If you're paying a bit more than usual for your PS Plus subscription, I hope you're into Dragon Quest. This month's offerings from Sony are led by Japan's most iconic JRPG franchise, with no less than five full Dragon Quest games available. And if you're not into Dragon Quest, I also hope you're into Assassin's Creed. Ubisoft's sprawling series of open-world action-adventures helps bulk up the PS Plus Game Catalog for October 2022.

As a reminder, the Game Catalog is the lineup of able games available to PS Plus Extra and subscribers that goes live midway through each month. Those at the basic Essential tier can already claim their free games, which include Injustice 2, Hot Wheels Unleashed, and SUPERHOT.

Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age headlines the PS Plus Game Catalog October 2022 lineup. It's the "definitive edition" of Dragon Quest XI, and puts players on the path to heroism as The Luminary, a chosen one in the new world of Erdrea. Other Dragon Quest titles on offer include both Dragon Quest Builders games. The Builders titles blend familiar Dragon Quest looks, environments, and storytelling with a block-based construction and resource-gathering gameplay style. Players will need to explore a sandbox world and use their powers of creation to build their way to prosperity. Lastly, both Dragon Quest Heroes games fill the action quota for the batch. Developed by Dynasty Warriors luminaries at Omega Force, the Dragon Quest Heroes titles bring mass brawling to the fray.

The already-numerous Assassin's Creed titles on the PS Plus Game Catalog are bolstered even further this month, with the addition of the Assassin's Creed Chronicles trilogy (China, India, and Russia), Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Assassin's Creed III Remastered, and Assassin's Creed Syndicate. Combined with July's slate, that puts the majority of the existing Assassin's Creed franchise at the fingertips of PS Plus Extra subscribers and above. Notably, some of the games, like Assassin's Creed Syndicate, are marked exclusive to PS4, meaning they're not actually playable by s attempting to play them through a PS5. Early in the PS5's launch period, Sony pointed out that Assassin's Creed Syndicate was not "backwards compatible" with the PS5 due to technical issues.

There are games for those not into singular franchises, though. Inside and The Medium bring in a touch of horror, while Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker brings some ninja magic. Lastly, Hohokum and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City add whimsy and color, albeit from opposite ends of the ethical spectrum.

Finally, PS Plus tier subscribers see three remastered Yakuza titles, Limbo, and more added to the Classics archive, available via streaming.

Check out the full PS Plus Game Catalog list for October 2022 below.

Siliconera spoke with Dragon Quest Builders Producer Yuki Furukawa to learn more about the mobile port, possible updates, and its DLC.

Back in 2016, Square Enix created a Dragon Quest spin-off that blended creative Minecraft-style elements into the formula. Since then, Dragon Quest Builders showed up on multiple platforms and spawned a sequel. Now in 2022, Dragon Quest Builders is back again on mobile devices. To learn more about the latest version, Siliconera got in touch with Producer Yuki Furukawa.

Jenni Lada: How difficult was it to prepare Dragon Quest Builders for mobile devices? What was the most challenging part of the porting process?

Yuki Furukawa: The most challenging parts of creating the port were the sections involving the controls. The console version of Dragon Quest Builders is played with a controller, so for mobile devices, there were various issues such as fingers covering up a part of the screen and the lowered visibility of the screen due to its smaller size. Despite that, we had to achieve
controllability that delivers an experience as good as the one using a controller, so we made and remade many prototypes. We were able to arrive at its current form by receiving many ideas and suggestions for improvement from Producers Takuma Shiraishi and Noriyoshi Fujimoto and Yuji Horii.

Interview: Preparing Dragon Quest Builders Mobile

How did you prepare Dragon Quest Builders' mobile control scheme?

Furukawa: Since we couldn’t perfectly replicate the game’s console controls for mobile devices, it was necessary for us to aim on improving the controls by implementing unique features on mobile. That’s how we came up with remote placements, which is a feature that allows the protagonist character to place blocks on distant locations. The UNDO feature was also added, as accidental
taps are unavoidable issues when playing mobile games.

How will you update the Dragon Quest Builder mobile version’s controller to accommodate players?

Furukawa: We are aware of players’ requests, and we are assessing them with the development team. We will examine what we can accomplish and aim to apply updates so that players can have a more comfortable gaming experience.

There is no iCloud save on iOS devices at the moment. Will this be added via a patch?

Furukawa: We are currently discussing this with the development team.

