The EVO Japan games lineup has been announced for 2025. In addition, registration is now open for those who are able to head to Japan and take part in the event.

EVO Japan 2025 will take place on May 9-11, 2025 at Tokyo Big Sight, and will feature five games in the main competition, along with two games for a new 5-on-5 team battle competition. The total prize pool will total 15 million yen.

The full games lineup for EVO Japan 2025 will feature:

• Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising
• Guilty Gear Strive
• The King of Fighters XV
• Street Fighter 6
• Tekken 8
• Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike (5-on-5)
• Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. (5-on-5)

The presence of Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. is notable, as this version of the game was only recently announced and is currently unavailable. It is set for release “this Winter” and players of existing copies of Virtua Fighter 5 should receive changes from this version, although there is no concrete release date yet. However, its presence on the EVO Japan 2025 lineup suggests it will appear within the next few months.

Registration for EVO Japan 2025 is now open, with a new process separating attendees and competitors. This was done to avoid confusion of previous shows. Spectators can order their tickets through the EVO Japan website, while competitors will also need to through start.gg. Entrants looking to enter the 5-on-5 competitions will need to form a team through the site before registration too Registration is open until April 6, 2025.

EVO Japan 2024 will appear as a major celebration of the fighting game genre. The event's primary highlight will be tournaments for existing games like Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8, and Guilty Gear Strive. However, the venue will also feature talk shows between fighting game creators, prominent cosplayers imitating characters from the games, and demo builds of games. Bushiroad has already confirmed that it will place playable demos of Hunter x Hunter: Nen x Impact in EVO Japan 2024, but more companies have newly announced their participation as well.

SNK has revealed that playable demos of Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves will be available in the EVO Japan 2024 venue at Ariake GYM-EX. The first five revealed characters—Rock Howard, Terry Bogard, Hotaru Futaba, Griffon Mask, and Preecha—will all be playable in this demo. SNK's booth will also feature appearances of the cosplayers Enako as Hotaru and Aki as Terry.

Meanwhile, Riot Games will also place demo builds for the League of Legends-based fighting game 2XKO. This demo will add Illaoi as the fifth playable character after Ahri, Darius, Ekko, and Yasuo.

Last but not least, Bandai Namco's Katsuhiro Harada of Tekken fame will collaborate with Arika's Akira Nishitani to hold t talk show sessions. Both of them will also talk with other fighting game creators, such as Arc System Works' Daisuke Ishiwatari and SNK's Yasuyuki Oda.

The full lineup for the EVO Japan 2024 fighting game tournament is now known. A total of seven titles will be available for people to test their skills to the limit with a prize pool for the top six players. Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6, the respective latest entries from Bandai Namco and Capcom's flagship series, are also included in the list.

Here is the full lineup of EVO Japan 2024, along with the maximum player allocations for each title:

Some of the titles in the lineup are yet to be released as of this announcement, but they will already be available by the time EVO Japan 2024 is held in late April 2024. Cygames will release Granblue Fantasy: Versus - Rising on December 14, 2023. Arc System Works and French Bread will launch Under Night In-Birth II Sys:Celes on January 25, 2024. Last but not least, Bandai Namco's Tekken 8 will be available on January 26, 2024.

The tournaments for all seven titles will feature a double-elimination bracket with the same prize pool. The winner of each tournament will win one million yen (approximately $6,750 as of December 1, 2023). The event will also hand out ￥450,000 to the runner-up, ￥250,000 for the third place, ￥140,000 for the fourth place, and ￥80,000 to two fifth-place finishers who went up to the Losers' Quarterfinals.

EVO Japan 2024 will take place at Ariake GYM-EX in Tokyo on April 27-29, 2024.

Visitors to Evo Japan 2023 will be able to take Street Fighter 6 for a spin. It will be available from March 31, 2023 to April 2, 2023 from 11am to 7pm. On the last day, it will be out until 6pm. Eight characters will be playable during the demo of Street Fighter 6 at Evo Japan 2023. You will be able to use Ryu, Chun-Li, Jamie, Luke, Guile, Kimberly, Juri, and Ken. This was the roster during the beta tests of Street Fighter 6 as well. At launch, there will be a total of nineteen characters, including one that you make yourself. If you play the demo at EVO 2023, then you will receive original custom stickers of the characters as a present.

Street Fighter 6 is the newest entry to the Street Fighter series. Not only are there the usual casual and ranked matches, you can also create your own playable character. The story mode, or World Tour, will let you learn techniques such as Chun-Li’s signature Spinning Bird Kick.

Street Fighter 6 will come out on June 2, 2023 for the PS4, PS5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. It will also appear in arcades in Japan in 2023. Those who visit Evo Japan 2023 will be able to play Street Fighter 6 from March 31, 2023 to April 2, 2023.

According to Tekken Series Director Katsuhiro Harada, a Tekken 8 Closed Trial will take place during the EVO Japan Tekken 7 competition. Players who to EVO Japan and play Tekken 7 will be authorized to participate in the Tekken 8 local alpha. There they'll experience of the game's updated mechanics and fighters like Jun Kazama and Nina Williams.

