Hobonichi is also showcasing a physical sample of the new collaboration watch at its storefronts. The sample is immediately viewable at Tobichi Tokyo until February 27, 2024. The company will then move it to Shinsaibashi Parco in Osaka on March 1-17, 2024. The watch will return to Tobichi Tokyo for a final showing on March 20-24, 2024.

The GW-6900MOT24-4JR Earthbound G-Shock watch will be available for purchase via lottery on March 14-25, 2024. The item will also be a part of Earthbound's 30th anniversary celebrations, following its original release for Super Famicom (SNES) in 1994 in Japan as Mother 2.

game genome

NHK has revealed its line-up of games that its TV show Game Genome will cover in season 2. It’ll start airing its episode on Final Fantasy XIV on January 10, 2024. [Thanks, 4Gamer!]

There will be ten episodes in total. The list of games that Game Genome will cover is:

  • Final Fantasy XIV (January 10, 2024)
  • Street Fighter series (January 17, 2024)
  • Journey (January 24, 2024)
  • Mushiking: The King of Beetles, Love, and Berry: Dress Up and Dance! (January 31, 2024)
  • It Takes Two
  • Power Pros
  • NieR Automata
  • Cities: Skylines
  • Fatal Frame
  • Earthbound

Each episode will end with information on the next episode’s release date and guests. While we have the concrete release dates for the first four episodes, it’s a little unclear what the order will be for the last six games on the list. As a note, 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of Earthbound, and Hobonichi and Nintendo have promised many campaigns and events to celebrate it. So they might give some information about the anniversary during the Earthbound episode.

Artist Yoshitaka Amano, who has contributed artwork for the Final Fantasy series over the years, has drawn an illustration for the show. The art represents the many genres of video games, and a genome surrounds the goddess in the middle of the picture. The piece will appear on the set as decoration, and a CG-animated version of it will appear in the opening.

Game Genome started airing in October 2022 on NHK. It offers a deep analysis of famous or beloved games, with the game’s developers appearing on the show to explain what makes their game deep or special. The first season covered games like Dark Souls, Death Stranding, and Life is Strange.

Game Genome season 2 will start airing on NHK on January 10, 2024.

earthbound 30th anniversary

2024 marks the 30th anniversary of Earthbound and there will be several campaigns, some involving exclusive limited-time merchandise, available throughout the year as celebration.

You can keep track of the Earthbound 30th Anniversary campaigns via the official website or on Twitter (X). As of the time of writing, the website is a page with the logo for the anniversary, as well as the same text as the press release. To summarize it, there will be commemorative merchandise, events that Nintendo and Hobonichi have never done before for Earthbound, and collaboration events. The team doesn’t know all the details just yet, in the sense that they’re still coming out with new ideas. They’ve finished planning out some, whereas they’ve only just secured permissions for others. So they cannot say anything for sure just yet.

Earthbound (or Mother 2 in Japan) first came out in 1994 on the NES. It plays like a standard or traditional Dragon Quest-like RPG but set in a modern (for the 1990’s) USA parody. The plot of the story revolves around a boy named Ness who, with his friends, discover that the Gigyas, an alien race, have filled the world with hatred. They travel through many strange lands and meet new allies to defeat the Gigyas and save the world.

Earthbound and Earthbound Beginnings are available on the Nintendo Switch if you have Nintendo Switch Online.

Mother 3 Localizaion Complications

EarthBound creator Shigesato Itoi spoke about the possibility of an official localization of Mother 3. As part of an interview for a new documentary called EarthBound USA, Itoi stated that he would love for people in the West to play the game, but there were complications with the localization. [Thanks, IGN!]

The EarthBound USA documentary documents the Mother franchise’s cult status in the US. It also touches on the development of the game’s popular fan translation. The documentary team's interview with Itoi marks the first time he has spoken about the desire for Western fans to play an official localization. He remarked that the fan translation was offered to Nintendo, but they turned it down, stating it “wasn’t quite as simple as that.” Despite his interest in seeing a release for Western fans, he has no interest in returning to the project personally as he has moved on.

Itoi’s interview is the latest comment from an official source about the state of any official Mother 3 localization. Producer Shinichi Kameoka, previously told Nintendo Everything that he would love to see it happen. Meanwhile, former head of Nintendo of America, Reggie Fils-Aime, told Bloomberg that Nintendo had little interest in a US version of the game due to the transition to the DS hardware at the time.

While Mother 3 still has no official release outside Japan, its predecessors, EarthBound and EarthBound Beginnings, are playable as part of the Nintendo Switch Online library.

The EarthBound USA documentary featuring the full interview with Shigesato Itoi is available now via Fangamer.

