In a recent interview, Dynasty Warriors: Origins Producer Tomohiko Sho, Director Mitsuhiro Oshima and Programmer Masamichi Oba talked about the newest title in the series and how the team worked on a different canceled Dynasty Warriors game before Origins. [Thanks, 4Gamer!]

When asked about when development for Dynasty Warriors: Origins started, Sho said it was during the latter half of 2021, since the team was near the end of development for Dynasty Warriors 9: Empires. Sho added that the development of Origins started with the idea of "going back to basics" as the core concept, as recent titles in the franchise had evolved to favor a more fast-paced combat in contrast to the tactical gameplay the series started with

Oba added that, before development of Dynasty Warriors: Origins started, him and Oshima started working on a numbered Dynasty Warriors game. This would have been Dynasty Warriors 10. The gameplay of this canceled title was an extension of the direction taken with Dynasty Warriors 7, with the game featuring a large number of playable characters.

Oba also said that some of the ideas in the canceled title made it into Origins. He gave a few examples, such as making the game easier to understand for those unfamiliar with the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and exploring the story at a deeper level. Additionally, the world map featured in Origins was also something planned for the canceled numbered title.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins will come out on January 17, 2025 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC. You can read our review of the game here.

Koei Tecmo has published the Dynasty Warriors 2025 New Year card on the series' official Japanese X . It contains messages from the games' producers about their plans for 2025, which also happens to be the series' official 25th anniversary.

The Dynasty Warriors series producer Akihiro Suzuki noted that the 25th anniversary will fall on August 3, 2025. The date is based on the initial release of Dynasty Warriors 2, which appeared in Japan as the first Shin Sangoku Musou entry for PlayStation 2 on August 3, 2000. As a side note, the release date for the inaugural Dynasty Warriors entry—the PS1 fighting game originally known in Japan as Sangoku Musou—on February 28, 1997, is instead celebrated as the anniversary day for the Omega Force studio.

Besides the release of Dynasty Warriors Origins for consoles, Omega Force will celebrate the fourth anniversary of its own Dynasty Warriors mobile game, which it launched for Android and iOS mobile devices in Japan, in March 2021. The studio is also planning more celebration projects leading up to the anniversary month in August 2025.

Meanwhile, Dynasty Warriors Origins' producer Tomohiko Sho noted that 2025 is the year of the Snake in the Chinese zodiac. He added that the Snake zodiac also symbolizes reform and rebirth. The team therefore featured an illustration that stars Zhang Fei, who is known for wielding the Viper Spear, and the Dynasty Warriors Origins protagonist to prepare for the new game's release.

Dynasty Warriors Origins will be available worldwide for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC on January 17, 2025. A demo version of the game is immediately available on the same platforms.

Aoni Production announced that Taiki Matsuno died on June 26, 2024, due to a hemorrhage on his right cerebrum. The Japanese live-action and voice actor was best known for his roles as Hajime Kindaichi in The Kindaichi Case Files, as well as Agumon and its evolutions in Digimon Savers—the original Japanese release of Digimon Data Squad. The actor with the real name Tatsuya Matsuno was born on October 16, 1967, so he died at 56 years old. Taiki Matsuno made his debut as both a voice actor and a live-action actor in 1978. His first voiced role was as the Little Prince in The Prince of the Stars: Le Petit Prince, which was localized in English as The Adventures of the Little Prince. The actor also appeared in the 1978 TV drama adaptation of A Fugitive from the Past with his real name.

Taiki Matsuno rose to prominence after he starred as Hajime Kindaichi in the 1997 anime adaptation of The Kindaichi Case Files. He also had a role in Yu-Gi-Oh GX as Jun Manjome, who is alternatively known in English as Chazz Princeton. He was also the second voice actor who provided the Japanese dub voice for SpongeBob Squarepants, taking over from Hiroyuki Tsuru since the series' fourth season.

The late voice actor also had many roles in video games. In Koei Tecmo's Dynasty Warriors series, he voiced Ling Tong and Liu Shan who debuted in Dynasty Warriors 5 and Dynasty Warriors 7, respectively. Taiki Matsuno also voiced Hiiragi in .hack//G.U., Igtenos Minarde in Tales of Destiny, and Hammer in the Xenosaga games.

