One of the things about the PS4 and PS5 is that both consoles are basically a major hub for some of the best JRPGs you’ll ever play. Thanks to things like backwards compatibility, remasters, ports, and both being generally attractive systems, it means a lot of developers and publishers take care to not skip over either one. It might also make picking a particular title to play challenging too. To help out, here are some Siliconera suggestions for worthwhile games.

Best Digimon Game on the PS4 and PS5: Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth 365k53

What’s fantastic about Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth is that there’s the whole collection element to finding additional Digimon, a compelling story, and a wonderful turn-based battle system. It’s a really great time.

final fantasy rebirth best ps4 ps5 jrpg

Best Final Fantasy Game on the PS4 and PS5: FFVII Remake 25l38

I suppose as a cop-out, I could say Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Collection would be the “best Final Fantasy game” on the consoles. It wouldn’t be wrong, and you should absolutely go play some of them. (FFIV, FFV, and FFVI especially!) But I’m going to go ahead and recommend FFVII Remake this time around. It’s a fascinating reimagining. And if you don’t like it, well, the original FFVII is on the systems too.

Best Persona Game on the PS4 and PS5: Persona 5 Royal c733j

Thanks to Atlus being pretty generous with the porting, people have three mainline Persona games on modern PlayStation consoles! If you’re looking for just one to play, however, Persona 5 Royal would probably be a good place to start. It has a great story that’s pretty identifiable and some fun dungeons! Plus, this version is really extensive!

Tales of Arise best ps4 ps5 jrpg

Best Tales Game on the PS4 and PS5: Tales of Arise 6v363h

There are so many amazing Tales games. Like did you play Tales of Berseria or Symphonia? But Tales of Arise is not only the newest installment, but something really special. The combat system is fantastic, the world is great, and it’s just a lot of fun to explore and interact with the people in its worlds.

Best Action-RPG on the PS4 and PS5: Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir 3h76v

Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir is such a gorgeous and heartfelt story. Though, really, it’s four ionate and enthralling tales. There are a lot of action-RPGs made in Japan that deserve your attention on the PS4 and PS5 for sure. (Off the top of my head, I could also recommend NieR: Automata, Ni no Kuni II, or even Star Ocean: The Divine Force. But it can feel like people forget about Odin Sphere, so consider that?

10 Best PS4 and PS5 JRPGs Dragon Quest XI S

Best Turn-Based RPG on the PS4 and PS5: Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age 46306y

Dragon Quest XI S is really something of an achievement. It’s a fantastic installment in a long-running series, and the “S” edition is even better due to the option to choose the previously 3DS-exclusive 2D version and see other extra content. It’s a great story with a fantastic turn-based battle system.

Best JRPG with crafting on the PS4 and PS5: Atelier Ryza 4f3n51

To be fair, a lot of the Atelier games will be an amazing time. All of them feature some RPG elements. But the big focus is on exploring areas, gathering ingredients, and using them to craft items for the main story and sidequests. It’s a lot of fun, and Atelier Ryza is a particularly welcoming and well-made entry.

trails of cold steel iii pc demo 10 Best PS4 and PS5 JRPGs

Longest JRPG on the PS4 and PS5: The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel 1-4 4i6s26

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel is a whole saga. Each entry, if you’re doing it “right,” will probably take you 70+ hours to finish. You can’t honestly play the fourth installment without going into the previous ones. So if you want to basically spend a year of your life spending more time with Rean and his friends than some of your own friends and family, go for it. (It’s worth it.)

Best PS1 JRPG you can play on the PS4 or PS5: Legend of Dragoon w3j1c

Is this stretching it a bit? Maybe! But you can play Legend of Dragoon on your PS5 right now, and I’m going to take any opportunity to recommend this fantastic title. It’s 100% worth your time, so don’t miss out.

10 Best PS4 and PS5 JRPGs Dark Cloud 2

Best PS2 JRPG you can play on the PS4 or PS5: Dark Cloud 2 5p6w3r

Really, this is genuinely hard recommendation to make, because there are so many fantastic PS2 games you can still play on the PS4 and such. Like Rogue Legacy is also amazing. But Dark Cloud 2 has such a fantastic concept, what with the RPG elements and rebuilding a town, that it can’t be missed.

