The Super Robot Wars series inspired a dedicated radio show titled Umasugi Wave, but it will go on a "long" hiatus after March 2025. The show's hosts first broke the news on the 937th episode that aired on February 25, 2025. Bandai Namco later corroborated the reveal by posting an announcement tweet on the series' official social media . It added that the show may air again in the future, and it will make another announcement online when that does happen.

The radio show was originally launched in 2007 with specific coverage for the Super Robot Wars: Original Generations entries. However, it also more recently covered the series' regular crossover entries.

Tomokazu Sugita, Mai Aizawa, and Masaaki Endo are among the radio show's list of featured hosts. The first two voice actors have also been involved in voicing the game series' original characters. Tomokazu Sugita is best known for voicing the KoRyuOh pilot Brooklyn "Bullet" Luckfield in the Original Generation series, while Mai Aizawa had a role as Gunleon's co-pilot Mail Beater in the Super Robot Wars Z sub-series.

The entire host cast for Umasugi also played a role in the original character list for Super Robot Wars 30. Tomokazu Sugita voiced Edge Sainklaus, and Masaaki Endo sang his character's theme songs. Mai Aizawa also participated in the game as the voice actress for Edge's sister Az Sainklaus.

The last episode of the Super Robot Wars OG Umasugi Wave radio show before it goes on a long hiatus will air on March 25, 2025. Prior episodes are also available to watch on Highway Star's official YouTube channel, albeit with limited access timeframes.

Super Robot Wars 30 Expansion

Bandai Namco detailed the next set of content additions for Super Robot Wars 30. The DLC, which consists of free updates and a paid Expansion Pack, was announced via a brief special stream event held on April 12, 2022. These will be the final content updates for SRW 30, and are not included in the Season .

Check out the trailer aired during the event, which details the content, as well as an updated logo that features the mecha added over the course of Super Robot Wars 30 DLC.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Obm_iBylv68

The free update launches on April 20, 2022, and brings new missions that add two new playable units. The mecha are Super Robot Wars original creations Grungust and Van Ein. The Grungust first appeared in SRW IV, though it and pilot Irmgard Kazahara are best known for their role in Super Robot Wars OG. The Van Ein was the main robot for 2015's Super Robot Wars X-Ω, a mobile game that ended service in March 2021. Its pilots Asahi Inui and Schatte Südwesten drive the mecha to safety in SRW 30's roster. The free update also unlocks a set of limited missions previously exclusive to early buyers and pre-order customers. These five missions unlock a total of two units and seven parts. The units are the SRX and Cybaster, while the parts are the Spirit of the Blade, Spirit of the Shot, and Spirit of Power. This content will be available to all players regardless of DLC purchases.

Meanwhile, the paid Super Robot Wars 30 Expansion Pack unlocks in two "sets". The first set unlocks upon purchase, and unlocks three parts and two skill programs. The rest of the expansion deploys on April 20, 2022. The pack adds an extreme "Super Expert Mode Plus" difficulty level. Playing the game on this level unlocks 10 new, "very potent" Power Parts that can be carried over into other modes and playthroughs. A new set of missions is also included, including a story-based Chain Area Mission that delves into the pasts of protagonists Edge and Az Sainklaus. The missions add new attacks for the Huckebein 30 and SRX units.

The expansion pack also adds a total of ten playable units from five series and Super Robot Wars OG:

  • Armored Trooper Votoms - Scopedog, Scopedog TC LRS
  • Dancouga: Super Beast Machine God - Ultimate Dancouga
  • Majestic Prince: Genetic Awakening - Red 5+
  • Getter Robo Devolution: The Last 3 Minutes of the Universe - Getter 1 , Getter 2, Getter 3
  • Shinkalion - Shinkalion E5 Hayabusa Mk. II, Shinkalion E5 Mk. II Over Cross ALFA-X
  • Super Robot Wars OG - Dygenguar

Super Robot Wars 30 is available on PC in North America and Europe, and on PC, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch in Japan and Southeast Asia. The Expansion Pack and free update launch on April 20, 2022. Check out Siliconera's playtest of Super Robot Wars 30.

Gundam Code Fairy

When I was done marathoning all three installments of Mobile Suit Gundam Battle Operation: Code Fairy, I felt no particular need to play Mobile Suit Gundam: Battle Operation 2. The game is based on the engine and mechanics of the free-to-play, multiplayer-focused Battle Operation 2. But it's frankly a good sign that Code Fairy didn't serve as my gateway to getting back into GBO2. At least in my case, that lack of desire shows that Code Fairy is a Gundam game that stands alone.

