What is the very best Ace Attorney game of all time? This beloved visual novel/puzzle-like investigative series is both hilarious and emotional. Each case has the potential to surprise and delight. But with more than 10 games in existence across the mainline experiences and spin-offs, it can be tough to recommend the best overall game.

But here is what the Siliconera staff has come up with regarding the best Ace Attorney game of all time. Did the recent Ace Attorney Investigations Collection: Miles Edgeworth make the list?

Siliconera Speaks Up: Best Ace Attorney Game 5r45z

While this entire series is one of my favorites in gaming, The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is a must-play for fans. Though this pack is, technically, two games in one, they feel so complete and well-rounded in a way no other Ace Attorney game feels. The presentation, historical setting, and wild cases are all at peak quality. While I usually hate one or two cases per game, almost none of these are filler or worthless. As for a runner-up, I’d have to give it to Apollo Justice. The music is by far the best in the series with this one. -- Cody

Cody already mentioned it, but The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles hands-down is the best entry in the series. The characters, story, music, and overall quality of the game are absolutely top tier, even when they were working with pennies as a budget in the second one. I have a soft spot for AA2 since that was the first Ace Attorney game I ever played, but if I have to name a game that's not TGAA, then definitely, AA3. As a kid, I straight up did not realize I was playing peak. For goodness' sake, Little Stephanie was such an idiot, she didn't even understand Godot's appeal! I'm so glad Capcom remastered the original trilogy so that I could finally understand why everyone around me was so Godotpilled. -- Stephanie

While I love the original trilogy to bits, I've never had as much fun with the series as with Ace Attorney Investigations. Being able to finally play as Edgeworth and have Ace Detective Dick Gumshoe as your sidekick was well worth the wait. The new collection for both Investigations titles couldn't have come out at a better time. -- Daniel

ace attorney investigations review

2024 has been a fantastic year for Ace Attorney fans, between the Apollo Justice Trilogy in January and now Ace Attorney Investigations in September. As Miles Edgeworth, you get to prosecute criminals and bring them to justice. Psych! No you don’t, but you do get to solve cool mysteries, overwhelm opponents with the might of logic, and look snazzy with a fancy cravat and sleek new visuals. As a longtime fan of the series and a big Edgeworth fan, I can say with absolutely no bias at all that this was well worth the wait.

The plot of Ace Attorney Investigations focuses on Miles Edgeworth, one of the main characters from the original Ace Attorney trilogy and Phoenix’s rival. Though he is a prosecutor, he never goes to court in the games. Instead, Edgeworth focuses on solving cases outside of the courtroom. The cases all connect into an overarching story compared to somewhat more episodic first trilogy. It plays very similarly to the main series though. You still have to collect clues, put them together, and find contradictions in testimonies. Edgeworth’s unique mechanic of Logic doesn’t introduce anything too radical like the Emotional Matrix from Dual Destinies or the Jury of The Great Ace Attorney. But it’s still a fun way to advance the story and shake things up.

When I first played Investigations in high school, the story didn’t really resonate with me. At first, I thought it was because I liked how the more episodic first trilogy allowed for "breather" cases. However, the port helped me to figure out my initial disinterest. The setting for the duology reminds me a bit too much of how 5 and 6 became way grander in scale.

Edgeworth is a prosecutor, yet he’s doing work that seems far beyond his pay grade. I don’t know how the rules work in Japanifornia, but prosecutors leading a criminal investigation into an international smuggling ring seems pretty divorced from reality. Not that the games were ever trying to be realistic, but there was still some degree of credibility. It’s like watching CSI or Criminal Minds. I doubt those agents in real life go out in the field and apprehend criminals. It’s easier to accept Edgeworth doing this now than it was back then. I suppose I have 5 and 6 to thank for that, since those games jumped the shark in a way that nothing can really surprise me anymore in Ace Attorney.