In the history of JRPGs, there have been many that have defined the genre as a whole since many years ago, and with the launch of remakes, remasters, and various gaming services, people get the best chances to play or replay them right now. As long as you have the right console or subscription, you can easily access some of them. To help people out, I gathered together some of the more notable ones easily available. Live A Live 4v294

One of the most groundbreaking games of its era, Live A Live was locked away as a Japan-only title for the Super Famicom until 2022. This game guides you through the point of view of six different protagonists from all points across time and space. The latest HD-2D remake of this iconic game brings all the original’s charm and remarkable storytelling to nowadays consoles. You can find Live A Live on the Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC.

https://youtu.be/4dExeEf0OOk

Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne 5p1c6b

The third mainline entry in the Shin Megami Tensei series has been praised by many because of its difficulty. Moreover, elements like the post-apocalyptic Tokyo setting and the demon negotiation mechanic make it one of the must-haves for anyone looking for an unforgettable experience. In addition, it also features Dante from the Devil May Cry series. You can play Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne HD Remaster on the Switch, PS4, and PC. Persona 4 Golden 375965

Persona 4 stands out because of its fun and endearing mix of turn-based battles and social simulating segments. This is one of the few games in this list set in a more contemporary period, so it recontextualizes many of the genre staples in very creative ways. Furthermore, the Golden remaster brings additional content that delves more into the already interesting base story. You can immediately play Persona 4 Golden on PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.

https://youtu.be/KXQqhRETBeE

Earthbound 35pd

The story of Ness in his journey to save the world from an otherworldly menace is one of the most remarkable classic JRPGs. You can play Earthbound right now on Nintendo Switch via the SNES app with an online subscription or as part of the available collection of games on the SNES mini.

Earthbound New Era Hats

Hobonichi announced a new collaboration with hats and apparel company New Era and the Earthbound game series (or Mother in Japan). This is the second collaboration with New Era, as part of the Hobonichi Mother Project. Three new designs will be available, and they feature iconic sprites and visual effects from the Earthbound/Mother series. Each hat will cost 6,600 JPY (or roughly $50 USD). [Thanks, Game Watch!]

The new Earthbound hats will only be available at Mother Street, a section in the Seikatsu no Tanoshimi 2023 Exhibition that will be held from April 29, 2023 until May 5, 2023 in Shinjuku, Tokyo.

The hats are based on the New Era 9THIRTY model. The three new models available are the Teleport Crash model, the SMAAAASH!! model, and the Skywalker model. You can take a better look at the hats in the gallery below.

The teleport crash sprite is the result of a failed attempt at using the PSI Teleport in Earthbound, while the SMAAAASH!! graphic is a result of dealing a successful critical hit. Meanwhile, the Skywalker model is based after the Sky Walker, the UFO-looking flying saucer that Jeff uses in the game to travel from Winters to Threed. In the English localization, the Sky Walker is known as the Sky Runner.

The Hobonichi x New Era Earthbound collaboration hats cost 6,600 JPY (~$50 USD), and they will be exclusive to the Mother Street section of the Seikatsu no Tanoshimi 2023 Exhibition, which will be held from April 29, 2023 until May 5, 2023 in Shinjuku, Tokyo.

Earthbound Evil Mani Mani Statue

Fans of Earthbound will have a chance to induct their shelf into Happy Happyism soon. On March 8, 2023, pre-orders will open for a "life-size" replica of the Earthbound Evil Mani Mani statue in Japan. Mother series creator Shigesato Itoi's Hobonichi Mother Project created the item, based on a one-off replica used for events. According to the press release, Itoi received an "overwhelming" amount of interest from fans who wanted their own copy. [Thanks, Dengeki!]

Like the original, the Earthbound Evil Mani Mani statue is based on the item (and enemy) from Earthbound (a.k.a. Mother 2). It's also known as the "Mani Mani Demon", and is a shiny, golden statue. It stands about 30 cm tall (about 1 foot), and is described as having a "heavy, comfortable weight." The statue depicts a horned figure (the Evil Mani Mani) standing straight and holding a sword in its hands. The bottom of the statue's base has the Mother logo engraved on it. A special sticker with the character "封" (for "Seal") is included with every purchase, in case one is concerned that the statue's ominous appearance may actually be unlucky.

Each statue will cost 9,999 Yen (about $74 USD). The pre-order period will last from March 8-29, 2023. Delivery is expected around late May 2023 in Japan, though overseas shipping is available from the official site. To promote the Earthbound Mani Mani statue, the Hobonichi Mother Project is also publishing a series of interviews with Itoi about the game, and the character.

In the game itself, the Evil Mani Mani is a mystical object said to spread the influence of Giygas and bring out human beings' evil tendencies. It was used to control the minds of the Happy Happyism cult.

Earthbound can be played on the Nintendo Switch via the Nintendo Switch Online SNES game library.