Things like the Astronomy Set and Magic Carpet are sold separately as DLC for Dragon Quest Builders' mobile version. What led to this instead of them being included in the base game?

Furukawa: The original Dragon Quest Builders did not have any additional DLC, however, Dragon Quest Builders 2 did have a few pieces of DLC which were well-received by players. When development began on this particular title, we decided to include DLC as an additional challenge for the team, but we also knew that we had to make the game enjoyable without that DLC content.

With that said, as the additional DLC content is aimed at players who want to dig deeper into the game, we also knew that the content couldn’t just be an ordinary item. So, we provided bold elements that wouldn’t be in the base game in order to provide larger surprises and greater satisfaction for players. After going through much trial and error with the development team, we arrived at the current lineup.

Siliconera spoke with Dragon Quest Builders Producer Yuki Furukawa to learn more about the mobile port, possible updates, and its DLC

How easily could lessons from this port be applied to one of Dragon Quest Builders 2?

Furukawa: While the development team’s next project is still undecided, we certainly believe that the lessons of this port can be applied to future game developments. Please stay tuned for our future titles.

We appreciate your continuous .

Dragon Quest Builders is available for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and mobile devices worldwide. It is also on the PlayStation 3 in Japan.

Dragon Quest Day 2022 Video Mentions DQ XII, Dragon Quest Builders

Dragon Quest Day 2022 Video Mentions DQ XII, Dragon Quest Builders

In 2018, the Japan Anniversary Association officially dubbed May 27th Dragon Quest Day. Since it is officially May 27, 2022 in Japan now, there is a new video starring creator Yuji Horii discussing the series and things to come. Most notably, he also brings up Dragon Quest XII and Dragon Quest Builders’ mobile port. The former is still in development, while the latter is available worldwide now.

The video begins with Horii at Dragon Quest Island, the attraction at Nijigen no Mori in Awajishima, Japan. As he walks around the attraction, which has been open for a year, he shows off areas like the inn.

After a quick walk around the park. Horii offers updates on Dragon Quest games. He first noted that a few are planned for 2022. That’s when he said the Dragon Quest Builders mobile port will be released “very soon.” However, the game is available immediately worldwide. People can go to the App Store or Google Play to get it. A temporary launch discount is in effect until June 9, 2022, bringing the price down to $21.99. People can also buy add-ons that add an Astronomy Set, Boss Monster Model Set, Magic Carpet, and Pixel Ring.

During this portion, Horii also mentioned Dragon Quest X Offline and Dragon Quest Treasures among the 2022 titles.

At the 1:43 mark, Horii brings up Dragon Quest XII. He doesn’t offer any details about its development or a release window. Rather, he only says, “We’re working hard on building Dragon Quest XII, but there’ll be plenty more Dragon Quest to tide you over until it’s finished.”

Here’s the official Dragon Quest Day 2022 video. If you turn on closed captions, an English translation is available.

Dragon Quest Builders is now available for mobile devices. People can also get it on the PlayStation 4, Vita, and Nintendo Switch worldwide. In Japan, it appeared on the PlayStation 3 as well.

Kazuya Nino, director of the Dragon Quest Builder series, has been with Square Enix for about seven years but announced that he has left the company following the development of Dragon Quest Builders 2. [Thanks, GamesTalk.]

In a series of tweets, Nino starts out by thanking NAoki Yoshida, Noriyoshi Fujimoto, Takuma Shiraishi, and others at Square Enix as well as all the fans that played his games. He says that his seven years with Square Enix is the longest he’s ever been with a company, but he felt burned out after Dragon Quest Builders 2 and would like to try out a development cycle that is different from that of Square Enix, in search for a new development environment.

Nino has already decided on what he’s doing next, and will share more on that next week. In any case, he is looking forward to more game development moving forward and hopes for fan . As for Dragon Quest Builders 2, he’ll continue working as an external staff but says there won’t be any DLC or updates.

Before his time at Square Enix, Kazuya Nino worked at Atlus where he helped create titles such as Etrian Odyssey and Trauma Center: Under the Knife. When he departed Atlus back in 2007, he went on record saying that it was due to a difference in values he shared with the company. He also worked at Imageepoch on 7th Dragon. At Square Enix he was the assistant director for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn before taking the lead for Dragon Quest Builders.

Last week, Japan got a big release with the Yakuza Studio-developed action game Hokuto ga Gotoku on PS4 along with The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel I: Kai, and Final Fantasy XV Royal Edition. Japanese sales tracker Media Create released the latest video game software and hardware sales data from the week of March 5 through March 11, 2018.

