Square Enix hasn’t confirmed any new take on the SNES game yet. [Thanks, AnimeClickIt and Gematsu!] (Editor’s Note: Updated at 9:40pm ET on May 2, 2025.)

Allegedly, Yuji Horii brought up a potential and possible Chrono Trigger remake as an aside during the , which was intended to focus on the Dragon Quest series. However, updated footage showed it wasn’t what it seemed.

Here’s the embedded video from AnimeClickIT the moment at the event:

The original version of Chrono Trigger appeared on the SNES, and Yuji Horii was one of the writers who helped create it. It later appeared on the PlayStation and DS worldwide as well, with the DS version including new content. Mobile ports launched in 2011, and a PC one debuted in 2018.

While it hasn’t appeared in quite some time, we did see its follow-up not long ago. Square Enix released Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Editionon the Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC in 2022. That included the first English release of Radical Dreamers.

The Steam Spring Sale can often be overwhelming, with thousands of titles slashed in price, it can be hard to figure out which games are a good deal. There is also the problem of choice, and gamers don’t want to spend their hard earned cash on a game they don’t like. If you’re an RPG fan, then we’ve rounded up ten of the best RPGs in the Steam Spring Sale that are worth both your time and money.

Here are our recommendations for the best value RPGs in the Steam Spring Sale.

Chrono Trigger 2i592n

Chrono Trigger is one of the best games of all time, and while the Steam version isn’t the best, this Steam Spring Sale discount is still a bargain. One of the most iconic turn-based RPGs, Chrono Trigger is about exploring time periods, and getting dragged into a quest far bigger than yourself. With seven recruitable characters, and 12 different endings, Chrono Trigger set up many features that great RPGs use to this day.

Chrono Trigger is available for $3.74 until the end of the Steam Spring Sale.

Yakuza 0 142m2b

Screenshot from Yakuza 0. Akira Nishikiyama and Kazuma Kiryu stand with their backs to the camera. They have no shirts on and their yakuza tattoos are just black outlines.

All of the Yakuza games are available during the Steam Spring Sale, but we recommend Yakuza 0 as a starting point if you haven’t played anything from the series. Yakuza 0 is not only chronologically the first game in the series, telling the back story to two of the series’ main characters Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima, but it’s also one of the best. This action RPG series is one that every RPG fan should try.

Yakuza 0 costs just $10.99 during the Steam Spring Sale.

Persona 4 Golden 375965

Like the Yakuza series, the modern Persona series including recent releases like Persona 3 Reload and Metaphor: ReFantazio, are all available during the Steam Spring Sale, but we’re recommending Persona 4 Golden. It’s one of the lesser played games in the series as it was a PlayStation Vita exclusive for almost a decade, and as all Persona games are standalone stories, it’s a great place to dive in. This turn-based RPG asks you to strengthen your friendships to unlock your true power.

Persona 4 Golden can be bought for just $11.99 during the Steam Spring Sale.

Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 Remix 2p16s

This one is more expensive than most games on this list, but it also includes four Kingdom Hearts games and two movies. Another classic RPG series, Kingdom Hearts blends Final Fantasy and Disney characters in an action RPG with a completely unique battle system. The Remix collection includes the first two mainline games as well as Birth By Sleep, Re:chain of Memories, and a cutscene collection from 358/2, and Re:coded. It’s a great starting point in the series.

Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 Remix costs $29.99 until the end of the Steam Spring Sale.

Final Fantasy VII 171d2g

When it comes to classic RPGs there isn’t anything more iconic than Final Fantasy VII. You can also purchase the remakes during the Steam Spring Sale, but the original game is available at an incredible price. Take on the epic adventure, which sees Cloud and his clan travel across the continent, visiting different towns and cultures, and discovering who the true enemy is along the way, with a deep turn-based battle system.

The original Final Fantasy VII is just $4.79 during the Steam Spring Sale.

Nier: Automata 27205w

If you like RPGs that challenge your preconceptions, and break the fourth wall with unexpected twists, then action RPG Nier: Automata is for you. Not only does it look gorgeous even with its fast-paced combat system, but it combines this with its well-built world, and engaging storyline. With multiple endings that require multiple playthroughs to see them all, Nier: Automata asks you to question what you believe about the genre.

Nier: Automata costs just $15.99 during the Steam Spring Sale.

Live A Live 4v294

A gorgeous 2DHD remake of a classic turn-based RPG, Live A Live tells eight separate stories across different time periods, protagonists, and gaming genres, before they all align for one final adventure. Live A Live is a fighting game, a tower defense game, a stealth game, and a visual novel as well as an RPG, and it blends everything together beautifully and seamlessly. A must-play older game that everyone should experience.

Live A Live is available for $19.99 until the end of the Steam Spring Sale.

