On April 25, 2024, Bethesda Game Studios will release a free Fallout 4 update for the Xbox Series X, PS5, and Windows PC. You can read what the updates will have via the official website.

The Xbox Series X and PS5 updates will focus on improving stability, as well as implementing fixes. It will also include native applications and performance updates, allowing you to play it with up to 60 FPS and new resolutions. This update was supposed to come out in December 2023. However, Bethesda needed to delay it, as the developers needed more time to work on it.

The PC version of the update will also have fixes, such as to the Creation Kit and some quests. It’ll also introduce widescreen and ultra-widescreen . Those who played in Chinese and Japanese were unable to to Bethesda’s website, thus locking them out of some mods.

While Fallout 4 was originally only on Steam, the Microsoft Store, and GOG, it will become available for purchase on the Epic Games Store along with this update. You’ll also be able to play it on the Steam Deck. Aside from fixes, the update will introduce new Creation Club items such as Enclave skins, as well as a Makeshift Weapon pack and a Halloween Workshop.

Fallout 4 is readily available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC. The free Fallout 4 update will only be for the Xbox Series X, PS5, and Windows PC though.

siliconera xbox game of the year 2023

The Xbox Series X and S has increasingly been less of a platform for buying games and more of one for Game subscriptions. It’s no surprise, then, that all three of our Xbox Game of the Year 2023 selections appear on the service. Check out our picks below, and keep checking back this week for more awards!

These awards represent the consensus of the Siliconera staff. For more of the year’s award selections, check out our Game of the Year 2023 archive.

Hi-Fi Rush 5p6v5r

We say games “came out of nowhere” a lot, but rarely do games go from unannounced to out in one fell swoop, and even more rarely are they this polished and stylish. Tango Gameworks’ Hi-Fi Rush brings rhythm into its action, with frantic musical gameplay and bright environments that echo a bit of that old Jet Set Radio feel. But it’s very much its own thing! And we didn’t forget about it, even after many packed months. If you missed it, maybe give it a look.

Starfield 567156

While Hi-Fi Rush was a shadowdrop, Starfield is definitely the opposite: rumbling to life slowly at Bethesda over decades and officially announced nearly a decade ago. It’s enormous, full of systems and conversations and worlds to explore. And after a few decades of Fallout and Elder Scrolls games? Yeah, we’re psyched to see a different sort of environment for Bethesda’s signature brand of storytelling.

Siliconera Xbox Game of the Year Winner: Sea of Stars r5p58

There have been many games in recent years that play off the nostalgia of the Chrono Trigger era, but few have managed to recapture that magic. Sea of Stars goes past the wink-wink-nudge-nudge referential approach, and delivers a world of characters that is worthy of its own generation of future nostalgia plays. The semi-active combat and interesting puzzles keep players engaged, and the execution of its pixel art style is exactly what you’d want. That makes it our Xbox Game of the Year 2023.

Starfield The Settled Systems animated trailers characters

Bethesda Softworks released three new animated trailers for the studio’s sci-fi RPG Starfield. The new series of Starfield videos is titled The Settled Systems, and it follows several characters from different worlds and their motivations to explore the stars. The trailers include no voiceover, instead only featuring music and sound effects.

“Supra Et Ultra” is the first of the new batch of Starfield animated trailers. Starfield Details

A massive Starfield appeared at the end of the Xbox Games Showcase 2023. In an hour-long presentation, Bethesda Studios offered insight into the different gameplay systems within the highly anticipated RPG. In addition, Microsoft revealed a new story trailer for Starfield within the Xbox Games Showcase itself.

Since Starfield is based heavily around space exploration, there's a huge emphasis on different planets and ships. Ships can be used not only to travel to different planets, but can also be used in dogfights and to board other ships, for piracy or more legal purposes. Planets will be split between procedurally generated wild planets and custom populated planets. There will be a vast cast of characters across multiple factions, including space cowboys, and the settlement of New Atlantis which is home to a group called Constellation. Bethesda claimed that New Atlantis is the biggest city they've ever built.