Harada made the announcement as he greeted the Tekken community following the Tekken World Tour 2022 Grand Finals held Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

After a fan requested clarification on what Harada meant by the Tekken 8 closed trial, Harada explained that the test would be a "closed alpha test" using local play. It will be held within the venue for EVO Japan's final region competition. The Tekken team is doing this because it needs to use an ideal test environment and ensure playability and control over the player profiles participating. As for online tests or builds that can be redeemed via store code, those would be arranged during the "beta" phase of development.

In game development lingo, "alpha" is typically used to refer to a game that has had all its major features implemented, such as gameplay systems and modes. Smaller features, revisions, cuts, and adjustments are still pending, and not all assets (such as art and models) are complete. Games in beta stage have their assets and features completed, and enter rigorous testing to reveal bugs, exploits, and performance issues. Many games release beta builds to segments of the playerbase or general public to gather , metrics, and other data that takes advantage of the large mass of available players.

Tekken 8 is in development for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam. It has not release window as of yet. The Tekken 8 closed trial, aka local alpha test, will take place at EVO Japan, which runs from March 31, 2023 to April 2, 2023.

The full array of EVO Japan 2023 main games has been revealed on Twitter, with Melty Blood: Type Lumina and Granblue Fantasy Versus among the final three. They’ll be ed by Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown. This brings the final total of main games at the event up to seven.

Many of these titles appeared at the event before. For example, EVO Japan 2019 included both Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition and Tekken 7. Meanwhile, in addition to EVO Japan 2023, Melty Blood: Type Lumina and Granblue Fantasy Versus appeared at EVO 2022.

It isn't possible to for EVO Japan 2023 just yet. That will begin at 12pm JST on November 20, 2022 (5am CET/7pm PT/10pm ET on November 19, 2022.) Folks will be able to go to the official site to sign up. This physical event will return following a break due to the pandemic.

EVO Japan will return in Spring 2023 after a pandemic-induced hiatus. The event's general manager Rick Thiher has confirmed that EVO Japan 2023 will take place in Tokyo from late March to early April 2023. The group has also updated the Japanese event's official website and set up a new Japanese Twitter .

Four titles will feature prominently in EVO Japan 2023 as main tournaments. They will be Arc System Works' Guilty Gear Strive, SNK's The King of Fighters XV, Capcom's Street Fighter V: Champion Edition, and Bandai Namco's Tekken 7. The organizers will reveal more titles in the lineup and details for tournament registrations in Fall 2022.

EVO Japan is the first event in the Evolution Championship Series to appear outside of the US. The inaugural event launched in January 2018. The organizers managed to hold the event annually in 2019 and 2020, but it was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Just like the original American event, developers of the featured games often publish new information in the middle of the tournaments. For example, the 2020 edition saw new playable character reveals for SoulCalibur VI and Samurai Shodown, as well as a new feature update for Tekken 7.

EVO Japan 2023 will take place physically at Tokyo Big Sight from March 31 to April 2, 2023.

At Evo Japan 2020, two more Samurai Shodown Season 2 characters were confirmed. Both Iroha and Sogetsu Kazama will be ing the cast this year. Dates for each one haven’t been confirmed. [Thanks, 4Gamer and NeoGeoNow!]

This means three of the four Samurai Shodown Season 2 characters have been confirmed. Mina Majikina was confirmed back in August 2019. We’ve actually already known Sogetsu Kazama, Kazuki’s brother who has power over water and uses it alongside his ninjutsu, is coming for a while too. His appearance was confirmed via a NESiCA companion app leak in October 2019.

Iroha is interesting, as she is a fan favorite character who made her official debut in Samurai Shodown VI. She’s a crane who is fighting on behalf of her master, using both feathers and fires with her attacks. In addition to her appearance here, she also showed up in Days of Memories as a character people couldn’t pursue and in her own game, Maid by Iroha, in Japan.

The fourth character in the Samurai Shodown Season 2 has not yet been revealed and only shadow appears in the preview image. However, when asked about who he might want to see come back in a recent interview with Siliconera, Game Director Nobuyuki Kuroki said, “Personally, I prefer Sieger.”

SAMURAI SHODOWN is immediately available on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Stadia. The Nintendo Switch version will launch on February 25, 2020 outside Japan.

At EVO 2019 the tournament organizers confirmed that there will be another EVO Japan next year with EVO Japan 2020 in January featuring games such as BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, SoulCalibur VI, Tekken 7, and more.

In addition to the three aforementioned titles, there will be more announced for EVO Japan 2020 later.

EVO Japan 2020 is set to take place on January 24 to January 26, 2020 at the Makuhari Messe in Tokyo, Japan.

This year was the first year EVO Japan was hosted, but the tournament has already been confirmed for a second showing next year from February 15-17, 2019.

It was also revealed that more info will be announced during EVO 2018, which will be hosted from August 3-5, 2018.

EVO Japan this year had ARMS in its lineup, which is not in EVO 2018’s main lineup this year. SNK also announced The King of Fighters ‘97 Global Match and Oswald as DLC for The King of Fighters XIV during the tournament.
