What is Your Best the Favorite VR Game?

It's a big time for VR right now. You know, what with Sony's PlayStation VR 2 releasing for the PS5 and all. While not every home has one, more people are getting chances to play via various types of headsets. So we figured now might be the best time for us to talk about our favorite VR games and recommend some of them.

There's always going to be a spot in my heart for Tetris Effect, regardless of platform, but if we're talking about the game that's the best at using VR as a medium? That's Astro Bot: Rescue Mission. Like Super Mario 3D Land used the depth of the 3DS screen, Astro Bot brought the awareness of VR to do interesting things with an already-popular platforming genre.

Also Astro is just very good and my friend. — Graham

Being an OG PSVR owner, I'm not exactly up to date with the tech these days, but my experience with it has taught me that I'm a less comfortable with the free-movement "walking" VR games that thought I'd be. With that in mind, my favorite VR game so far has been SUPERHOT VR. It has an unimpeachable vibe and is exactly the right combination of static and moving that lets you feel like a bad-ass while in reality you're mostly standing still and flailing your arms around.

Tied for that is the adaptation of MyDearest's Altdeus: Beyond Chronos. It might be one of the more interesting explorations of VR-aided Visual Novel-style games, and takes advantage of the perspective to play some fun tricks with its storytelling. — Josh

It has to be Job Simulator for me. It captures what can be fun about VR! It’s accessible! It isn’t trying too hard to do too much! You can play it briefly or show it off to show someone how VR can work. However, if you do really like it, you can play it for a longer period of time. I'd definitely consider it one of the best VR games out there, even after all this time.

Plus, it’s nowhere near as stressful as my harrowing experiences with Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes. Play it with the wrong people and it's not only harrowing, but endlessly frustrating. — Jenni

Astro Bot Nendoroid Pre-orders Open

Astro is heading off on a new mission, as a Nendoroid of the Astro Bot Rescue Mission and Astro's Playroom games is on the way. Good Smile Company opened pre-orders for the figure. It will cost someone ¥7,000/$63.99. The character is expected to appear in December 2022 in Japan. The launch window for North America is February 2023. However, given the pandemic and worldwide shipping situation, that North American debut could end up delayed. (It's a common occurrence as of late.)

The Astro Bot Nendoroid comes with only a few different accessories and extras. There are three face plates for the robot. Each one only shows their eyes. One features the character’s neutral expression. Another looks like it could be used when they are exasperated or excited. Finally the third is a happy one. People have a coin for Astro to collect. There are also fuse parts to pull. People can attach items to the robot’s feet to make it appear as though he is hovering in the air.

Here's a closer look at the figure.

This is the second Sony character to appear in Nendoroid form in May 2022. Pre-orders opened for a Horizon Forbidden West Aloy figure too. While Aloy is the "star" there, her Nendoroid also comes with a little Watcher.

The Astro Bot Nendoroid will appear in Japan in December 2022 and in North America in February 2023. Pre-orders for it will close on June 29, 2022. Astro's Playroom comes pre-installed on every PlayStation 5.

japan studio playstation store sale

A handful of Japan Studio games are now cheaper than usual on the PlayStation Store. It isn’t an exhaustive sale that covers all titles or many recent release. However, it does include notable games the developer worked on since 2015, like Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, Bloodborne, and Knack. [Thanks, Wario64!]

Here are the links to the Japan Studio games on sale at the PlayStation Store. All of them are available for the PS4.

  • Astro Bot: Rescue Mission: $14.99 (PSVR required)
  • Bloodborne: $12.99
  • Everybody’s Golf: $14.99
  • Everybody’s Golf VR: $9.89 (PSVR required)
  • Knack: $5.99

However, the most recent Japan Studios game isn’t a part of this sale. It worked on the Demon’s Souls PS5 remake with Bluepoint Games. That updated remake is still $69.99 at the moment, as usual. The discounts also don't extend to some other recent ports the company worked on. For example, it was involved with the PS4 versions of both LocoRoco games, both Patapon games, and PaRappa the Rapper.

