An Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes AMA with of Rabbit and Bear Studios appeared on the Nintendo Switch subreddit, and the team discussed the possibility of a sequel to both the original game and perhaps an Eiyuden Chronicle Rising 2. The Art Director and Producer Junichi Murakami, Director and System Designer Osamu Komuta, and the Character Designer and Studio Head Junko Kawano all collaborated and offered responses to people’s questions.

For many of the responses to the AMA, the exact person responding wasn’t mentioned. In response to one question about an Eiyuden Chronicle sequel, the team said, “We would like to expand on the story we have created this time in the Allraan continent. We cannot yet tell you how we will do this, but please stay tuned.”

That sentiment came up again later in the forum. An undisclosed member of the team noted, “Of course we have; R&B is sharing the vision for what comes after this each other. We hope you will wait and see how we can expand on this.”

As for the possibility of an Eiyuden Chronicle Rising 2, it seemed a sequel is something the team would only get into if there was demand. That is the prequel to the main game, which stars a few of its ing cast . When that question came up, the response from the responding was, “I also see potential in Rising and would like to consider it if there are many requests for it.”

Eiyuden Chronicle Rising is available now on the Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC. Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes will come to the Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC via Epic Games Store, GOG, and Steam on April 23, 2024.

Eiyuden Chronicle Rising Codes

Some backers of the crowdfunded Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising haven't received promised codes for the game. Developer Rabbit & Bear Studios addressed the issue via a Backer Update on the project's official Kickstarter page.

The post addresses the community and says that the team has been able to fulfill "a majority" of Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising codes. However, "a significant number" of backers have not yet received their codes in time for the game's May 10, 2022 launch. The team apologized to those affected, citing "a larger number of orders than expected." This necessitated ordering more codes from platform holders, which can take time to generate and distribute.

To compensate affected backers who wish to play the game immediately, the team is offering free Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising Steam codes to anyone they can confirm has purchased the game but not yet received their code. Affected backers who want to play on non-PC platforms or outside of Steam will have to wait for new batches of codes from their preferred platform to arrive. The team asked for the community's patience and promised that it would "own" the mistake and use it to improve its processes for Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes when its time comes.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is a prequel game to Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. It was offered as a "bonus game" while development on Hundred Heroes proceeds. It's also in a different genre, mechanically. It's a side-scrolling action title rather than a JRPG similar to the Suikoden series, as Hundred Heroes will be. Also unlike Hundred HeroesRising is available on the Nintendo Switch. Rabbit & Bear Studios has yet to commit to a Switch release for Hundred Heroes, saying it will conduct "technical investigations" to determine if developing for the platform is feasible.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. Check out Siliconera's official review.

Review- Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is All About the Fetch Quests header

There are times when Kickstarter projects will involve “bonus games” as stretch goals. For example, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night’s crowdfunding campaign led to Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon. Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is that for Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. However, while the Inti Creates bonus game is a compelling and rich title in its own right, Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is “just okay” and feels like a clunky collection of fetch quests.

CJ is a Scavenger. A tradition in her family is to go on a journey when they come of age. She’s searching for a Rune Lens bigger than her father’s to prove herself. This trek leads her to New Neveah, a town that had Rune Barrows discovered beneath it. This attracted adventurers in search of treasure to the area, like Garoo. However, something else is going on. Earthquakes decimated the area upon the discovery. Also, the town’s mayor disappeared, with his daughter Isha working as acting mayor and trying to rebuild the town and help its citizens. In order to complete her task, CJ will also need to take the townspeople’s requests, which will in turn rebuild New Neveah, and head into the Rune Barrows to find her treasure and solve the area’s mysteries.

Review: Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is All About the Fetch Quests

This means that players send the trio into environments, beating up enemies with combos along the way. The issue is that there are other games that handle this sort of system so well. Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin is one of them. There isn’t that same fluidity and natural progression to these continued attacks. It ranges from able to fine, rather than consistently satisfying. Of course, part of this could be due to the way characters work and are added.

You start out Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising with CJ. She’s a quick character with a short-range attack. She only hits directly in front of her. However, her special move lets her quickly dash forward, and later eventually in mid-air. Once Garoo s your party after a substantial amount of time, you get a slower character with a longer reach that goes in an arch that can hit above him and a parry special move. It also means you unlock the Link Attack that lets you swap between the two for a combo with greater reach and more damage. Filling up the first Stamp Card increases the Link Attack combo by one.

