Apple and Square Enix announced that multiple Final Fantasy games will be ing Apple Arcade over the next two months, with the FFIV 3D remake that first appeared on the 3DS, FFIV: The After Years, and Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster all confirmed. There’s one other RPG from the company also showing up alongside them. Trials of Mana will appear there as well.

All of these are considered “+” versions of the titles. This is a label applied to full games that may have already been available on the App Store, but with a paid version, before. It signifies that they are now Apple Arcade free versions with everything included.

Here’s the full list of when the FFIV entries, Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster, and Trials of Mana game will launch on the service. The App Store product pages are already live for each one, so you can see space requirements, screenshots, and descriptions for each title.

Square Enix ed and released games on Apple Arcade basically since the subscription service started. One of the first contributions to the catalog was Various Daylife, which later went on to become a multiplatform game. This is the first time Final Fantasy and Mana games appeared on Apple Arcade, however.

The next round of Square Enix Apple Arcade additions will kick off with FFIV (3D Remake) and its sequel FFIV: The After Years on December 9, 2024. Apple Arcade is available for Macs and Apple iOS devices.

Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Xbox Games Launch at TGS

You can now find all six Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster games on the Xbox Series X and S, as they were one of Square Enix’s shadowdrops during the Xbox Tokyo. The first Final Fantasy game, as well as FFII, FFIII, FFIV, FFV, and FFVI are all available alone or in a bundle together on the platform worldwide.

The pricing for the Xbox Series X versions of the games is essentially identical to the ones on other platforms. So the first two games, which are FFI and FFII, each cost $11.99 normally. As part of a temporary launch sale, these are now $9.59 each. FFIII, FFIV, FFV, and FFVI are typically $17.99 each. You can get them for $14.39 each on the Xbox for a limited time. Finally, the bundle is $59.99 in honor of the TGS 2024 debut, though that price will go back up to $74.99 once the sale is done.

Here’s the trailer revealing the games are now on the Xbox Series X and S.

Square Enix didn’t note if this means we’ll also eventually see physical Xbox Series X and S copies of Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster. The PS4 and Switch versions did end up getting retail copies. While the first, more limited run sold out in 2023, Anniversary Edition retail copies for both platforms will once again return to stores on October 8, 2024.

You can find the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster games, which consist of FFI, FFII, FFIII, FFIV, FFV, and FFVI, on the PS4, Switch, Xbox Series X, PC via Steam, and mobile devices.

First Final Fantasy 35th Anniversary Special Covers FFI to FFVI

As part of the Final Fantasy 35th anniversary celebrations, as well as a nod to the Pixel Remaster series, Square Enix kicked off a special interview series. The first of the two part segment appeared on July 11, 2023. It features Creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, Artist Kazuko Shibuya, and Brand Manager Yoshinori Kitase talking about FFI, FFII, FFIII, FFIV, FFV, and FFVI.

It began with Sakaguchi discussing a reunion for developers and people he plays FFXIV with, which Shibuya s. He noted they “blamed” the team for FFIII having no save points in the final dungeon. Sakaguchi explained how he found himself apologizing for that development decision.

Around the 8:24 mark, the meaning behind the “Final Fantasy” name came up. Sakaguchi mentioned how Fighting Fantasy’s title influenced it. He brought up how Dragon Quest’s name could be shortened, and the team wanted a game that could be abbreviated in a similar way with the Roman alphabet, which led to FF. The group also discussed the urban legends behind the title and debunked them.

Abyssal Quasar, Ebon Fang, Eclipsing Moon, and Void Meteor clips all come up. The final attack sequence is the one to get the most screen time.

This is one of many crossover characters and events to come to War of the Visions. Both Final Fantasy and unrelated games ended up part of its collaborations. Back in November 2021, FFXV showed up and added Noctis to the game. In December 2021, the Persona 5 Royal event kicked off. That added Joker, Queen, and Violet.

War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is now available for both Android and Apple iOS devices. The War of the Visions FFIV event will run until February 22, 2022.

FFXIV Tomestone Gear FFIV

During the FFXIV Letter from the Producer live LXVII, Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida revealed new Tomestone gear resembling characters from FFIV. The new Tomestone gear will appear 4 weeks after the 6.0 patch. Players can acquire the new gear by exchanging two new types of Tomestones. [Thanks, Kumoricon on Twitter!]

