Gundam Seed Freedom Zero Prequel Is in the Works

The series’ director Mitsuo Fukuda provided more details about Gundam SEED Freedom Zero during a presentation at Grand Cinema Sunshine Ikebukuro in Tokyo, Japan. He noted that the prequel would not be greenlit unless the initial movie became a successful hit. However, the Gundam SEED Freedom movie did end up being a great success with a new franchise-high Japanese box office revenue of over 5 billion yen (~$32.7 million) and more than 3 million tickets sold.

Fukuda also added that the whole scenario for Zero was already completed 20 years ago in 2004, and the earliest storyboards for it had appeared even before his team worked on SEED Freedom. Sunrise originally planned to release Zero as an OVA (Original Video Animation) in 2004, but it has yet to confirm the format for this newly greenlit anime project.

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom Zero is under production. Sunrise will reveal more details about the title—including its format, platforms, and release window—at a later time.
