Following the original Fate/Stay Night visual novel's debut in 2004, the series has since grown into an expansive universe spanning countless games and spin-off titles. With the recent release of Fate/Samurai Remnant in 2023, we wanted to discuss what our favorite projects are in the long-running franchise. Here are the Fate/series games we would personally recommend.

Emiya Gohan hands down. I always found some Fate stories, especially Stay Night, can end up muddying up its overarching plot with the more goofy slice-of-life stuff, but this one lets them lean into it fully, and it pays off. What is lost in of drama, lore, or what have you, is more than made up for by seeing Cu Chulainn's part-time job or Sasaki Kojiro enjoying an exquisitely made bacon sandwich. I like the musou-style Extella games a lot, too, and pretty much anything featuring Nero, but Emiya Gohan takes (and bakes!) the cake in the end for me. I still chop carrots in the style they use in one episode. -- Elliot

As a Musou/Warriors connoisseur, the Fate/Extella games immediately caught my highest level of interest. I had long dreamed of a game where I control Servants like Artoria or Cu Chulainn to mow up tons of enemies and wrap everything up with their Noble Phantasms. The Extella games delivered exactly that. The Umbral Star also had very touching stories, and I actually shed a tear at Altera route's ending. But the most surprising thing is that these games were made by Marvelous instead of Koei Tecmo. So, I can't wait to finally get around to diving into Fate/Samurai Remnant to see the latter's response. -- Kite

Fate/Samurai Remnant is the latest game to release in the franchise and is now available on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC.

e3 2021 announcements fire emblem

The E3 season is a time of yearning. A time of hoping for long-awaited sequels, of surprise and delight at new things. What are our most wanted E3 2021 announcements? Read on. (And share your own in the comments!)

I've learned over the years that the more narrow my wishes, the more likely my disappointment. So rather than a specific project, I'll hang my hopes on something, anything related to a new traditional Fire Emblem. A Genealogy remake? A Radiance remaster? I'd even take an as-is Binding Blade localization and be happy.

But it's about time for another entry in one of my favorite franchises, and it's unlikely that a full, original successor will quite be ready. (And the rumors on all these projects have been around forever. At some point, one has to pan out, right?)

Of course, if Nintendo holds off on a new Fire Emblem announcement because it's reviving Advance Wars, you won't see me complaining. — Graham

e3 2021 announcements fate stay night

I would be over the blue, blue glass moon if a major publisher or platform holder would give prominent promotion to the announcement of full, officially sanctioned localizations of Fate/Stay Night and Tsukihime (or its remake). The time is right, and having them (and games like them) gain pride of place at one of the English-speaking gaming world's splashiest events would be a truly inspiring occurrence.

Of course, such a move would likely be more down to Type-MOON's decision making rather than a major player like Sony, Nintendo, or Microsoft's, but however it happens, the thought of being able to write about a still-kind-of-obscure visual novel franchise as an E3 headline is exciting. — Josh

mega man battle network

Capcom has been releasing Legacy Collections of the Mega Man franchise in recent years. So far, it has covered the classic, X, Zero, and ZX series. Only a few series are left to receive the legacy touch: Legends, Battle Network, and Star Force.

Honestly, I can't talk about Legends without reopening old wounds about the canceled third game project. But I'd be on cloud nine if Capcom announces a Battle Network Legacy Collection. It would also go well with the current celebration of its 20th anniversary. I also hope Star Force will follow closely, since it will soon reach its 15th anniversary as well. — Kite

e3 2021 announcements super mario rpg

Since it's E3 2021 announcements time, I'm going bold and overly hopeful here. I'd love a sequel to Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Seeing Nintendo and Square Enix working together again on a shared IP would make me so happy. Although fans often consider the Mario & Luigi RPG series to be its spiritual successor, I never clicked with them. The new races and characters in Super Mario RPG always felt more creative and exciting.

I would love a proper sequel that involved visiting Star Road and learning about the "higher authority" mentioned by Geno. A revisit to some past location with appearances from familiar characters would be lovely, too. However, I want to see new characters and an expansion on what the two gaming giants created 25 years ago. — Oni

tokimeki memorial girl's side

I want what I can't have, haha.

I would love to see Tokimeki Memorial: Girl's Side 4th Heart localized. Given how popular otome games are and that simulations like Princess Maker are getting official translations, we should have it too! I want The Idolmaster: Starlit Season to appear outside Japan. It will be on Steam this time. Take a chance on that localization, Bandai Namco! And Koei Tecmo should finally realize there's a big enough audience outside of Japan for Angelique Luminarise to appear and perform well. Let's see some unusual Japanese games appear everywhere in 2021 and 2022! — Jenni

e3 2021 announcements fatal frame

If Koei Tecmo is willing to put together a Ninja Gaiden collection, then surely there's a fighting chance we'll get an announcement for a Fatal Frame collection, right? I am dying to see these games on the Switch or some modern console. Having replayed most of them recently, they're still some of the most terrifying experiences in gaming, and it's a crime that they're only getting harder and harder to play as time es. They're vital pieces of horror history, as well as just excellent games.

