One of the cruelest April Fools’ Day 2020 gaming-related jokes came from FDG Entertainment and Game Atelier. The publisher and developer suggested that a DuckTales QuackShots revival was on the way. There were even four “official” screenshots. A day later, FDG Entertainment turned to Twitter to confirm that yes, this was all a prank. However, there was a glimmer of truth to this, and a story was told about an ill-fated pitch.

Apparently, FDG Entertainment did want to make this remake happen. It even got to the actual pitching phase, with the April Fools’ DuckTales QuackShots screenshots being part of that presentation. However, the necessary license and permissions weren’t granted. So, all of the images were rounded up and used in this April Fools’ presentation instead.

Here’s FDG Entertainment’s reveal.

The new DuckTales series is now airing, with a third season starting on April 4, 2020. DuckTales Remastered is available for the Nintendo Wii U, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

Sometimes, video game April Fools’ jokes can very much hurt, as they represent projects people wish were real. This could be the case with FDG Entertainment and Game Atelier’s DuckTales QuackShots. The publisher sent out a tweet suggesting the Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom developer was working on bringing QuackShot Starring Donald Duck back.

Four DuckTales QuackShots “screenshots” were shared. Each one has the same art direction as the new animated series currently airing on Disney channels. Three have Donald using his plunger gun in different ways, such as making a ladder or catching a ride on a seagull. One has Huey, Dewey, and Louie working together to attack a scorpion with a slingshot.

[gallery columns="2" ids="830927,830926,830925,830924"]

The actual DuckTales QuackShots game appeared on the Genesis worldwide in 1991, with a Sega Saturn version in Japan in 1995. Like DuckTales, you can visit locations in any order, but Donald’s plunger gun can get different upgrades that require you to go to different places at different times to ensure you are able completely explore every level.

The new version of DuckTales’ third season will debut on Disney on April 4, 2020. In addition, last month DuckTales Remastered digital copies returned to the applicable storefronts for the Nintendo Wii U, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

ducktales remastered

Capcom is bringing DuckTales back. The remake of the NES classic was delisted on August 8, 2019. However, you can’t keep a good duck down, as DuckTales: Remastered has appeared again on the eShop, Microsoft Store, PlayStation Store, and Steam. It is once again $14.99.

In DuckTales Remastered, players get to go through a full remake of DuckTales with hand-drawn art and the original voice actors. It preserves a classic and gives more people a chance to follow Uncle Scrooge as he attempts to find all sorts of treasures and deal with familiar adversaries. At the same time, it includes plenty of visual tune ups, improved audio, adjustments to areas, two new levels, an expanded storyline, and some quality of life changes for its controls,

While losing DuckTales Remastered the first time was quite a blow, the situation could have been worse. Physical Nintendo Wii U, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 copies were still available. Xbox One owners could even use it to play the game via backwards-compatibility.

DuckTales Remastered is now available for the Nintendo Wii U, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC digitally again. However, its Android and Apple iOS versions have not reappeared. The original DuckTales game can be found on both the NES and Game Boy.

image Xbox One launch title Dead Rising 3 broke the million mark along with the HD version of Resident Evil: Revelations. Capcom released the Nintendo 3DS game for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC last year.

DuckTales: Remastered, a remake of a Capcom developed NES game, over-performed, but specific sales numbers were not released. Originally, DuckTales: Remastered was digital only, but Capcom started selling the game in stores right before the holidays.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Dual Destinies reached projected sales.

Monster Hunter 4 for Nintendo 3DS was a hit for Capcom. The game was a strong seller in seller in stores and digitally. While the latest Monster Hunter game did well, Monster Hunter Frontier G performed lower than expected for Capcom. The PC/Xbox 360 online game was ported for PlayStation 3 and Wii U last year. A Vita version is also in development. Lost Planet 3 was also below expectations and mobile games, as a whole, underperformed.

Compared to last fiscal year, Capcom saw a boost in operating income from amusement machine and other businesses which includes character goods and guidebooks. Overall, Capcom's net sales increased 8.6% and Capcom booked 3,444 million yen ($33.8 million) in net income, up 15,9% compared to the previous fiscal year.

able content is doing well for Capcom, the company has revealed in its financial results briefing for the third quarter of the ongoing fiscal year.

According to Capcom, DLC sales are “already 7.7 billion yen, which is 10% higher than the plan for the entire fiscal year”. Capcom’s current fiscal year ends on March 31st, 2014.

Additionally, Capcom say that full game s of both new and older titles have been strong. For the first nine months of the ongoing fiscal year, full game s have more than doubled, growing from 1.5 million the previous year to 3.6 million this year.

