In an interview with Yoji Fujito, the producer and director of Final Fantasy XI, he reveals that Square Enix almost shifted the game into Maintenance Mode back in 2024 had fan reception to the game not been so positive. That meant that the team would have stopped rolling out updates and simply focused on maintaining servers. [Thanks, Dengeki Online!]

According to Fujito, Square Enix considered putting the game into Maintenance Mode and ending service in 2024 after The Voracious Resurgence. However, fans from all over the world ed Square Enix through various methods during the 20th anniversary to talk about how much they wanted service to continue, as well as how ending the game would destroy this routine they’ve established since the game came out over two decades ago. Because of the fans’ , they’ve decided to keep the game going who replacing the older servers with newer ones.

After discussions with Akihiko Matsui, a director and producer for Final Fantasy XI, the team decided to see how the game did after The Voracious Resurgence to decide if they would continue it. Because of the game’s continued popularity, Square Enix decided it wouldn’t end it just yet.

Final Fantasy XI came out in 2002 for the PS2 and Windows PC. Many people, including those who started playing earlier in the game’s lifetime, have since made it part of their daily routine. Despite its age, Square Enix is still adding onto it in the form of story expansions and new mechanics, such as an paid character race change service.

Final Fantasy XI is available on Windows PC.

Paid FFXI Character Race Change Service Coming

Square Enix shared an update video for Final Fantasy XI that goes over changes coming to the MMORPG in 2025, in honor of its anniversary, and a Character Race Change Service, which will cost money, and Alter Ego additions are on the way. There are no exact dates for when these might appear.

We first learned Square Enix would work on a Character Race Change Service during the 68th Freshly Picked Vana’diel FFXI presentation that aired in May 2024. At the time, there was no video footage of it. The latest update video brings it up at the 2:24 mark. We see a person who is a Galka in front of a Moogle. It then shifts to a menu where we see two copies of the avatar in front of us. A menu at the bottom offers an option to change the race and gender. Hume (Male), Hume (Female), Elvaan (Male), Elvaan (Female), Tarutaru (Male), Tarutaru (Female), Mithra, and Galka show as options. (Next to the Galka one, there is a note saying this was the “race before change.”) The example then switches to a Tarutaru (Female). After choosing a new species, a person can choose a face type, hair color, and character size. When in this screen, someone can also shift the camera to see the new version of the avatar compared to the old one from different angles.

Here’s how that looks. The video notes also mentioned a character’s base stats change in FFXI if you pay to use Character Race Change Service.

As for the Alter Ego additions in FFXI, Producer and Director

Yoji Fujito mentioned two changes. One is that there will be ways to get them. He also noted that players will be told more about it.

Final Fantasy XI is available for PCs.

FFXI Return to Vana’diel Free Gameplay Period Returns

Square Enix again confirmed that it will hold the Final Fantasy XI Return to Vana’diel free event and Discount Campaign for the game and its expansion for new and old FFXI players in May 2025. This year, things kick off on May 16, 2025. The free part will last for over a week and end on May 26, 2025, which is Memorial Day in the US. Meanwhile, the sale on the MMORPG and certain elements will last until May 30, 2025.

As usual, there are three criteria we must meet in order to get to play FFXI for free during the Return to Vana’diel campaign. A big one is that the PlayOnline needed to switch over to a Square Enix . You also need to have had an active FFXI service that could be used to play the MMORPG. Finally, and this is a rather obvious one, we can’t be an active player if we want to participate. This is the opportunity for people to come back, so you must be currently “cancelled” as of May 13, 2025. This means that as long as you aren’t subscribing by that day.

This is the first Return to Vana’diel FFXI campaign of 2025, but it hasn’t been that long since Square Enix held one. The event appeared in December 2024. Over the winter holiday season, the promotion that allowed people to return and get the game for a lower price showed up too. It also appeared in August 2024 and May 2024. This means we could see it return again two more times in 2025 too.

As for the discounts, here is a list of the specific Square Enix sales that will run during the May 2025 event.

  • FFXI Seekers of Adoulin Expansion - $4.99 instead of $9.99.
  • FFXI Ultimate Collection Seekers Edition - $9.99 instead of $29.99.
  • FFXI World Transfer Service - $9 instead of $18.

Final Fantasy XI is available for PCs, and the Return to Vana’diel free event and Discount Campaign will be back for potential FFXI players on May 16, 2025.

