A compilation of both Deathsmiles I and II for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One has been confirmed. A new teaser video showing off gameplay has been ed by the publisher, City Connection. Deathsmiles I and II are side-scrolling shoot 'em up games, notable for their gothic lolita characters, horror aesthetic, and peculiar CG enemy designs.

Developed by Cave, veterans of the "bullet hell" genre, Deathsmiles I and II released in arcades back in 2007 and 2009 respectively. Both games were later ported to the Xbox 360; the first game even saw ports to iOS, Android, and Microsoft Windows. However, the compilation will mark the series' first release in over 5 years. The compilation was mentioned during a TGS 2019 stream, but this is the first we've heard of it since last year.

A teaser video for the Deathsmiles I and II Switch, PS4, and Xbox One ports was released at TGS 2020, showing off the hectic gameplay and visual style.

City Connection has published several titles for the Switch, PS4, and PC in recent years. The company's past efforts include Soldam: Drop, Connect, Erase; some shoot'em up games from Psikyo; and Penguin Wars. The publisher has prepared an official website for the compilation, though it is a preliminary one at the moment.

Deathsmiles I and II are scheduled to release in Japan in 2021 for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One.

cave shmups ios revival

There’s good news for people who enjoy the mobile versions of Cave shmups. The company is going to make its classic Apple iOS apps compatible with modern devices again. It has opened a Cave Sh∞ting World website and confirmed 64-bit updates for four games.

Previously, Cave’s Deathsmiles, DoDonPachi Blissful Death, DoDonPachi Maximum, and DoDonPachi Resurrection HD were all only playable on 32-bit devices, which meant people who updated to iOS 11 lost access to the shooters. However, free updates will be arriving for all four games. A sale will be held on each of them soon to celebrate this development. (Also, as a reminder, all four games have “lite” trial versions.)

Deathsmiles, DoDonPachi Blissful Death, DoDonPachi Maximum, and DoDonPachi Resurrection HD will all be playable on 64-bit Apple iOS devices again after the free update. In addition, on September 15, 2019, Cave will appear on the Dengeki x Famitsu TGS 2019 fourth day broadcast between 14:00-14:45 JST for what is being called a “major announcement” on Twitter.

Back in November 2015, Cave annd Degica brought Mushihimesama to Windows PCs via Steam. Now, the next shoot’em up from the catalog to be cleared for launch is Deathsmiles. In Spring 2016, the gothic-themed side-scroller will come to Steam.

Deathsmiles has quite a history in North America. It’s actually the first Cave shooter to make it to a console here, coming to the Xbox 360 in 2010 thanks to Aksys. It was later ported to Apple iOS devices in 2011 and released on Android devices in 2013.

In Deathsmiles, players control Gilverado’s Angels. They’re a group of young women spirited away from our world. They’re trained in the ways of magic by Count Dior and then defend their new homeland. Windia, Casper, Follett, Rosa, and Sakura, along with their familiars, use their elemental magic to defeat any threats.

Cave and Degica have yet to announce any additional or special features for the Windows PC version of Deathsmiles. For example, it is unknown if Smartphone Mode, where Tiara is a playable character, will be available. However, the Steam release of Mushihimesamaincluded Steam Achievements, Cloud, and Leaderboard .

On August 6th, Cave will release a sizeable update to Deathsmiles on iPhone, which will bring new items, music and costumes to the game. As far as costumes go, the update will allow you to unlock additional costumes for Tiara after fulfilling certain conditions in the game. Some of these outfits, they say, might be recognizable from somewhere.

New music will come in the form of a new background music track that Cave say will also sound familiar to players. In order to unlock the track, you’ll have to perform some kind of special track. The only hint they provide is rather vague: “Flash flash? Tap tap!”

Once you’ve got the update, you’ll also be able to collect puzzle pieces while playing the game. These pieces can be assembled into an original illustration by Deathsmiles’ iPhone Mode illustrator, Yukinatsu Mori. The most significant addition is that of new items, however. Cave are bringing over items from Guwange and Dodonpachi Resurrection as DLC items. Another item will increase the in-game item drop-rate.

Finally, the August 6th update will also add a screen rotation (flipping) feature, and an option to switch the screen to the left or right. They’ll be holding a livestream at this link on August 5th at 11:00 AM (GMT), showing off some of these features and providing further hints on how to unlock the new background music track.

Cave’s iPhone and iPod Touch release of Deathsmiles is right around the corner -- it’s coming next week on July 7th. Cave are launching the game at a special commemorative price for its four four days on iTunes, so if you want to grab it cheap, you can pick it up early.

In the U.S., the launch price will be $4.99. In the U.K., you can grab it for £2.99, and the rest of Europe will have to shell out €3.99. If you pick it up after July 10th, you’ll have to pay regular price, which is $7.99.

When Cave announced Deathsmiles for the iPhone, they revealed  new iPhone Mode, which stars a new character with an original story and music. You can watch videos and look up screenshots of that in this older post.

Next up for the iPhone from Cave is Deathsmiles. Cave didn’t just port the game over, though -- in addition to Arcade Mode, they gave it a new mode with a new character, too, called the “iPhone Mode”. iPhone Mode is aimed at both those who are new to the game, as well as those who have seen everything the console version of Deathsmiles has to offer.

iPhone Mode stars a character named Tiara, princess of Gilverado. Cave say she dotes on her subjects and friends, but is ice-cold to those that threaten her kingdom. In iPhone Mode, she takes on an evil witch  coven.

You can power Princess Tiara up with items either dropped by enemies or bought at Sakura’s Shop within the game.

iPhone Mode’s scenario and character designs are handled by manga-ka Yukinatsu Mori. Mori based his style for the game on original character designs by Deathsmiles series illustrator, Junya Inoue. The mode will have brand new music composed by Takeshi Miyamoto (Muchi Muchi Pork, Pink Sweets).

Practice mode is in Deathsmiles for iPhone as well. Cave haven’t provided a release date for the game yet, but say they’ll announce one soon. In the mean time, you can watch a promo video for the game above.

Ever wonder how much Cave shooters sell during their lifespans? We have a figure for at least one. MCV report that Deathsmiles is approaching 100,000 sales between the U.S. and Japanese versions of the game.

In Japan, Deathsmiles sold 19,635 copies in its first week on the market in 2009. While that number may seem low, keep in mind that Deathsmiles only came to the Xbox 360 two years after its release in Japanese arcades, so Cave also made money off the game’s arcade release.

By the end of 2009, the game had sold around 30,000 copies in Japan according to sales tracker Media-Create’s records (although, that number is likely outdated by this point).

Rising Star Games released Deathsmiles in the UK last week. Additionally, Cave announced this past weekend that the game is now also headed to the iPhone and iPod Touch this spring.

A big thanks to Cave Nut for the tip!
