start a quest called “The Man in Black,” and completing that will lead into the follow-up quests “In the Dark of Night” and “Messenger of the Winds.”

Lots of crossover items and rewards are coming up with it, and here’s the list of things you can get:

  • “Apocalypsis Noctis” Orchestrion Roll
  • “Hammerhead” Orchestrion Roll
  • Lucian Prince’s Bottoms
  • Lucian Prince’s Boots
  • Lucian Prince’s Fingerless Glove

In Theatrhythm Final Bar Line various Final Fantasy characters appear, and one of the newly created ones for this installment is FFXV's Ardyn. To explain how he was recreated to fit with the spin-offs designs, Character Designer Monster Octopus went over the process. This also involved a look at some design documents to show the art for Ardyn and how Indieszero based the in-game look on the concept art.

Here’s what Monster Octopus said about making a more diminutive, yet still recognizable, version of Final Fantasy XV character Ardyn for Theatrhythm Final Bar Line.

Of all the enemy characters that I designed for this game, the one I have the fondest memories of working on was Ardyn.

When I started working on him, it was hard to figure out how his complex clothing was constructed. I really wondered how indieszero would split the design up to move freely. The other thing was the sheer number of weapons he used with his Armiger power! It was quite a headache and I spent time mulling over how to approach these.

If I added too much detail in how the weapons were drawn then it would overload the player with too much visual information and also get in the way of Ardyn himself, but at the same time I didn’t want to make them too simplistic. I also had to make subtle tweaks to work out how best to express Ardyn’s mysterious side.

To compare, this is how Ardyn looked in Final Fantasy XV.

The FFX mouse mat features a scene of Yuna and Tidus sharing a moment in the water. The FFXIII mat shows Lightning riding Odin in Gestalt mode. The FFXV mat shows a picture of Noctis and Lunafreya.

Two other Final Fantasy mats show off 2D artwork instead of the 3D images. The FFXII mat shows off Yoshitaka Amano-drawn concept art of the Archadian Judges Gabranth, Drace, Ghis, Bergan, and Zargabaath. The FFIX mat centers an illustration of Freya and Vivi.

best photo modes animal crossing

With the release of New Pokemon Snap, the Siliconera staff has been revisiting and appreciating our favorite photo modes in games. Here are our top picks!

I love staging Animal Crossing: New Horizons screenshots. Even if some of them look pretty similar to ones I've already taken. I mean, doesn't everyone need five pictures of Marshal singing in front of town hall while wearing his little default vest? Of course they do.

I suppose it almost feels like capturing photos with friends. when I forced Stitches to wear a weird hat and a terrible shirt? I do, because I took like ten pictures of him in that outfit. It's comforting. — Jenni

best photo modes red dead redemption 2

When I think of photo modes, Red Dead Redemption 2 immediately comes to mind. While it doesn't boast a wide array of filters or a greater range of options in comparison to games like Final Fantasy XIV (or other games that boast hefty photo modes), Red Dead Redemption 2's is simple and effective. It is able to perfectly frame the environments and animals to create beautiful wildlife photography. — Kazuma

final fantasy xv

Compared to later games such as Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Final Fantasy XV's options for filters and poses are limited. However, its implementation in the main story makes it feel more like there’s a purpose for it. While games like Like a Dragon or Kingdom Hearts III can be played without touching a photo mode, Final Fantasy XV weaves its into the narrative of Noctis’s journey. That makes it all the more memorable. — Stephanie

best photo modes super smash bros ultimate

I won't pretend to be any good at Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. But it doesn't take master reflexes to have a lot of fun taking screenshots! It's not the most robust out there, but the combination of franchises and the increasingly-expressive facial animations mean you can usually find something that'll amuse you. And as much as we like to pretend others care about the shots we take? Most photo modes are really just for yourself. — Graham

final fantasy xiv

I'm not much of a photographer, in games or real life. But I do like a good posing engine! As commercial games go, Final Fantasy XIV's "/gpose" command is quite robust. It's not the best in of being able to get the framing you want, but the ability to start and stop a whole range of FFXIV's bespoke animations makes it great for capturing that one good frame to really convey your character's coolness. Expert "Gposer" screenshots have done great things for FFXIV's marketing as an avenue for expressing your fashion sense. — Josh