This makes sense, given that Capcom released a number of able titles this year, such as DuckTales Remastered and Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies in the west.

Meanwhile, the sales of packaged titles in the west decreased this fiscal year, as compared to the year prior, by 900,000 units in North America and Europe each.

This, too, makes sense, since recent Capcom releases like Lost Planet 3 have failed to sell as per expectations in the west, and the company didn’t have a major title to help offset the drop in the sales of packaged games this fiscal year. (In Japan, however, packaged sales increased due to Monster Hunter 4.)

Capcom say their plans is to create further year-on-year growth for their DLC business as well as full game s, going forward.

When it was announced that Peter Cullen was returning to voice Optimus Prime in Michael Bay's 2007 iteration of Transformers, it was big news for fans who grew up with the infallible Autobot leader. When it was announced that Kevin Conroy was going to reprise his role as the Dark Knight in 2009's Batman: Arkham Asylum, fans who grew up watching the 1992 Batman animated series were elated (and throwing in Mark Hamill as the Joker only made them more antsy).

Fast-forward to 2013, and we find that WayForward Technologies has been trusted to remaster the beloved DuckTales NES game—and 94-year-old Alan Young hopped on the chance to voice Scrooge McDuck one last time. It wasn't just Young, though—ALL of the original voice actors for the DuckTales cartoon were onboard for DuckTales Remastered! Fans who grew up watching DuckTales were ecstatic, just as the fans who enjoyed Peter Cullen and Kevin Conroy were, and it's the fans who grew up watching (or playing) DuckTales, I think, who are going to be the one's most excited to play DuckTales Remastered.

In an interview with Siliconera, Rey Jimenez (the producer of Ducktales Remastered) mentioned that each of the five areas main areas in the game were designed to feel like an episode of the cartoon. As a huge fan of the NES version of DuckTales, I wasn't sure how I felt about the nostalgic 8-bit sprites being replaced by hand-drawn animations. After spending just over five hours beating the game, however, I can see that it makes sense for what WayForward was trying to accomplish the new style—and It might’ve been more of a problem if they didn’t devote the core of DuckTales Remastered to this concept, but they did, and it helped craft a completely different experience.

The animation in Ducktales Remastered is right on par with what you’d expect from WayForward Technologies—fluid, detailed, and executed in such a way that it really did make me feel like I was in control of an episode of one of my favorite childhood T.V. shows.  Go ahead—jump in one of those carnivorous flowers in The Amazon area, and look on with awe. Oh, and it’d be foolish of me to not mention the gorgeous, hand-painted-matte-on-3D-geometry backgrounds that garnish instead of pollute the game's environment (that one’s for you, Kaufman). Unlocking the background art in the gallery section makes these all the more irable, too.

Some have already expressed their irritation towards the constant in-game banter that “interrupts” gameplay, but with the option to skip past any cinematic in a matter of seconds, not to mention my partiality towards hearing Alan Young’s sharp-tongued humor, it never detracted from the experience. Although the characters might seem unfamiliar to millennial gamers, the humor is timeless, and the puns are gold (perhaps even worthy of a place in McDuck’s Money Pit).

Among my favorite additions to DuckTales is the stellar remixed soundtrack by Jake Kaufman, and a story that explains why Scrooge McDuck is hunting for treasures—and an awesome, re-imagined faceoff with... well, you’ll have to discover that for yourself. I can guarantee you, though, that you’ll want to show up to the final stage’s boss with at least three lives and full health.

On that subject, combat itself is still reliant on Scrooge McDuck hopping around on his cane, and the controls used to utilize the cane can sometimes be finicky, but not enough to steal more than a few hearts from you. I beat the game on normal with little to no problem. Hard mode is next, followed by extreme difficulty, which I expect to beat in order to unlock all of the bonus concept art, music, and so on.

DuckTales wasn’t a AAA hit on the NES, and you shouldn’t expect it to be a AAA title today. The NES had obvious limitations, after all—it couldn’t use the kind of rich voice work that DuckTales Remastered brings to the table, nor could it afford to expand on the motives of Scrooge McDuck’s treasure hunting adventures. It’s in this sense that DuckTales Remastered represents the best of what the original DuckTales game could have been, while maintaining the simplicity that made the game special in the first place.

When you start up DuckTales Remastered, you can hear the original 8-bit title theme underneath Jake Kaufman’s brilliant remix—and I think that serves as a proper metaphor for how I experienced the game from beginning to end. The spirit of DuckTales is still there, but it’s got a new face—and a wonderful one at that. Taking something good and making it great, that's what I've come to expect from the WayForward team.

