Date and Aiba are distinctive characters who can be intelligent, funny, and flawed, and the two of them play well off of each other throughout AI: The Somnium Files' investigations.

While Ai: The Somnium Files has a lot of important characters who you’ll spend quite a bit of time building relationships with, none of them are as critical to it as Date and Aiba. You spend all your time with the two, watching them play off of each other while also exploring each crime scene and Somnium’s intricacies. Fortunately for everyone who opts into it, the two are incredibly watchable. Each of these protagonists is great, even if they do things that make you cringe a bit, due to how human it can make them feel.

Date is the detective, and we see he’s good at his job. He has no problem standing up to unsavory characters, like of the yakuza, or interrogating individuals. He has good reflexes in dangerous situations. He also is able to pick up on hidden clues in the environment. While he is good at what he does and tends to have a knack for dealing with people, he also has abrasive and annoying tendencies. He cracks dad jokes and delights in bad puns, using them to “amuse” Aiba, Mizuki, and most importantly, himself. A running joke has him constantly asking the name of a fellow investigator he encounters on every crime scene. But, he’s also a mystery and even a tragic figure. We know he lost his left eye in an incident six years ago, and Aiba, his boss, and his coworkers won’t tell him what happened. He’s complex, but comes across as approachable due to his immaturity and sympathetic considering something serious happened to him in his past. Aiba calls him out on his more unprofessional conduct, offering a sense of balance. You could consider her the conscience and voice of reason.

2019091023324600-01BB024A6FAB0035027FFB26CBD54EE7

Aiba is far more serious and composed, though she does have her moments where she might make geeky references. Which is fitting, considering she is an A.I. She was created to essentially be a perfect analytical partner for Date during investigations. There are times when she will anticipate his needs before he even voices them, due to their connection and her incredible intelligence. When she is on the job, she’ll be relatively no nonsense. But, she also is surprisingly human with her sense of humor. She jokes about self destructing if Date suggests Pewter should reprogram her. (Though, she does it she couldn’t do that of her own volition.) She’ll joke about killing Date for his bad jokes. When she needs him to duck to save their lives, she’ll joke about a porno magazine being on the floor, because she knows that would get the quickest reaction. She also suggests she chose her human form for Somnium segments based on knowing his “preferences.” In a way, it almost feels like a big sister teasing and threatening her little brother, but in a way where you can tell it’s affectionate.

While Aiba tends to be the foil when Date cracks jokes or gets goofy, AI: The Somnium Files balances that by having moments where she can sometimes be just as silly. Due to the nature of their relationship and the neural connection they share, the full AI program isn’t transferred during a Psync. Since she isn’t at her full “power,” this reflects in her maturity levels here and how willing she is or isn’t to be a little more over-the-top when solving the dream world’s puzzles. She’ll use slang during these moments, forcing them to switch roles and Date to be the more analytical one. For example, in one session, Aiba will act like a cat after “waking up” in one dream, before agreeing to get serious about the investigation. When she happens upon a mysterious liquid, she might jump in, lick it, smell it, or stick her hand into it.

ai the somnium files 3

It’s also wonderful the way that AI: The Somnium Files teases bigger reveals even at the outset. When you select certain dialogue responses, perhaps when Date behaves in a goofy manner, Aiba will make some sort of reference to some kind of medication. These throwaway lines come up, and she doesn’t necessarily explain them. You have an idea that something happened to Date and perhaps he is recovering from an extraordinary event from the game’s earliest moments, and knowing Aiba has this kind of power adds another dimension to their relationship. Is she helping him? Could she be keeping him in line? It gets you thinking about how much he might really need her.

The characters are the most critical part of AI: The Somnium Files. If you don’t care about the leads in an adventure game, you may never find the motivation to complete it. Both Date and Aiba have these great personalities that make them likeable, but also believable and flawed individuals. They play well off of one another, thanks to their unique relationship and personalities. Discover the truth behind the murders is definitely a reason to keep playing, but equally important is continuing to see how the two interact with one another.

AI: The Somnium Files is available for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC.

AI: The Somnium Files' dives into people's minds are well structured and timed, but still give people plenty of options to explore or make different choices.

Kotaro Uchikoshi’s AI: The Somnium Files is the sort of adventure game that dances between levity and seriousness. We have the practical investigations in the real world, going over serial killer crime scenes, and the almost supernatural peeks into the minds of other people to unlock their mental locks in the Somnium. While these trips into the dream world don’t always make sense, that’s what makes them so brilliant. Especially as people get to see symbolism play out and understand how things begin to make sense.