It's best to think of Code Fairy as a way for B.B. Studio to expand the use of its Battle Operation engine beyond its original focus on online multiplayer. In a sense, it's like the "campaign modeBattle Operation never had, although in this case it's sold separately. Indeed, Code Fairy is single-player only, though linking save data from GBO 2 will unlock various goodies in both games (such as Code Fairy Mobile Suits in GBO 2). There's no need to worry about events, daily s, or any of the free-to-play fluff that powers today's live-service titles. All there is is the fifteen missions of the main story campaign (five per part), and the simulator scenarios if you want to practice or grind out some extra rewards.

Being core to the experience, Gundam Code Fairy's narrative is pretty strong. Unlike the single-player modes of most multiplayer-first action games these days, the campaign doesn't feel like an afterthought meant to mollify people who don't have internet connections. If anything Code Fairy's campaign recalls the older era of Gundam titles, led by the likes of Journey to Jaburo, Lost War Chronicles, and Gundam Side Stories: Missing Link. Like those games, Code Fairy tells yet another unknown tale from the shadows of the One Year War.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VV2_LfDdrP4

By my lights, if there's any one Gundam game that Code Fairy most resembles, it's Mobile Suit Gundam: Zeonic Front. Not only is Code Fairy entirely about characters from the Principality of Zeon, it has a number of minor callbacks to units and events from Zeonic Front itself. The story follows the exploits of Alma Stirner, a Zeon pilot newly assigned to the North American front and "Noisy Fairy", the Zeon military's first all-female mobile suit squad. Alongside fellow squaddies Mia Brinkman and Helena Hegel, Alma takes her marching orders from Noisy Fairy's commander, former ace pilot Killy Garrett. Together they train, grow, and become a fearsome asset to Zeon forces over the course of the One Year War.

Major events from the One Year War form the background and backbone of Code Fairy's story. Though every mission is one that applies to the specific, relatively small theater of Noisy Fairy's operational area, big happenings like Operation Odessa and the death of Garma Zabi help tie the game to the larger Universal Century timeline. If you ever wanted to know how Zeon forces were able to fight for a bit longer after the critical loss of Odessa's mining operations, Code Fairy teaches us that this squad played a part in making that happen.

Gundam Battle Operation 2

Gundam Code Fairy is structured a lot like Sakura Wars, which in turn is structured like an anime series. Each of the 15 missions begins is bookended by an anime-style intro and ending sequence, along with a "next episode" preview. Hand-animated sequences also lend flavor to the storyline in each mission. Even the way the characters are rendered in the in-engine cutscenes has been adjusted to be more "anime-like" in appearance compared to the NPCs in Battle Operation 2. Also like Sakura Wars, the game is quite light-hearted, tonally speaking. Though these girls are most definitely soldiers on the losing side of a war that's killed half of humanity in less than a year, there's still time to throw a Halloween party or agonize over mandatory physical training. Players and Gundam fans looking for a gritty war story may be disappointed that Code Fairy is closer in spirit to something like Valkyria Chronicles than War in the Pocket.

The glut of narrative and character holds up the weaker portion of Gundam Code Fairy, which is the mission design. Though the gameplay of Gundam Battle Operation 2 is fairly solid, that base is built on a foundation that serves uncomplicated multiplayer brawling above all. That means, that despite attempts in each mission to provide varied and interesting objectives, the mechanics don't always work out in a satisfying way.

Code Fairy

For example, in one mission, I was to lure enemy forces into a set of pre-planted traps. However, once the mission kicked off, the enemy forces acted like AI bots in a simulation match, and didn't really behave in a way that fit the "script" of the mission. Nevertheless, the moment-to-moment combat is strong. Each mobile suit has a variety of weapons available, and things like thruster cooldowns, reloading, and various aiming stances give Code Fairy (and by extension GBO 2) a simulation-style edge. It's a slower, more methodical combat flow, compared to the high-speed chaos of the Gundam VS games, or the arcadey action of the Gundam Breaker titles. It can also get surprisingly hard, since your Zeon-model mobile suits are often at a disadvantage fighting beam-equipped Federation forces or even taking on a fully armed Gundam unit.

Mobile Suit Gundam Code Fairy feels like the revival of a beloved era of single-player, narrative-focused Gundam games. If future efforts in this line get the same care and attention, then basing it on a free-to-play multiplayer-led engine like GBO 2's was a move well worth the tradeoffs.