These discounts come after news regarding Japan Studio reorganization. While Astro Bot developer Team Asobi  will remain intact, Japan Studio as a whole will go through downsizing. PlayStation Studios will handle things like localization. This will happen on April 1, 2021.

playstation vr bundle psvr mega pack

Right in time for the holiday season, the PlayStation Blog announced Australia, Europe, and New Zealand are getting a new PlayStation VR bundle. The PSVR Mega Pack is a comprehensive box packed with everything you need to not only start using the headset with a PlayStation 4, but with a PlayStation 5 as well. The bundle will be sold in November 2020 in all three regions.

To start, the PSVR Mega Pack has the most basic items required to play games in VR. You have a headset, the PlayStation Camera, and the adaptor you need to make it work with the PlayStation 5. (It works with a PlayStation 4 without an adapter.) Be advised there are some PSVR games that can use or require PlayStation Move motion controllers to play, like Beat Saber, Rez Infinite, or Skyrim VR.

You also get five games/experiences to go with the headset. There’s Astro Bot Rescue Mission to start, which is a platformer. Blood & Truth is a shooter with adventure elements. Everybody’s Golf VR is a VR adaptation of the Everybody’s Golf series. Moss is an adventure game. Finally, PlayStation VR Worlds is a collection of five VR experiences designed to showcase what the headset can do.

As a reminder, if you already have a PlayStation VR, you will need the PlayStation Camera adaptor to use it with a PlayStation 5. Sony is sending those out to existing headset owners for free.

The PlayStation VR is immediately available worldwide and compatible with the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The PS Mega Pack PlayStation VR bundle will appear in Australia, Europe, and New Zealand in November 2020.

astros playroom

Astro? He's the adorable little robot buddy who ended up being one of the best selling points of PlayStation VR. Now he's back again, and he's starring in a new adventure. This time, it's a sort of whimsical tour of the PlayStation 5Astro's Playroom will come pre-loaded onto every PS5, and it's designed to help introduce everyone to the PS5 and the new DualSense controller. Check out the trailer, which told us approximately nothing about the game except that it's cute:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lu5VXrEqgco

Luckily, now that the official trailer is ed, we got to learn a little more about Astro's Playroom. As we mentioned earlier, this is pre-loaded software for the PS5, and it's an adventure through worlds based on distinct features of the DualSense. There will be four worlds to be precise, and each one will focus on those features in the gameplay.

We last saw Astro in Astro Bot Rescue Mission, a later title for the PlayStation VR that was incredibly well-received by fans and critics alike. While the PS VR is more of a dry run and therefore a small audience, the game seemed to do well enough to establish Astro as a bit of a hardware mascot.

Japanese sales tracker Media Create released the latest video game software and hardware sales data from the week of October 1 to October 7, 2018.   The #1 spot of the week went to Super Mario Party with 142,868 units sold for the Nintendo Switch. This is the best debut for the Mario Party series since Mario Party 9 which sold 152,883 units on the Wii back in 2012.   At #2 we have Assassin’s Creed Odyssey with 45,166 units sold on PS4, which is close to last year’s Assassin’s Creed Origins which sold 49,419 units back in November. Warriors Orochi 4 continues selling with 24,005 units on PS4 to chart #3 in its second week.   The next new title of the week is Mega Man 11 which sold 14,650 units on Nintendo Switch to chart at #4 and 12,052 units on PS4 to chart #7. Combined, the game sold 26,702 units between the two. While it might not be anywhere near the mega sales we saw from Mega Man games in the past, we can’t give it a proper comparison with previous entries in the series as it was the first retail release at launch since Mega Man 8 for PlayStation and Sega Saturn.   Other new titles of the week include Sumikko Gurashi Atsumare! Sumikko Town which sold 5,221 units on Switch to chart at #16 and Astro Bot: Rescue Mission with 4,963 units sold on PS4 to chart at #17.   In hardware sales, we’re seeing a slight drop in PlayStation sales after having strong two month streak of PS4 titles in the #1 spot dating back to early-August’s retail release of Minecraft on Switch. The PlayStation 4 console sold 11,575 units and an additional 2,490 units from the PS4 Pro model to total 14,065 units. The Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console with 45,762 units sold in the week to make up about 64.6% of all hardware sold. Going by Media Create’s figures, the Nintendo Switch is currently at 5,100,881 units sold in Japan since its launch in March 3, 2017.   The top-20 chart of the week is as follows:
