touhou project colorful stage

The Japanese version of Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage (Project Sekai) has get an collaboration event involving Touhou Project. The event will take place from early May 2024.

It was announced at 1:34:34 of the Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage anniversary stream for its 3.5 years of service. There will be three tracks from Touhou Project, with beatMARIO arranging them, that’ll appear in Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage. They are “Last Brutal Sister Flandre S,” “Bad Apple,” and “Help me, ERINNNNNN!!.” Next month’s stream will reveal which unit will sing “Bad Apple.”

https://www.youtube.com/live/8eLX2GS1INY?si=ngP1cMOkbFw5WryI&t=5676

During the stream, there were a few jokes as to whether or not kids these days are able to keep up with the Touhou Project information. This is likely due to the height of Touhou Project’s popularity being over a decade ago. In saying that, though, some younger netizens did not even know of Vocaloids until Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage. So even though there are still new Touhou Project games and such coming out, younger fans might not know of its history.

Touhou Project is a bullet hell shoot ‘em up game that ZUN first released in 1997. Its popularity likely stems not only from the games themselves, but also because of its cast of cute girls. As for Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage, it is a rhythm game in which human characters can access a world called SEKAI, which projects their true feelings and allows them to meet virtual Vocaloid singers.

Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage is readily available on mobile devices, and the Touhou Project collaboration event will take place in early May 2024.

Hatsune Miku Colorful Stage Characters are Quite Complex

This might come as a surprise to people, but in a game called Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage, the Crypton Vocaloids aren't really the main characters. They are there, sure. Miku is an important part of all the storylines as a central character, yes. However, they aren't the stars. Instead, the focus is on groups of talented young people. Each one of them possesses some musical talent. They're on the verge of a breakthrough (or breakdown). And rather than just make sure they look and sound good, there's genuine thought put into making them identifiable, heartfelt, and even realistic.

Mizuki and Ena

There are five groups in Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage, each with its own sort of theme. For example, Leo/need is the group of childhood friends getting the band (and their friendship) back together. More More Jump! is composes of idols (and prospective idols) at varying stages in their careers. Nightcord at 25:00 is a group of strangers with unique traumas coming together to create music anonymously. So individually, you have different genres and themes connected to the overarching stories. Wonderlands x Showtime is a group of eclectic individuals trying to make a theme park’s stage show popular again. You know to expect silliness. Nightcord at 25:00 is a darker and more dramatic tale with mature themes. Its are in the Empty Sekai attempting to keep one of their own from doing something drastic. The five base tales cover different bases.

Hatsune Miku Colorful Stage Characters are Quite Complex

But what makes them stronger is that each one isn't limited to the genres and themes you'd expect from them. You'd expect More More Jump's tale to be about the prospective singers coming together. They find what they need to become stars is perhaps each other. And sure, there's some of that as Airi, Haruka, Minori, and Shizuku practice together and interact with one another. But it's also a realistic look at what people might go through if they pursue a professional career in music. Airi ended up finding success in the idol industry, but found herself typecast as "comedy relief." Minori's failed dozens of auditions. So in addition to them discovering and rediscovering what they love about performing, we see how difficult the work is. Leo/need is touching. We see friends reuniting. They discover they still cared and needed each other all along. But we're also seeing how bullying can affect people's lives.

Hatsune Miku Colorful Stage Characters are Quite Complex

Also, the Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage characters are each well developed. While certain people might come across initially as "more important" in some storylines, the others matter just as much. Nightcord at 25:00 is especially good at this. K and Yuki are the focal points. K's father is hospitalized. She blames herself for his illness. She's desperate to save people, since she couldn't save him. We see her isolation and savior complex. Yuki's so depressed and pressured that she's completely emotionless and empty. However, both Amia and Enanan are dealing with their own traumas. Each of them isn't attending school normally, like K, for their own reasons. While the group (and players) might be "there" for Yuki, these four are genuinely lifelines for each other. We get to see that play out as they connect here and in their first event story.