If you’re thinking about an anime game, especially on the Switch, odds are Bandai Namco is behind it. The company is well known for handling adaptations of titles. Especially if it is based on a Shonen Jump series. This can also mean there are a lot of games from each one on different systems. As part of Siliconera’s ongoing chronicling of games people should play, as they may have overlooked them, this week we’re focusing on the Switch anime ones worth some attention.

Best Bandai Namco Anime Games on the Switch Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth

Best Bandai Namco Digimon Game on the Switch: Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition 2cn4k

Yes, Digimon qualifies as an anime series. (Why? I said so.) Especially since we’re recommending Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition here today. This is quite possibly a compilation of the two best Digimon games ever made. These RPGs are exceptional, and you can get them together for a ridiculous price.

However, a close second is Digimon Survive, which turned out to be way better than expected!

Doraemon Story of Seasons: Friends of the Great Kingdom

Best Bandai Namco Doraemon Game on the Switch: Doraemon Story of Seasons: Friends of the Great Kingdom 155zk

A lot of quality of life updates appeared in Doraemon Story of Seasons: Friends of the Great Kingdom. Which means it makes a relaxing, enjoyable, Story of Seasons Switch farming game with characters from the Doraemon anime even more pleasant. It’s lighthearted and cozy.

Dragon Ball Fighterz

Best Bandai Namco Dragon Ball Game on the Switch: Dragon Ball FighterZ 55yk

Dragon Ball FighterZ is a phenomenal fighting game. The roster covers characters from all different arcs and installments. The balance is perfect. Arc System Works’ did an impeccable job with the character designs. It is fantastic.

Though honestly, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 should get an honorable mention here just because of its longevity.

Best Bandai Namco Anime Games on the Switch Naruto

Best Bandai Namco Naruto Game on the Switch: Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 1e6m22

Someone unaware of Bandai Namco anime games and Naruto titles in general may not realize how good the Ultimate Ninja Storm series is and why they should play it even on the Switch. They’re genuinely engrossing and irable CyberConnect2 games! Their story modes can be a lot of fun. They’re a blast to play with friends, due to the character variety. The trilogy, which is also available on the platform, wouldn’t be the worst place to start. But I think the fourth one is just so much fun, especially since there’s Road to Boruto included with it.

One Piece Pirate Warriors 3

Best Bandai Namco One Piece Game on the Switch: One Piece Pirate Warriors 3 k1019

Koei Tecmo and Omega Force’s One Piece Pirate Warriors Musou games tend to always be solid anime inspired titles, and the Switch version of 3 is no exception. It’s also a good “introductory” game if you’re unfamiliar with the series. That’s because it starts from the beginning and goes all the way through the Straw Hat’s adventures in Dressrosa.

Sword Art Online SAO Alicization Lycoris

Best Bandai Namco Sword Art Online Game on the Switch: SAO Alicization Lycoris 244t2a

This is honestly a section that is very much a “your mileage may vary” situation. This is because a lot of Bandai Namco’s Sword Art Online anime games on the Switch cover specific arcs. So you might like one that covers a certain storyline you like more than others. Also, a lot of the gameplay can be similar, as these all tend to be RPGs. I think SAO Alicization Lycoris is the one I’d say is best, because there are quality of life adjustments, the combat is fun, and it tells a story I haven’t heard multiple times.

The plus side is, the Bandai Namco Sword Art Online games go on sale rather often, so you should be able to get one at an affordable price to test it out.

Other Bandai Namco Anime Games You Should Play on the Switch 125x6j

Okay, there are also a lot of games from Bandai Namco that are tied to different anime series or even studios, but don’t fit into the categories above! They’re all definitely worth your time though, so we wanted to call them out here.

For example, .hack//G.U. Last Recode is a fantastic RPG. It ties into the .hack series, retelling the adventure of life in an MMO before SAO stole all of the attention. You get the remasters of Rebirth, Reminisce, and Redemption, as well as the new Reconnection experience.

Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions is a shockingly good soccer game. It also is especially fun due to its story mode. It isn’t Inazuma Eleven, of course, but it can fill the void while we wait to see when (if) that ever appears.

Our Gundam recommendation gets weird too, because it never ended up released officially outside Japan in English. There is an Asian English version of SD Gundam G Generation Cross Rays
available, though! It’s a pretty great strategy game that taps into Gundam 00, Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans, Gundam SEED, and Gundam Wing.

There’s only one JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure game on the Switch, so it would feel a bit weird to “recommend” it in its own special category. But Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle R is a fun remaster that adds additional characters! It did take away the story mode, so keep that in mind. There’s a demo you can try for this one!

