Isometric, tactical RPG Arcadian Atlas has started its Steam Greenlight and Kickstarter campaigns, releasing more character details and class information along with them.

Drawing inspiration from Final Fantasy Tactics, Arcadian Atlas offers multiple character classes to outfit your band of heroes with as you face off against intelligent opponents. Unlike its inspiration, players must settle on their character’s class when they begin the game and evolve it as they play. In the developer’s words: “no class hopping, but instead class evolution.”

To add some variety, each class will subdivide into two more Advanced Classes as the character levels up. This will create more opportunities for unique builds for a character, giving them access to skill trees that will make the character stand out. Players will also be able to dictate a character’s starting stats, allowing for more effective builds for certain types of character.

Classes such as the Ranger will grant bow abilities, but also skills that relate to plant life. The Apothecary can use potions to heal or devastate the enemy. The Warmancer can use magic and brute force. The developers promise many more classes alongside these, as well as many of the Advanced Classes they will grow into.

The developers promise that terrain will have an effect on combat, with rapids slowing down movement, trees protecting units from bows, and more.

Arcadian Atlas’ story revolves around Vashti and Desmond, two of the Royal Guard who will find themselves torn apart by strongly opposing sides in a war.

Developer Twin Otter Studios has released the debut trailer for its Tactics-style RPG Arcadian Atlas. The trailer was originally shown at PAX South for the first time but has now made its way online.

Arcadian Atlas is an attempt to take the formats established by older tactical-RPGs such as Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre, and update them for today.

Hence, Arcadian Atlas will have dynamic job classes, a rich character-driven narrative, more challenging battle strategies, cutthroat plot twists, and a jazz-infused soundtrack. “To put it simply, it's a Tactics RPG about the choices people make in pursuit of the things they love, and the havoc it wreaks on a kingdom,” says Twin Otter.

Arcadian Atlas will be coming to Kickstarter on April 5th. Due to that, it doesn’t currently have a release date but it should be coming to Windows, Mac, and iOS once it’s ready.

Arcadian Atlas, a 2D isometric tactical RPG, will see its trailer debut at PAX South between January 29th and the 31st 2016. You can see stills from the trailer around this page.

As you might expect from a game like this, it’s inspired by Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre but aims to make that type of experience for the gaming landscape of today.

What this means, according to the creators at Twin Otter, is that Arcadian Atlas has “more challenging battle strategies, new & balanced job classes, and darker subject matter for a more mature audience.” It also has crafting, because of course it does – what game doesn’t have that these days?

Here’s a story summary:

“In the world of Arcadian Atlas, nothing is more brutal than love. And when a kingdom is at stake, love will rip itself to shreds. Now two people are finding themselves engulfed in a civil war they never wanted, and when sides must be chosen, will they find themselves still standing together – or will love leave anything standing at all?”

You can find out more about Arcadian Atlas on its website. It’s expected to launch for Windows, Mac, and iOS in 2017.