Review: Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is All About the Fetch Quests

But I didn’t feel like things really started to click until Isha s the party. This happens many, many hours into the game. (So many that I started to wonder if she was the first Stamp Card reward.) She’s the only ranged unit of the three, with homing spells that lock in on opponents when you’re close enough. Which means then you can start getting tactical by using her spell to hit a distant enemy, then trigger the Link Attack to let CJ or Garoo dash close and deal more damage.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising also wastes no time in getting tedious. There is town-building here. But most of the game relies on getting a quest that involves heading into one of two dungeons to defeat certain foes or collect certain items. After which you heading back to the hub to claim a stamp, progress the story, and do it all over again. Due to the pacing, you’ll spend hours in the same parts of the Great Forest and Quarry before finally getting Rune Barrows access to a handful of new spaces. Since the a lot of the enemies are palette-swaps and getting certain items for new quests means buying better versions of tools and retreading the same spaces, it starts feeling bland.

Review: Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is All About the Fetch Quests

Especially since there are some light Metroidvania elements. You’ll find elemental pillars blocking your progress in areas like the Great Forest and Quarry. You can’t get past them unless you get a Rune Lens element, equip the element that matches it, and go back to attack it. Which means if you want to 100% a map, you’ll need to get all the elements and go spelunking again. Though getting elements is required to progress the story, you’ll at least already eventually get things like the earth rune.

As for the appearance, Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising manages to look both interesting and cheap at the same time. The character designs and environments are good! There are some novel ideas. I liked the look of the 3D environments. Except the characters and enemies are all essentially 2D, rigged puppets that look like they were pulled from a mobile game. There are games that handle the juxtaposition of 2D and 3D well. That isn’t always the case here.

CJ

I get the feeling that unless someone is extremely invested in Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, they won’t get anything out of Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising. The background it offers for characters like CJ, Garoo, and Isha and the series’ world is great! It’s pretty valuable, in of lore and establishing a mood. But the actual experience is average and takes a while to get interesting. It never really hooked me. Rather, it made me want to go back to other games that did it better.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is available for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising Release Date Set

People won’t have to wait long for the Eiyuden Chronicles: Rising release date. The prelude to Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes proper will appear on May 10, 2022. That date applies to every platform. People will be able to find it on the PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and PC.

As a reminder, Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising was a Kickstarter stretch goal. It is a supplemental companion game that plays very differently from the main RPG. It focuses on only three characters. The small town of New Neveah is suddenly home of the Runebarrows, an area attracting adventurers with the promise of treasure like Rune-Lenses. CJ comes there in search of exploring to prove herself, as all young Scavengers must. Along the way, people meet the young mayor Isha. When her father disappeared, she stepped up to help rebuild the village and keep people going. There’s also Garoo, a warrior who’s in town acting as a sort of guard.

It is also more of an action-RPG. This is a 2D, side-scrolling sort of title. You head into an area, swap between your three characters to fight foes, and gather items like artifacts and materials for quests.

The Eiyuden Chronicles: Rising release date is May 10, 2022. It will appear on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes has a tentative 2023 release window. It will appear on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC. It will also come to whatever Nintendo console appears after the Switch.

Eiyuden Chronicle March 2022 Update Confirms Rising is ‘Nearly Finished’

The Eiyuden Chronicle March 2022 update from Rabbit and Bear Studios staff Yoshitaka Murayama
and Junichi Murakami included an update on the spin-off. Both Murayama and Murakami noted that Natsume Atari is close to completing Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising. Murayama also noted that the team playtested the action-RPG spin-off. Meanwhile, Murakami announced he is its supervising director.

Murayama talked about Eiyuden Chronicles: Rising’s progress first. He noted right away, “Development for Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising has entered the final stages.” He also reminded people Tadashi Satomi wrote the story for this spin-off. In the past, Satomi also worked on the scenarios for games like the Persona 2 installments and The Caligula Effect.

As for Murakami, here is part of his statement.

That's right, our partners in the Eiyuden Chronicle project, Natsume Atari, are nearly finished with the companion game Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising, and I've been taking a break from the main game these last few months to work as supervising director for it. It's been a while since I last worked on an Action RPG, so getting to do so was a thrill, and really took me back to my time working with IGA as director on the Castlevania series.

Back then, any one team member would be juggling multiple roles within development, and we had to devise ways to keep the development process fun and enjoyable despite how tough it was being a small team working against tight deadlines. I definitely felt that same atmosphere of fun and positivity with the Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising team.