Saki

Not to mention how important the Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage events are for developing characters. The global version's been going through some of them rather quickly, perhaps in an attempt to catch up to the Japanese version. They offer supplemental development for specific characters. Each one provides even more insight into what they're doing and how they're growing after the main stories. In First Star After the Rain, we explore how Saki feels after finally being discharged from the hospital. We get to understand her priorities. We also see how someone who once thought she was going to die is dealing with it. While the Nightcord at 25:00 tale hints at Yuki's trauma, Imprisoned Marionette shows part of what she's dealing with after an excursion in the real world with her collaborators triggers her.

Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage Characters are Quite Complex

The result is that Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage is a game where characters are constantly growing. We're learning about them with each main campaign chapter and event. And, due to the way it works, nobody is locked out of event stories after they're over. All of them are unlocked to view, even if you didn't earn them. Which means every player is able to follow along with the developments and see the different layers to each one's personalities.

Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage is available on Android and Apple iOS devices worldwide. In Japan, it is known as Project Sekai: Colorful Stage.

Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage Game Makes it Easy to Enjoy Miku Songs

Mobile rhythm games can be intimidating. Is there going to be a stamina system holding you back? Will getting songs cost you real money? What about getting good “singers” for your group? With Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage, there’s a delicate balance between ensuring it is easy and fun to play songs while dealing with predictable mobile game elements like a gacha. Fortunately, while your score might suffer if you aren’t going all-in on the character banners, it’s easy to play as much as you like and earn tracks.

Like many Hatsune Miku rhythm games, Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage involves tapping in time with new and old tracks. There are the standard single tap notes, ones where you tap two at the same time, and others where you place a finger and “hold” the note until the end. Each of these could also involve a “flick,” where you swipe your finger up at the end. The game is good at reading inputs. As long as you’re tapping correctly in the region region at the bottom of the note track, you’ll be fine. It is also forgiving about retrying. Some of the songs you’ll play are Cover Tracks. Those involve the “groups” in the game performing with the Vocaloids. Others are new songs prepared for the game. You get a selection to start. More can be purchased for 10 Music Cards each. (Cards are doled out fairly regularly for participating in events and by playing.) As part of the launch celebration, Sega and Colorful Palette committed to adding 39 tracks.

Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage Game Makes it Easy to Enjoy Miku Songs

The thing that makes Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage great is that there’s no stamina system locking you out of playing songs. Yes, there is an energy element. You can choose to use up to 10 at a time to boost earned experience. Which in turn can help you accrue more event points per performance. But if you want to play for fun, you don’t have to have them. You can play any song you want, at any difficulty, without needing to take breaks or pay to “recharge.” It’s refreshing and encouraged me to spend more time with the game.

What I also appreciated is that Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage doesn’t shy away from challenging players with its songs. The game offers five difficulty levels for each track you acquire. Easy, Normal, Hard, and Expert versions all appear once a song is in your library. You need to prove yourself to unlock the fifth level, which is Master. (That involves getting through it on Expert with fewer than seven “Good” notes.) The difficulties feel reasonable. Especially since the inputs aren’t demanding and this Hatsune Miku game does let you determine things like note speed to find your comfort zone.

Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage Game Makes it Easy to Enjoy Miku Songs

The only downside is that the gacha influences the sorts of scores you can get. As usual, performing a track can result in grades that start at “C” and top out at “S.” The thing is that certain elements determine if you get that coveted “S.” Skill plays a part. But so does having three and four-star cards, investing in Area Items in locations to boost characters’ Talent, and equipping cards with Note Boost skills that turn “Goods” and “Bads” notes into “Perfects.” Now, this honestly isn’t a huge deal. You can still enjoy the game and play all the songs without getting those coveted high scores. It’s perfectly enjoyable. Just there is a wall that can block you out of “A” and “S” scores unless you really invest. Which, in turn, might bother people used to hitting those heights in other Hatsune Miku rhythm games.

But if you’re just there to play some fun Hatsune Miku and Vocaloid songs, Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage is a great time. Yes, it might be frustrating to not get the “S” you deserve from a full combo. But it offers so many songs. Earning more feels manageable. Not to mention if you’re okay with “knowing” you probably earned an “S,” even if it doesn’t show it, it’s a lot of fun.