Final Fantasy XI Feast of Swords Returns in April

Square Enix announced the next Final Fantasy XI event is the Feast of Swords, and it seems like the 2025 edition may be identical to past iterations of the FFXI seasonal activity. It always happens around the second half of April and beginning of May, starting from its 2005 debut. This time, we can take part between April 22, 2025 and May 10, 2025.

To start the Feast of Swords, you need to talk to a Moogle in one of six locations to get an Ibushi Shinai. Here are the spots where you’ll find them:

  • Bastok Markets (G-8)
  • Bastok Mines (H-9)
  • Northern San d’Oria (D-8)
  • Southern San d’Oria (J-9)
  • Windurst Waters (F-5)
  • Windurst Woods (K-10)

Once you have that sword, you need to visit another Moogle to imbue it with magic so you can fight the armor enemies, such as the Omodaka Armor, and earn points for your assault. To start that second portion and enter into the fight, you need to go to one of the NPC mascots at the places below:

  • Batallia Downs (K-8)
  • East Ronfaure (G-6)
  • East Sarutabaruta (G-11)
  • Jugner Forest (I-8)
  • Konschtat Highlands (I-6)
  • La Theine Plateau (J-8)
  • Meriphataud Mountains (E-5)
  • North Gustaberg (L-8)
  • Pashhow Marshlands (K-6)
  • Rolanberry Fields (K-5)
  • Sauromugue Champaign (E-5)
  • South Gustaberg (L-8)
  • Tahrongi Canyon (I-6)
  • West Ronfaure (I-6)
  • West Sarutabaruta (J-8)

As in the past, after beating the enemies, you need to trade your points to the character remaining with a “???” overhead. You’ll then get a reward.

The announcement didn’t specify which rewards will be part of the 2025 Feast of Swords event in Final Fantasy XI. However, if it follows past patterns, we have an idea of what it might involve. In the past, the amount of points earned would sometimes influence what we’d get. So some of the lower-rank items would be Elvaan, Galka, Hume, or Tarutaru Mochi. Some of the better rewards in the past included a Shobuhouou Kabuto, Hardwood Katana, and Katana-kazari.

Final Fantasy XI is available on PCs, and the Feast of Swords event runs in FFXI between April 22, 2025 and May 10, 2025. Other updates, including new single-player options, are planned for the game for 2025.

FFXI Doll Festival event 2025

Hinamatsuri is being celebrated in Final Fantasy XI again, and the 2025 The Doll Festival reward is the same one from the 2024 version of the FFXI event. Things kick off on February 28, 2025. They’ll last over the actual Hinamatsuri festival, which happens on March 3, 2025.

The event works much like it has during past iterations. You’ll be able to visit Moogles in six spots, and they’ll appear alongside doll displays for the event. If you talk to them, you can get items like the Set of Festival Dolls furnishing you can place in your home. This is the only time you can get this item.

Here’s where those Moogles are:

  • Bastok Markets (G-8)
  • Bastok Mines (I-9)
  • Northern San d’Oria (D-8)
  • Southern San d’Oria (J-9)
  • Windurst Waters (F-5)
  • Windurst Woods (K-10)

This isn’t the only Final Fantasy MMO celebrating the Japanese holiday. It’s happening in FFXIV too. However, that game isn’t rerunning the event and same old reward. In 2025, the bonus in that game is a princely suit of armor, and past items will be available in-game or via the online store.

Final Fantasy XI is available for the PC. The Doll Festival event will run in FFXI this year until March 20, 2024.

Interview: Learning About the FFXIV Echoes of Vana’diel FFXI Raid

When the 7.1 FFXIV patch dropped it included an Echoes of Vana’diel Alliance Raid inspired by FFXI, bringing the two Final Fantasy MMORPG entries together. Now, there’s even an Echoes of Vana’diel subscription sale to make it easier for people to get back into the older of the two titles. To learn more about what went into this crossover, Siliconera spoke to Lead Battle Content Designer Masaki Nakagawa and Art Team Lead Yusuke Mogi about preparing for this new addition.

Jenni Lada: When did work start on the FFXIV Echoes of Vana'diel FFXI Raid? How involved were of the FFXI development team with the FFXIV Echoes of Vana'diel Raid?

Masaki Nakagawa (with input from the Scenario Team): We began planning Echoes of Vana'diel (EOV) around winter of 2023, in tandem with the development of Dawntrail. Those of us in the Battle Content team began the project by first deciding the four bosses so the Scenario team could concentrate on their tasks for Dawntrail. Once they were decided, we then moved on to deg the overall dungeon and outlining the story.