Koei Tecmo has revealed Dynasty Warriors Origins at the May 2024 State of Play. The new hack-and-slash action game from Omega Force will be released in 2025 for PlayStation 5.

The usage of the new subtitle Origins marks a departure from the mainline series, which has used numbers. The latest numbered entry, Dynasty Warriors 9, came out in 2018. However, Koei Tecmo has also used subtitles for spin-offs in the series, such as the multiplayer-focused game Strikeforce and the strategy RPG Godseekers.

The reveal trailer also showed that in lieu of existing historical figures like Zhao Yun, Dynasty Warriors Origins will have the player control their own avatar who can also wield various weapons.

Omega Force's chief Tomohiko Sho previously teased that there would be three new title reveals in 2023. However, the team ended up only revealing two titles: Fate/Samurai Remnant and the now-outgoing mobile game Dragon Quest Champions.

At the end of 2023, the Dynasty Warriors series producer Akihiro Suzuki expressed his regret for not revealing a new console game within the year. Tomohiko Sho also confirmed that the team had moved the last title reveal to 2024. That title has since been confirmed to be Dynasty Warriors Origins.

The Dynasty Warriors series' development team from Koei Tecmo's Omega Force published its 2024 New Year's Card. The team has been known for sharing a new card with a Chinese zodiac animal theme every New Year's Day. As 2024 is also the Year of the Dragon, it features characters closely related to the mythical creature.

Two of the most closely related characters are Zhao Yun, whose courtesy name "Zilong" includes the "Long" hanzi letter meaning "Dragon," and Zhuge Liang, who is also known as the "Sleeping Dragon." Omega Force also put Guan Yu and Ma Chao into the picture, since the team used the Dragon as a motif for both characters' outfits. All four characters in this card are d with Liu Bei's kingdom of Shu.

The card also features a message from the series' producer Akihiro Suzuki. He noted that Koei Tecmo's own Dynasty Warriors mobile game will have its third anniversary in March 2024. However, he also apologized deeply for failing to release information about a new console game for two years straight since 2022. The new mobile game Dynasty Warriors M released in late 2023 did not count, since it came from an external development by Nexon. Suzuki added that his team might still need more time to prepare the new game, although he really wanted to make the reveal in 2024.

Omega Force based the character outfits in this 2024 New Year's Card on Dynasty Warriors 9, the series' latest mainline entry to date which came out in 2018. Nexon has revealed Dynasty Warriors M, a new mobile action game that it will release for Android and iOS devices. Pre-registrations for the game are now available worldwide, including Japan.

Dynasty Warriors 9, the series' latest mainline console entry as of 2023, will serve as a basis for Dynasty Warriors M. Other than action battles, this mobile game will also feature a city development system similar to Koei Tecmo's Romance of the Three Kingdoms games. The app store descriptions reveal that this game will have 50 characters, slightly over half of Dynasty Warriors 9's 94-character roster.

Nexon had previously run Dynasty Warriors: Unleashed, which was based on Dynasty Warriors 8. Its global version ran from March 2017 to March 2020. The company also released a separate version for Japan in September 2018, which lasted until October 2022.

The Dynasty Warriors series has seen more activity on mobile devices in recent years. The Dynasty Warriors 7-based game Dynasty Warriors: Overlords is immediately available worldwide outside Japan. In Japan, however, Dynasty Warriors M will directly contend with Koei Tecmo's own mobile game, which is still in active service since 2021 and has featured all 94 characters from Dynasty Warriors 9.

Nexon has soft-launched the Android version of Dynasty Warriors M in select territories on October 20, 2023. The iOS version and worldwide release will come later. The Apple App Store page notes that the game should be released by December 31, 2023.

Koei Tecmo and Nexon's mobile game Dynasty Warriors: Unleashed has still been running in Japan,  where it is known as Shin Sangoku Musou: Zan. However, that will soon come to an end. Nexon announced that it will shut down the Japanese version on October 27, 2022, at 10:00 AM JST.

