It is difficult to believe that Dead Rising is 18 years old at this point. It's not just because the recent Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster makes the game look gorgeous, all while retaining the style and aesthetic of the original. For an 18-year-old game, the gameplay loop and various zombie-killing and photography mechanics feel as fresh now as they did back on the Xbox 360.

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster opens up with photojournalist Frank West traveling by helicopter to the quaint town of Willamette, Colorado. He intends to cover breaking news of the rumored riots occurring at the town. Upon his arrival, Frank witnesses some strange violent scenes, but encounters no riots. He discovers that the reason behind no information coming out of the town is a military quarantine put in place by the US National Guard. After making a deal with his pilot, Frank descends on the helipad of the Willamette Parkview Mall, with only 72 hours to find out the truth and be the first to get his hands on the scoop. It doesn’t take long until a horde of zombies breaks into the shopping mall, attacking anyone and everyone in sight. With both his life and the truth on the line, Frank takes it upon himself to help anyone he can, maybe take advantage of the situation, and snap a few photos that might look nice on his Pulitzer-winning story.

Initially, Frank doesn’t come off as a nice person. He starts as a self-interested and aloof man that’s only in Willamette to further his career at the expense of other people’s suffering. It is only through witnessing the horrors brought upon by the zombies and the people behind the outbreak that he steps into an active role helping the survivors of the shopping mall, and even makes friends with the DHS agents working the case. Even though some of the psychopath boss characters might come off as goofy or comedic, most of them are treated with a degree of understanding and are rarely used as the butt of the joke.

It is usually in the aftermath of the fights that Frank gets to see how the sustained trauma and stress of the zombie outbreak has affected these people, disrupting their lives in drastic ways and making them hold onto extreme and distorted versions of reality in order to cope with the circumstances. While Dead Rising is a comedy horror game, the game takes the subject matter and its characters seriously. The first game in the series is particularly poignant in the way it lays out a critique of rampant capitalist consumerism and its relationship with military imperialism, particularly regarding to America.

The gameplay is where most of the comedy shines through. During the course of the 3-day story mode, Frank needs to balance rescuing survivors, fighting zombies, taking photos, and completing each main case. Doing so will provide with Prestige Points (PP) that increase his overall level and unlock different stat upgrades and skills. The level up rewards are somewhat randomized, with some being available at the lower level pools and some available on higher levels. Escorting survivors has been noticeably improved from the original game, with the companion AI being much better at evading zombies and following Frank. There’s still some level of friction when helping friendly NPCs, but it’s part of what makes playing Dead Rising thrilling. The survivor escort quests in general have received an overhaul, with characters having favorite items and becoming more responsive and better at following Frank if you give them the weapons or food they enjoy. NPCs can also offer hints, point to hidden PP photo ops, and even tell where secret weapon stashes are.

There are countless ways to kill zombies in Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. From a variety of more traditional melee weaponry and guns to sports equipment, home appliances, and even benches and anything in the environment that Frank can interact with. Combat is as simple as picking up a weapon and whacking a zombie until it stops moving, which can take from a single hit to a few depending on the effectiveness of your tool. One of the most notable quality of life changes in the remaster is the inclusion of an updated control scheme. While the original 2006 game is great, it doesn’t control as smooth as some might . The modern controls make Dead Rising feel amazing. Special moves are mapped to the right bumper and a face button press, and the zombie grab reaction is assigned to the face buttons.

However, killing zombies isn’t all there is to life. As a journalist, Frank also needs to stay on top of his game and take photos of anything and everything that might offer some value in his story. This means striking images of drama, brutality, horror, or comedic outtakes. It’s important to note that the erotica genre is missing from the Deluxe Remaster. However, this isn’t a massive loss and it doesn’t meaningfully change the way the photo mechanics works. New to this remaster are also the different camera upgrades are available throughout the mall. Some include a flash option as well as depth of field settings, and they are a neat addition.

Another new addition to Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster is an expanded dub. Now Frank and every NPC speaks during gameplay and side missions. Although this comes with a downside. The original English voice cast has been replaced by a new one. Terence J. Rotolo doesn’t return as Frank’s voice actor. I generally liked Jas Patrick as Frank, even though some of Frank’s most iconic lines sound a bit off coming from someone different. The iconic licensed music tracks return to DRDR with an option for streamer mode that disables them to avoid copyright issues.

On a final note, RE Engine makes Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster look beautiful. The lighting in particular has seen a massive upgrade compared to the original game, which looked flatter in comparison. It is clear by looking at both games side by side that there has been a massive upgrade. However, the new remaster left me convinced that the this is how the original game looked liked back in 2006. The new character models are fantastic, and while Frank doesn’t look exactly the same and his new design ages him a bit, I think he looks the part. In fact, I’d say that he looks exactly how his original promotional design depicts him.