Yoshida confirmed the addition of seven new Tomestone gear sets for various jobs, though some others were left unrevealed. All of the Tomestone gear sets resemble the outfits worn by their job counterpart characters from Final Fantasy IV. For example, the Paladin gear set resembles Cecil Harvey's armor. The Bard gear set resembles Edward Chris von Muir, and the Ninja gear set resembles Edge Geraldine.

Players can obtain these gear sets by collecting new Allagan Tomestones of Aphorism. The Tomestones of Aphorism will not have a weekly cap. Additionally, Yoshida also revealed that the team is working on increasing the maximum number of glamour plates people can set as well as their armory chest slots.

Along with the addition of Savage raids four weeks after the launch of the 6.0 patch, players can also begin obtaining Allagan Tomestones of Astronomy. The Tomestones of Astronomy can be exchanged for higher-level late-game gear. Furthermore, Square Enix is also reducing the number of Tomestones required to obtain Savage raid weapons from 1,000 to 500.

You can check out all of the revealed FFIV Tomestone gear sets in the screenshots below.

final fantasy iv pixel remaster

I went into Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remaster with very high hopes after playing the original Final Fantasy. That remaster felt like it completely reinvigorated that game with its gorgeous visuals, stunning take on the soundtrack, and an auto-battle system that made grinding levels and gold so much easier. Here, we see the fourth game get that same treatment, although the jump from the SNES is not as drastic. The changes feel more subtle, like a delightful companion to the original rather than something that feels like a definitively better version.

You get that sense from the very opening notes of the game’s theme music. Final Fantasy IV has what is easily my favorite soundtrack in the series, or at least the one that has stayed with me the most. The remastered opening track carries that same power, but there was something about it that felt off. The original game has a very definitive sound to it. Like a color palette for an artist, it felt like the original game drew from a suite of sounds that intertwined throughout the soundtrack. It’s like how the Quintet games like Actraiser and Soul Blazer have a distinct style. Likewise, Final Fantasy IV has a sound all its own, and that style is burned into my memories. The nostalgia is deeply entrenched, which made the opening moments of Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remaster somewhat odd.

The soundtrack was given a rearrangement under the oversight of original composer Nobuo Uematsu, and you can tell. The tracks all play like re-imaginings of the originals, exploring the music and taking the sound style to interesting places. There are things like a sweeping gospel organ bit in the rearranged boss track, and many of the other songs feel like they’re exploring the music and fleshing out its sound in creative ways. It's interesting music and a delight to listen to, but I have a hard time listening to it over a soundtrack that was so formative to me growing up.

The visuals of Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remaster don’t take as big a leap as that of the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster (unsurprisingly). Pixel art was looking pretty good around the release of Final Fantasy IV, so the additional detail here doesn’t feel as earth-shattering. Like the music, though, it feels like it gets to explore more of the details that were lost in the original. Kain’s armor and helmet gain better definition, the character features feel more prominent, and many of the monster designs feel just a bit clearer. I wasn’t swept off my feet, but I still found myself stopping to appreciate the new details brought to characters and places.

Auto-battle continues to make these games so much easier to play. Here you can tap a button to have the battle speed up, with all of your characters doing the last thing you instructed them to do. This is super useful if you want to use certain character abilities or just spam attacks in easy areas, although the prominence of back attacks and ambushes mean you need to pay a bit of attention. Likewise, if you forget you gave your character an odd instruction (like Row, which switches characters from back to front rows in times when they may have been back attack-ed), expect your character to keep switching rows until you notice.

Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remaster

This is especially true if you use some of the unique character abilities in Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remaster. Things like Cecil’s Dark Knight powers and Edward’s Heal ability bring a bit of variety that weren't in the original release. However, some of these powers come at a some sort of cost (as I learned to my horror when I noticed that Edward’s Heal was u all my potions), so again, don’t accidentally spam them for a half hour on auto. They add some flavor, although few of these powers are going to completely change how you play. It’s just nice to see them in action in this remaster.

The various tweaks to music, visuals, and play, even if they’d been terrible, would have a hard time taking away from the fact that this is just a fantastic RPG. This is the game that sold me on Final Fantasy and the genre itself, and its story and characters are still as captivating as they were decades ago. This game was unafraid to go to the skies, deep into the earth, and to the moon itself, offering an endlessly creative array of monsters, machines, horrors, and elemental creatures to battle against in each new place. It’s a journey of endless surprises, exciting battles, and courage on the part of its heroes, and it’s lost none of its ability to impress since it first released.

Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remaster may initially butt up against your nostalgia if you have fond memories of the original, but over time, I really began to appreciate seeing its visuals and sound explored in creative ways. I enjoyed seeing these new takes that built on what the original created, or that encouraged you to soak in the details and find a newfound appreciation of the old game. It reminded me how much I adore the original release, and it’s truly wonderful to see a new version out there drawing more people to this fantastic game so many years later.

Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remaster is available now on PCs as well as Android and iOS devices.

Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster installments are giving people a new way to play classic Nintendo and Super Nintendo games on modern platforms. Part of that involves a new look, with updated pixel art accompanying each release. To help get into that, Siliconera spoke with Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Art Director Kazuko Shibuya, who also worked on the original games, and Producer Toshio Akiyama to talk about the sprites and design in the games.

Jenni Lada, Siliconera: What was it like returning to work on sprites and designs for older Final Fantasy games for the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster entries after so many years?

Kazuko Shibuya, Square Enix: I think the reason why I was able to gain this opportunity is thanks to the fact that I’m still actively at Square Enix. So, I was just genuinely glad that I’ve continued working for so long, and grateful to be able to revisit my own work, and starting point, from 34 years ago.

final fantasy pixel remaster sprites 2

How influential were the 16-bit games like FFIV, FFV, and FFVI on the sprites for the first three Pixel Remasters?

Shibuya: For Final Fantasy I, FINAL FANTASY I, Final Fantasy II, and Final Fantasy III, I
refrained from filling in extensive details, and kept the visuals looking similar to how they did on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). The field and battle animations use Final Fantasy V as a basic point of reference, so they can nod their heads and wave their hands.

Of these six games, Final Fantasy III and IV ended up with 3D remakes. Did the they affect the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster sprites, designs and development? And did any parts of the 3D remakes rub off on them?

Shibuya: I didn’t have the 3D remake in mind at all.

With games like FFIV, FFV, and FFVI already being 16-bit titles, did that mean fewer changes? How did you approach working on them?

Shibuya: During the Famicom era, regardless of the number of bits, the pixels were arranged in a unique way meant specifically for them to be displayed on a CRT monitor, where colors blur, expand, and stretch vertically. They aren’t meant for liquid crystal displays (LCDs) at all, where each pixel shows up with vivid clarity. In this remaster series, we’ve redone the art with the intention of displaying it on an LCD screen.

Additionally, in of character size, we added more leeway above and to the left and right of the original 16x24 pixels across Final Fantasy I through VI, to give the characters’ poses more freedom. This allows arms to be extended laterally, and for capes to sway or flutter.

For Final Fantasy VI, due to the large head-to-body proportions, the height of the head was prevented from fully being shown, instead making it look completely flat. At the time, I desperately wished I could have just one more pixel on top. My wish came true in this remaster. (The reason why it doesn’t look awkward in the original version is thanks to the CRT monitor, which expands and stretches images vertically.)

final fantasy pixel remaster art sprites

Each Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster entry has its own art gallery. How did you decide which pieces to share?

Toshio Akiyama, Square Enix: Mr. Yoshitaka Amano has created so very many illustrations for us, but there have been few
opportunities to view them together as a collection. Therefore, we have included as many illustrations as possible this time. I think we could even call this a complete collection.

Additionally, for Final Fantasy IV through VI, we had the characters’ super deformed illustrations, which had been created at what was Square at the time, so we also included all of those.

How did more modern sprite-based Final Fantasy games, like Brave Exvius and Record Keeper, influence character and enemy designs?

Shibuya: I wasn’t thinking of them at all here, and they didn’t influence them at all.

With King’s Knight’s remake being associated with FFXV, are there any other classic games you worked on that you would like to see return and revived somehow?

Shibuya: Perhaps The 3-D Battles of WorldRunner. The game had included the option to view it in 3D by using special 3D glasses, but I think this could be done with CG now!

The Final Fantasy I, II, and III Pixel Remaster entries are available on PCs and mobile devices now. Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remaster will appear on September 8, 2021.

Square Enix released a Final Fantasy IV interview with Game Designer and Scenario Writer Takashi Tokita. Much of it focuses on various characters from the game. But in particular, a few things come up. For example, Tokita mentioned how Cecil was probably the first FFIV character created and discussed the inclusion of Yang’s wife’s frying pan for a critical moment.

