Sega has revealed the in-game appearances for new crossover content from Koei Tecmo and Gust's Atelier series in Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis. Players will be able to obtain the content from the "Atelier Style" scratch ticket that will appear in PSO2: New Genesis on May 15, 2024.

Koei Tecmo had teased the crossover earlier in March 2024, but Sega has since revealed more details on the content. This collaboration will primarily feature Reisalin "Ryza" Stout, Klaudia Valentz, and Bos Brunnen from Atelier Ryza 3, as well as Marlone (a.k.a. Marie) from the 2023 remake of Atelier Marie.

The "Atelier Style" scratch ticket in PSO2: New Genesis will contain multiple parts ranging from hairstyle and accessories to outfits and weapon camos. Players will be able to complete the sets by purchasing multiple scratch tickets or finding the items in other players' Personal Shops.

Sega will also add a new set of bonuses after the maintenance on May 15, 2024. All players will be able to get cut-outs of Ryza, Klaudia, and Bos by logging in daily, even if they do not purchase any scratch tickets.

Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis is available worldwide on PC and PlayStation 4. The online game is also playable on Nintendo Switch in Japan and Xbox One elsewhere globally. The "Atelier Style" scratch ticket will be available for a limited time starting from May 15, 2024.

Atelier Marie Remake review.

The Atelier series is huge, spanning numerous games across many platforms. Atelier Marie Remake: The Alchemist of Salburg revisits the first title in the series, originally released on the PlayStation in Japan on May 1997, and brings it into the modern age with new 3D graphics and a fresh coat of paint. As a newcomer to the series, I found it difficult to navigate, though.

Atelier Marie Remake: The Alchemist of Salburg focuses on Marlone, a teenage alchemy student who is tasked with running her own Atelier in the town of Salburg by her professor. The young alchemist is bottom of her class and is given five years to synthesize something amazing or risk not being able to graduate.

You start out with Marlone only knowing a small handful of recipes, and it's your job to help her learn more of them and improve her synthesizing skills over the years. This is done by not only gaining more Knowledge through books and tomes, but assembling a party and leaving Salburg to gather materials used in crafting. Everything you do in the game takes time, whether picking up a resource, traveling to a location, or synthesizing a product, which is the core gameplay element here.

You're given the choice between two gameplay modes, and once you've chosen, you're stuck with it. There's the regular mode, which adheres to the original five-year time limit, or there's Unlimited Mode, which lets you play at your own pace and go well beyond the five years. As someone unfamiliar with the series, I chose the latter because I wanted a relaxing experience... though, it didn't help much.

Outside of learning new synthesizing recipes, one of the main elements of Atelier Marie Remake: The Alchemist of Salburg is completing requests and quests for the townsfolk. This is a crucial part of making money and can't be ignored. Despite having endless time in Unlimited Mode, you're given a time limit for each request, whether that's crafting something or delivering a certain number of items. If you fail, your reputation suffers. So while the Unlimited Mode takes away some of the pressure created by the five-year time constraint, it does little overall to make your time feel more leisurely.

As you gather materials for requests and synthesis, you must use the handful of recruitable party scattered around the town, each with their own stats and damage types. The more you journey with them, the more your Friendship builds, which leads to special events that teach you more about each character. This ultimately makes you feel closer to the people you choose to adventure with, and in my experience, it made going out and searching for supplies together feel more real. I cared when they were hurt, and I celebrated with them when we won tough fights.

The more you venture out for materials and engage in battle, the more you and your crew level and can explore more challenging areas. These areas are largely unlocked by talking to the residents of Salburg, who are more than happy to gossip and spread Rumors that benefit your exploration efforts. My favorite part of my time spent in Atelier Marie Remake: The Alchemist of Salburg was traveling to new locations and discovering which resources I could pick up to unlock new synthesizing recipes. There are even minigames to discover as you explore! Though I can't ignore how much the areas lack depth, however. Each one features a handful of enemies to defeat and a few gathering points and can be fully depleted within a couple of minutes. It's painfully simple.

While Atelier Marie Remake: The Alchemist of Salburg comes with new music, a fresh graphical redesign, and modern features like a Photo Mode, it's the simplicity of the gameplay loop combined with the pressure of the time constraints that cause it to show its age. It feels like you're playing a 1997 title, even though it's been remade over 25 years later. It's clear that Atelier Marie Remake: The Alchemist of Salburg has been made to satisfy fans of the original and doesn't do much to draw in newcomers who are curious about where the Atelier series got its start. It feels very rooted in nostalgia, and if you don't have that, it might be a struggle to fully enjoy everything it has to offer.

Atelier Marie Remake: The Alchemist of Salburg releases worldwide on the PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch on July 13, 2023.

Atelier Marie Remake Guide Trailer

Koei Tecmo released a new trailer for Atelier Marie Remake. The video acts as a guide of what to expect in the game, which is split into three sections: exploration, combat and story.

The exploration portion of the guide trailer talks about gathering materials for synthesis by heading to different portions of the map. It also shows off how synthesis works when visiting the atelier. The combat portion shows off various battle mechanics, including the flee command when a dragon shows up. The story portion introduces the cast of Atelier Marie Remake, including Schea, Kreis, Ruven and Schwalbe. It also confirms there will be different endings depending on your actions.

