Japanese role-playing games are arguably in a new golden era right now. 2024 saw the release of so many monumental titles. Persona 3 Reload, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, and many more. But what is the overall best JRPG of 2024? We asked the Siliconera staff to let us know their picks for the best JRPG from this year.

Siliconera Speaks Up: Best Overall JRPG of 2024 6i6wg

It has to be Final Fantasy VII Rebirth for me. It really built on the original FFVII so well. The characters are great. I loved visiting the rest of the world. It was just so much fun and deserves to be celebrated. -- Jenni

Dragon's Dogma 2. Hands Down. No game I played this year feels like Dragon's Dogma 2 and the meta layers of Itsuno's hand and the world the team crafted are genuinely unlike anything I've had the pleasure of dancing with in games since Dragon's Dogma and Dark Arisen. There is not a feeling on the planet like hitting a dragon with an uppercut so hard it falls flat on its back, tossing your partners at enemies and them learning to throw you too.

Then there is the breadth of environments and things that can just happen to you from falling down a hill right into a horde of skeletons by tripping wrongly or helping a guy get over his back pain only for a griffon to descend from on high and land right on top of him. Controversy about its content aside, this game left an indelible mark on my heart I don't think much is going to come close to touching in a long, long while. -- John

This might be a controversial take, but I actually separate the overall Game of the Year conversation from the best JRPG. Sometimes they overlap and other times they don’t. I think 2024 is a case of the latter. While Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is my GOTY (or maybe Infinity Nikki; we’ll see), I think Metaphor: ReFantazio, technically, does a better job of being a pure JRPG.

The world is thrilling to explore, the turn-based combat from Atlus continues to define the genre, and the characters and story are at least spectacular through the Martira Arc. Metaphor is the best JRPG of 2024 for me. That said, I have to give a special shout out to The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak, FFXIV Dawntrail, and Fantasian: Neo Dimension, which were my runner-ups this year in that order. -- Cody

What is your personal pick for the best JRPG of 2024? I would love to know! Be sure to tell us in the comments below.

Dragons Dogma 2 Patch

Capcom has released a new Dragon’s Dogma 2 patch that added enhanced graphics options for PS5 Pro s. It also, as usual, addressed various bugs across all platforms. It is available as of October 31, 2024.

The Dragon's Dogma 2 patch introduces “PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution” (PSSR), which uses AI upscaling to improve visual clarity on the PS5 Pro. Additionally, a new “Balanced” graphics setting lets PS5 Pro players choose a middle ground between performance and visual quality.

When it comes to the bug fixes in the Dragon's Dogma 2 update, those are across all platforms. The notes for them can also get a bit specific. The patch resolves a progression bug in the “Nesting Troubles” quest, during which the quest would fail to advance even after players threw the required poison jar. Additional adjustments address issues with pawns with “Calm” or “Straightforward” traits, who would stop moving after attempting the “Levitate” action. Capcom also corrected a bug causing the spell "Maelstrom" to become excessively powerful when Myrddin was part of the player’s party. A mini-map glitch that caused unwanted zooming while ing through the Hermit's Retreat has been fixed, along with minor sound glitches in the character editor.

Capcom previously added new graphics and performance modes in its October 17, 2024 update for Dragon's Dogma 2. That offered enhanced display options across all platforms.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is currently available on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.

Dragons Dogma 2 SuperGroupies

Japanese fashion retailer SuperGroupies, who is no stranger to video game collaborations, will release a watch and other accessories inspired by Dragon's Dogma 2. Other items include a jacket and backpack. Consumers can pre-order these items from October 29 to November 18, 2024. The bag and watch ship in April 2025, with the jacket to ship in February 2025. International shipping is available.

As mentioned above, SuperGroupies will release an inspired watch, jacket and bag. The watch is the most expensive item, coming in at 33,000 yen or $215, with the jacket costing 24,200 yen which is around $157, and the bag at 20,900 yen or $136.

https://twitter.com/Super_Groupies/status/1851625605353324758

The Dragon's Dogma 2 inspired watch features a map of Teyvat on the faceplate, the continent on which the game takes place. The outer dial of the watch features the same iconography of a sun to more or less let you check what time of day it is as a glance since it rotates.