Unleashed is a mobile hack-and-slash action game based on Dynasty Warriors 8. It appeared first outside Japan on March 30, 2017. However, Nexon shut down the global version just short of its third anniversary on March 26, 2020.

Meanwhile, Japan received its own version of Unleashed, which launched in September 2018. As the Japanese version is an entirely separate game, it was not affected by the global version's shutdown. It will its fourth anniversary on a somber note following this end-of-service announcement.

Even though Unleashed will cease to exist, there are still other Dynasty Warriors games available on mobile devices. Koei Tecmo released its own mobile game with Dynasty Warriors 9 characters in March 2021 in Japan, and it is still undergoing active service as of this writing. The company also gave license to CMGE and other publishers to release the Dynasty Warriors 7-inspired Dynasty Warriors: Overlords outside Japan.

Dynasty Warriors: Unleashed is available on Android and iOS mobile devices in Japan until October 27, 2022.

The development team for the Dynasty Warriors series from Koei Tecmo's Omega Force revealed an AR filter app on Twitter. The app would let s put a hat or headdress worn by characters from the long-running series. The team tweeted the post with the Japanese #AprilFools and #AprilFools2021 hashtags.

The Dynasty Warriors development team — led by Akihiro Suzuki — has been known to post April Fools jokes every year on its Twitter , so this AR filter is not the first joke coming from the team. In 2019, it revealed a set of candles based on the series' ruler characters. In 2020, it made a promotion poster for Kongming Eats as a parody of Uber Eats.

Dynasty Warriors is a series of hack-and-slash action games with tactical elements. While the core gameplay system involves beating hundreds of enemy soldiers with a single character, the player's performance also affects the tide of the battle and the morale of allies. The latest console game to date is Dynasty Warriors 9, which is immediately available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Recently in March 2021, Koei Tecmo launched a new Dynasty Warriors mobile game developed internally by Omega Force in Japan. The official Dynasty Warriors live-action movie has a release date in Hong Kong and Mainland China. It will be available on April 29 and 30, 2021, respectively. [Thanks, ZhugeEX and Enjoy China!]

Directed by Roy Chow, the Dynasty Warriors movie will cover the first two chapters of the series—the Yellow Turban Rebellion and the Anti-Dong Zhuo Coalition. The movie will also feature a younger Cao Cao who has no facial hair.

A new trailer for the movie also showed up to accompany the Chinese release date announcement. You can get a sneak peek of how powerful warriors like Lu Bu and Guan Yu can blow away many soldiers with a single swoop, just like in the original games.

The previous trailer for the movie was published in March 2018. Although China 3D Digital Entertainment Limited initially planned to release the movie in 2019, it was eventually delayed.

The Dynasty Warriors live-action movie will launch in Hong Kong on April 29, 2021, and Mainland China on April 30, 2021. It is currently unknown when the movie will be brought outside China.

In the game department, Koei Tecmo delayed the release of Dynasty Warriors 9: Empires. The new console game would not make it through the initial Early 2021 release window, as the development team is still polishing the game. The company instead focused to launch the internally-made Dynasty Warriors mobile game in Japan within March 2021.

Dynasty Warriors music is now available on Spotify and other music sites. Koei Tecmo announced that it has released a total of 800 songs from the game series on various music distribution sites.

The game BGMs released range from Dynasty Warriors 2—which marked the official start of the series in Japan as the first Shin Sangoku Musou title—all the way to Dynasty Warriors 9, the latest title to date. It includes BGMs from not only the Xtreme Legends expansions and the Empires stand-alone games, but also from more spin-offs in the series, such as Dynasty Warriors Online, Strikeforce, and Godseekers.

In addition to game BGMs, Koei Tecmo also published character songs sung by the Japanese voice actors who voiced characters in the series, as well as songs that were never released before. There are even playlists available on Spotify that are handpicked by Dynasty Warriors sound directors MASA and KOIKE.