All three parts of Gundam Code Fairy are available on PS4 and PS5.

Code Fairy For example, in one mission, I was to lure enemy forces into a set of pre-planted traps.

Takanobu Terada Left Bandai Namco

Takanobu Terada, the series producer for Super Robot Wars, has left Bandai Namco Entertainment. Terada announced his resignation via the Super Robot Wars live stream held on December 10, 2021. Though he has left the company, Terada will continue to work on Super Robot Wars 30 as a freelance supervisor. [Thanks, 4Gamer]

https://twitter.com/TakanobuTerada/status/1469285705948213257

During the stream, Takanobu Terada revealed that he actually left Bandai Namco Entertainment back in August 2021. He also clarifies that his resignation does not mean he will no longer be part of the Super Robot Wars series. Rather, he will continue to work as a series supervisor in a freelance capacity.

Specifically, Terada states that his work will focus on the "internal" parts of future titles such as graphics and scenario writing. Furthermore, this will also apply to any future Super Robot Wars OG series games. The former series producer has since opened up a new Twitter dedicated to his personal work, unrelated to the Super Robot Wars series.

You can check out the official resignation announcement in the live stream video below (starts at the 42:00 mark).

Terada initially ed Bandai subsidiary Banpresto and helped develop various games in the Super Robot Wars series. A year after ing the company, he produced the 2nd Super Robot Wars G remake for the Game Boy in 1995. Banpresto's game development division later merged with Bandai subsidiary BEC to form B.B. Studio, and Terada became studio head in 2011. Terada stepped down from the position in 2015, however, in order to focus on game development.

Super Robot Wars 30 is immediately available in Europe and North America on PC via Steam. The game is also available on PS4 and Nintendo Switch in Japan and Asia. If you're interested in reading more, you can check out our playtest of the game.

Super Robot Wars 30

One irony of sci-fi stories is that they're often reductive. The expansive universes creators think up have a way of collapsing back down to the actions of individuals. The epic scope of Mobile Suit Gundam's One Year War comes down to a duel between Amuro Ray and Char Aznable. The many world-ending calamities of Neon Genesis Evangelion become backmatter for the toxic relationship between a young man and his father. This isn't a complaint! Rather, it's something inherent to fiction itself. The typically sci-fi subgenre of mecha fiction is no exception. These universes exist to serve their stories, after all, even if that can make them feel smaller. Super Robot Wars 30 manages a rare feat, then. It makes these settings feel bigger than than the stories they served.

That's because being an SRW gameSuper Robot Wars 30 isn't about one universe or one story. It's about every story from every universe. Its purpose is to tie everything together. To become the impossible glue that unites a dozen or more completely unrelated franchises. In doing so, it commits to trying to make them all fit on what a single timeline. You can see it in the game's helpful "Encyclopedia" section. There, Super Robot Wars 30 crams together the plotlines of no less than half-a-dozen mecha series to form the background of "The Last Ten Years."

SRW 30

In B.B. Studio's mashup "New Space Era" timeline, the events of Mobile Suit Gundam, GaoGaiGar, and Mazinger Z were what enabled the events of Code Geass, Zeta Gundam, and Char's Counterattack to happen. Meanwhile, the political shockwaves of Gundam Unicorn cleared the way for the rise of the Zanscare Empire, the antagonists of Victory Gundam. Sure, it's barely coherent and flies apart into nonsense at the slightest scrutiny, but it does the job. For a willing player, that's more than enough to make the Super Robot Wars universe (this version of it, at least) feel like a huge place where anything and everything can happen.

It's into this maelstrom of fan service that Super Robot Wars 30 throws its main cast. These are the former cadets of Military Academy 30, now the command crew of the Dreisstrager, a massive semi-sentient battleship. The ship, as well as the player-selected main character, must save an Earth Federation weakened by years of unending war. That's the consequence of having the events of multiple mecha anime happen simultaneously, of course.

In practice, this plays out in a fairly straightforward manner. Super Robot Wars 30 mimics the branching structure of some earlier titles, and gives players a few options when it comes to deciding where to go next. For example, the very first mission-related choice you make is selecting whether to begin the game on Earth or in space. Either path changes the order in which you encounter (and recruit) the various characters and mecha featured in the game. Selecting Earth links your character up with the classic Super Robots of Mazinger Z, Combattler V, and Brave Police J-Decker, while going to space adds characters from Victory Gundam and Majestic Prince to your initial roster. Similar branches come up in places throughout the campaign, and multiple playthroughs will be needed to explore every ending and completely fill out the playable cast. Each set of missions tends to (very) loosely follow a given piece of source material. For example, missions where you encounter the characters and mecha of Code Geass will center around a scenario shaped like the plot of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;Surrection. Of course, this all comes with the Super Robot Wars twist of having the characters of many other shows able to be participate in the festivities.