This is subjective, but I really enjoy the cast of characters in the second game. They’re so much more colorful than ones in the first entry. The story is also a lot better, in my opinion, and I can see why some consider it one of the top three games in the entire franchise. I’m also a lot more receptive to Lang this time around, since I’m no longer a diehard Edgeworth-stanning teenager. Now I feel bad that the first thing I said when Lang appeared was, “Was he always this ugly?"

ace attorney investigations running

Something I vividly from when Ace Attorney Investigations first came out was an interview with the development team. Someone mentioned that they put a lot of care into Edgeworth’s running animations to make it look natural and effortless. The updated sprites in the game make those animations look even better than they were on the DS. He looks great jogging around, as do all of the characters. At no point did I ever feel like switching back to the original sprites and, during the brief period I did, it looked so wrong that I had to go back. It’s when the portraits appear that they revert to the ye olde “three frames per action” style of the DS era. The change is a little jarring, I it, but not enough that it actively bothers me.

The little avatars on the field are so cute, especially now that we can see so many more details. I love Edgeworth’s smug little face when he does that annoying shrug. I love Gumshoe’s pathetic cringing animation. The guys in this duology are really lovable this time around thanks to their overall goofiness and the new sprites. I’ve liked Edgeworth and Gumshoe since the very first game, and this one really reinforced my affections for them. As for Eustace, he's a ridiculous clown boy but I adore him all the same. He was one of the things I was most excited for when Nintendo first announced this port, and all of his scenes were as delightful as I hoped they'd be.

The girls are no slouch either in that department, especially with Kay’s lively little animation cycles. She’s so similar to what Maya and Trucy (and later Athena) brought to the table though! It’s way too late now to complain about the writing, but sometimes I wish that they’d gone a different route with her personality. Her rapport with Edgeworth was fun regardless and I enjoyed her integration into the overarching lore. So this isn’t me pushing an anti-Kay agenda, mind you.

ace attorney investigations localization
Screenshot by Siliconera

One thing that kind of takes me out of the experience is the occasional wordiness in the localization. This is only prevalent in the first game. I decided to reread my review for the Apollo Justice trilogy while writing up this one and to my shock, I realized I repeated my past mistake. Once again, I chose to replay a bit of The Great Ace Attorney during Investigations, and the memory of that game affected my impression of this one. I should stop doing that. While the localization for Investigations is strong, there are a few points where a different translation might have been snappier to read. The sentences can be long to the point of awkwardness, making them feel unnatural for dialogue.

It's one thing if the lines are, say, Edgeworth's. He talks in an overly stuffy and formal manner in the Japanese as well. But it's another thing for random characters who should be a lot more casual. That being said, I don’t believe that the occasional odd line is detrimental to the overall experience, especially if you’re someone who doesn’t work with words and writing all the time. It’s also a personal preference thing. I firmly believe all periods and commas should be in quotations, and that people should use harebrained rather than hair-brained. But according to my research, some people don't share this opinion.

Ace Attorney Investigations is a fantastic port that looks and plays beautifully on modern consoles. I’m so happy that people can finally experience the second game with an official localization! So happy that we can finally see that little wiener Eustace in HD glory! It strikes that perfect middle ground between the old Ace Attorney (the original trilogy and I argue even the fourth game) quality and the new Ace Attorney (Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice) zaniness that most fans of the series can enjoy it, so long as they suspend their disbelief. Just pretend you’re watching something like Criminal Minds!

Ace Attorney Investigations will come out on September 6, 2024 for the PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Windows PC.

Preview: Ace Attorney Investigations Collection Deserves Attention

Do you know how long people have been asking for Ace Attorney Investigations 2 to be released in English and show up worldwide? I’m pretty sure since February 4, 2011, one day after it launched on the DS in Japan. It only got worse when Capcom did release a mobile port in Japan in 2017, but then only released the original Ace Attorney Investigations Android and iOS port everywhere. But Ace Attorney Investigations Collection is remedying that injustice, and after playing through some early cases I think it will be a welcome prospect for players.

