Square Enix had its own take on the mecha shooter Titanfall with a free-to-play title called Figureheads that released on PC in March 2016, and the company announced today that it will shut down on June 30, 2018.

In the termination notice, Square Enix shared a bit of info on why it is shutting down. It started as a project that aims to combine shooter elements with strategic gameplay, to provide players with “an experience you can only have in this game.”

While the developers had ambitions for the game, in the end it appears to have been a case of having too much going on that made things over-complicated for new players. Square Enix says a lot of people did get to try the game out, but most customers ended up not playing a single game with the main reasons being “the mecha controls are too hard,” “game rules aren’t simple,” and “game speed is too slow.”

Square Enix felt that these were fatal flaws for any competitive game, but since it did have some fans who really got into it, they continued adding more such as non-competitive modes, a PvE mode to help you get used to the controls, game balance and game speed adjustments, and so on. The game also got a PS4 release in March 9, 2017.

The company was able to keep its players thanks to its continuous fixes and adjustments through updates, but it was becoming increasingly difficult in of providing long-term service to the player base, so Square Enix decided to terminate all services for it on both PC and PS4.

Micro-transaction sales and content update will end on March 22, and the client will no longer be available for on June 28, a couple days before its final day of service on June 30, 2018 at 4:00pm JST.

Square Enix released their free-to-play third-person mecha shooter, Figureheads, for PC last year, and the game is now getting a PS4 release in Japan on March 9, 2017 according to this week’s issue of Famitsu magazine. [Thanks, Hachima.]

The robot tactical shooting game is currently available for PC in Japan, but the game never released on Steam. In addition to bringing the PvP feature that is the main part of the game, the PS4 version brings in a new PvE mode that will have you go up against giant bosses.

Early registration will include a bonus featuring a Xenogears set of items:

• Lightweight: Weltall
• Middlewight: Brigandier
• Heavyweight: Siebzehn
• Figureheads: Fei / Bart
• EXP Boost 30 days
• BIT Boost 30 days

All players will also get a present of 30 Gold. Pre-registration will be available from February 9 through March 8, 2017.

Figureheads is currently available for PC in Japan. It releases for PlayStation 4 on March 9, 2017.

Square Enix has released a new trailer that shows off machines from Xenogears in its online strategy mecha shooter Figureheads.

It reveals that the crossover will allow you to play as Xenogears characters including Fei Fong Wong, Elly Van Houten, Citan Uzuki, and Bart Fatima. The Xenogears mecha included in the crossover are the Weltall, the Brigander, and the Siebzahn. There will also be background music from Xenogears made available in Figureheads.

Figureheads is due to launch into an open beta in Japan in March. It s 5v5 play with a total of 40 different mechas to choose from. You win matches by eliminating the entire enemy team or by capturing their base.

Figureheads is a recently revealed online strategy mecha shooter by Square Enix that will focus on working together with teammates in online battles. The latest video shows us more details on the game.

In Figureheads, there are three types of weight classes for the mecha units. They are light, medium, and heavy classes, and each one comes with two different types of units.

Lightweight classes have Snipers that use sniper rifles and Engineers with a radar weapon. Middleweight classes have the Assault unit that comes with a rocket launcher weapon and the unit that has a repair kit. Heavyweight units have the Strikers with cannons and Heavy Assault class that comes with a Gatling Gun.

The footage at 0:50 starts with a look at the units in the order of Assault, , Sniper, Engineer, Heavy Assault, and Striker. The next part explains how you’ll have three AI units, called Figureheads that will follow you around, and you’ll need to give commands from various options as their orders.

As far as the online 5v5 team battles go, each player will have their own three Figureheads, so with the players included, there will be a total of 20 units per side. Players and their Figureheads will all play a role in the strategic shootouts, with ers in the back, and attackers in the frontline.

On the maps, you can find Repair Points to recover your unit and Figureheads’ health, and a Supply Point to get some ammo. Using these areas and taking over their surroundings will be a key factor in winning the matches.

You win by taking over the other team’s outpost by shooting it down, but you’ll also need to be careful, as the opponents will be doing the same, meaning you’ll need to defend your own, too.

Finally, the last part of the video shows how you’ll get to customize your unit along with the Figureheads. We’ll find out more about the customizations in the near future.

Square Enix recently opened a teaser site for a new game called Figureheads, an free-to-play online strategy mecha shooter. The website also provides a look at a trailer that shows us a bit of what the game looks like.

We still don’t know too much about the game as far as gameplay goes, but Square Enix have labeled it as a “robot x shooter x strategy game” and it will feature online 5v5 battles.

Figureheads is expected to launch sometime in 2015 for PC, as a free-to-play title with micro-transactions.