It would be kind of weird to include My Hero One’s Justice 2 above, given there are only two games. The sequel improves on every element of this 3D arena fighter, adding better balancing, more characters, and a still entertaining campaign. So if you want a MHA game on the Switch, the sequel is the way to go.

Finally, Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch also qualifies! Studio Ghibli was heavily involved in this charming RPG. The sequel is also quite good, but there’s something truly magical about Oliver’s original adventure.

digimon story cyber sleuth interview 1

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth helped renew interest in the series outside of Japan. The game has given people a chance to enjoy collecting and raising Digimon on multiple platforms, most recently preserving a great series on the Nintendo Switch and PC. Now, Siliconera’s had a chance to speak with Producer Habu Kazumasa about both of these titles. He opens up about its influences, the worldwide reception, Mastemon, and Digimon Story’s future.

Siliconera: Which past Digimon games most influenced the two Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth titles? How about which unrelated games?

Habu Kazumasa: Cyber Sleuth was a title that was developed with player in mind. In order to reboot the Digimon Story series, I shaped a plan with the developer on the assumption that we never go off the basic concept of the Digimon Story series. That is why we kept the simple playstyle of a turn-based RPG with leveling, which allows everyone to play without reading instructions.

In addition to that, we did everything to guarantee the same amount of Digimon to train as the first Digimon Story game released on Nintendo DS, so that the gameplay was focused on collecting and training various Digimon. It was very tough recreating what used to be in pixels & sprites and transform them into 3D, but it came true thanks to all of the staff at Media Vision, the developer.

Also, we received regarding the DS version of Digimon Story where players could not see their own Digimon during battle even though players want to see the Digimon they trained actively battle. In response to the , we focused on creating attractive renderings of Digimon during a simple turn-based battle; which became possible with 3D. We had done this once for the PSP Digimon Adventure, and I thought we could leverage the know-how to create and render Digimon in Cyber Sleuth.

Also, I think the reason why renderings such as special skills and victory motions are highly ired is because of a development staff member, who is a huge Digimon fan, that put a lot of effort into studying minor Digimon and reproducing them.

The story itself is structured based on the settings created for the LCD games: Digital Monster to Digimon Adventure. We composed a storyline which questioned how people build a relationship with Digimon. They were once seen as AI programs in Cyberspace or life forms from another world who started invading the real world as a threat. I think one of the charms of Digimon is to portray a story of how values would change though encounters of humans and unseen life forms; on the premise that essentially Digimon do not exist in the human world. I would like to keep this theme as one of the main subjects for future titles.

As for Hacker’s Memory, my inspiration is the quartet of minor characters called Van Gang from Durarara!!!, illustrated by Suzuhito Yasuda sensei, who was in charge of character design for Hacker’s Memory. I wanted to express that even minor characters who are not highlighted in a world-saving story have their own stories in the same world.

Were you surprised by the warm reception to both Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth games outside of Japan?

Kazumasa: When Cyber Sleuth was under development, overseas distributors were not as open to the localization of Digimon. They said the target demographic skewed towards children and the Digimon anime wasn’t popular. Despite such doubts, Cyber Sleuth was finally localized (it had been a while since the last Digimon game) thanks to a petition that thousands of fans ed.

When it was launched, I wasn’t sure how many players would play the game because it’s been some time since there was a localized Digimon game. Therefore, I was very surprised by the large number of players who purchased and played this title.

We can keep creating Digimon games because of the fans around the world.

The game will continue to express the amazing world of Digimon, and the continuous of fans will be greatly appreciated.

Do you see the Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth storyline continuing in any form in a new installment?

Kazumasa: The story of Cyber Sleuth ends at Hacker’s Memory.

As for the Digimon Story series, we are planning to continue new development, so please look forward to that.

The world described in the game, however, is connected as a multiverse, so the characters who appeared in Cyber Sleuth, and characters I have created, might appear in another game as guest characters.

mastemon digimon story cyber sleuth interview

Mastemon was the new character created for Cyber Sleuth. What were the goals with this Digimon’s design?

Kazumasa: One of the main concepts behind creating the original Digimon; Mastemon for Cyber Sleuth was to use the DNA Digivolution that combines various attributes and characteristics from LadyDevimon and Angewomon. Mastemon was created in this universe, being able to utilize a tremendous force that consists of two opposing attributes from both angels and demons, suring even the dimensional walls.