Plus: photo modes are all the rage these days. I'm sure folks would love to take some classy black-and-white pics with a ghost that's choking them to death. — Joel

lost odyssey

While it wouldn't be anything entirely new, I would love to see Microsoft bring some of the JRPGs released exclusive to the Xbox 360 to PC. It's definitely beating an old drum. And nothing worthy of E3 levels of groundbreaking announcements! But seeing a Lost Odyssey PC port would be incredible. It's definitely a defining RPG of that era, and I would personally love to see it more accessible to new generations of JRPG players now that the genre is back in vogue. Nothing beats that opening transition from CGI to gameplay, and it really is something that should be accessible outside of backwards compatibility on current gen-Xbox consoles. — Kazuma

The Fate series’ latest film Fate/stay night [Heaven’s Feel] I. presage flower is set to premiere in U.S. cinemas next month, and Aniplex US shared a new trailer where you can check out its English dub.

Based on the wildly popular Fate franchise that gave anime fans “Fate/stay night [Unlimited Blade Works],” “Fate/Zero” and the hit mobile game “Fate/Grand Order,” the first film in this movie trilogy explodes with epic action and heart-wrenching drama, tied together by original author Kinoko Nasu’s unique storytelling and otherworldly cast of characters. For the first time ever, moviegoers will experience the film’s English dub along with the despair, romance and terrifying secrets of the Holy Grail War with protagonist Shirou Emiya in the first chapter of this high-stakes trilogy.

Here’s a bit on its story:

10 years after the 4th Holy Grail War—a battle waged by seven Masters and seven Servants over the ultimate wish-granter, the Holy Grail —The 5th war breaks out in Fuyuki City.

Shirou Emiya—the adopted son of Kiritsugu Emiya, a participant of the previous Holy Grail War—resolves to fight, carrying out Kiritsugu’s dying wish, “becoming a hero of justice.”

There’s a young girl named Sakura Matou. She ires Shirou and brings kindness into the life of a boy utterly alone in the world.

Once the Holy Grail War starts, their lives drastically change.

Shirou decides to the war as a Master along with his Servant, Saber, as well as Rin Tohsaka, a rival Master of Archer.

But the battle starts to go awry as secret maneuvers by unseen forces are put into play…

When the film premiered in Japan last October, it topped its weekend box office with 413 million yen. You can get more information on the film over at its official website.

Fate/stay night [Heaven’s Feel] I. presage flower premieres in U.S. cinemas on June 5 and June 7 at 7:30pm local time for both dates, through Fathom's Digital Broadcast Network (DBN).

MangaGamer recently conducted a survey in which they asked their fans a number of questions regarding the kinds of visual novels they play, and what titles they’d like to see localized into English. Now, they’ve published the results of that survey on their blog (NSFW). Let’s start with the games most requested by fans:

  1. Fate/Stay Night
  2. Majikoi series
  3. Baldr series
  4. Muv-Luv series
  5. Umineko no Naku Koro Ni
  6. Shin Koihime Musou
  7. Rance series
  8. Flowers
  9. White Album 2
  10. Little Busters

Moving along, MangaGamer also shared some information on the demographics that took the survey. The major takeaway is that visual novels in the West are played primarily by men in the college age-range. 73% of respondents were male, while 23.5% were female, and overall 86% were between the ages of 18-30, with 62.5% being 18-24. Female fans skewed younger, with 13% of female respondents being between 13 and 17 years, while only 3.8 male respondents fell into that age range.

Unsurprisingly, the older consumers also bought more games. Those in the 13-17 range were likely to buy one title (or less) a year, while the older 18-24 bracket indicated that they were more likely to buy two or more visual novels every year. Interestingly, those over 30 are significantly more likely to buy six or more titles every year, which sort of makes them the whales of the visual novel industry.

Survey respondents also indicated that “story” [insert plot joke]  and “art” were the most important factors to them, although art held more sway with women than men. For guys, the third most important factor was erotic content, while in the case of women, it was the characters and sexuality options. Interestingly, more women also indicated that they prefer to use MACs rather than Windows PCs.

There are a lot more interesting tidbits in the complete results blog post, so if you’re interested in seeing what the hardcore visual novel market likes, I would recommend giving it a read (once again, NSFW). Now, excuse me while I pour one out for poor Mahou Tsukai no Yoru, which unfortunately did not make the top-10 list.