Date isn’t just a detective. He’s a Psyncer. This means he can enter into a Psync Machine at the station to explore the mind of another person, with the activities shown on monitors so Boss and Pewter can watch. Though, it isn’t just Date exploring. Aiba, the AI that lives in Date’s left eye socket, is the one actually exploring this dream state. She communicates with him through the neural connection, and together the two of them overcome the series of Mental Locks present.

2019091023414600-01BB024A6FAB0035027FFB26CBD54EE7

What’s great about these Somnium segments first and foremost is how well organized they are. Each one lasts six minutes, but time only es when Aiba moves and you know exactly how much time each major action you perform will take. There’s a map that shows things you can interact with, so you can plot out moves without wasting time. On the left side of the screen, there’s a timeline always showing on the left side of the screen, displaying the mental lock and any branching paths you may be able to trigger. You can save at any time during these segments, and also return to the main menu if you need to restart and reload. Or, if you prefer, you could use the retry option to spend certain one, two, or three to go back one, two, or three mental locks and make different choices. There’s pressure to make the right decisions and not run out of time in the dream, but AI: The Somnium Files never penalizes you for experimenting.

Once you are able to jump into exploring this area, without any real fear of mes, you can really start enjoying Somnium segments. While they can involve unsettling imagery or have serious undertones, it can be difficult to be too unnerved sometimes. Especially if you see things like Aiba inhaling so deeply that she sucks flowers up her nose or happen to spin an item so fast that it flies away. It also allows you to get more emotionally invested without fear. If you go down a path where you might not get a good result, you might feel heartbroken at the uncovered trauma and the negative effect it had on the person’s life. Or, if you made a more ideal choice, you might feel genuine relief and joy knowing that even though this is a virtual character, you made their life better.

For example, the earliest case involves dealing with Mizuki, who discovered her mother’s dead body and is suffering from aphonia as a result. (Conveniently enough, for the sake of the story, she’s the daughter of Date’s close friend and has been living with Date after her parents’ divorce.) There are two options for her Somnium experience, based on how you react to one of two items present in the area that will unlock the second Mental Lock. I went through both, to see what Aiba’s actions could do and the result after the segment was over. Each one elicits a different sort of emotional response.

ai somnium files

Which brings up another element that helps make the Somnium moments freeing. AI: The Somnium Files has a flowchart that is constantly there for you in the menu. At any time you can access the menu, you can pull it up to reopen an old investigation or go through a Psync again. It really lets you make the most of the idea that these are supposed to be dreamlike states. Even though the stakes are high and we are going through major investigations, we have the opportunity to fall back and change our minds. We can stick with the consequences of our actions and find out how they turned out, but also rely on extra save files and this flowchart to go back and right anything we might have regretted.

AI: The Somnium Files lets its Somnium segments give players a degree of freedom. Things are well organized and, while there are limitations and consequences, it also doesn’t have intense pressure that means one wrong decision completely ruins your playthrough. Things like the ability to retry segments or head to the flowchart give you the opportunity to explore the dreamlike logic present in these areas and better appreciate what is going on with their symbolism and possible paths. It’s a rather cool complement to the other, more typical investigation elements found in the game.

AI: The Somnium Files is available for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC.

2019-09-06_041145 The physical version of AI: The Somnium Files was expected to release in North America on September 17 alongside the digital versions, but it has been delayed by a few days to September 24, 2019.   According to Spike Chunsoft, the delay was due to the increased demand and manufacturing delays. It was only announced for PS4 and Switch versions in North America, and the digital releases will continue as planned.   Here’s more about the game:

The mind never lies… In a near-future Tokyo, Special Agent Kaname Date is on the case of a mysterious serial killer. Date must investigate crime scenes as well as dreams on the hunt for clues. From the mind of Kotaro Uchikoshi (Zero Escape series director), with character design by the Yusuke Kozaki (No More Heroes, Fire Emblem series), a thrilling neo-noir detective adventure is about to unfold.

  And story:

One rainy night in November, a woman’s body is found at an abandoned theme park, mounted on a merry-go-round horse. She had been stabbed repeatedly, and her left eye was gouged out. Kaname Date of the Metropolitan Police Department arrives on the scene. He recognizes the woman. Suddenly, he hears a noise from inside the merry-go-round. He breaks into the merry-go-round’s central column to find a young girl. And in her hands, she grips a bloody ice pick…

AI: The Somnium Files releases for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam on September 17, 2019. The PS4 and Switch’s physical versions release on September 24, 2019 in North America. The game’s physical version releases in Japan on September 19 and in Europe on September 20, 2019.