The top title of the week is Hokuto ga Gotoku with a whopping 123,116 units sold on PS4 in its debut to dethrone Monster Hunter: World for #1 of the week. It might not have reached the 200,000-plus we see from the Yakuza series by the same developers, but it did exceptionally well for a title based on Fist of the North Star nonetheless.

At #2 we have Monster Hunter: World which sold 25,382 units on PS4 and is currently sitting at 1,954,272 units sold through retail in Japan. Splatoon 2 is back at #3 with 22,162 units sold on Nintendo Switch. Following are three more Switch titles with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at #4 with 17,329 units sold, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at #5 with 11,611 units sold, and Super Mario Odyssey at #6 with 11,043 units sold in the week.

As for other new releases in the top-20, we have The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel I: Kai –Thors Military Academy 1204- at #7 with 10,965 units sold on PS4 and Final Fantasy XV Royal Edition at #10 with 6,814 units sold on PS4.

In hardware sales, the PS4 sold 14,251 units and the PS4 Pro sold 14,112 units for a combined total of 28,363 units between the two for the PlayStation 4 family. The Nintendo Switch was the top-selling console with 50.5% of all console sales in the week with 45,084 units sold. Going by Media Create’s data, the Nintendo Switch has now sold 3,846,717 units since its launch in March 3, 2017.

The top-20 chart of the week is as follows:

Last week, Japan got three new releases with the most notable one being Dragon Quest Builder’s Nintendo Switch version, along with Rainbow Six Siege: Advanced Edition and Doraemon: Nobita no Takarajima. Japanese sales tracker Media Create released the latest video game software and hardware sales data from the week of February 26 through March 4, 2018.

The top spot of the week goes to Monster Hunter: World which sold 38,617 copies to chart at #1 for the sixth week straight. It is quickly approaching the 2 million retail milestone now at 1,928,890 units sold in Japan.

The first new title of the week is Dragon Quest Builders on Nintendo Switch with 28,430 units sold to chart at #2. The original game sold a whopping 319,385 copies in its debut (178,016 units on PS Vita and 141,369 units on PS4) but considering the Switch version is a simple port without much added to it, those numbers are pretty much expected.

Next up we have Splatoon 2 that continues fighting the good fight at #3 with 21,979 units sold on Switch. Following are two more key Nintendo Switch titles with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at #4 with 18,823 units sold and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild which has been selling consistently well at 12,675 units sold.

As for other new titles of the week, Rainbow Six Siege: Advanced Edition made it to #9 with 8,042 units sold, which isn’t bad considering the original game released way back in December 2015 with a debut of 23,402 and it actually kept selling well enough to remain in the top-20 for a while. Lastly, Doraemon: Nobita no Takarajima (Nobiata’s Treasure Island) charted at #13 with 4,948 units sold.

The PS4 numbers are going back to normal after the initial Monster Hunter: World boost with 20,070 units sold from the standard model and 6,499 units sold from the PS4 Pro model for a combined total of 26,569 units between the two. The Nintendo Switch was the top-selling hardware with 45,083 units sold to make 50.2% of all hardware sold in the week. Going by Media Create’s data, the Nintendo Switch has now sold 3,801,633 units in exactly one year and a day since its release in March 3, 2017.

DRAGON QUEST BUILDERS_20160626030710

Thanks to the licensing document for the US region Dragon Quest Builders demo, it is now known that Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PhyreEngine is now ed on Nintendo Switch. [Thanks, Resetera!]

Dragon Quest Builders was natively developed on PhyreEngine, so perhaps this is not as big a surprise as it should be. PhyreEngine is compatible with other platforms such as Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC, and even Android and iOS. However, Dragon Quest Builders seems to be the first Nintendo Switch game to confirm PhyreEngine .

Other games coming to Nintendo Switch that use PhyreEngine include Falcom’s Ys VIII. Well known titles such as Falcom’s Trails of Cold Steel series and Square Enix’s Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster were also developed on the same game engine.

DRAGON QUEST BUILDERS_20160626030710 Thanks to the licensing document for the US region Dragon Quest Builders demo, it is now known that Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PhyreEngine is now ed on Nintendo Switch. [Thanks, Resetera!]   Dragon Quest Builders was natively developed on PhyreEngine, so perhaps this is not as big a surprise as it should be. PhyreEngine is compatible with other platforms such as Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC, and even Android and iOS.