The FFXI team’s primary role was supervision of the original concept, plot, and in-game text of the scenario, along with voices and dialogue of NPCs and boss characters. We also asked them to provide the final assessment in ensuring the overall battle content was consistent regarding the universe and lore of the title, and to review the elements that were given an FFXIV-original twist for potential concerns.

What led to Prishe being chosen as the main character for the FFXIV Echoes of Vana'diel FFXI Raid?

Nakagawa and the Scenario Team: We felt that the first boss of the alliance raid needed to be a character with a strong impression; someone that even those unfamiliar with FFXI would warm up to. Given her appearance in Dissidia Final Fantasy and various other titles as the “face” of FFXI, as well as her striking and charming personality, Prishe seemed like the perfect fit for what we were looking for.

Some aspects of her design were adjusted from her appearance in FFXI, and we were slightly worried if fans would be receptive to them, but we were relieved to see lots of positive comments after the alliance raid was released.

Many of Prishe’s trademark attacks and abilities appear during the FFXIV Echoes of Vana'diel FFXI Raid, such as Asuran Fists, Auroral Uppercut, Banishga, and Nullifying Dropkick. How did you determine which moves would appear in the Raid? Also, how did their appearances in other games, like FFXI and Dissidia, influence the look of the attacks here?

Nakagawa: I asked for input from the person in charge of this boss fight regarding this question, so I’m quoting him below:

“I placed a heavy emphasis on conveying Prishe's defining character traits. I wanted her attacks to make sense for those who Prishe from FFXI and establish her personality for those who haven't played, so I gave her moves that symbolize her youthful spirit.

Prishe has appeared in many other titles, and I hoped that by conveying her charm through this boss fight, players would not only take interest in the original FFXI but also in other titles such as Dissidia Final Fantasy.

When deg her animations and visual effects, I did my best to stay consistent with her previous appearances, while making alterations to help her naturally blend in with the setting of FFXIV and reinforce her character traits. For example, her Auroral Uppercut and Nullifying Dropkick are still an uppercut and dropkick, and Asuran Fists still features eight consecutive hits; but aside from those core ideas, each move was largely redesigned.”

As a side note, the staff member in charge of the Prishe encounter was also the battle content designer for AAC: Light-Heavyweight Division M2 featuring Honey B. Lovely. As with the Honey B. Lovely encounter, I think he did a great job of deg a delightful boss battle that highlights the character's unique traits.

Likewise, how did you pick Fafnir for the FFXIV Raid and how did you adjust the enemy’s moveset for attacks like Absolute Terror and Hurricane Wing when compared to FFXI?

Nakagawa: In the early planning stages, we brainstormed to decide the four bosses and enlisted the help of several game designers from the Battle System Team and Battle Content Team who are well-versed in FFXI. Among the many ideas pitched, Fafnir was included. After some deliberation, we decided on the Shadow Lord (boss 4) and Prishe (boss 1) first, then the Ark Angels (boss 3), and finally, Fafnir (boss 2).

There were three reasons why we chose Fafnir:

  • Other bosses were humanoid, and so from an overall perspective, we needed a powerful, giant monster to differentiate them.
  • Dragons are a staple in fantasy works, and so choosing one would allow for us to create an appealing boss fight that would be easy to understand for those who may not know FFXI.
  • We wanted to include at least one HNM (High Notorious Monster), which are very memorable for FFXI players.

Capricious Cassie, another HNM from FFXI, was also considered. We debated over which one to choose and ended up choosing Fafnir because we felt Capricious Cassie would have a weaker impression on players who aren’t familiar with FFXI.

As for deg the Fafnir encounter, I started by deciding on the overall theme of the boss battle. I decided to feature a powerful dragon with dynamic and spectacular attacks and followed that theme as I came up with the battle mechanics based on Fafnir’s signature moves in FFXI, such as Dragon Breath, Spike Flail, Absolute Terror, and Hurricane Wing.

I then relayed my ideas to the staff member in charge of the boss fight, who filled in the details. They captured the essence of Fafnir’s moves, carefully maintaining the impression of those attacks in FFXI as they put all the pieces together to make for a dynamic and spectacular encounter.

What challenges did you face when creating the FFXI Ark Angel equipment for the FFXIV Echoes of Vana'diel Raid?