Dead Rising was great in 2006 and it continues to be great as Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. The tension of going through the main story cases, escorting survivors to safety, and trying to complete all side objectives all while managing your in-game countdown is as exhilarating as it was 18 years ago. Perhaps the most impressive thing this new remaster achieves is making me believe that this is how the original 2006 game played. The QoL additions are a game changer and I can’t imagine going back to the original control scheme. Unfortunately, some characters in the new English dub don’t sound as good as the original cast. On the brighter side, that is probably the only sore point I can find in the remaster.

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster will release on September 19, 2024 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC via Steam.

Dead Rising Promotional Song

Capcom released a special promotional song ahead of the release of Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. The song, titled “Doesn’t Matter ‘Cause”, is sung from the perspective of a zombie coming to the realization that they are dead.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzbFxPGD3GY

The promotional song is a mellow acoustic guitar driven song where a zombie sings about the melancholy of being a shambling corpse in the world of Dead Rising. As the song progresses, the singer laments the many ways that Frank West can take out him and his fellow zombies. In the process, we get to see footage of various weapons available within the remaster. These include the mundane, such as being shot, to the more experimental weapons that Frank can use, such as soccer balls or parasols. These clips from the games are mixed with original animation showing the zombies dancing.

The promotional song is clearly meant to evoke the more ridiculous elements of Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. As well as the version found on Capcom’s US YouTube channel, a Japanese version was also released. The songwriter and musicians involved have not been revealed by Capcom at present, nor have the animators.

The promotional song is similar to a series of videos Capcom released to promote the release of the Resident Evil 4 Remake in 2023. Similarly, they featured original animation and a comical tone. However, these were a series of short skits rather than a song.

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster will be released for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC on September 19, 2024.

Dead Rising Mega Man Outfit

Capcom has released a trailer showing off the Mega Man costume in Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. The outfit will be available as part of the Digital Deluxe pre-order edition.

The Mega Man outfit is a costume available for Frank West to wear as he battle zombies in the Willamette Parkview Mall in the Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. Despite being labeled as Mega Man, the outfit is more directly based on MegaMan.EXE from the Mega Man Battle Network series. The outfit will come with a music track, “Running Through the Cyber World” taken from the original Battle Network game.

The Mega Man costume is part of a selection of outfits available with the Digital Deluxe Edition. Many of these outfits are based on other Capcom games, including Leon Kennedy from Resident Evil 2, Ken from the Street Fighter series and Tron Bonne from Mega Man Legends. Each character will come with a music track that will play over the mall sound system while wearing it. While these outfits are part of the Digital Deluxe Edition, they will also be available separately as DLC.

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster will release on September 19, 2024 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. Physical editions of the console versions will release on November 8, 2024.

Though I love for Capcom’s Resident Evil series, I never took the plunge into its other zombie-filled franchise: Dead Rising. With the arrival of Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, I trekked into the Willamette Parkview Mall for a peek into this intriguing zombie adventure. I walked away a fan of what I experienced.

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster involves a The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask-like 72-hour timer. Journalist Frank West arrives in this small Colorado town amidst a secret zombie outbreak. Your job is to investigate the several cases and figure out the truth behind the event, while protecting and saving survivors, before the three days are up.

For the purposes of this preview, I only had the chance to check out the first of the three days. This included an introduction to Frank, the other characters who find themselves in the mall, and a couple of boss battles. You can pretty much use your time however you like when it comes to engaging in its activities, finding collectibles, and completing side quests.

I enjoyed the freeform nature of this game, especially when it came to the semi-open world location of the Parkview Mall. I felt like, even in my short time spent with it, that it could be one of the most compelling and memorable locales in gaming. Every inch of the mall is fully realized and feels smartly connected to one another. This includes the various stores, the ridiculous food court, and the gorgeous park in the middle of the complex.

The mall may not be huge, but it has an intricate and thoughtful design that helps it to stand out. There is also something beautifully simplistic about the gameplay and progression of Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, from what I saw. In general, you can pick up various items you find, such as a propane tank or lead pipe, and use it to fight with a single button. You can throw some items, but there isn’t too much to combat outside of dodging, throwing, and attacking.

Image via Capcom

I appreciate this clarity, especially when it comes to the sheer swarms of zombies in the mall. Hacking and slashing through them felt fresh early on, especially due to the relative breezy difficulty of this game in the early hours. You can level up as you take photos, save survivors, and complete cases, to build up Frank as a fighter. Zombies went down in one or two hits during my initial voyage into the mall, and I found it rather easy to run away from them as well.

In this way, Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster may offer the right balance of feeling fun to explore and like the challenge doesn't gets in the way of the experience. The new control scheme, which allows the player to more fully move around, use the camera, and attack all at the same time, added to the newly modern feel.