Customisation will be a huge part of Starfield. Bethesda showed off that ships can be customised, outposts can be built on wild planets and weapons can be modded to suit your playstyle. As with other Bethesda games, there will also be character creation, with 40 presets available that can then be adjusted as you see fit. Combat will also play a huge part, and gravity will affect your abilities during fights. A new skill system will be based around skill points to unlock abilities, and special challenges to rank these abilities up. Naturally, these challenges will increase in difficulty as you progress up the ranks.

The full presentation can be viewed here.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMOPoAq5vIA

Bethesda will also be releasing a special smart watch releasing as part of the Starfield Constellation Edition. It connects with your phone and comes in a special display case based on the cases used by the Apollo space missions. There will also be a Premuim Edition featuring early access to the first story expansion, Shattered Space, and a digital soundtrack and art book.

In addition, Microsoft released a special limited edition controller and headset to tie in with Starfield. These are available today.

Starfield will release on September 6, 2023 for the PC and Xbox Series X.

Redfall Review

A small, provincial city is plagued with vampires and cultists, with all escape barred off by some strange supernatural force that overcame this previously quaint place. A ragtag group of heroes are the only thing standing between this bloodthirsty threat and the end of humanity as we know it. If it sounds like a mid-1980s B horror flick, that's because this is what Redfall is, and it doesn't pretend to be anything different. Bold in its approach that feels strangely steeped in nostalgia, it retreads old ground, but often stumbles over poorly implemented game mechanics that leave this game feeling unfinished and under realized. And while Redfall was delayed to its 2023 launch, it feels like this game could have spent more time in the oven.

Editor's Note: The reviewer played through Redfall with the day one patch, which affected the overall review and score. 6b3s53

The narrative beats of Redfall are relatively interesting, though it is not entirely unique or novel in its execution. Vampires and cultists took over the town of Redfall, with the appearance of these bloodsucking monstrosities appearing after a medical experiment gone awry has transformed the town and its denizens for the worse. The premise is barebones enough to allow for some interesting environmental storytelling, with certain items and notes placed deliberately around the map to inform you about how things got to where they are now and what the people that lived in the town were like before everything went to hell in a handbasket. The town itself feels lived in, and the presence of the cultists turned your average run-of-the-mill suburban homes into haunts full of vampires and televisions broadcasting messages from a mysterious figure known as the "Hollow Man." Sound design helps create a deeply unsettling atmosphere in some of these homes, with static noise and sometimes ominous chanting from the Hollow Man filling numerous rooms in houses, basements, and even local mom and pop shops.

[caption id="attachment_961745" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Redfall Review Screenshot via Siliconera[/caption]

While the environments feel lived in and the town itself feels well constructed, it's littered with only a handful of enemy types. Cultists are your standard human enemies that carry weapons you cannot pick up, because you can only find them as loot in boxes, drops from vampires, or obtain them as purchasable items from an in-game weapon's merchant. The AI is laughable, even with the day one patch, and they sometimes spin around in circles or endlessly climb cliffs in an attempt to get to you, making them easy targets. Vampires have a little more variety, but most will teleport to you and slap at you with their claws. Some will siphon blood from you, which is can be annoying at higher difficulties if you don't have high level guns, or throw orbs of dark energy your way. You will need to stakes to kill them, which feel like they should come in limited supply, but are plentiful enough to eliminate vampires as any real threat. This makes encountering them just as boring as running into cultists.