In addition to confirming the game’s progress, its Mine Dungeon appeared. There’s concept art showing it off. Murakami also noted that it “is going to be a very large dungeon.”

Before Eiyuden Chronicle proper, people will be able to explore a part of its world and meet some of its characters with Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising. Granted, it’s a very different sort of game. This one is an action-RPG focused on exploring areas and acquiring resources. However, even after only a few hours with it, it is clear both pacing and character development will be important.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising begins with CJ. She’s a Scavenger looking to prove herself during her rite of age. Which brings her to New Nevaeh to explore its Runebarrows. After saving Hogan from some bandits, she learns its Barrows do indeed contain Rune-Lenses, and he brings her into town. While acting mayor Isha requires everyone who enters to get a 100,000 baqua explorer’s license and takes a 30% artifact tax, there is another option. Filling a stamp card lets CJ earn a license so she achieve her goal. So, she heads off to help fill her card and earn her license, so she can eventually explore the Barrows, help build up the dilapidated town, aid its residents, and perhaps uncover the secrets behind its mysteries and earthquakes.

Preview: Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising Focuses on Character Development and Setting a Good Pace

What really helps Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising after starting is how it works to establish its characters. We meet CJ right off, and get a sense of her determination and personality. She’s extremely eager, and her turn of phrase helps establish her casual nature. We get an idea of the trader Hogan’s resourcefulness, as well as his frustration dealing with bandits and Isha, shortly after meeting him. Likewise, Squash the accessory shop owner and artifact appraiser and he both help establish Isha’s attitude before we meet her. (You will know the meaning of the word “rapacious” by the end of the introduction.) However, locals portray Isha and her plans in a different way, with the stamp card offer being a means to help the needy in town while getting prospective adventurers to do their part in an unexpected way. Before we even know Garoo’s name, we know his reputation as a warrior and that his presence is helping to keep the town safe. (Even if it also comes at a price.)

Likewise, that pacing extends to the quests. It begins with the lowest of stakes. That is to say, you go looking for a lost cat in the first dungeon, The Great Forest. But eventually, as CJ proves herself, you get to do more and explore more. You’ll get an axe to help gather wood to build a house, teaching you about resource acquisition in the process. Another main quest involves learning more about signposts and how to deal with dungeon bosses.

Natsume Atari

As for the battling, the early build of Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising reminded me of a simpler version of Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin. It’s a similar sort of action. Each character has their own sort of style and attack. CJ is a fast, close-range attacker. Garoo has a larger sword that is still a melee item, but offers a larger arc and range. Isha is the mage of the group and only ranged attacker. You have one dedicated attack button, and another for the active character’s unique skill. (You can also of course move around and jump during fights.) It works and, like Sakuna, relies on swapping to build combos to really hurt foes. (Though, I mean, there’s less zipping around since there’s no celestial reinment.) It didn’t strike me as being too complex in the time spent with the build I played. Granted, I did only see some very general, easy enemies and early bosses. But there could be potential here as you lean into certain characters’ roles.

Speaking of said characters, the designs looked rather good in this early Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising build. The thing is, I felt it looked like it used 2D character designs and riggings that looked similar to the kind used for characters in mobile games like Another Eden: The Cat Beyond Time and Space. You know the sort. It doesn’t look bad and developers can do a lot with these kinds of puppets. It is just a distinct look.

Preview: Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising Focuses on Character Development and Setting a Good Pace

It isn’t just the Eiyuden Chronicles: Rising characters that reminded me of Another Eden. Town structure and dungeon layouts did as well. You have interconnected spaces, which you explore by moving up, down, left, and right. There is also a fast travel option that lets you jump to important areas when not in a dungeon. Also, in town I did have a map I could turn to. When inside a dungeon, signposts are your fast travel points, and you need to be at one to quickly teleport somewhere else.

Even at this early phase, the sense of progression in Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising feels very natural and the characters’ development seems to be a priority. You’re gradually learning more about everyone both in your interactions with them and people who know them. You see them grow more interesting as you spend more time with them. You come to see New Neveah as a hub and respite, with excursions into the dungeons proving as challenges and resource havens. We’ll have to see how things all tie together once it debuts.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is in development for the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC. It is expected to release in Spring 2022.