Originally, Mastemon was planned to be introduced as Mirei Mikagura’s partner in Digimon World Re:Digitalize for the PSP. Unfortunately, due to various issues we couldn’t make this idea come true.

In order to add a deeper meaning to opposing attributes together, I requested that the design of the original Digimon follow a two-tone black & white color scheme, much like what you see in the Lucemon Chaos Mode.

The first concept art that the designers came up with was very well done, having Mastemon equipped with various large armaments such as cannons. However, I personally did not want the overall design to take on a bulky appearance or focus on a power-up art direction. So, I requested the redesign of Mastemon to strip most of all the large armaments, and instead focus on using the Digimon’s body as a weapon.

digimon story cyber sleuth interview 1

People heading to the North American PlayStation Store in search of a digital copy of the Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth may find themselves disappointed. It appears the game has been delisted from the store. If someone searches for "Digimon Story" on the storefront, all that comes up are the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita versions of Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth Hacker’s Memory. The apparent delisting was first discovered by people on the PlayStation Vita subreddit.

So far, it seems this delisting is limited to North America. The European PlayStation Store has listings for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita versions of Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth. If you head to the Asian PlayStation Store, you can also still find the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita versions too.

The downside is, the physical copy of the PlayStation Vita version of Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth is not available in North America. Only the PlayStation 4 version received a retail release. However, the physical PlayStation Vita copies released in Asia do have an English language option and the PlayStation Vita is a region-free system.

DIgimon Story: Cyber Sleuth is available on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita worldwide.

Digimon, medals, money, and more all carry over when someone goes through Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth a second or third time.

The post Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth’s New Game Plus Lets You Keep All Of Your Digimon appeared first on Siliconera.

<![CDATA[

Like many JRPGs, Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth doesn’t have to end once you beat the game. Someone could go on to complete a few post-game challenges or head into a new game plus save while. Which someone chooses is up to them, what you’ll get to do is largely the same either way.

There are still things to do, but when is up to the player. In the post-game, there will be Royal Knights quests waiting for a player, as well as the Master and Legendary Cups in the Nakano Broadway’s Coliseum. The battles experienced in both require the strongest Digimon you could possibly train, and you’ll want to either do these after beating Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth or after beginning a new game plus file. Bandai Namco also has DLC missions for the game, which provide ample reason for coming back.

People who do decide to go through everything again, rather than leaving things be and returning to that completed save for other excursions, will find everything waiting in a new game plus save file. All of your Digimon remain, as well as any non-key items, your money, your total accrued memory. your sleuth rank, scan percentages, and all of your Digifarm progress. If you completed the Royal Knights quests prior to starting over, you keep that information for easy digivolving too.

The only things that don’t carry over again are related to the story. You can’t skip anything. The event segments proceed as normal, you need to get locations, hacking skills, and key words as usual, and you’ll re-discover mirror dungeons. This also means you’ll get memory upgrades for story events again. It’s also a means of going over memory limits. In a new game plus file, it’s possible to go over the 255 memory mark.

Really, it feels like the point of Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth’s new game plus is to help people who enjoy collecting every trophy or might have missed something through normal play. Collecting every medal can be difficult in one run, since you might miss some of them as you play. These carry over to a new game, so you’ll still have all the ones you missed. It’s also a great way to get the farm fully upgraded, in case you don’t have all the islands or items.

People who wanted to go through Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth feeling like some sort of god will get that chance with the new game plus. You can completely own the game, if you go through again after mastering everything. There isn’t any new content to pull someone in otherwise, so whether you go back and do it all again or maintain a mastered post-game save is up to you.

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth is immediately available for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita.

To do well in the Digimon competitive scene, you'll have to be prepared to level grind, devolve to increase ABI, plot out evolutionary paths, and spend lots of time training.

The post Preparing For Multiplayer Matches In Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth appeared first on Siliconera.

]]>
<![CDATA[

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth offers online multiplayer matches, for those daring enough to attempt a random assault against another player. Even better, it doesn’t take long to find an opponent. However, that doesn’t mean you’re in for an easy experience. There are people out there who are putting tons of time and effort into training their Digimon, and they’re merciless.

This is especially if you’re pitted against someone from Japan, as they’ve had the game since March 12, 2015. You can’t determine who you face, after an online match is selected, so there’s always the risk of someone incredibly powerful showing up to wallop you. Which is why you need to take every precaution. The only thing that keeps you out of online battles is if your party memory is over 150, after all.