The new guide trailer also emphasises Atelier Marie Remake’s new Ultimate Mode as an option. This mode will remove the game’s time limits, allowing players to enjoy the game as they see fit.

He stated that the company's goal is to have the entire series available in digital stores.

Atelier Marie Remake Interview

Soon, Gust is going to bring a classic Atelier entry to the west. Atelier Marie Remake is on the way. Ahead of its debut, Siliconera got to talk to Gust Executive Officer Junzo Hosoi about the development of this installment, its new quality of life features, and the chances of us seeing games like Atelier Elie and Atelier Lilie returning too.

Jenni Lada: When did work on remaking Atelier Marie begin?

Junzo Hosoi: We began development in 2021.

What sorts of quality of life adjustments did Gust consider when preparing Atelier Marie Remake? Which one do you think is most helpful?

Junzo Hosoi: We thought it was essential to add an in-game tutorial and an intermediate goal of "Professor Ingrid’s Task" to guide the gameplay so that new or current game players can smoothly enter the game. "Professor Ingrid’s Task" clearly states the minimum goal to clear so that even newcomers can play without hesitation.

How much did the actual game itself change between the original and the remake in of both gameplay and its story? Did this mean additional script adjustments or mission rebalancing?

Junzo Hosoi: The biggest change in gameplay is that you can now obtain items of your choice by gathering. At the same time, we have adjusted the balance of requests, battles, and number of days for synthesis.

As for the storyline, additional events to interact with the characters you can hire, as well as events in which the teachers evaluate Marie's performance have been added. There are few changes to the original storyline.
[caption id="attachment_968096" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Atelier Marie Remake Interview Image via Koei Tecmo[/caption]
Which more recent Atelier games influenced Atelier Marie Remake most?

Junzo Hosoi: I think it is Atelier Sophie 2, which was released last year, and Atelier Ryza 3, which came out this year. In order to bring Atelier Marie up to a quality suitable for the present day, the knowledge we have gained from these two works has been utilized in this one as well.

What led to the implementation of the Professor Ingrid’s Tasks feature in Atelier Marie Remake and how does it work?

Junzo Hosoi: As the original version of the game had limited in-game instructions, some first-time players may be unsure of what to do. The idea was to make it easier to play by presenting short-term goals for such players. By having Professor Ingrid give you a task every six months, it is easier to know what you need to do next, and it makes it easier to play toward the ending. In Ultimate Mode, the deadline for these tasks can be ignored, making it easier to play for people who are not comfortable with the deadline system.

There are all new 3D character models for the Atelier Marie Remake. How did the original designs influence their new looks?

Junzo Hosoi: We created the characters to be cute in a modern style, while reproducing the character designs and pixel art features of the original work.

How did the team prepare it for a digital release on multiple platforms?

Junzo Hosoi: Since the foundation for multiple platforms has been laid with the past Atelier series, development and debugging for each platform was done pretty much simultaneously.
[caption id="attachment_968097" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Atelier Marie Remake Interview Image via Koei Tecmo[/caption]
What are your thoughts on Atelier Elie and Atelier Lilie? How would you feel about also eventually revisiting those games with possible remakes?

Junzo Hosoi: It is possible. One of our goals is to have the entire Atelier series, starting with Atelier Marie, available in the digital stores.

Now that Ryza’s story’s been told and we’ll meet Marie again, what would you like to do next with Atelier games?

Junzo Hosoi: Based on the experience we've gained up to the Secret series and the we've received from everyone, we will continue to take on the challenge of creating a new "Atelier."

Please look forward to the future development of the Atelier series.

Atelier Marie Remake: The Alchemist of Salburg will release on July 13, 2023 on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC.

Atelier Marie Remake Key Art

It’s not been that long since Gust released the most recent game in the long-running Atelier series. With Atelier Ryza 3 still fresh in people’s minds, Atelier Marie Remake is now ready to take the series back to where it all began.

Until now, Western Atelier fans needed to rely on fan translations to experience the origins of the series. Atelier Marie: The Alchemist of Salburg originally released in 1997 for the PlayStation and Sega Saturn. It later got a slightly improved re-release for Dreamcast and PS2, although this also never left Japan. However, the game is now coming to the West in the form of a remake, now with a chibi art style similar to the Switch remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.

[caption id="attachment_962265" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Atelier Marie Remake Barrel Screenshot via Siliconera[/caption]

The premise for Atelier Marie is a simple one. You play as Marlone, aka Marie, who is a student at the esteemed alchemy academy in Salburg. The problem is, she has the worst test scores in the history of the school. Marie now has five years to prove herself as an alchemist, and it’s your job to help her.

Much like other Atelier games, the game revolves around gathering materials and crafting items for quests. However, this system is notably more barebones than in the more recent titles. While the Atelier Ryza games featured bustling towns full of NPCs handing out quests, Atelier Marie has a single tavern in a town consisting only of places required for your needs.