This love letter to the olden days of gaming was made by the biggest fans DuckTales, and by people who understand what made those platformers so addictive. It’s not for everyone, but for those who want a taste of the old, I can’t help but recommend it.

Food For Thought:

1. I mentioned some time ago that I hoped Capcom would trust the blue bomber brand to WayForward, and maybe if this is successful, we can expect to see that hope become a reality! (Just think of Kaufman remaking all of Mega Man X’s music)

2. You can choose to play through the game with the original, 8-bit soundtrack—but only after you beat the game (on any difficulty) at least once.

3. Do yourself a favor, and before you select your first venue for adventure, go into McDuck’s safe. Jump from the top, and enjoy the detail put into bringing McDuck’s character to life.

The two biggest changes in DuckTales remastered is a new lava-themed final level and a story that explains why Scrooge McDuck is scouring the world for legendary treasures.

"The Money Bin is an introduction to the story and a tutorial. It sets up why you're trying to find these legendary treasures," producer Rey Jimenez said to Siliconera. "As you go through the Money Bin you find out the Beagle Boys took all of your money. Big Time, the leader of the Beagle Boys, you fight him. Then you find out why Scrooge is going after all these treasures, but I won't spoil that."

"We could have gone the easy route and had the same things as the NES [version], but made it prettier," Jimenez added "As we added a lot of VO work and more Ducktales TV show presentation to it, it made sense to make each level like an episode. To make it feel like an episode of the cartoon, you need to have that explanation of what you're doing and why you're doing it. The guys at WayForward wanted to present a whole story of why you were going to Himalayas and collecting parts."

matroxveturagrab_012

Capcom made other changes to DuckTales Remastered after showing the game to players during focus groups. One thing they noticed is younger kids went straight for the legendary treasure instead of exploring. This inspired the addition of a map, which you get if you play DuckTales Remastered in easy or normal mode. Easy mode gives players a full map while normal mode just has a beacon with the treasure's location. Hard mode is the original DuckTales with a few changes. In all difficulty levels, platforming was adjusted to show players the difference between pits that were deathtraps and pits players can jump down. Pits that lead to a new route are distinguished with a hanging vine or chain.

After completing DuckTales Remastered you unlock 8-bit music mode, which has all of the original music from the NES game and new chiptune tracks made for the new areas. The game also has a gallery where you can unlock concept art and music. If you finish the game on hard mode you'll unlock extreme mode which changes how much health and how many lives you have.

Game has a galley where you can purchase music, concept art from the gallery. Unlock 8 bit music mode after completeing the game, and you get new music even for the new areas

Finish on hard unlock extreme mode, changes how much health and lives you have.

Capcom brought a new build of Ducktales Remastered to Comic-Con with the Himalayas level which started different from the NES games. WayForward added a little backstory that explained what Uncle Scrooge was doing there in the first place. Launchpad McQuack crash landed Uncle Scrooge's plane on the snowy mountains. Before Scrooge can return to Duckburg you have to find the missing part of the plane. Scrooge tells Launchpad to work on the plane while he searches for it and sternly tells Launchpad won't get paid any overtime. Cold, Uncle Scrooge. Ducktales Remastered appears to have a lot of cutscenes like this.

matroxveturagrab_009 matroxveturagrab_014

The Himalayas level has two main enemies mountain goats that jump towards Scrooge and rabbits that burrow through the snow. When you drop into the underground caves there are spiders drop down from the ceiling and hockey ducks that slapshot stones at Uncle Scrooge. Unlike other platformers, jumping on an enemy isn't enough to defeat them. You have to "pogo jump" by pressing jump and then pogo to bounce on foes. Ducktales Remastered uses the control scheme from Ducktales 2 so you don't have to hold down and press the pogo button. If you prefer the classic control scheme you can select "hard pogo" from the options menu. I like to pogo through levels, but you can't do that in the Himalayas. If you miss a pogo jump, Uncle Scrooge gets stuck in the snow and is left defensive-less for a few seconds. That stays true to the NES game.

matroxveturagrab_019 matroxveturagrab_020

The original Ducktales also had many secrets behind invisible walls. Ducktales Remastered makes these much easier to find by *removing* the wall when Uncle Scrooge is standing next to a secret area. When I hopped to a corner a wall vanished and behind it was a heart that increased Scrooge's maximum life.

Ducktales Remastered comes out on August 13 for PlayStation 3, Wii U, and PC. Xbox 360 gets the game on September 11.
