Sony kicked off the PlayStation Store Spring Sale 2021. The first phase of the event is now in effect, with various games available for less than usual. However, there will be even more games on sale eventually. A second wave will kick off on April 14, 2021.

Disgaea 1 Complete is on the verge of conquering new territory. On January 30, 2020, an Android and Apple iOS version will appear. It also won’t be limited by regions. Both the App Store and Google Play have product listings that confirm a $32.99 price tag and English, French, Japanese, Korean, and Traditional Chinese language options. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

Disgaea 1 Complete is the complete, HD version that showed up on the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in 2018. It had all of the content from the past Nintendo DS, PlayStation Portable, and PC installments, like Etna mode, additional characters, and extra stages. It also had new HD sprites and textures.

In addition to the content from the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 release, the Disgaea 1 Complete iOS and Android version also has some new options. You can choose auto-battle to allow characters to go through fights and grow on their own. Cloud saves are present. It also has an option to speed up fights by as much as eight times.

The Android and Apple iOS versions are the seventh and eighth platforms for the original Disgaea: Hour of Darkness. It first appeared on the PlayStation 2. Then, it headed to the PlayStation Portable and DS. After that, a PC release appeared. That was followed by the Disgaea 1 Complete Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 releases.

Disgaea 1 Complete will come to Android and Apple iOS devices on January 30, 2020.

Disgaea 1 Complete is making its English debut fifteen years after the game first appeared in North America and Japan. To be honest, this new port does not offer too many additions or changes. So why are people still so excited and happy to head back to this world again and relive Laharl, Etna, and Flonne’s story? It all comes down to the timeless story and characters. This is a game that never gets old.

Editor’s note: There will be spoilers for Disgaea 1 Complete below.

Disgaea: Hour of Darkness came around at a time when we did not regularly see character explorations where we saw the value of antiheroes and antagonists. When Laharl, a brash and entitled young demon who decided he was the rightful overlord of the Netherworld, headed out to reclaim his throne after an unexpected multiyear nap, we had an opportunity to help him go out and be a brat. We would assault enemies! We would pillage competing overlords’ manors. All possible usurpers would be pulled down from their pedestals. Even when an angel descended from Celestia, Flonne, appears, we continue on our journey. (We just had someone on our side spouting about the importance of the power of love.)

What helps is the depth each character has, showing that they are not totally light or dark. There is good and evil in each of them. Laharl can be a brat, but he will grudgingly pay prinnies, try to impress Etna, show mercy to enemies, and fight people in power for the sake of his friends. Etna is devoted to King Krichevskoy, who took her in and raised her. She can show kindness to people like Laharl, protecting him even when being blackmailed. Flonne will actually get angry if teased about her physical attributes. Even though she is good, she is an airhead and is willing to fight against other angels, a sin, for the sake of her newfound friends Laharl and Etna. She is impulsive and gets carried away, but tends to have the best of intentions.

Even now that antiheroes are common and we have five Disgaea games introducing us to different overlords, Netherworlds, and people of varying moralities, it stands apart as an original. It reveled in its villainy, presenting us with characters who would not exactly be good, but were still too human and silly to really hate or fault. While we may see characters who are greedy and immature, like Laharl or Etna, they have redeeming qualities and offer a good juxtaposition when placed alongside someone like Vulcanus, who is truly evil.

Perhaps this is because of the other recurring theme in Disgaea 1 Complete: the power of love. Throughout the game, we see how love can redeem people and show their humanity. We continually see the sacrifices people are willing to make and the effect such actions can have on people. Laharl is alive because his mother sacrificed her life for his, becoming a prinny in the process. Laharl would have killed Hoggmeiser, one of the bosses and competing overlords, if his son had not come in willing to sacrifice himself for his father’s life. Seraph Lamington sent Flonne to the Netherworld on an impossible assassination mission to show that demons were capable of love. In one of the endings, Laharl will even sacrifice himself so Flonne, who had been turned into a flower by the Seraph, can be restored.