It also seemed obvious right away that the graphical overhaul makes the game look better than the original. The added textures, hair details, and lighting changes seem evident, both in the mall environments and the characters. Though I could start to see some of the age in cutscene closeups with NPCs, in Frank's first hours I noticed a solid level of polish that never made me feel like I was playing an experience from several console generations ago. The smooth performance, even playing on Steam Deck, helped in this regard. It felt surprisingly modern to me.

Even as someone who never played the original, I enjoyed my first few hours with Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. The sometimes goofy nature of the story, characters, and costumes makes for a refreshing zombie romp. It is actually a shame I only got to experience Frank's first hours in the mall, and I look forward to solving the mystery of this zombie outbreak in the full release.

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster releases for PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC on September 19, 2024.

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster Physical Copies Hit Retail in November

Capcom confirmed that Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster physical copies will appear in retail stores after the digital release. While people will be able to it starting on September 19, 2024, it will be in stores on November 8, 2024.

The physical copies will only be available for the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions, as expected. Capcom also didn’t note if there will be any special editions or extra features with this release.

However, Capcom did share other news about what to expect from the release on social media. A pair of DLC trailers appeared. The first one focused on the Resident Evil 2 crossover in Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. You can dress Frank as Leon S. Kennedy. The footage showed the Digital Deluxe bonus in-action.

The other DLC trailer highlighted the Dead Rising 2 costume for Frank in Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. He can look like Chuck Greene if you pre-order the digital copy of the game. Again, the video focused on actual gameplay alongside images.

dead rising digital deluxe announcement trailer

During the Capcom Next Summer 2024 showcase on July 1, 2024, there was a trailer for the Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, which showed some information on DLC and, more crucially, its release date. Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster will come out on September 19, 2024 and pre-orders are now open.

You can watch the trailer here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIAiUWhxmrs

The trailer starts with a history of Dead Rising’s releases before showing the classic Frank West zombie-killing action. It also shows the differences in model between the original game and the remaster. Characters look slightly different and there are improved graphics. For example, you can see the curls and details in the infamous granny’s poodle. In the original game, the dog just had lumps of fluff around its body.

During the stream, there was more information from the development team. Ryosuke Murai, the director, states that it’s a remaster. But considering how much work they put into it, it’s really more of a remake. The game will be able to run at 4K/60fps and there will be QoL updates such as the ability to move while aiming. You’ll also be able to auto-save. The NPC AI is better than before and the UI is more intuitive. Finally, the game has been dubbed in 9 different languages and will be available in 14.

As for DLC, the Digital Deluxe version of the game will come with a pack that contains 17 costumes for Frank and 17 BGM tracks you can play in the mall. This will be available when the game comes out. Some of the costumes look quite bizarre, such as what looks like a robot and a bunny suit.

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster will come out on the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC via Steam on September 19, 2024. This is the digital version.

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster will be featured in Capcom Next - Summer 2024

Capcom has revealed that it will broadcast a new video program to showcase three of its games, including the recently revealed Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. The Capcom Next - Summer 2024 broadcast will appear simultaneously worldwide on July 1-2, 2024, depending on the time zones.

The company had just published a teaser trailer for Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster the day before on June 26, 2024. Capcom did not mention any platforms in the trailer, but it promised to unveil more details in the broadcast.

The Japanese-themed action-strategy game Kunitsu-Gami and the iOS and Mac ports of Resident Evil 7 will complete the program's lineup. As a side note, the Japanese version of the 25-minute-long stream will feature narration by the voice actor Takehito Koyasu.

Here are the full list of games that will appear in Capcom Next - Summer 2024:

  • Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess - Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, PC
  • Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster - No platforms announced as of yet
  • Resident Evil 7: biohazard - iOS, Mac

Capcom will only showcase the above three titles in this program. The company put up a fine print that specifically states there will be no new information on Monster Hunter Wilds, as that title is arguably the one many players are anticipating the most in this period.

The Capcom Next - Summer 2024 program will be broadcast simultaneously worldwide on Monday, July 1, 2024, at 3 PM PDT / 6 PM EDT / 11 PM BST. People living in Asia Pacific can catch the show in the morning on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster Brings Frank West Back

Capcom announced it is bringing back Dead Rising again, this time with Frank West returning in Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster. It is expected to release in 2024, though platforms aren’t confirmed yet.

For those unfamiliar with the beat’em up game, Dead Rising involves journalist Frank West heading to a Colorado mall to find out why the military locked everything down. He quickly finds out it’s because of a zombie outbreak. He needs to survive while finding out what’s going on and potentially saving survivors. Depending on your actions, there are multiple endings to earn.

Here’s the first trailer Capcom shared. It sets the stage by showing Frank in the helicopter approaching the mall, then being dropped in to carry out his investigation over the course of three days.

The original Dead Rising appeared multiple times following its August 2006 debut on the Xbox 360. A Wii version appeared three years later. Then in 2016, remasters showed up again for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster is in development and will launch in 2024. There are no product pages or websites live for it just yet, however the official social media for the series is now active and open again.