Both of the games in the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection star prosecutor Miles Edgeworth. They’re also a part of the canon timeline for the Ace Attorney series in general, taking place after Trials and Tribulation. (The first game is immediately after, and the second immediately follows the events of the first.) In each one, Edgeworth may feel a bit more like a detective than lawyer, as he’ll first investigate a scene after a crime, then go through a phase where people and suspects are confronted. The sequel also introduces a Mind Chess element that involves a timed minigame where you talk with your opponent to learn details and eventually beat them to get critical testimony.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLFMaakr_xg

When going through the first Ace Attorney Investigations, it was a pleasant homecoming. I really appreciated that spin-off when it first released worldwide, and the remastered graphics, new character sprite, and work put in to bring it to the Switch all made my initial case come together well. I especially liked the history feature, as it is a quality of life option I appreciate in other visual novel and adventure games. Considering what Edgeworth is dealing with here, it’s really helpful to be able to look back.

As for my experiences with the first episode of Ace Attorney Investigations 2, I can’t express how pleased I was in the initial moments. The consistency with the localization honestly made it feel as though nothing changed and as if there hadn’t been any gap between global releases. The nature of the cases also fit in well, especially with the first picking up with an international incident that ties into the original game.

The one thing I did notice as I went through Ace Attorney Investigations Collection is that the new HD sprites really felt like a marked difference. I attribute this, in part, to the fact that even the original DS game used the more refined type of portraits for characters and, regardless of whether you select the HD or pixel art sprites before choosing a game or loading a save file, everything else features the remastered backgrounds, portraits, and texts. So while having the pixel art sprites is a fun bit of nostalgia, I found they felt rather out of place when actually going through the cases.

After going through the initial cases in Ace Attorney Investigations Collection, I think everyone who has been waiting years for a chance to play this missing Edgeworth game will be pleased with how Capcom chose to honor these spin-offs. I’m not done with my new journey to bring the truth to light, and I’m already impressed with how well it’s been handled. Especially considering how the HD sprites and remastered elements look so far.

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection will come to the PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and PC on September 6, 2024

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection - Missile the dog sprite comparison

Capcom has published a new tweet that shows sprite updates for the police dog Missile in Ace Attorney Investigations Collection. People can check the dog's sprites in classic pixel art and refined modern styles, both of which will be available to choose from in the compilation.

Missile is a K-9 police dog that first appeared in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, the series' inaugural entry. Capcom later added the dog with a full-body sprite representation in both Ace Attorney Investigations entries that originally appeared on the Nintendo DS in 2009 and 2011.

Here is the official Japanese tweet showing an animated GIF of Missile's sprites in Ace Attorney Investigations Collection:

The same launched a new project to publish new sprite comparisons every day for a week starting from July 22, 2024. Missile is the third character that Capcom has featured on the list. The first two characters were Kay Faraday and Verity Gavelle. The latter is an Ace Attorney Investigations 2 debutant who is also known as Hakari Mikagami in the Japanese version and Justine Courtney in the game's long-standing English fan-translation patch.

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection will be available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on September 6, 2024.

ace attorney investigations model

The official X (Twitter) for Ace Attorney Investigations has posted a new visual for Kay Faraday (Mikumo Ichijou), comparing her new sprite with the old pixel model. It will show a new one every day for a week to let players check out how the game will look on a more modern console.

As a reminder, players will have the option to switch between the “classic” pixel art and the “modern” sprites. The animations will look the same. We can see in today’s post how Kay’s movements where she swings back and forth and then punches the air twice with her right fist are the same between the old and new sprites.

Ace Attorney Investigations, or Gyakuten Kenji in the original Japanese, was a spin-off of the mainline Ace Attorney series that let you play as Edgeworth. Unlike in the main games (as well as other spin-offs like The Great Ace Attorney or the crossover game with Professor Layton), you were able to walk around the map and investigate that way. That’s why everyone has a full 2D model, complete with animations.

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection is in development for the PS4, Xbox One, Windows PC, and Nintendo Switch and will come out on September 6, 2024. This collection will be the first time that those outside of Japan can legally and officially play the second title in the series.
