Nintendo and Universal confirmed the opening date for the Super Nintendo World location in Florida. It will be one of the zones that make up Universal Epic Universe, which opens at Universal Orland Resort on May 22, 2025.

The Florida location for Super Nintendo World will be similar to the one seen in Universal Studios Japan. The attractions will be mainly the same, with Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, Yoshi’s Adventure and Toadstool Cafe all present. The new Donkey Kong Country section is also confirmed, along with the Mine-Cart Madness roller coaster. The park will also feature similar interactive elements to those seen in the Japan park.

The Florida location will notably be larger than the previously opened California location, which had to cut attractions such as Yoshi’s Adventure due to limited space. This will mean that the new park will be the first appearance of these attractions in North America.

Super Nintendo World is one of four lands being built for Universal Epic Universe, the fourth theme park at Universal Orlando Resort in Florida. The other lands will include the Isle of Berk, based on How to Train Your Dragon, Dark Universe, based on Universal’s classic monster franchises, and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. These areas will all be connected via a hub known as Celestial Park, themed around astronomy.

The Universal Studios Japan version of Super Nintendo World is also set to receive a Donkey Kong Country section in 2024, although its opening has been delayed.

Super Nintendo World will open as part of Universal Epic Universe in Florida on May 22, 2025.

People who want to visit the Donkey Kong Country in Universal Studios Japan's Super Nintendo World will have to wait longer. Universal Studios Japan announced a delay to the new zone's opening via its X . The Donkey Kong Country's opening, which was originally slated for Spring 2024, is now delayed to the latter half of 2024.

To compensate for the delayed opening, Universal Studios has newly ed two CG trailers featuring the Donkey Kong Country zone on its YouTube channel. The first one exclusively features characters from the Super Mario Bros and Donkey Kong franchises. It also shows the gate that will connect Donkey Kong Country with Super Nintendo World.

The second version includes live actors. This video will also be broadcast as a commercial ad on Japanese television channels.

Nintendo and Universal Studios Japan have been teasing the new zone since September 2021. In December 2023, the companies announced a Spring 2024 opening window. Although the opening time has since been delayed to late 2024, the companies are still on track with the initial plan to launch Donkey Kong Country within the year.

The Donkey Kong Country zone in Universal Studios Japan's Super Nintendo World will be available in the latter half of 2024.

Today, Nintendo announced a new batch of classic games for the Nintendo Switch Online NES and SNES game libraries. A Donkey Kong Country Switch port seems to be the marquee title, but we'll also get Natsume Championship Wrestling on the SNES side, and Immortal for the NES. This batch of three games will land on the Nintendo Switch Online service later this month, on July 15, 2020.

Donkey Kong Country hardly needs an introduction; it's one of the classic SNES platformers, and while it is divisive today for its focus on graphical fidelity, its soundtrack from David Wise alone makes it worth a try.

Natsume Championship Wrestling is an odd one. There were several wrestling games on SNES, but this was one of the most complex, with over 50 moves, a healing mechanic, and more. In the US it has the generic Natsume branding, but in Japan this game was a licensed tie-in for the All Japan Pro Wrestling promotion.

The Immortal is a curious title, one that first emerged on PC platforms like the Amiga, but made its way across several more before it was done. This is an action-RPG that saw mixed reviews on release, but is notable for its unusual mix of high fantasy aesthetics and arcade-like gameplay.

Meanwhile on the Japanese side, the set also includes Donkey Kong Country (as Super Donkey Kong, natch), but differs otherwise with Shin Megami Tensei and Gun-Dec (released for the NES as Vice: Project Doom).

These games don't drop until July 15, but Nintendo Switch Online subscribers have access to the full NES and SNES libraries, along with online play and other bonuses.

In order to celebrate King K. Rool’s newcomer status in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, developer Gregg Mayles and artist Steve Mayles, who were part of the team who worked on the original Donkey Kong Country, revealed a few early designs and concepts for the portly crocodile king on Twitter.

“Never expected this tweet about #KingKRool in #SmashBros to be so popular. As a moderately interesting bonus follow up, an early naming sheet shows K. Rool was going to be 'Kommander' and #DKC was going to be called 'Monkey Mayhem'.”

“Unearthed some very early #DKC Kremling concepts, which showed the origins of a far more serious and tough-looking #KRool as 'Krudd'. Also the military theme that was dumped.”

“Continuing the resurgence of interest in #KingKRool now that the portly croc is in #SmashBrosUltimate, here's the design for his end of game showdown in #DKC, including his 'standard' crown boomerang attack. A one page design is all he had!”

“Found some more #KingKRool original designs. This time it's his initial idea for #DKC2, alongside his crew of pirated-up Kremlings. Amusing to see that the TNT carrying 'Kaboom' is basically the gunpowder skeleton from #SeaofThieves. Same idea, 23 years apart!”

This Game Boy game was a follow up to Donkey Kong Country with a meta-story about Cranky Kong complaining that it was the fancy graphics that made the Super Nintendo game a success. Donkey Kong and Diddy then go on and 8-bit adventure to show him there was more to Donkey Kong Country than pre-rendered graphics.

Donkey Kong Land will be re-released on 3DS Virtual Console in Japan on April 4.