There are basically two keys to success if you want to get competitive, and both of them involve level grinding. You’re going to want Digimon with high ability (ABI) levels, which determine how many bonus stat points they can earn, and you’re going to want them to be Ultimate level or higher.

2016-02-04-143430

Getting to the Ultimate level isn’t too difficult. There are plenty of opportunities to earn experience. You can battle with them, send them to the farm, or use Tactician USB. These are an item that doubles earned experience. You’ll get one of these in Chapter 19, but you can also make them in the Digifarm. You have to set the course of action to development, have a Builder Digimon in the lead, choose the 1,000 cash option, and have purchased Developer Know-How for the farm, but it’ll be worth it. If you have it equipped, it’ll boost experience for every Digimon in your active party after a battle.

It’s getting the additional stats that get to be an issue. While you can eventually buy a bonus stat reducer, which helps you manage any bonuses you may have inadvertently distributed early on, competitive Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth players will want to think about training characters they really like immediately. But before that, let’s talk about ABI.

If a Digimon’s ABI is 100, then you get 100 bonus stats. You want that. Not only will it make you a force in multiplayer, since bonus stats are added on top of the level 50 standardized stats across the board, but high ABIs and ridiculous stats are required to get some of the best characters in the game. While there is a mystery meat item you can use to immediately increase ABI, you only get a set number in-game. After the ending, they’re incredibly expensive. It isn’t cost effective to go that route. While it takes more time, the best thing to do is evolve and devolve a Digimon you’re investing in early on. You’ll probably only focus on two or three specific characters, so it won’t be as grueling as you’d expect.

Once the ABI has reached 100, you have to think about what you want to do with that Digimon. There’s a fantastic flowchart guide on GameFaqs by Draken70 that goes through every character in the game. You can see if who you have will eventually turn into the one you want. After ABI has been maxed, sit down at your computer and track all of the possible evolutions. The path you take will determine the inherited skills a Digimon will take with it to its final evolution. There are specific abilities you’ll want, healing abilities in particular, and this moment is the time to figure out how to get them.

Only after you’ve put this time in should the Digifarm come into play. Once you reach the Champion level for a character, you might have to start training to get stats necessary to reach specific evolution options. If camaraderie isn’t an issue, then you’ll want to go with 30 minute Tough Courses for the best results. Look at your Digimon and what stat you want. You’ll need a Fighter for attack, Defender for defense, Brainy for intelligence, Nimble for speed, Durable for health, and Lively for skill points. While the bonus percentage is negligible for overall influence based on personality, it’s critical for training. Say you want a character to max out intelligence. You’ll want to buy the patch in Eden to change it’s personality to Brainy, set have a Brainy Leader in the Digifarm, put any characters you want to become genius out to pasture, and wait 30 minutes. Keep repeating this, and you’ll be all set.

All of this will take a lot of time. Fortunately, Digimon training is rather captivating. To be honest, the way in which online multiplayer is handled left me a little discouraged and disheartened, so I abandoned the way of the warrior and have been attempting to go for the cutest characters possible. But it might be fun for you! Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth is a delightful game, immediately available for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita, and I absolutely recommend giving the competitive scene a shot.

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth has a lot in common with JRPGs that aren't Pokemon.

When you think of Digimon, what’s the first game to come to mind? Odds are, it’s Pokemon, since both titles consist of collecting and raising monsters you’ll use in a fight. It was inspired by both Pokemon and the Tamagotchi, after all. The latest entry, Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth is a bit different. While the critter catching and care is right there, the game also contains gameplay elements from JRPGs like Persona, .hack, and Final Fantasy II.

The Persona elements hit hardest. There are poppy songs in the soundtrack, sharply dressed high school heroes, TVs and monitors to jump into, relationship building with monsters, mystery cases, people to rescue, and secrets to uncover as an official sleuth. Kyoto Kuremi is as much a mentor to the Digimon Story avatar as Persona 3’s Shuji Ikutsuki. The teenagers involved in the story call to mind SEES’ students, as they’re definitely kids, but possess a somewhat unnatural seriousness and gravity. The ability to talk to people you’ve met, by sending brief messages, or answer quizzes from Digimon on the farm, is a means of building relationships to open new cases or evolution options. It helps foster a connection and set Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth further apart from Pokemon, by increasing its ties to other successful, stylish JRPGs.

