screen-introAnd since the game's title *is* Analogue: A Hate Story I shouldn't have been expecting anything light. I saw the game at E3's IndieCade, which is "set" in the 25th century. Your mission is to investigate what happened to the Mugunghwa and you'll find out by digging through the logs from dead crew .

The game starts with a DOS prompt and after a bit of typing you're introduced to Hyun-ae, a lonely AI who you can talk to by clicking on options like "yes" or "no." While the presentation is barebones even for visual novels, the plot is engaging because Analogue: A Hate Story is a grim reimagining of Korea's Joseon dynasty. That just adds to how dark the PC game is.

Visual novels don't demo as well on the noisy show floor, but after briefly seeing Analogue: A Hate Story during E3 I wanted to find out more about it. You can too by ing the demo and if you're into story oriented games (and like lots of reading!) check it out here.

Whether or not visual novels would be accepted onto Steam has been a point of debate around this community for a while, so when one of our readers pointed out to me that, recently, an indie visual novel with simplistic art but a complex story, went up for sale on Valve’s digital store, I thought our readers might like to know about it.

Analogue: A Hate Story, by indie developer, Christine Love, is a detective story where you pick from two dialogue options to questions in order to progress through the game. Here’s a summary of the game’s story:

Back in the 25th century, Earth launched a generation ship into deep space, with the goal of establishing the first interstellar colony. It dropped out of and disappeared, never reaching its destination.

Thousands of years later, it has finally been found.

Uncover the mystery of what happened to the final generation aboard the generation ship Mugunghwa by reading through its dead crew's logs, with the help of a spunky AI sidekick!

Two pursuable characters. Five endings. A dark visual novel that further extends the non-linear style of Digital: A Love Story in a mystery featuring transhumanism, traditional marriage, loneliness, and cosplay.

Analogue: A Hate Story is available on Steam now for $10.

A big thanks to Chris Taran for the heads up!