Since Redfall functions on the looter shooter method of obtaining weapons, you'll be scavenging for guns with random ives and levels to continue to deal significant damage to your enemies. There isn't a huge drop off in of damage at higher difficulties, but you can feel it later on. The single-player mode was easy enough for me to tear through, but when I began adding other players into the mix, that's when the game began to unravel at the seams. It took several attempts to get one friend into a lobby, with them needing to be re-invited several times as their game would keep crashing. Eventually they did make it in, but as all four of us began to progress the game we started encountering a lot of visual bugs and technical issues. This included frozen character animations, replicated player character models, and even one player appearing to phase through the ground from my perspective. Certain menus would also bug out, and I ended up getting stuck on the map screen because someone had continued a quest while I was in a menu, with me being unable to actually quit the game manually. Progress in multiplayer is also tracked based on the host, and progress is not shared between those in the lobby. This means you would need to play the game four times in order to complete the campaign for everyone.

[caption id="attachment_961744" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Redfall Review Screenshot via Siliconera[/caption]

Each player character possesses their own unique skills, which you think would improve your general multiplayer experience. But some characters are more useful than others. I played Jacob for most for my time in Redfall, and he ultimately felt the most useful. Him being in proximity to other player characters would increase their headshot damage, and his ultimate ability is a sniper rifle that automatically tracks enemies. Devinder's ultimate ability is also extremely useful for making quick work of groups of vampires, but the characters that suffer from a lack of more utility focused offensive abilities are Remi and Layla. They feel like true s. Which you think would make them the most valuable assets to the group, but Layla's umbrella ability blocks any outgoing and incoming damage, including your own bullets. This makes her skill feel arguably less useful when you can just run away from enemies that are shooting at you, or snipe them from a distance. Remi can heal, but it's locked to her ability, which takes longer to charge than using a med pack and those are plentiful around the map. It feels like there wasn't a clear balance between characters, which makes it feel like Redfall's gameplay only favors two out of its four leads.

Redfall is a culmination of things. It's a multiplayer shooter, an homage to folk horror and various vampire myths, and a looter shooter all in one package. However, it does none of these things particularly well, and feels thin as a result. It's an amalgamation of ideas that could work in concept if given more time, even though I'm personally adverse to my experience being dictated by gun levels and arbitrary ives slapped onto my firearm of choice. RPG level up mechanics and skill trees feel sufficient enough to incentivize players to grind. It's a game that's fun with friends, but that in and of itself is a low bar to cross. Anything can be fun with friends under the right circumstance, and solo-play is a mostly mindless affair. Those looking for a meatier experience and something more in line with what Arcane has released in the past will be sorely disappointed. And as Redfall lacks any actual depth in of narrative or gameplay loop, it's a hard game to recommend. But who knows, maybe six months to a year down the line, it could be a completely different and more engaging game. That's just the time we live in.

Redfall is available for Xbox Series X and PC.

PC Specs 1tf39

  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080

  • AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12-Core Processor

Ghostwire Tokyo Obon

August 1st is a special day in Japan. The Bon festival (also called "Obon") is when Japanese families celebrate their ancestors. Those ancestors are said to return in spirit form to the world temporarily. Bethesda and Tango Gameworks commemorated the occasion with the Ghostwire: Tokyo Obon update. A free update to the game dated August 1, 2022, the Obon update adds a new cosmetic costume for players to wear in-game, as well as a new emote.

In its blog post on the topic, Tango Gameworks drew parallels between Ghostwire: Tokyo and Obon. Just as the game deals heavily with spirits and their impact on the living world, Obon is a time to and celebrate the impact of one's ancestors on the world. The game includes areas and scenes inspired by the Obon festival, including iconic traditions such as the Bon Odori dance. The practice of Toro-nagashi, where lit lanterns are floated down a river to mourn departed souls, is also seen. The Bon Odori itself is available within Ghostwire: Tokyo already as the "Tokyo Bon dance" emote.

The Ghostwire: Tokyo Obon update adds the Jinbei costume, which is a casual kimono-style jacket and shorts outfit. Jinbei are often worn by Japanese men in the summer. The update also adds the "Japanese Sparklers" emote, which causes Akito to crouch down and ire a sparkler's glow. The update also throws in some bug fixes, adjusting things like gliding behavior, meot volume, and some progression issues.