While some SuperGroupies collaborations can tend to have more "branded" items, this collection seems more subdued. For example, the logo of the game itself and the summoning sign for Pawns are on the inside of the jacket itself. However, the bag does feature the logo of the game at the top, which makes it the most overtly branded item in the collection

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is available on PlayStation 5Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The Dragon's Dogma 2 SuperGroupies watch and accessories will ship in early 2025.

The Dragon eating the Arisen's Heart in Dragon's Dogma 2

On October 17, 2024, Capcom's Dragon's Dogma 2 received an update that gives players on all platform access to Performance Mode and Graphics mode in their display options. Players now have the choice of what they want to prioritize on their preferred system, on either console or PC.

In a post on Twitter, Capcom detailed the patch, and broke down what each mode will offer players of Dragon's Dogma 2.

You can view the Tweet below:

https://twitter.com/DragonsDogma/status/1846729433958568380

Dragon's Dogma 2's Performance Mode prioritizes framerate and will allow players to maintain 50-60 FPS on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X during gameplay. Xbox Series S' performance mode will hit 35-40 FPS and Steam will vary depending on the individual specs of players' PCs. The resolution during Performance mode will be a 2160p output resolution and a 1728p rendering resolution on PS5 and Xbox Series X, while the Xbox Series S will feature a 2160p output resolution and a 1440p rendering resolution. Similarly, Steam will allow for variable results depending on the PC specifications.

Graphics Mode will focus on higher fidelity at 2160p rendering and output resolutions on both PS5 and Xbox Series X. The Xbox Series S will stay at a 2160p output and a 1440p rendering resolution. Specs for the Steam version's Graphic Mode prioritization will depend on the PC build.

This update follows a number of recent updates to the game including one on October 4, 2024 that fixed some small bugs, and one on September 17, 2024 which added a number of quality of life features, new gear in the Sovran's Armor, additional idle animations for the player and NPCs in various situations, and a Casual Mode difficulty.

Dragon's Dogma 2 is available now for PS5, Xbox Series S/X and Steam.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Free Trial Back Alongside Game Sale

Capcom announced that the Dragon’s Dogma 2 free trial is back again on consoles for us to demo, and the action-RPG is on sale on the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam as well. The end date for the sales and trial vary depending on the platform you’re on.

In the case of the Xbox Series X version of Dragon’s Dogma 2, the free trial and sale both end basically the moment October 2024 begins. Both will be available until October 1, 2024. People can access it until 2:59am PT/5:59am ET. It is $41.99 there, rather than $69.99.

The PlayStation Store hasn’t updated to reflect the Dragon’s Dogma 2 PS5 sale or free trial as of 1:15pm ET on September 18, 2024, though the character creator and storage demo is live. As such, the discounted price isn’t live yet. However, it should also be $41.99, compared to $69.99, just like the Xbox version. The demo and sale will run for this console until 11:59pm PT on October 9, 2024/2:59am ET on October 10, 2024.

As a reminder, the Dragon’s Dogma 2 free trial is always a limited-time affair, while the character creator and storage demo is always available. Capcom always recommends making your character in that demo first. This is because the free trial is limited to two hours. However, the save file you make in that trial can be used in the full game.

Finally, the Steam sale on the game ends the soonest. You can only pick it up for the PC at a discount until September 29, 2024. It costs $39.89 there.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is available on the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 Patch, PS5 Pro Coming

Capcom announced that Dragon’s Dogma 2 will be compatible with the newly announced PS5 Pro Enhanced features. It also confirmed that a new patch will be released for the game on all platforms and discussed what we can expect from it in the near future.

Capcom didn't announce a release date for the new Dragon's Dogma 2 patch. It only said it will release soon on all platforms. The new update will improve U load, reduce crash frequency, and offer various other adjustments to the game.

As for Dragon's Dogma 2 PS5 Pro compatibility, the company hasn’t offered details yet on how the enhanced features will change performance or fidelity for the game or when a patch with them will appear. More information about both the new Dragon's Dogma 2 multiplatform update and the PS5 Pro Enhanced exclusive features will appear in the future.

The last Dragon’s Dogma 2 update released on June 27, 2024. It offered a variety of quality of life changes to the in-game storage system, as well as a variety of other changes and bug fixes. It isn't the only recent addition. A patch to fix the frequency of the Dragonsplague appeared in late April 2024 shortly after the game released.