It is because of these things that I often feel like the segment introducing Gordon, Jennifer, Thursday, Kurtis, and the human invasion of the Netherworld by Vulcanus can be the weakest part of the story. While it is humorous, parodying classic space operas, and important, as it shows us another part of Vulcanus’ plan to possibly instill himself as a god, I feel it does not exemplify the themes of love and the balance between good and evil in the way other chapters do. Especially since it comes right after learning the Big Sis Prinny was Laharl’s mother all along and before Flonne revealing demons can feel love and group’s fight to avenge her.

A good way to describe Disgaea’s story is enduring. The Disgaea games do have some great gameplay that can keep people coming back and grinding for months, but it is Disgaea 1 Complete’s story and characters that keep people coming back. When Disgaea: Hour of Darkness first appeared in 2003, we did often see games where we rooted for characters that were “evil” and ruling what was essentially hell. Now, even though this series is established and we see a lot of games where we want the bad guys to do their best, it stands apart for its genuine sweetness and heart.

Disgaea 1 Complete is available on the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in North America and Japan. It will arrive in Europe on October 12, 2018.

Disgaea has returned. Which may not be all that surprising, because it seems like you can’t keep the original game down. Since its 2003 PlayStation 2 debut, it keeps coming back. The most recent iteration is Disgaea 1 Complete for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. Which is pleasant. It is a return of a good strategic-RPG that people have known about for years and now have a chance to play on more modern consoles without digging out an old handheld or system. Which is great! But, it is also a version where people should temper their expectations when it comes to what to expect.

The keyword with Disgaea 1 Complete is prettier. Or, if you want two words, then they would be high definition. The character sprites and maps are in line with what we would see in Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance or Disgaea D2. Aside from that, most of the other changes are relatively minor. Asagi is available as a playable character. She is ed by Prism Red, Prism Blue, and Prism Yellow. Turning Friendly and Enemy Effects off in Settings will remove animations in battles, making things a bit quicker. You know, basically a few little things appear to add an extra shine to Disgaea 1 Complete.

The random name generator for units is more troublesome in Disgaea 1 Complete, though. To assign a random name you have to choose a unit, set its quality, and choose “Done” instead of entering a name to make one appear. Except if you do not like that random name and want a different one, you have to completely back out and go to the character selection screen, reselect, then go through all of those messages above to get your new random name.

The thing is, Disgaea 1 Complete does not feel as different or full as, say, Disgaea 5 Complete for the Nintendo Switch and PC. Here is the thing about NIS’ Disgaea ports. They are usually worth owning, because the company tends to add something new to the formula. Disgaea 5 Complete did not offer any new scenarios, but it gave people every bit of DLC. When Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention was released, it added four more scenarios that were similar to the Raspberyl Mode DLC for Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice. Disgaea 1 Complete has the HD elements, a few extra characters, and the skip functionality.

Where Disgaea 1 Complete really shines is as the ultimate handheld version of the game. Previously, Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness and Disgaea DS brought the game to the PlayStation Portable and Nintendo DS. However, neither was a particularly amazing. The graphics did not hold up as well, especially on the Nintendo DS. The sound quality was far from amazing, compared to the previous console iteration. Both were mainly notable for introducing Etna Mode and characters from Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories and Makai Kingdom as playable characters. With the Nintendo Switch version, we have an iteration with much better sound quality than past handheld ports and the HD sprites that puts it on part with Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness.

The Nintendo Switch’s unique nature also is a fantastic selling point for Disgaea 1 Complete. This is the sort of game where it could be easy to get caught up grinding characters or delving into the Item World for Specialists. It was so comforting to play the game when the system was docked on a big screen in my living room and then, if I was about to go to bed or maybe visit with some friends, pop it out of the dock and continue the game’s grind in bed or when I was not at home. The freedom is so inviting, especially if someone acquired Disgaea 5 Complete for the Nintendo Switch and was spoiled.

Disgaea 1 Complete is basically the version you get if you somehow did not play Disgaea when it appeared on the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS, or PC. It has all of the major features we have expected from console versions over the years and is essentially like giving Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 players the prettier and more convenient PC version that was released in 2016. This is not a bad thing! Disgaea remains a great strategy game. It is a lot of fun on the Nintendo Switch, thanks to the freedom it affords. It just is not as comprehensive of a port as people might expect from one of the NIS Disgaea re-releases.

Disgaea 1 Complete will be available on the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 on October 9, 2018 in North America and October 12, 2018 in Europe. It is immediately available in Japan.