Other than Spotify, the Dynasty Warriors songs can also be streamed on Apple Music and Amazon Music. They are also available on the iTunes Store, as well as the Japanese music sites Line Music, Recochoku, and MORA. The Japanese press release specifically mentioned that there are no region restrictions, so everyone around the world should be able to stream all 800 songs from the Dynasty Warriors series.

Koei Tecmo has published the Dynasty Warriors 20th Anniversary trailer on its official channel. It marked that 20 years ed since Dynasty Warriors 2 was first released for PlayStation 2 in Japan on August 3, 2000.

Despite being known as Dynasty Warriors 2 in the West, the game is originally known as Shin Sangoku Musou in Japan. It received a major genre change from the PS1 fighting game Sangoku Musou--localized in the West as Dynasty Warriors—and it defined the tactical hack-and-slash action genre where the player character's actions affect the tide of the battlefield and army morale in real-time.

The Dynasty Warriors series as we know it now is built on the success of this new genre introduced by Dynasty Warriors 2. With every new iteration, Koei Tecmo continued to improve the graphics and gameplay system while adding even more playable characters based on the series' setting in the Chinese Three Kingdoms period.

The Dynasty Warriors 20th Anniversary trailer shows the series' history from the first mainline title to the latest one, with their respective Xtreme Legends expansions and Empires spin-offs also included. Koei Tecmo has also been teasing a new game project for the series on the anniversary website, although this project has still yet to be unveiled as of this writing.

With Dynasty Warriors' 20th anniversary approaching, Koei Tecmo wants to hear fan that will be used to develop future titles from the series.

Fans can share their by partaking in the Dynasty Warriors Series Survey. The survey will be available until July 26, 2020. Those who participate will also receive a special wallpaper after completing the survey.

As for the survey, it has a little over 20 questions starting with info about the player and the devices they own. It asks about Dynasty Warriors titles played, what they like about the series, and their favorite entries.  Towards the end at question #19, it asks "Will you buy the latest release of the Dynasty Warriors series?" The next question asks for reasons for those who chose "probably not" or "absolutely not." Then another follow-up at #21 asking those who selected "Tired of the Dynasty Warriors series" to elaborate on their reason.

The latest main-numbered entry in Dynasty Warriors 9 received mostly mixed to average reviews across all platforms and regions, so it appears that Koei Tecmo wants to do a better job going into the next entry.

Speaking of next entry, a new Dynasty Warriors project is in the works for 2020. We haven't heard much about it since its announcement earlier this year, but with the 20th anniversary approaching on August 3, 2020, we can expect to hear a little something from Koei Tecmo.

Koei Tecmo celebrates the Dynasty Warriors series' 20th anniversary with a special website and a 2020 project teaser. Dynasty Warriors 9 also got a look at the collaboration costumes from Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These.

The first "Dynasty Warriors" game released in February 1997, as a weapon-based fighting game. The title of the game in Japan was Sangoku Musou. The first "crowd-combat" entry would be its sequel, Dynasty Warriors 2, which originally released as Shin Sangoku Musou in Japan, and it's the name Koei has stuck with since. And that's why Dynasty Warriors 9 is titled Shin Sangoku Musou 8 in Japan.

The history section of the website shows all the Shin Sangoku Musou releases since 2000. However, the Dynasty Warriors history list shows "New Project!" for 2020 at the bottom.

Koei Tecmo executive and Dynasty Warriors series producer Akihiro Suzuki also shared a message thanking fans for all of their . He explains how it started out as a sequel to the Omega Force team's very first challenge of making a fighting game. However, due to various reasons including staff wanting to take on something completely different, they decided to change the direction of the project. That's how the series concept of "1-vs.-1,000" came to be.

Producer Suzuki teased that Koei Tecmo began planning various 20th anniversary plans. He also added that they're working towards making game-related announcements soon.

Koei Tecmo announced a new event called the Musou Festival 2019 that is set to take place this March in Japan with info on series such as Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors, and Warriors Orochi.

The event will be held at the Ichikawa City Cultural Hall located in Chiba, Japan on March 3, 2019. In addition to info on the latest titles, there will be a variety of voice talents who will participate in talks and performances for the show.

More information will be revealed when the event’s official website launches on January 16, 2019.