Mogi: Because the design is fully black in color, during the initial drafts, the FFXI and FFXIV versions of the gear gave off very different impressions based on the varying physiques of the character races. With that in mind, during the concept art phase, I was quite conscious about keeping the visual impressions consistent where possible, such as the lengths of the top and the volume of the sleeves. A major area of adjustment was the ornate details, which I added so the gear wouldn’t look like it lacked features compared to existing FFXIV gear. To avoid deviating too far from the original look, I focused on the symbolic curved lines on the front of the torso as the key pattern and eliminated unnecessary designs as much as possible. Finally, with the final 3D models in mind, I added some highlights to the metallic parts; with that, I think I was able to achieve a simple yet weighted look.

What kinds of have you gotten from the Echoes of Vana'diel first part from FFXIV players, and how will that affect future parts of the FFXI crossover?

Nakagawa: Are you referring to from FFXIV players who are not familiar with FFXI? I’ll answer with that assumption in mind.

There was a large number of comments regarding the third boss, the Ark Angel encounter. FFXIV has never had an encounter where you fight five bosses all at once, and I’m very happy it was well-received as a fresh new battle experience. We saw many positive responses from both those who have and haven’t played FFXI. Developing the battle was filled with hurdles we had to overcome and proved quite challenging for us, but I feel it was all worth the effort.

Prishe also received a lot of , including from people who have not played FFXI. They seemed to enjoy her unique and charming personality, and many people commented that the fight was quite different from other boss fights, with its engaging mechanics that were both unusual and comical. As for Fafnir and the Shadow Lord, although their mechanics were straight forward, many players seemed to enjoy those battles for their visual impressiveness.

As for the difficulty level, we worked to make the battles more challenging overall compared to Myths of the Realm. Casual players mentioned that they struggled on their first attempt but felt the difficulty was just right and enjoyable from the second attempt onward. Others also noted that the difficulty level was perfect for an alliance raid, and that they look forward to subsequent installments to be this challenging.

Since Myths of the Realm saw a lot of in the vein of “It wasn’t challenging enough, even on day one!” I’m relieved to see people seem to be receptive to this change in direction.

On the flip side, because it is a rare opportunity of a crossover with another game, I’ve seen players eagerly asking for even more unique ideas and new mechanics.

We’ve started work on the second installment, leveraging the we received from everyone. We aim to sur even this first alliance raid in the series, so I hope you'll look forward to it!

Record of Lodoss War Creator Talked About Playing FFXI

Square Enix updated the Final Fantasy XI We are Vana’diel site with an interview featuring Record of Lodoss War and Record of Grancrest War creator Ryo Mizuno talking about his time playing FFXI. He started out be talking how he got into TRPGs after meeting Group SNE President Hitoshi Yasuda and playing the TRPGs Traveller and Dungeons & Dragons Red Box. From there, he talked about briefly playing gamebooks like Fighting Fantasy and Sorcery, before getting into his time with the Square Enix MMORPG.

Ryo Mizuno explained that he played FFXI between the Rise of the Zilart and Seekers of Adoulin expansions. He noted he was a White Mage Hume from San d’Oria. However, he said, " I did somewhat regret choosing to play as a female character.” He explained “Players from overseas were constantly hitting on me.” He also mentioned playing as a Red Mage and Blue Mage.

As for the experience of playing FFXI, Ryo Mizuno explained what it was like to start the Final Fantasy MMORPG and how it compared to TRPGs.

“I got goosebumps. It had the same impact as when I encountered TRPGs for the first time. I feel that people such as us who work on the creative side of games, or those who simply love to create things, often have this desire to immerse themselves in worlds that they find appealing. I felt like Vana'diel was a world where I could realize that dream. I thought to myself, "My character can live here? Is this for real? This is like the perfect world!" I also wondered why it took me so long to embrace MMORPGs.

Of course, it was my first experience with online gaming, so I really had no concept of what I was supposed to do or how I was supposed to act. I probably got a lot of things wrong in the beginning. I another player who was playing as a Mithra started talking to me on the map and I didn't really know how to respond. I also spent time just walking and thinking how great the music in Ronfaure was, and ended up getting chased down by an Orc.”

As a reminder, Square Enix started a We are Vana’diel campaign with FFXIV that makes it cheaper for those of us subscribed to that MMO to start playing FFXI. It makes it $5.95 per month, instead of $11.95.

Final Fantasy XI is available on PCs, and the second part of the interview with Record of Lodoss War creator Ryo Mizuno will be on We are Vana’diel on February 26, 2025.