The Ghostwire: Tokyo Obon update goes live on August 3, 2022. The game is available on PC and PS5. Check out Siliconera's review.

Starfield

Starfield may not be coming out in 2022, but Bethesda and Microsoft had more to share about the new original open-world game at the 2022 Xbox Showcase event. Bethesda head Todd Howard appeared to present more details on the long-in-development RPG, as well as reveal the first actual gameplay footage.

Howard showed off footage from early gameplay in the Starfield campaign, when players arrive on a mysterious moon. They disembark from their ship, alongside a human-sized robot companion. The player explores the area in both first- and third-person perspectives, and encounters a facility in use by the "Crimson Fleet Pirates." Armed with a gun, they storm the compound, killing the pirates and taking their loot. During the firefight, another spaceship arrives, which the player jumps to using a jetpack.

The Starfield gameplay footage then skips to a more peaceful section, after the player visits the Constellation faction at their capital on New Atlantis. They speak with a new character in the telltale zoomed-in conversational view used by Bethesda's RPGs, and are assigned a mission to determine the purpose of some mysterious artifacts. The Starfield trailer moved into a gameplay montage, featuring conversations and factions from the game.

Check out the full trailer below.

Players will be able to create their character, and can determine their skills and traits. The skill system combines elements from other Bethesda RPGs like Fallout 3 & 4 and The Elder Scrolls. They'll be able to craft weapons, build out a home base in Starfield homesteading gameplay, hire NPCs, and eventually construct and customize their own personal spaceship. These ships can be flown directly as well, with an in-cockpit view reminiscent of space sims. There is also space combat, with the player-flown ship taking on some pirates.

Howard closed out the Starfield gameplay presentation with a boast about the scale of the game. It'll have over 1,000 planets across hundreds of star systems. Planets that can be landed on, like New Atlantis, can be explored in full, with players able to fly and land anywhere on the surface. He didn't elaborate on whether the planets are bespoke creations or procedurally generated like No Man's Sky.

Starfield is in development and scheduled for release in 2023 for Xbox Series consoles and PC. It will arrive on Xbox Game upon release.

The teams at Arkane Austin (Redfall) and Bethesda Game Studios (Starfield) have incredible ambitions for their games, and we want to ensure that you receive the best, most polished versions of them.

We want to thank everyone for their excitement for Redfall and Starfield. That energy is a huge part of what inspires all of us every day and drives our own excitement for what we are creating.

We can’t wait to share our first deep dive into the gameplay for both Redfall and Starfield soon.

Thank you for your .

As the statement says, actual gameplay footage hasn’t appeared for either Redfall or Starfield yet. Teasers and screenshots have appeared.

Starfield was announced back in June 2018. Details are still vague, but it is set in a new area of colonized space in 2330. People create a character who explores space following a war. Redfall first showed up at E3 2021. It will be a cooperative FPS in which people try to survive against both human and supernatural enemies. There are four possible characters to use, each with their own skills.

Redfall and Starfield will come to the Xbox Series X and PC in 2023.

starfield release date

Ahead of Microsoft and Bethesda's E3 2021 presentation, new details for Starfield, the next major role-playing game from Bethesda Game Studios, leaked. As mentioned by The Washington Post, the Starfield release date is November 11, 2022. The announcement also confirmed it will appear on the Xbox Series X and PC. Once the briefing began, it confirmed it. It also noted it will be a Day One Xbox Game title. [Thanks, Wario64 and Nibel!]

Here is Wario64's tweet showing the date from the teaser.

This is the official teaser.

Unlike Fallout and The Elder Scrolls, Starfield is a new, original creation set in a sci-fi, space-based setting. However, details on the game have been scarce, with only a 2018 teaser trailer shown to date. Besides the official announcement trailer, only comments delivered by Bethesda and Microsoft executives and some leaks of in-development art assets only suggested what the game might be like.

The Starfield release date is November 11, 2022, according to the leaked teaser.