Sony announced the PlayStation 5 Pro model on September 10, 2024. The new console model aims to narrow the gap between the performance and quality modes available in several console games by offering higher graphical fidelity using the newly revealed PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) AI upscaling, as well as offering an increase in framerate.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is readily available for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC worldwide.

View of the world of Dragon's dogma 2: Player character and pawns looking over the vista

Capcom announced that it released a limited-time free trial for Dragon's Dogma 2. Players interested in the new action-RPG from Hideaki Itsuno and crew will be able to experience up to two hours of the game for free.

On Capcom's official Twitter , the company announced both that the free trial was live for those who would like to give Dragon's Dogma 2 a taste and that the game would be going on sale. It is 20% off on Steam, bringing the price down to $55.99.

https://twitter.com/DragonsDogma/status/1806597761401282581

The trial itself is also only available for a limited time. It will end on July 17, 2024 for PS5 s. Xbox Series X and PC players can take part until July 18, 2024.

Capcom also recommended that, for players to get the most out of their time, the company suggested getting the Dragon's Dogma 2 Character Creator & Storage app beforehand. This keeps the demo's playtime from being devoted to creating an Arisen and Pawn.

Capcom revealed that Dragon's Dogma 2 sold 2.5 million copies after launch earlier in 2024, bringing the series' lifetime sales to over 10 million copies. The success of it caused Capcom to favorably revise their earnings forecast.

Dragon's Dogma 2 is available on the PS5, Xbox and PC. The Free Trial lasts from until July 17, 2024 for the PS5 and until July 18, 2024 for the Xbox Series X and PC.

New Dragon’s Dogma 2 Patch Includes Storage Updates

The latest Dragon’s Dogma 2 title update appeared on June 27, 2024, and this time the patch notes are primarily about storage changes. While there are other adjustments and bug fixes, a lot of the additions involve quality of life changes to make it easier to handle the items you put away.

Some of the biggest changes have to do with more easily accessing items you placed in storage in Dragon’s Dogma 2. You can equip directly from there now, instead of having to rearrange your inventory to add the items you want, then change your armor around. Also, if you need to make some room in storage, you can directly sell from there. Previously, you needed to pull items out to do that too.

There is also a new cap on the amount of items in storage. Previously, you could only have up to 99 of each type of item. Now, you can go up to 999.

Here are the full patch notes for the June 27, 2024 Dragon’s Dogma 2 title update addressing storage issues.

[PlayStation®5 / Xbox Series X|S / Steam]

Adjustments and additions to the storage.

• Adding function to sell items from the storage menu.

• Adding function to equip armor from the storage menu.

• Adding function to equip armor from the storage when changing vocation in a vocation guild.

• Increasing the maximum number of items of one kind that can be put in storage from 99 to 999.

• Adjusting so that when an item is put in the storage beyond the maximum limit, the maximum number of items are automatically put in storage.

Adjusting so that it's easier to find oxcarts in the field.

Fixing issue where Venator's Leggings, Ring of Predominance, and Comforting Neck Wrap were unobtainable.

Fixing issues that caused players to be able to enter areas they should not be able to.

Fixing issue with purchase pricing for precious stones in Vermund being incorrect at some shops.

Fixing issue where the oracle's guidance would not for a necessary character being dead.

Fixing issue where some gathering points would not regenerate until the next playthrough.

Fixing issue where incorrect NPC portraits were displayed.

Fixing issues around opening the door in the Ancestral Chamber.

Fixing issue with hair display on characters of maximum height.

Fixing issues around U overload in certain situations.*

Miscellaneous bug fixes.

This type of update comes up regularly for Dragon’s Dogma 2. In April 2024, the Dragonsplague frequency was adjusted with a similar patch. An earlier patch after launch made it easier to get a house in-game.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is available for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC worldwide.

Capcom Earnings Forecast

In a recent announcement to shareholders, Capcom confirmed a revised earnings forecast, which is now higher than previously predicted. Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Street Fighter 6 are both credited as reasons for the revision.

The original earnings forecast was announced by Capcom on May 10, 2023. This original forecast predicted that Capcom would reach net sales of ¥140 billion within the financial year, for a net income of ¥40 billion. However, this has now been revised to ¥152.4 billion net sales for a net income of ¥43 billion. This is a significant increase from the previous financial year, where the company had made ¥125.9 billion in net sales for a net profit of ¥36.7 billion.