Super Robot Wars 30

A large part of Super Robot Wars 30's time is devoted to just letting players marinate in this kind of multiversal interaction. As such, how much enjoyment you derive from that experience can ride on your familiarity with the sources. That's where some stumbling blocks can be found. Super Robot Wars 30 may be so far the only mainline entry to get a western release. Despite that notable achievement, many of its featured series are fairly obscure in the west. Sure, everyone knows the original Mobile Suit Gundam and Zeta Gundam, but Gundam Narrative is much less well-known. And though their presence will likely delight hardcore mecha fans, shows like Heavy Metal L-Gaim, Majestic Prince, J-Decker, and Knight's and Magic are unlikely to get the average anime-watcher's blood pumping.

Thankfully, that helpful encyclopedia and a number of other features in Super Robot Wars 30 make getting acquainted as easy as it can be. At any point during a narrative sequence, players can bring up an encyclopedia entry and profile for the character on-screen, to find out just who they are and where they're from. The in-game codex gives detailed synopses of every featured series, as well as descriptions of every mech. The glossary helpfully defines the many original and concepts unique to each series, and it's all held together by an excellent localization that captures the personalities of each character, making their appeal seem that much less dependent on familiarity. The game even makes it easier on people new to strategy games. The difficulty can be adjusted at almost any time (though it isn't particularly hard on its default settings). Plus, a new "auto mode" lets less tactically-inclined players sit back and let the game do the work, or at least make grinding  levels or cash less tedious.

SuperRobotWars 30

Though its narrative jumble might not be immediately exciting to casual anime fans or mecha newbies, Super Robot Wars 30 is, mechanically speaking, the friendliest entry in the series to date. If you're willing to take the plunge on a bunch of brands and characters you aren't all that familiar with, it's a near-perfect jumping-on point try.

Super Robot Wars 30 is immediately available in North America and Europe on PC via Steam. In Asia and Japan, the game is also available on PS4, and Nintendo Switch. The November 19, 2021 free update added the original character Gilliam Yeager and his Gespenst mecha.

Famitsu and 4Gamer have released their interviews with game developers across the industry regarding their aspirations for 2020, and we've compiled notable bits from them below:

Daisuke Nagata (RS34)

"After releasing Radirgy Swag, we haven't done anything particularly standout, but in 2020 we'll work even more vigorously to provide interesting and fun times... to be specific, a new game, soundtracks, and more, for everyone."

Keito Masubuchi (RS34)

"Our next game is also set to be a shoot 'em up. We hope to provide the shoot 'em up of your dreams."

Norihisa Kochiwa (Idea Factory/Compile Heart)

"Thanks to everyone, the Neptunia series reaches its 10th anniversary in 2020. We're working hard in developing VVVTunia and Game e-Ninja Neptunia, so look forward to it!"

"The Azur Lane: Crosswave DLC will be meaty content that will make fans happy. It won't be just additional character DLC!"

Takuya Aizu (Inti Creates)

"In 2020, on May 8 we'll be entering the celebration period for the 25th anniversary of the founding of Inti Creates. We'll take a brief respite in the first half of the year, and after May 8 we hope to release two -only titles. Also, we'll keep the restart of that particular silly game in mind, and I'll continue to massage the vice president's shoulders so that we can hopefully get the new game in our flagship series going."

Hajime Chikami (Experience)

"In 2020, the extremely late Yomi wo Saku Hana will finally release. We also have a non-dungeon RPG title in development, but we don't have enough manpower... we're recruiting staff!"

Yasuyuki Oda (SNK)

"2020 is the 30th anniversary of Neo Geo! You could say that another big active period is coming to the platform, and I believe game development will be sent into a panic. I hope to organize development structure to flexibly adapt to the changes in development environment."

"Also, it's the 20th anniversary of Garou: Mark of the Wolves, but there is nothing planned in particular..."

Yoshimi Yasuda (Kadokawa Games)

"In 2020, we hope to release a space and mecha-themed title on multiple platforms. Metal Max Xeno Reborn, the new LoveR, and Root Film will also release. Also, we might announce our currently in-development unannounced title on a new platform. It depends on our development progress, so please look forward to it."