Interview: Going Over the Hatsune Miku Colorful Stage English Release

It took some time, but Project Sekai Colorful Stage! feat. Hatsune Miku is getting an English release as Hatsune Miku Colorful Stage. To help prepare, Siliconera spoke with Producer Tomokazu Ichikawa about the game. It turns out localization began once the Japanese version launched and, while it will be about a year behind, all updates are on the way.

Jenni Lada, Siliconera: When did localization work on Hatsune Miku Colorful Stage begin?

Tomokazu Ichikawa: As soon as we launched the Japanese version, we started assembling a team for global version, right around January 2021.

How much will be localized? For example will there be English subtitles for the Hatsune Miku Colorful Stage songs?

Ichikawa: We kept the original voice lines and song lyrics to preserve the unaltered atmosphere. The songs do not have subtitles but everything else from the story, interface, and other texts are translated into English.

Interview: Going Over the Hatsune Miku Colorful Stage English Release

Given how established the Vocaloids are in games, such as the Project Diva series, how difficult was it finding or maintaining personalities when localizing Hatsune Miku Colorful Stage?

Ichikawa: We utilized our experience with Diva series and constructed unique world for this game with many new characters, taking place in our real-life world.

There have been quite a few updates released for Project Sekai Colorful Stage feat. Hatsune Miku in Japan. How much of that content will be in Hatsune Miku Colorful Stage when the English version launches?

Ichikawa: Not all post-launch updates for Japanese version will be available for global version at launch. However, we will add every content update made to Japanese version to global version as well down the line. Also, we are preparing some timed-exclusive contents for global version as well.

In of events and updates, how big do you expect the gap to be between the Japanese and English versions of Hatsune Miku Colorful Stage?

Ichikawa: At the time of the launch, the global version will a little over an year behind in of the events and updates compared to the Japanese version. It would be difficult to catch up as we intend to run every event we ran for Japanese version, but we aim to catch up as soon as possible in of features and songs.

Interview: Going Over the Hatsune Miku Colorful Stage English Release

Have there been any unexpected challenges when preparing Hatsune Miku Colorful Stage for an English release?

Ichikawa: It was the first time for us to set up the team for release of mobile game in the west, so we were not certain how to form a line of communication between US and Japanese teams. We were unable to meet face to face due to COVID situation, but, ironically, it also helped us tremendously in of remote communication.

Will there be any global-exclusive events or songs in Hatsune Miku Colorful Stage?

Ichikawa: We are not at liberty to reveal anything concrete at the moment, but we aim to answer your request, building the game with you, the community.

Hatsune Miku Colorful Stage will come to Android and Apple iOS devices on December 7, 2021. It is immediately available in Japan as Project Sekai Colorful Stage! feat. Hatsune Miku.

Project Sekai

Earlier this week, Sega and Craft Egg subsidiary Colorful Palette announced that the Crypton Vocaloids-themed smartphone rhythm game Project Sekai feat. Hatsune Miku will launch on September 30, 2020. The game entered pre-registration and got beta tests earlier this year.

The premise of Project Sekai is that there is a world separate from ours where music is formed from the thoughts of humans in our world. Hatsune Miku and the other Vocaloids are inhabitants of this world, and when several groups of humans accidentally find themselves in the other world, they collaborate with the Vocaloids to create new music that will help them achieve their dreams. The game will feature both famous songs and brand-new songs to jam to, and the game also features new arrangements of existing songs that include both human and Vocaloid singers. Here's one of the new songs, “Wah Wah World” by Giga and Mitchie M, below:

You can find the game's pre-registration page here, and the game's iOS and Android pages here. Like many other smartphone games, a pre-registration campaign is going on for the game. Notably, 390k pre-registrations will net all players special outfits for the Vocaloids, and 600k pre-registrations will net every player a guaranteed 3-star or above character.

Finally, check out a few more in-game music videos that have been shared by Sega and Colorful Palette for Project Sekai over the past month:

“Fragile”

“Charles”

“needLe (New song by DECO*27)”

“Kuyamu to Kaite Mirai” (New song by Mafumafu)

Project Sekai feat. Hatsune Miku will launch on September 30, 2020 for iOS and Android in Japan. You can read about the five human groups in our previous posts here and here.