Editor’s Note: There are FFIV spoilers in Tokita’s interview responses. 4t5uh

First, when it came to discussing which FFIV character was created first, Tokita mentioned Cecil was likely the first to come up. This was due to the concept of having a dark knight become a paladin as an early plot point. Here’s his exact quote from the interview.

I think it might have been Cecil, him being the main character and all. I’m pretty sure the concept of changing from dark knight to paladin was there from the start, as well as the rival Kain and heroine Rosa. From there, to keep with FF’s balanced variation in character age and gender, I thought that it might be good to include children – a pair of twin mages with one a white mage and the other a black mage, from which Palom and Porom came to be. Yang and Edge and the like were my idea as well, to include a kind of sense of variety.

Later, Tokita brought up the appearance of Yang’s wife’s frying pan and what led to it being implemented as a “resurrection” item.

Farewells are so intensely dramatic, so our original plan was for characters to start dying one after another. But Mr. Sakaguchi didn’t think that was a viable element in a video game and instead wanted to keep alive, including them all in the party. We were able to make that happen in later ports of FFIV, but there’s no showmanship in just having everyone live on and on forever, so with Yang we had you go to his wife and get the frying pan that has the power to wake him up. In FFIV for Nintendo DS, we included a function that shows you what the party were thinking. With that, we made a point to add lines like Cecil mistakenly thinking something like, “Oh, if we cook food with this...!” upon getting the frying pan.

Final Fantasy IV is available on the Game Boy Advance, PlayStation, PlayStation Portable, PC, Super Nintendo, and Wonderswan. A 3D remake appeared on the Nintendo DS, PC, and mobile devices. It will also be a part of the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster line and show up on the PC and mobile devices.

best final fantasy iv character

Monday marks 30 years since Final Fantasy IV debuted in Japan! The game means a lot to many players out there, and it’s a good time to reminisce about it. Who’s your favorite character? Who’s the coolest? Hey, who has the best pixel art? However you think about what makes the best Final Fantasy IV character, let us know your picks! These are ours.

I would have to say Rydia is the best Final Fantasy IV character. Or, at the very least, she's one who goes through some of the most changes and growth. We meet her when she's a child. Because of Cecil's, and by extension our, actions, her world is torn apart. She's left terrified and mourning.

Then, before she has a chance to adapt to her new normal, the game shakes up her entire life again. She's thrust into a whole new set of circumstances, the likes of which normal people couldn't imagine. But, as a result, she comes out of it all one of the strongest, most sympathetic, and best characters in the game. — Jenni

I don't exactly have any good reason for this, but I just love Fusoya from Final Fantasy IV. The Lunarian is an interesting character who relays a lot of neat plot elements and background secrets, but he's most interesting to see in combat. The man is a magical juggernaut, capable of all of the most powerful spells in the game. With limited MP, he's kind of like revisiting Tellah, except he can cast Meteo without dying. Which means I get to fling Meteo around at whatever enemy I choose. Well, for the short time he's around.

Also, the man is 95% beard, which makes for this really great pixel design. Especially if he falls in combat, where he basically collapses into this sea of flowing beard. I just love his design, and that he lets me use a spell the game had gone out of its way to show was the most powerful magic in the universe. “Oh, that spell kills people to use? Yeah, I use it casually.” Fusoya is a magic beast. — Joel

As much as JRPGs are about telling a specific story with carefully-defined characters, I'm still a big fan of customization. And that was rarer in the early days! Given that, my favorite Final Fantasy IV character is Namingway.

Namingway's presence in FF4, and Final Fantasy in general, represents the idea of reinvention. You can rename your characters! You can fundamentally change who you are! It's never too late. And it also isn't too late for Namingway, who picks up some new lifestyles himself in later entries.

Also that little fella is adorable. — Graham

During the Square Enix E3 2021 presentation, the company announced the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series, which are remastered versions of the first six Final Fantasy games. It is not a set of all six, but rather, six individual games that will appear on mobile devices and Windows PC through the Steam storefront. There is currently no release date.

Players will need to buy each game separately, which allows them to pick and choose their favorite one to own. This is not the first time that Square Enix has remastered the earlier Final Fantasy games, but they included changes such as updated sprites or a slightly remixed soundtrack. The Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series appears to contain faithful ports of the original games.