Capcom has stated that the revised earnings forecast is largely attributed to the success of Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Street Fighter 6. Capcom’s report cited “broad acclaim globally” for the latest Street Fighter while Dragon’s Dogma 2 has “performed favorably” in the fourth quarter. The company had previously announced that the game had sold 2.5 million copies. In addition, legacy titles have been doing well, with previously games in other major franchises continuing to sell well.

Capcom’s continued financial success had led to them announcing salary increases earlier this year. New hires will see salary increases of 30% while existing employees will also gain a 5% increase.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is out now for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Dragonsplague Patch

The latest patch for Dragon’s Dogma 2 makes changes to the game’s most controversial mechanic, dragonsplague. The patch is available now for all players on all platforms.

Dragonsplague has been a major source of debate among Dragon’s Dogma 2 players. With this patch, Capcom have made it easier to deal with. For a start, the patch reduces the frequency that pawns can be infected, while signs of infection are now more noticeable. Capcom stated the example of glowing eyes being more visible.

However, dragonsplague isn’t the only change made to Pawn behavior within the new Dragon's Dogma 2 patch. A number of changes have been made, mostly addressing unintended issues. This includes fixing times when players were unable to high five their Pawns, Pawns not guiding after offering and Pawns not speaking outside of combat. Pawns will now also be less likely to fall off cliffs.

The patch also aims to address a few other issues, such as adjustments to the mini map and various other unspecified bug fixes. There is also a new option to zoom in on character faces in menus. The full patch notes are available via the official website.

The previous Dragon’s Dogma 2 patch made starting a new game easier as well as making it easier to get a house.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is out now for the PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Patch

Capcom released a patch for Dragon's Dogma 2 on PC and PS5 on March 29, 2024, with the Xbox Series X set to get the update in a few days. As previously reported, the patch will add the option to start a new game more easily and make some amenities easier to access.

As well as fixing some text display issues, the biggest part of the update will be adding an option to start a new game even when save data already exists. While it was possible previously, it required manually deleting save data in the game files.

Other changes include making it easier to obtain a house in major cities and increasing the number of Art of Metamorphosis items available from 2 to 99. This item is what lets players edit the appearance of their character or Pawn, and the previous limit drew criticism due to the item also being sold for real money.

Playstation players will additionally gain the option to toggle motion blur and ray tracing effects in the options menu, or to add a 30 FPS cap. Steam s, meanwhile, received some fixes for display issues including when using the DLSS super resolution mode.

You can find the patch notes from the official website below:

[PlayStation®5 / Steam]

+ Adding the option to start a new game when save data already exists.

+ Changing the number of "Art of Metamorphosis" items available at Pawn Guilds in the game to 99.

+ Making the quest that allows players to acquire their own dwelling (where they can save and rest) available earlier in the game.

+ Miscellaneous text display issues.

+ Miscellaneous bug fixes.

[PlayStation®5]

+ Adding the option* to switch Motion Blur on/off in Options.

+ Adding the option* to switch Ray Tracing on/off in Options.

+ Adding the option to set Frame Rate at Max 30fps in Options

[Steam]

+ Improving quality when DLSS SUPER RESOLUTION is enabled.

+ Fixing an issue related to the display of models under some specific settings.

Before launch, director Hideaki Itsuno revealed that the meat scene in the game's cooking scenes was in fact real, rather than CGI. And if you're playing the game, you can also browse Siliconera's selection of guides here.

The Dragon's Dogma 2 patch is immediately available for the PC, PS5, and it will come to Xbox Series X/S soon. The game itself is immediately available for all 3 platforms.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Riftstone

Capcom shared plans for update for Dragon's Dogma 2, including making it easier to start a new game, get a house, and increasing the number of character editing items available. There is currently no set date for when the patch will launch, but Capcom plans to release the new features "as soon as they are ready."

The three most immediately impactful changes are listed as coming to all platforms. The first will allow players to start a new game from the main menu while they have an existing game already. Currently, starting a new game requires hunting down and manually deleting your save data. The second big change is that the quest leading to players buying a house will also be available "earlier in the game." The third is the addition of extra "Art of Metamorphosis" items to the Pawn Guild store. These items allow players to change their character or Pawn's appearance and was limited to 2 per game, with more available on starting New Game + or from the microtransaction store.

Additionally, motion blur and ray tracing options will be added to the menus of the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of the game, along with a few other optimizations for the Steam version.