In an interview at TGS 2018, Nippon Ichi Software President Sohei Niikawa sat down for an interview, where he discussed Disgaea 6, if Laharl might return in the Disgaea series’ future, the appeal of Nintendo Switch, and what they would do with a potential PlayStation 5. (Thanks, Game Informer!)

Here are the highlights:

• Regarding the Disgaea series, Niikawa was surprised by the performance of Disgaea 5 in the West. While he has no clue why this is, because this is the case, they plan on making more Disgaea games and releasing them Westward.

• As for Disgaea 6, Niikawa confirmed that, yes, it is in production. However, it’s still very early in development, and what’s going to be in it content-wise is still TBD.

• On the topic of the iconic trio of Laharl, Etna, and Flonne, Niikawa states that that Nippon Ichi definitely does want to revisit that cast, as well as other casts. They are always thinking of what to do with the Disgaea series, and while Disgaea 6 is most definitely the most anticipated title, there is a lot still planned for the series.

• Niikawa finds the Nintendo Switch appealing for the fact that it fits the needs of many players, by being both portable and playable on the TV. But what contributed to Nippon Ichi’s decision to fully the Switch was Disgaea 5’s performance on the platform, especially overseas.

• If there were to be a PlayStation 5, Niikawa wants Nippon Ichi to be one of the first developers to bring games onto it. He’d like the company to continue making games for consoles and handhelds – not mobile, essentially. And that is why the general strategy going forward currently is to target PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Steam.

Last week, Japan had a bunch of remasters and rereleases such as The Last of Us and Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash, but the headliner of the week certainly goes to Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1 + 2.

The top spot of the week goes to Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1 + 2, called Rockman X Anniversary Collection 1 + 2 in Japan, at #1 with 29,270 units sold on PS4. The Nintendo Switch version charted at #5 with 16,207 units sold to combine for a total of 45,477 for the two-in-one bundle. Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1 which features Mega Man X through Mega Man X4 charted  at #18 on Switch with 4,246 units sold.

Last week’s top-seller in Taiko no Tatsujin: Nintendo Switch Version was #2 with 28,265 units sold. Splatoon 2 followed at #3 with 20,344 units, and Mario Tennis Aces at #4 with 18,067 units.

Other new titles this week include Collar x Malice: Unlimited at #10 with 7,695 units sold on PS Vita, Higurashi When They Cry Hou on Switch with 7,631 units sold, The Last of Us Remastered at #16 with 5,410 units sold on PS4, Senran Kagura: Peach Beach Splash Sunshine Edition at #17 with 4,535 units sold.

Disgaea 1 Complete had a bit of an underwhelming debut with 4,094 units on PS4 to chart at #19. The Nintendo Switch version didn’t chart in the top-20. Lastly, we have Dragon Quest X All-in-One Package (ver. 1~4) at #20 with 4,020 units sold on the Nintendo Switch. The Dragon Quest X package also released on PlayStation 4 and Wii U but they didn’t chart. It also released on PC but Media Create only tracks console sales so we won’t know how it performed unless we hear it from Square Enix.

Hardware sales took a dip across the board. While there were many releases last week, none of them were big console-sellers, and most of them were rereleases of some sort, so the low hardware sales is understandable. The PlayStation 4 sold 13,666 units with an extra 4,979 from the PS4 Pro to set a total of 18,645 units for PS4. The Nintendo Switch was the best-selling hardware with 48,370 units sold in the week to make up for 60.8% of all consoles sold. Going by Media Create’s figures, the Nintendo Switch is currently at 4,702,826 units sold in Japan since its launch in March 3, 2017.

With new players trying out Disgaea for the first time with Disgaea 1 Complete, the full-HD remake of the original game, Laharl decided to make an appearance to teach the basics of battle in a new trailer by Nippon Ichi Software.

The trailer goes through the strategy RPG starting with the battles that take place on a grid-based map. Since no proper demon will care about the honor to fight one-on-one, Laharl teaches that demons are all about ganging up on a single enemy with several of your allies.

We then get to see examples of the Geo Effects that add more depth to battles with either positive or negative effects on the field s. The following parts cover character creation, item usage, and flashy special moves.