Get a Better Look at Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising Gameplay

Ahead of Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, there will be a prequel game that involves building a town. Now before its 2022 debut, there’s another look at what to expect. A new IGN preview showed off Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising gameplay. It shows what it’s like to try and build up New Naveah with the playable characters CJ, Garoo, and Isha.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is an action-RPG, rather than a turn-based one like coming title. CJ is going through a rite of age as a Scavenger, which brought her to New Naveah. That’s where Isha, the town’s acting mayor, is offering folks a chance to search the town’s Runebarrows for treasure. Coincidentally, Garoo is there looking for treasure as well.

In the Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising gameplay trailer, it begins with the trio looking around town. They look around and stay in an inn, for example. From there, they head outside of town to deal with monsters stirred up by local earthquakes. Along the way, they’ll also use their tools to collect resources.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising will come to the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC in Spring 2022. Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is expected to release in 2023 for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.

Eiyuden Chronicle Rising Release Date

Eiyuden Chronicle Rising will release in Spring 2022. Rabbit and Bear Studios also showed a new trailer for the game during the 505 Games TGS 2021 broadcast. During the presentation, the developers revealed that this title will be more action focused and less like the first Eiyuden Chronicle game.

The broadcast also featured a fair bit of developer commentary that revealed when the initial idea for Eiyuden Chronicle Rising was conceptualized. The new trailer that was shown during the presentation also highlighted gameplay, and characters that will appear in the game. The developers have described the gameplay for Eiyuden Chronicle Rising as an action RPG.

There was also a breakdown of the general scenario of the game. This included some hints as to how Eiyuden Chronicle Rising ties into the first title. Three main characters will be available to control during the game, and players can at any time switch between the three in order to progress through the game. These characters are Garoo, JB, and Isha. Each of these characters has their own unique playstyles. Seven guest characters will also appear.

The broadcast is immediately available to watch through the Tokyo Game Show 2021 YouTube channel. The later half of the presentation is dedicated to Eiyuden Chronicle Rising and begins at the 30 minute mark. This also includes the first ever look at actual gameplay of the title.

A shorter version of the gameplay trailer was shown during the Xbox TGS 2021 presentation. Like this new trailer, it featured a brief look at gameplay, which primarily involved combat.

Eiyuden Chronicle Rising will release in Spring 2022 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.

Eiyuden Chronicle Rising TGS 2021

At Microsoft’s Xbox TGS 2021 presentation, Rabbit & Bear Studio showed up with Eiyuden Chronicle Rising. As a reminder, this isn’t the full Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, but instead a spin-off prequel. Also unlike the main game, it is an action-RPG.

Here's the Eiyuden Chronicle Rising TGS 2021 footage. At the 47:40 mark, they get into actual gameplay footage. This segment focuses on Garoo, who wields a huge sword with one hand. The character deals with some smaller enemies in the footage. And while they start at level one, we get to see how they level up by fighting.

As a reminder, not all Eiyuden Chronicles characters will appear in this spin-off. Only some of the people will appear here. While it does seem to focus on fighting, there will apparently be town-building as well. Also, the Steam product page teased that people who play it, then the full game, will end up unlocking something if they link the two titles.

Eiyuden Chronicle Rising is expected to launch in 2022. It will appear on the PC and be playable on the Xbox One and Xbox Series X. As for the full version of Eiyuden Chronicles: Hundred Heroes, it currently has a 2023 launch window and will appear on consoles and PCs.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, the Suikoden-like RPG from Rabbit and Bear Studios, will release in 2023. That's a ways off, but Xbox Game subscribers will be able to play the game at release, as it will come to the Game selection on day one.

A new trailer was aired during the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase at E3 2021.

The trailer showed off character art and gameplay footage from Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. Several characters that were added to the game as stretch goals for its crowdfunding campaign were shown. The game uses a "2.5D" perspective, with 2D sprites evocative of the Suikoden series moving on detailed 3D environments. The battle system will use a traditional 6-character system. The trailer also announced Eiyuden Chronicle Rising, a smaller title set to release in 2022. It appears to be a 2D fighting game or brawler that uses assets and characters from Hundred Heroes.

The game's developer, Rabbit and Bear Studios, is comprised of JRPG development veterans. Studio head Yoshitaka Murayama worked on Suikoden 1 and 2. Director Osamu Komuta contributed to the Suikoden series, while other team have worked on classic titles like Castlevania and Wild Arms.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes and Eiyuden Chronicle Rising are in development and set for release on Xbox consoles and PC in 2023 and 2022, respectively. Though Hundred Heroes was previously targeted for PS4, PS5, and Nintendo hardware release as well, the official site no longer shows those platforms on the release slate.