Lies of P 2y1y3z

A more modern game than most on this list – hence the price – we’ve added Lies of P as our soulslike of choice as it’s a great entry point for this subsection of the RPG genre. Far more story heavy than other soulslike games, Lies of P tells a steampunk Pinocchio story with challenging combat, and choices that have major outcomes on the story.

Lies of P is on sale for $35.99 during the Steam Spring Sale.

Trails of Cold Steel 17145

Starting in 1989, there are few series that are as long-lasting as The Legend of Heroes, and almost all of these games are on offer as part of the Steam Spring Sale. Trails of Cold Steel is one of the best games to jump into as it includes a four game story arc with a satisfying start and end. Once you get into the turn-based RPG series there are so many other games to explore that your wallet might just regret grabbing this first game.

Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel currently costs $19.99 during the Steam Spring Sale.

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch 283m6h

One of the most popular RPGs from the PS3 era, Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch combines whimsical storytelling, and the gorgeous art style of Studio Ghibli. Evocative voice acting brings the whole world to life as you feel as if you are living in a Ghibli movie while playing this turn-based RPG. This is the perfect game if you’re looking for somewhere whimsical to get lost in and escape.

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch costs $7.49 during the Steam Spring Sale.

The Steam Spring Sale is on now, and ends on March 20.

New Chrono Trigger Anniversary Projects Planned

Square Enix announced that the company is planning various projects to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Chrono Trigger. The company did not offer any further details on what these projects will entail.

The announcement post mentioned that the anniversary celebration projects will appear over the next year. Furthermore, the company specified that these projects will be outside of the realm of video game, so we shouldn’t see any major video game announcements for the anniversary celebration.

More information about the Chrono Trigger anniversary projects will appear in the game’s official social media s, as well as the official Square Enix social media. As a side note, the official Square Enix misspelled the Chrono Trigger release year as 1985, with the game’s official correcting this mistake in its own announcement post.

March 11, 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of the release of Chrono Trigger in Japan. It is a game created as a collaboration between Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii, Dragon Ball manga author Akira Toriyama, and Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi. It first debuted on the Super Nintendo worldwide, before eventually being ported to other platforms.

Chrono Trigger is readily available on PC via Steam, Android, and iOS devices. The game originally released on March 11, 1995 for Super Famicom, and it also received PlayStation and Nintendo DS re-releases.

Chrono Cross Director Explained Its Parallel Worlds Happened to ‘Create Something New’

Among the many topics that came up in Square Enix's hour-long interview with Chrono Cross Director Masato Kato was how the game featured parallel worlds, compared to Chrono Trigger's time travel. When discussing its development, he noted that he was "approached to create something new" and decided to do "something different this time." He then also explained about how the conceptualization stage is one of his favorite parts, though it can mean more frustration later on when trying to actually bring said concepts to life.

Here’s exactly what Kato had to say about the concept of Chrono Cross’ parallel worlds and how they came about to contrast with Chrono Trigger’s time travel.

I was approached to create something new. Chrono Trigger was based on time travel. So when I thought about doing something different this time, I decided to make a game using parallel worlds.

Basically, I hate repeating something I’ve done before. I like trying my hand at something new, something I’ve never attempted before.

In that sense, if I had to play a game or make a game, I wanted to see what I could construct with parallel worlds. I thought about what I wanted to do next. And it made clear sense to me to go with parallel worlds.

Kato also talked about the parts of game design and development he enjoyed most when discussing Chrono Trigger’s time travel and Chrono Cross’s parallel worlds. That also led to his joking about the frustrations that can also come up as a result.

The preparation stage before making the game is the most fun. “We could do this!” “I’d like to try that!” Daydreaming and coming up with ideas are the most enjoyable part. You don’t think about the hard work at that stage. You just impulsively and continuously expand your ideas. Like, “We could do this! Or, “This would be awesome!”

Then actually having to transfer that into data drives you to tears. “Whose idea was this?” “I wish I’d never suggested this!” “Stupid me!” Every single time I drive myself to despair having to actually make it.

There was a huge volume of character speech. There are two worlds, so two versions of each NPC each leading a different life. That’s what we had to create. I didn’t realize that when we were brainstorming. But I wound up driving myself to tears as I typed in all the text.

Or, “This would be awesome!” Then actually having to transfer that into data drives you to tears.
In the same interview, Kato also discussed how the game had 40 playable characters because he added "whatever [he] wanted on a whim." Chrono Trigger update PC mobile Android iOS 21:9 ultrawide screen 1.5 speed auto-battle more save slots new areas

Square Enix announced a new update for the PC and mobile versions of Chrono Trigger. Most notably, this update will add an option for 21:9 ultrawide aspect ratio. It will also expand the total number of save slots to 20, improve general operability, and provide a 1.5x auto-battle speed boost. The update will arrive on March 11, 2022. [Thanks, Gematsu.]