FFXI Valentione’s Day Event Starts Just Ahead of Valentine’s Day

Square Enix confirmed that yes, Final Fantasy XI will celebrate Valentine’s Day again this year, as the Valentione’s Day FFXI event starts on February 10, 2025. It will run until February 24, 2025. We can earn a festive pink-and-red apron with white ruffled shirt, as well as a flower bouquet in a vase with a bow, by taking part.

To get the outfit, you need to help out Moogles with a new quest in FFXI. There are ones in six different locations. Helping them find people to bring love to others will net you the new attire.

You can find those Moogles for the Valentione’s Day quest at the following spots:

  • Bastok Markets (G-8)
  • Bastok Mines (I-9)
  • Northern San d'Oria (D-8)
  • Southern San d'Oria (J-9)
  • Windurst Waters (F-5)
  • Windurst Woods (K-10)

For the flowery furnishing, you need to play a Chocobo minigame. It involves pairing them up. You’ll only be able to play it by talking to characters at the three locations below:

  • Chabobo at Windurst Woods (K-12)
  • Niscoliette at Southern San d’Oria (I-11)
  • Prycillia at Bastok Mines (J-9)

Here’s how both of the rewards look. As you can see, the attire is available for everyone:

Both Final Fantasy MMORPGs are celebrating Valentine’s Day, as FFXI and FFXIV both celebrate Valentione’s Day. While we need to wait for the older game’s event to begin, it already started in the newer one. That runs February 3-17, 2025.

Final Fantasy XI is available on PCs, and the Valentione’s Day event runs over Valentine’s Day in FFXI between February 10-24, 2025.

Limbus Being Temporarily Shut Down in FFXI

Square Enix announced that those playing FFXI will soon be unable to access Limbus due to updates and upgrades. This will be a temporary measure. There is no word on how long maintenance on the area will last. However, people will have a chance to continue to explore the dimension for now, as work won’t begin on it until the launch of the February 2025 update.

FFXI Director and Producer Yoji Fujito announced the Limbus shutdown on the official forums for the game and talked about why the dimension will be temporarily unavailable. The goal is to make them “independent of group type” so they will be set to “everyone’s current level.” This would make it easier for more players to head into Apollyon and Temenos. Because of the size and scope, it will need to be completely unavailable during the adjustment process.

Fujito also teased what the area will be like after the update. He noted there would be “all-new adventures” in the statement. He also mentioned that Limbus won’t require Ancient Beastcoins after the update, but that during the downtime there will be ways to get those, chips, and equipment upgrade materials.

In his 2025 new year’s message, Fujito talked about the future of the game. While Limbus didn’t come up, he did discuss changes to gameplay elements like Besieged. He again mentioned that there will be higher levels for it soon.

As for more recent changes, January 2025 additions came up. There will be new Records of Eminence objectives. He teased Rhapsodies of Vana’diel’s The Orb’s Radiance will become a high-tier mission battlefield. The new Ambuscade notorious monsters will involve Iron Giants in Volume 1 and Mandragora with Citrullus and Lycopodium in Volume 2. There will also be some new items and titles.

Final Fantasy XI is available on PCs.

More Final Fantasy XI Single-player Options for Solo Play Coming

Final Fantasy XI Director and Producer Yoji Fujito issued a new year’s message for the Square Enix MMO, and it included plans for solo play for people who prefer a single-player experience when going through the game. There are also going to be autogroup updates for the more necessary multiplayer moments and quality of life adjustments for existing additions.

There are two main adjustments when it comes to the solo play Final Fantasy XI options for people who prefer a single-player game. One has to do with the Alter Ego system. This is a feature that lets us use Trust Magic to call upon Ciphers to have NPCs us on our adventures. There are certain restrictions in place now regarding their usage. In 2025, Fujito said that both these characters will become more powerful and “entry requirements” will change when bringing them along with us on adventures.

The autogroup and other quality of life changes for Final Fantasy XI also seem like they could benefit not only all of us, but those who prefer to go solo and try for a single-player experience. The Assist Channel may end up being opened to everyone. This is a channel that currently exists and is designed to help find parties for things like raids. However, general players can’t use it. There could also be a new feature that would let you look for people who are also trying to find allies for whatever multiplayer challenge you’re also interested in playing. Besieged may also get item level , and Records of Eminence may be adjusted for ease of entry.

This comes after Naoki Yoshida, who is the director and producer for Final Fantasy XIV, discussed the future of that MMO during a New Year’s 2025 note. We’ll see the 7.2 and 7.3 patch series show up with new content for that game this year. Fujito’s message also teased more FFXI content in FFXIV.

Final Fantasy XI is available for the PC worldwide.