Etsunobu Ebisu (Good-Feel)

"Thanks to everyone, this year we were able to release our first self-published title, Monkey Barrels. In the future, we hope to release various games at a steady pace, so please look after us in the future as well with warm encouragement!!"

Keiko Erikawa (Koei Tecmo)

"We have more Neo Romance 25th Anniversary plans in 2020 as well!"

Yousuke Hayashi (Koei Tecmo)

"In March 2020, Nioh 2 will be released, and we also have a new game announcement planned. With the release of the PlayStation 5, a new age will begin. We want to present a game that will be suitable for such a new age."

Yukinori Kitajima (Synthese)

"It'll be around the end of 2020, but I believe you'll be able to play what I've written for all this time. I bet you've started to want to play that sort of game once again. I'm thinking that I'll probably be able to answer those expectations. I'm involved not just in the scenario, but the original story, settings, characters, and story route splits, so look forward to it!"

Akitoshi Kawazu (Square Enix)

"It's the SaGa series' 30th anniversary, so there's a lot planned. There's a lot of adjustments to be made both within and outside our company, so it's disappointing that I can't just accidentally leak info right now. The new game is in preparation, but it's in a stage where we don't know when can update on its progress. Please accept my apologies. Please wait with patience for the new game."

Yosuke Saito (Square Enix)

"2020 will be the year of various happenings. Babylon's Fall, which we were finally able to release a new trailer for, will truly enter its promotional phase. Furthermore, I'm also working on this and that and unannounced title(s) for NieR's 10th anniversary, and will find the right timing to announce it. Look forward to it!!"

Tetsu Katano (Sega)

"Firstly, I want to work hard so that Project Sakura Wars the Stage and Project Sakura Wars the Animation will be a success. Apart from this, there are several other things in progress, and because Kouhei Tanaka-sensei is also at his 40th anniversary of composition, I'm preparing so that we can announce something at this opportunity."

Tomio Kanazawa (Toybox)

"The sequel to World End Syndrome will be World End Phenomenon."

Manabu Shimomoto (Bandai Namco)

"I was involved with the 20th anniversary game Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown, and with development, release, all those events, and the Season , before we knew it, it was 2020, the Ace Combat series' 25th anniversary! I'm hoping to do something that will make fans happy. Also, I'll be working on new challenges as well."

Katsuhiro Harada (Bandai Namco)

"In 2020, I bet we'll release the title we've worked hard on... and a yet-unannounced title (Although it's not a fighting game.)"

Takenobu Terada (B.B. Studio)

"2021 one year later will be the Super Robot Wars series' 30th anniversary, so I'll be busy with something either way."

Sohei Niikawa (Nippon Ichi Software)

"These past few years, we've poured our resources into developing brand-new titles. As part of our next step, we want to pour our efforts into developing a sequel game that echoes the voices of our players."

"The announcement will come at any time, so please look forward to it."

Atsushi Inaba (PlatinumGames)

"In 2020, I believe we'll be able to announce a lot of news!"

Hideki Kamiya (PlatinumGames)

"Same as what Inaba said. (Probably. I haven't read it.)"

SWERY (White Owls)

Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise and The Good Life are already announced, and there also still is an unannounced title. Also... the foundations for the collaboration project Hotel Barcelona with Suda51 is progressing bit by bit.

I want to get even more pumped up and release an "out-there" game for everyone to play, so look forward to it! I Love You All!!"

Ryoei Mikage (Mikage LLC)

"2020 will finally see the release of Criminal Girls X. Also, we also began a completely new original project in Fall 2019. I hope to announce this one sometime in 2020. Please look forward to it."

Makoto Asada (MAGES.)

Next year, I'll release two titles that I am 100% involved in that is in collaboration with another company, for the first time in several years. [Editor's Note: Likely the Famicom Tantei Club remakes) The games are completely different from the adventure titles our company has put out, so I hope you will play it."

Yu, Ming-Yang (Rayark)

"I had already come up with the setting and story for Deemo II in 2017 , but it wasn't until 2019 that we were able to enter the full development phase, and I believe that 2020 will likely be the busiest year of development for Deemo II. I'm also looking forward to the completion of this game."

Akihiro Hino (Level-5)

"I'm not able to say much yet, but we're planning to challenge ourselves with something outside of games, anime, and movies, so please be excited."