This marks the first time Chrono Trigger PC version got an update since August 2018. The mobile versions have only seen minor bug fixes since then. Square Enix even released a new trailer in Japan to show off the 21:9 ultrawide aspect ratio and other features. It goes over each addition in turn, with a note at the bottom showing the new element being shown off.

Chrono Trigger originally launched for the SNES in 1995 as a critically acclaimed RPG. PlayStation, Nintendo DS, PC, and mobile ports later appeared. It is not currently available on modern consoles, despite fan demand. However, a new Chrono Trigger jazz album released back in January 2022. Plus, Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition, a remastered version of its sequel, will launch for consoles and PCs in April.

The new Chrono Trigger update will arrive on March 11, 2022 on PCs, Android, and iOS devices. It is available on all three platforms worldwide.

Siliconera reported earlier that Square Enix's free Tomb Raider offer to encourage people to stay home has been expanded to a full on marketing and charity campaign, giving gamers, healthcare workers, and organizations dealing with COVID-19 things like games and financial . Some of that content has been released, the marquee offering being a bundle of discounted JRPGs like Chrono Trigger via Steam.

The Stay Home and Play JRPG Collection bundle includes four JRPG games for an asking price of $49.84 That's 72% off the total retail asking price for Chrono TriggerDragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive AgeOninaki, and Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age. If you have one or more of these, you can snag them individually as well. 100% of Square Enix's proceeds (meaning the company's cut after Steam's take) are going to charitable organizations, such as food banks.

In addition to being able to gift games to your friends via TikTok, Square Enix has also made Deus Ex GO available for free on both the App Store and Google Play marketplace. This one will be free until May 7, 2020. Also, if you're stuck at home and looking for something fun to do that isn't playing more video games, but you still want to live that video games life, here's a cute Square Enix coloring page for the occasions:

2019-06-28_074210 Chrono Cross is getting its own Original Soundtrack Revival Disc this August following Chrono Trigger’s that releases next month. Square Enix shared some samples in a new trailer for the OST Revival Disc featuring music by Yasunori Mitsuda.   Similar to the other Revival Discs, the Chrono Cross OST Revival invites fans to relive memories through in-game scene videos along with music from the game, all on a Blu-ray disc. This album in particular has music that Yasunori Mitsuda re-recorded from the PlayStation and mastered from scratch, so the sound is much better than the original soundtrack version.   002 It also includes the MP3 files of the music tracks so you can listen to it on other devices, and a full-colored booklet with notes from Yasunori Mitsuda for you to check out. It has 67 tracks and is going for 5,000 yen plus tax in Japan. It is currently available for pre-order in North America for $49.99 at the Square Enix Store.   Chrono Cross Original Soundtrack Revival Disc releases on August 7, 2019.   Chrono Cross first released for the PlayStation in Japan in November 1999. The game has since then been re-released for the PlayStation Network as a PSONe Classic title for PS3, PS Vita, and PSP.

2019-04-24_004025 As Japan makes way to transition into the new Reiwa period, Famitsu recently held a poll for its readers to vote for their favorite games that released in the Heisei period (Jan 8, 1989 – May 1, 2019), and this week’s issue of the magazine has revealed the full top-20 list. [Thanks, Ryokutya2089.]   Below are the top-20 titles that were voted in by 7,158 Famitsu readers:

  • 1. Chrono Trigger
  • 2. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • 3. NieR: Automata
  • 4. Final Fantasy VII
  • 5. Okami
  • 6. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
  • 7. Final Fantasy X
  • 8. Pokémon Red/Green/Blue/Yellow
  • 9. Dragon Quest V
  • 10. Xenogears
  • 11. Vainglory
  • 12. Suikoden II
  • 13. Mother 2 (Earthbound)
  • 14. Splatoon 2
  • 15. Tactics Ogre
  • 16. Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G (Monster Hunter Freedom Unite)
  • 17. Kingdom Hearts
  • 17. (tie) Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
  • 19. Final Fantasy XV
  • 20. Final Fantasy XI
  • 20. (tie) Pokémon Diamond & Pearl

z_5cb98e8ec248e   While we don’t have the number of votes for the full list, it is mentioned that Chrono Trigger’s #1 place happened thanks to the overwhelming from fans in their 30s. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild placed #2 in overall votes, but was actually the top-voted title for readers in their 40s. Meanwhile, NieR: Automata mostly got its votes from readers in their teens and 20s, and was actually #1 most voted title for those age groups.   It’s also worth noting that Vainglory by Super Evil Megacorp snuck its way onto the list as the only Western-developed game, which is a bit of a head-scratcher looking at its company but let’s not forget that it’s mostly a list made to have fun with the Famitsu readers, so it shouldn’t be taken too seriously.   You can check our previous report for more details on the top-3 titles with some comments from fans.