Though, Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth’s mysterious illness that’s leaving people in comas is less like Persona 3’s Apathy Syndrome and more like the .hack series’ Twilight Incident or AIDA Server Incident. In both cases, people are placed into comas with seemingly no means of recovery, with the cause being some anomaly in the virtual systems. Eden is more ordinary than The World, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t taking cues from the previous series. It really feels like a virtual world, just as it did in the .hack games.

Perhaps my favorite part of Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth is the part that borrows from Final Fantasy II. There’s a keyword system. Your avatar will learn various phrases as part of an examination. Like Final Fantasy II, using these in conversations with the right folks advances the story. Granted, it could be a little less obvious; People with something to say about that topic have a lock over their head in a dialogue bubble. Still, it’s a means of making it feel like you really are connecting with people in this virtual world.

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth seems like one of those games people could misjudge, all because of the Digimon name. Yes, it is all about capturing and raising Digimon. Sure, that part of the game is really engaging. But, this is also a very strong and capable JRPG that takes some ideas and elements from other games. Everything is pulled together in a manner that works well, and investigating more detailed sidequests is as entertaining as raising the best monsters.

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth is immediately available for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita.

It's easy to get a crew filled with the strongest and coolest Digimon in Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth.

It’s been a long time since we’ve had a proper Digimon game. In fact, it’s been so long that you might not know how to start collecting and training Digimon. Don’t be ashamed. It’s quite different than Pokemon and other games. There are many delicate nuances to grasp in Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth.

First, capturing Digimon is nothing like collecting in Pokemon or its clones. You get to choose Hagurumon, Palmon, or Terriermon as your first, so it’s just given to you. All subsequent Digimon are acquired by battling them in the field. With each fight, the data capture on them increases. Once it reaches 100%, you can spawn one in the Digilab. Though, waiting until it’s reached 200% is best, since the Digimon you’ll generate will have better potential. To be more exact, it’s starting ABI and level caps will be higher.

2016-02-03-195445

Second, don’t feel like you have to level grind to get doubles of every Digimon or boost your own characters’ levels. In fact, I’d advise against level grinding of any kind before Chapter 2. Here’s why. Characters level up incredibly quickly in Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth, due to creatures who aren’t in your active party still gaining experience, the Digifarm offering tons of experience, and characters having minimal digivolving requirements. You’ll hit those level 5, 10, 15, and higher level caps without even thinking about it when dilly dallying. Since memory limits how many Digimon you can have with you at a time, and you don’t start getting memory boosters until Chapter 2 and its boss fights, you’ll be severely limited if you grind.

On the plus side, it isn’t like you really have to collect every Digimon you meet in the field. While characters in the Digimon anime series have set evolution patterns, that isn’t the case in Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth. There will be at least three evolutionary paths for each Digimon’s current state of being. You can de-digivolve at any time, as long as you know the prior evolution, and you can digivolve as long as you meet level, stat, and held item requirements.

Though, when it comes to digivolving or de-digivolving, it’s best to go for those level caps. ABI ends up being a pretty major requirement when it comes to evolution. Other stats can be influenced by training at the Digifarm, but it can only be increased by maxing out level caps, devolving, evolving, and combining the character with other Digimon to make sure it’s at its best.

Not that you really need to worry about maxing things out. From what I’ve seen, it’s possible to have all of the characters from the original Digimon anime series before the second chapter without much trouble. Maxing stats is really only a necessity if you plan to participate in competitive play.

digimon

Which means you’ll need to spend some time at the Digifarm. You can have up to 10 Digimon on the farm, with one set as a leader. Training regimens can be set to increase stats, at the cost of camaraderie, characters can be fed to make them like you more or increase stats, and it’s possible to give them assignments. The key here is to observe the Digimon’s personalities. You want to set a Leader character with a disposition that matches the activity at hand. Any Investigation assignments should have a Searcher character as the leader, to shorten the time. Development of items needs a Builder. The other character types are all linked to stats like health, skill points, attack, intelligence, defense, and speed; those characters should be Leaders while training. Items can be purchased to change personality types, so don’t worry when a character you like doesn’t have the attitude you need.

The only really annoying thing about the Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth evolution process is the need to be in the Digilab. You can’t handle evolutions in the field. You have to find a phone to head to the lab and address all needs there. Which can be rather frustrating when you find out multiple characters on the farm have reached level caps. Phones are everywhere in the real world, thankfully, and most of the dungeons are small enough where backtracking to one isn’t a big deal.