It’s not surprising, of course. This is a remake of a much older title that’s been iterated on countless times, and so it feels stripped back as a result. However, it might feel a bit disappointing to newer fans of the series whose experience is with those larger, more complex titles.

[caption id="attachment_962266" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Atelier Marie Remake Crafting Screenshot via Siliconera[/caption]

Crafting is similarly simple, as you just need to gather ingredients, head to your atelier, then combine them. Unlike later titles which featured materials with varying traits, the most complex Atelier Marie gets is asking you to buy additional tools to improve crafting. And those are one-off purchases, not something you need to consider each time you craft.

Where the game does get complex is through time management. Marie has five years to prove herself, and different actions advance your time towards that inevitable goal. Returning to the atelier costs a day, and each gathering location in the overworld requires a certain number of days to travel to and from.

This is where the biggest change for the remake comes in. In the original, gathering spots were static screens that handed you random materials for each day you chose to spend there. In the remake, they’re now full maps you can explore, and items are visible. However, picking up these items also spends your days with each haul, and this is where things get surreal.

[caption id="attachment_962267" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Atelier Marie Remake Gathering Screenshot via Siliconera[/caption]

The original mechanic likely gave the impression that Marie and her friends were scavenging and coming up with a haul of items from a long day of searching. In the remake, it inexplicably feels like it takes Marie a whole day to pick up a single bundle of loose branches.

Clearly the change was made to remove randomness from the equation, but the replacement feels awkward early on. Sure, it’s easier to find exactly what you need, but each day gives you a smaller material reward, and it disincentivises exploring the new maps too much so you don’t eat up all your days. Hopefully this is something that can be adjusted for the final release, perhaps advancing a day for every three or four materials you collect, instead of just one. Or maybe it could be based on how many steps you take while walking around the map. In its current form, it feels both mechanically and narratively nonsensical.

That said, Atelier Marie definitely has some old school charm so far. Its simple barebones structure makes it easy to dip in and out of and feels like a game that will thrive on the Switch. I just hope that some of its weirder issues can be ironed out by the final release.

Atelier Marie Remake: The Alchemist of Salburg releases on July 13, 2023. It’s releasing for the PC, PS4, PS5 and Nintendo Switch.

Atelier Marie Remake Pre-orders Open, Art Shared

Koei Tecmo announced people can now pre-order Atelier Marie Remake on the PS4, PS5, Switch, and PC. There is an in-game item incentive accompanying these. People get a Useful Items Set for buying it ahead of launch. In addition, new screenshots, a video clip, and character art appeared. The company also confirmed that people who get the Digital Deluxe Edition that includes the Atelier Marie Plus copy will be able to play that original version via the remake's main menu.

First, here's the new Atelier Marie Remake art. It features Marie shopping with fellow student Kreis Kuhl. She seems excited to go through things, but he's a bit more exasperated.

As for the new screenshots, they’re designed to show how the flow of the game goes. Marie may find herself needing to complete goals for people or to progress as an alchemist. She’ll then head to different locations to gather materials. That also means perhaps fighting battles against monsters with allies like Enderk Yard and Natalie Kohdelia.

Finally, here's the video clip.

Atelier Marie Remake: The Alchemist of Salburg will come to the PS4, PS5, Switch, and PC on July 12, 2023, and people can pre-order it now. Atelier Marie Plus will be available the same day for people who purchase the Digital Deluxe Edition.

Only Atelier Marie Remake Digital Copies Appearing Outside Japan Deluxe

Following a February 2023 Atelier 25th anniversary event, Koei Tecmo and Gust announced the worldwide Atelier Marie Remake release date. Now that the English trailer and official announcement is here, there are more details about the release. Namely, there will be no physical copies outside Japan. People will only be able to get a digital copy of Atelier Marie Remake, however the Digital Deluxe version with Atelier Marie Plus will appear everywhere.

Here’s the English version of the new Atelier Marie Remake trailer. It is identical to the one that appeared in Japan on February 20, 2023. However, this one features an English translation. It introduces Marie by announcing she’s the worst Royal Academy of Magic alchemy student. She’s basically on her last chance, with her exam being running an atelier in the city to prove she is capable of making something of herself. (For those familiar with the series, later entries also adopted this same sort of “exam” storyline, with Atelier Rorona’s being familiar.

During the Japanese version of the February 2023 Nintendo Direct stream, Nintendo showed off a short trailer for Gust's Switch Atelier Marie Remake: The Alchemist of Salburg. The original game came out in 1997, and is the first official Atelier game. It is a Japanese-exclusive title, and it is unclear if the remake version will make it to the west.

Since this is a remake, it will obviously have improved graphics compared to the original. There will be voice acting, as well as 3D graphics. You will also be able to freely explore the environment.  For those who are nostalgic for the original, you can toggle the music between the remake version and the 1997 version. Atelier Marie Remake; The Alchemist of Salburg will also add in new cutscenes between Marie and her teammates.

Because of that, her teacher suggests that Marie open up an alchemy workshop outside of class so that she can improve herself outside of a classroom setting. There is a time management system, as Marie needs to make an item that satisfies her teacher before five years is up. Otherwise, Marie cannot graduate.
